S.C. Maritimo v Newcastle – Europa League match preview

Estadio dos Barreiros – Home of S.C. Maritimo
It’s here where the fruits of labour from last season are realised as return to “proper” European competition for the first time in five years.

The group stages of the competition kick off in earnest and Newcastle have found themselves drawn together with S.C. Maritimo of Purtugal, FC Girondins de Bordeaux of France and Club Brugge of Belgium. Together the four of us make up Group D with the top two progressing forward to the round of 32.

It’s in the small island of Madeira, off the South-West coast of Portugal that our European campaign really begins. The island capital of Funchal, home of our opponents S.C. Maritimo, is actually closer to Casablanca in Morocco than it is to Lisbon in Portugal, but I’ll spare you any more geography lessons!

Team news: Newcastle

Hatem Ben Arfa serves the third and final game of a suspension earned during his days with Marseille. Cheik Tiote, Ryan Taylor, Tim Krul and Danny Simpson are all out and Fabricio Coloccini is highly unlikely to feature. Papiss Cisse misses out through illness whilst Demba Ba has been left out of the squad entirely.

Team news: S.C. Maritimo

Maritimo have just one absentee going into the match. Midfielder Rodrigo Antonio was sent off in the second leg of their play-off clash with FC Dila of Georgia and will miss the game through suspension. Apart from that they have a clean bill of health.

Team selection

Once more we are likely to see a change from the side that played at Everton on Monday night, and with a Premier League game against Norwich City to consider on Sunday afternoon I’d tend to agree with that. However it’s all about striking the balance between trying to do well in the Europa League and trying not to impact on our domestic season.

Alan Pardew has already admitted that he will change the team around, but what changes can he really make? And how far do you go with said changes?

In terms of defence there isn’t a lot we can do. Perhaps we could bring in James Tavernier and Shane Ferguson at right and left back respectively, but then you are relying on Mike Williamson and Steven Taylor playing three games in six days. Perhaps Tavernier could slot into central defence in place of either Taylor or Williamson instead?

In midfield I’m actually not too worried. We have the resources in that part of the pitch to completely change things around with players like Gael Bigirimana, James Perch, Sammy Ameobi, Dan Gosling, Romain Amalfitano, Gabriel Obertan and Sylvain Marveaux all able to fill in.

Up front we are struggling again. Shola Ameobi and Adam Campbell are the only two fit recognised strikers we have taken to Portugal. Mind you Campbell scored again for the ressies yesterday!

Did you know?

This is the fourth side from Portugal we have faced in European competition. The other three are Sporting Lisbon, Vitoria Setubul and FC Porto.

This is United’s 17th season of European football.

We have played Maritimo before, way back in 1982 in a friendly match that we won 1-0 courtesy of a Chris Waddle goal.

Shola Ameobi is our second highest European goalscorer ever with 12 goals, including that goal in the Nou Camp all those years ago. Mind you, he is some way behind Alan Shearer who has 30 European strikes for United to his name.

Final thoughts

I want to see us do well more than anything else, and whatever team that plays should go there in the belief that they can win. Realistically a point away from home isn’t a bad result if we make sure we win our home fixtures so I’ll be happy with that.

Maritimo struggle with scoring goals and have done since they sold their start striker to Sevilla over the summer so there is always a chance that we could get something if we can keep things tight at the back.

Now is the time for some of the young lads and fringe players to shine. They will be given a chance and it’s up to them to take it with both hands.

Howay the lads!

  1. Let’s see if the Tempest (a mother of all hissy fits) can respond to 75. What’s the betting that he’ll continue to bottle it, gravitating to some high and mighty ground that he has just created for himself.

There’s only one Bobby Shinton, one Bobby Shinton, there’s only one Bobby Shinton, one Bobby Shinton …! 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 RIP Troy. Long Live Bobby! We want Bobby! 😀

    Get Tempest’s guitar, Gareth. Tempest give us another Boumsong. Sorry, I mean song! 😳 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

Listen up mate. I’m on a mission to rid the blog of this *****, but I can’t do it without getting my hands dirty. 😆

  3. cant see Ba getting what he wants this time.
He is more likely to see out the next two seasons of his contract and walk away on a free. I’m sure some other clubs will pay what he wants if they can get him for nowt. But I just cant ever see Fat mick coughing up that kind of money to keep him.

  6. DJG-Aye considering the whining you’d have thought they were robbed entirely by officials on our pay roll. I’d still say it was a fair result. More luck than Everton but they were hardly robbed.

      (Quote)

  7. To be fair, he is worth more than 50k a week, but then we’ve all seen where hardballing gets players with the club. And 100k? Quite clearly out of our price range, although I suppose when Xisco leaves we could just divert the salary to Demba.

    He’d be like a new signing! 😀

Not worth it though, esp if his knees could still explode.

  8. Also re the mail

“is available in January for £7.5million, as the release clause which caused so much uncertainty over his future opens again.”

Surely that has to be bullshit.

      (Quote)

  9. Ba has played hardball all his career; first he did well in his native France, went to Hoffenheim in Germany, scored over a goal every 3 games. Left them for the prem and would have signed for Stoke but failed the medical. Had to settle for Wet Spam but intelligently put in a clause to screw them over if they went down, which they did. Came to us for a reported £50,000 per week and put in a clause to leave for £7.5M so if he did well he could try and double his wages yet again. Only this time he has hit a brick wall. Only way is down from the toon lad, and you good but you no Andy Cole. Nee Offense. After looking at all this information I just wonder, is he really loyal to us or are we just another cog in his big rise to wherever. ❓

      (Quote)

  10. Wow, so it is still active? Very poor negotiations allowing that in the contract tbh, once maybe but active every window now? That was always going to cause trouble.

**** it, play him constantly until his knees explode 😉

  12. TBH I think the knee thing is a load of ****. If there was something seriously wrong with his knees he would miss games (like Ledley King and other players have) I think Pulis, Moyes and co. have dropped a bollick, and they know it. Not least by his goal scoring antics at their grounds.

      (Quote)

  13. MDS-Thing is people were also put off coming into the summer by his poor performances in the second half. If he continues this scoring form into Jan then clubs will be sniffing around again. Unbelievable that the clause is still there.

      (Quote)

  14. And if the knees weren’t a problem before we should make them a problem.

Unhappy being a sub huh….play him in all the euro matches and ressie games until he’s proper crocked! 😎

      (Quote)

  15. DJG-They may say that but still

It was a pretty nasty injury which left a serious fracture in Demba’s tibia and fibula (the front and back bone of the leg), resulting in him being out for 8 months.

As if he wasn’t unlucky enough to be on the injury list – the surgeon only went and did a botch job! Yup! This resulted in Ba struggling with knee pain due to muscle damaged on the operating table. it is believed the problem stems from a nail inserted in his tibia that touched a sensitive part of the knee when it was removed.

Pretty sure it’s a genuine concern.

Until you man up and answer the questions I have posed over the past few days instead of hiding behind bluster then I refuse to engage.

Anyone, not that they’re interested can go back to 14th August and see all your quotes on your views on Good.

You then make additional quotes two days ago to justify it. Everything is on the blog. Not a thing to hide.

If you want to keep hiding and being a coward then c’est la vie. I only deal with people who have back bones. G’Day Aussie. Though I will pass pleasantries with you, I refuse to engage in a debate with you. Hence the disclaimer.

As for your comments about Dave, you going to print what I’ve said about Dave?
As I have respect for Dave I will be emailing him with all the texts you refer to.
    This is not the forum.

As I infer in the text you are referring to, which will be sent to Dave is self explanatory. The fact you have brought this up will demonstrate what a scurrilous character you are.

Man up. Answer the questions. You are a real jessie. 😳

I’m here to discuss football with others.

Cant believe Llambs **** let them get away with that like. 😕

  21. I’ll be gutted if he goes, but on the other hand, we dont (k)need this on going drama at the club. Take the money and find someone else. 😕

  22. DJG – granted Cisse had a good chance (which he really should have finished) and Anita had a shot cleared off the line, but please don’t convince yourself that we didn’t get out of jail on Monday. The first half was the worst I’ve seen us play in a long long time!, Everton were all over us and had a goal ruled offside (which wasn’t) and a goal where the ball clearly crossed the line. We done really well to come back twice but against a better side, and with competent officials we should have been well beat by half time.

As for the Ba situation, I really can’t believe we’ve allowed this clause to run over 2 windows (at least 2 anyway, it may be all for all we know), it’s madness. I think if Pardew wants to keep Ba we have to sort him a new contract to stop this stupid situation. Every time Ba has a poor game or is subbed or anything like that – the papers will be writing the same *****.
I would be sure that if the club allow Ba to leave, having been so inactive with incoming signings, then other players will defo look for the exit door.
Can’t believe we are going to allow off field stuff like player contracts to overshadow football matters again.

If Ba keeps scoring like he did in the first half of last season then he is gonna be worth a fortune in January. But if he’s scoring and getting first team footy then he may want to stay. However the agent sounds like he has too much to say for himself.

      (Quote)

  25. Either his agent is a very clever fella, or else our legal team are completely hopeless.
No way we should have agreed to these clauses.
    Beggars belief

      (Quote)

  26. Well Joey B had a big mouth agent but the only time I can remember him coming out to speak against the club was when there was **** going on between the club and himself.
So I suggest the samething id happening now with Ba and his agent, as I said the other day if Ba is happy and loved the club as some have said he would just tell his agent to wind his neck in and stop causing trouble. But to me it’s obvious that there is something wrong, and that there is some trouble behind the scenes, which in that case Steve Wraith was right ??.
We don’t know for sure what is going on behind closed doors but to me the players haven’t really played as if they were happy to be back to playing footie again after the closed season. Thinking of it now I can remember talk of the club wanting to get Ba to sign a new contract after his clause had passed, so has the club maybe said that to him to convince him to stay along with promising to play him in the middle, but they have failed to do what they said ??

      (Quote)

  27. People keep going on about clubs being put off by Bas knee. Yes he’d have a medical with another club but they will also have seen him playing and scoring regularly for us. If you don’t think a club like Lpool would folk out £7.5m on Ba with there ‘striker crisis’ then you’re mad.
If Ba is playing well come Jan then make no mistake, there will be a host of clubs sniffing around. I fail to see how we will get a replacement for £7.5m like.
Lambastard needs a good hiding for this. He’s a clown!, can’t agree fees and when he does, he then allows stupid clause to be written into contracts!, still, he saves cashley money so big mike won’t mind.

      (Quote)

  28. BB well the legal team that he had for the KK fiasco were hopeless.
Sharpy I think the thing with his knee’s isn’t that he should be missing games etc, but week on week they could be getting worse untill they start to go then they won’t get better. But I agree that £7-8 mil for liverpool or someone isn’t big money and if they got goals out of him to get them back to were they want to be then it’s money well spent.

Aussie you say to not panic etc ? You said not to panic about the Everton game that you were sure we would get the 3 pts 😯

      (Quote)

  29. Big D – I may have missed something, but I dont understand why you keep banging on about S Wraith being right???
He may see more than most of us, but I’m certain he is no more ITK than the rest of us, when it comes to player contracts etc.
It was fairly obvious throughout the summer and into the start of the season that something has been wrong behind the scenes.
Isn’t it always the case at this club ❓ 😕
    One drama follows another. 👿

      (Quote)

  30. BB last week he twitted that there was some player unrest at the club, so we were talking about it on here and a few were basically saying that he was talking ****, making it all up and just causing trouble because of his deslike of the regime.
You say it was obvious that there was something wrong behind the scenes all summer ? Well I would tend to agree with that.

      (Quote)

  31. I think we should always go into a game expecting to get the win and 3 points.
The lads clearly came out on Monday night with the belief that the best we could get was a draw. How has that happened???? Everton are no better a club than NUFC, yet we were beaten before KO.
The kick up the **** at halftime was needed and boom, we were far better in the 2nd half.
For some reason I am expecting better things from the kids tonight.
    PMA.

      (Quote)

  32. Firstly, pardew has refuted any claims of a fall out with ba. Obviously he might say it regardless. but if you don’t believe it from the horses mouth then there’s nothing he could say to convince you.
Secondly why are comments from ba’s agent proof that there is club unrest? maybe he’s just trying to get ba a move? don’t see why one player allegedly not happy here means the club is falling apart!

      (Quote)

  33. Really looking forward to seeing young Adam Campbell use his pace with the likes of Shola nudging the ball onto him.

I know some fans want a more experienced team to to play tonight but you have to remember even Sir Bobby didn’t play Shearer in some UEFA games as to give a chance to the youngsters aka Shola.

    Bigger picture people!!!

      (Quote)

  34. ST who said the club was falling apart ? Are you making things up again ?? Because to me some player unrest is nowt like the club falling apart, but you know that already 😉
Then you ask is there ever a time when SW isn’t saying there is club unrest ? I haven’t heard him say owt bad about the club for most of last season, but sure don’t let that get in the way.

      (Quote)

  35. Its not just been about Ba.
Cabaye has had a face like a smacked **** since the season began too.
Simpson still hasn’t signed a new contract.
And wtf is going on with Tiote ❓ having been linked with a move away all summer, he is now crocked. And nobody knows what with.
Now even Krul is linked with a move to Barca.
It all smacks of unrest in the troops.

      (Quote)

  36. ST – Pardew said he and Ba were fine but Pards doesn’t negotiate the contracts. You’re right, it came from the horses mouth. But so did Ba saying there were things going on that he wasn’t happy with – also from the horses mouth.
Ba may be happy football wise but there is clearly something going on mate.

      (Quote)

  37. @bd
I’ll leave the making things up to sw. are you joking? this time last year he was still claiming.player anger at the club! even if there are issues, broken clock and all that.
Don’t skew what i am saying again Dave. why does one slim proof that ba doesn’t want to be here mean that there is much player unrest?
And why can’t we take pardew’s assertion that his relationship with ba is good and.leave it at that?

      (Quote)

  38. Big Dave, I was only one goal and 2 points off being 100% right, but a negger like you see’s it as 100% wrong 🙂 🙂 🙂

he said he hadn’t been happy with how things had been going. i think ba is a good guy i don’t think he’d disrespect pardew. i think he was alluding to our poor performances and not being picked for Senegal. pardew slammed ba’s agent for his comments but hasn’t complained about ba’s comments at all.

      (Quote)

  40. @bb no way man!
Cabaye – (no offence) he’s French, these mood swings are expected. He looked happy vs everton. He’d been playing **** – i would be annoyed if he sauntered around vs villa with a smile on his face
Simpson – agree the contract issue is worrying. but nothing on his twitter suggests anything other than happiness here.
    Tiote – he’s injured! injury doesn’t equal unhappy and i don’t see how you’ve made.that leap!
Krul – not taking that point seriously mate 😯

As far as I can see Steve Wraith says it how he sees it and has far more connections than any of us.

If the truth is not good news then so be it.

He’s been big enough to acknowledge publicly that he called it wrong over how successful we were last season.

If you actually follow him, he does praise the Toon. However bad news usually makes headlines and that’s how you only see the negative news he prints.

If you want a balanced view then follow him on twitter.

  46. The release clause, His agents fees and £100k a week wage demands is a bit more that the £7m the papers love pushing when its all totted up.

Bear in mind we paid £6m+ to sign him as a free agent from a relegated club, What would his agent(s) be demanding now when his reputation is at an all time high.

Not a prayer he will be off in january noone will pay that for an uninsurable player…

      (Quote)

  47. I’ve no doubt Ba may be a little upset at the minute but tough sh*t. It looks like we have been trying to renegotiate his contract since July and talks have stalled over his excessive wage demands (£90k a week according to one report). It is entirely possible that his agent’s quotes are designed to put pressure on the club over his contract negotiations.
My money is on Dekka not caving into that kind of pressure 😆

Pardew’s comments about his release clause still being active make absolutely no difference – does any-one seriously think his agents won’t be already touting this around possible interested clubs between now and January just like they did over the summer? – not a chance.

Ba would also obviously be unhappy about being dropped by Senegal and benched for the Everton game so I can understand his comments. He would be better keeping this in house rather than being petulant on national TV though.

It’s interesting no clubs came in for him in the summer and therefore not a forgone conclusion that someone will come in and offer him a massive pay rise and guaranteed first team football. If he goes to a CL club he will probably spend more time on the bench than he does at the Toon.

  57. his can’t be tolerated: the player sulking, his brother criticising Alan Pardew on Twitter, and his agent crying to the press about some perceived ill-treatment. Demba Ba is becoming a real pain.

The player’s continual insistence that he loves Newcastle United and that the fans are ‘special’ to him becomes less credible with each passing incident. He loves the club, but insists on a release clause, he loves the supporters, but only when he gets to play centrally – sorry Demba, but you can’t always have it your own way.

At some point, Alan Pardew is going to recognise that the moaning coming from the forward’s camp is eroding his own authority – strong managers don’t tolerate this kind of behaviour, and Pardew should consider making an example out of Ba. The release clause, the chirping of third-party agents, the five months he went last season without scoring – add up all the elements, and the player is becoming more trouble than he’s worth. Just because he profited from two Tim Howard howlers on Monday night doesn’t all of a sudden give him a license to say whatever he wants.

The player has made a very decent contribution, but he’s hardly irreplaceable – cut the cord, take a fee, preserve the harmony in the squad, and move on without this nonsense. Demba Ba needs to stop behaving as if he’s a Balon d’Or winner and grow some self-awareness.

    Got to love Brian Clough.

John McGovern was on talksport earlier and tells the story of him being furious with the referee about a decision.

He troops back in the dressing room at half time and moans to Cloughy about the referee.

Cloughy, LISTEN YOUNG MAN, THAT REFEREE HAS MADE ONE MISTAKE ALL GAME WHICH IS 5 LESS THAN YOU.

  62. i have never worried about players leaving, whats the point,of coarse i want our best players to stay, but if they want to move on for whatever reason go for it, the days of loyalty are long gone, the club will always be there (hopefully) and we move on simples 😀
