Game On! Manchester United v Newcastle United

Game On at Old Trafford
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game On’ article which this evening will take us through every twist and turn of the third round League Cup (or Capital One Cup as it’s known now) ti against Manchester United.

It’s not going to be an easy match. Going to Old Trafford is tough whatever team Sir Alex Ferguson ultimately decides to name, but to progress in the competition we’ll have to beat the perennial title contenders and cup winners in their own back yard.

The League Cup is generally known as a competition that more teams can win. The feeling is that the big boys don’t really give it their full attention and play weakened teams giving other sides more of a chance of progressing. Personally I think it’s a bit of a myth and all managers name a team that they believe can win the game on the night whilst balancing the requirements of their squad. Look at the winners and you’ll see the same, familiar names popping up…

To get a result we’ll need the referee to be fair and unbiased. I hope Manchester born Wythenshawe resident, Anthony Taylor, can do just that. Personally I don’t think it’s right that a referee can take charge of a game that is five miles away from his house at this level of football but then that is just my opinion. Besides, you never know, he might be a fan of the blue half of Manchester anyway!

As ever team news will be detailed below as and when it becomes available and for a little bit of background on the fixture you can always have a look at my match preview by clicking here.

As mentioned in said preview, the game is live on Sky tonight which is fine for me and the others that aren’t going to the game, but those outside of the UK or those that don’t have Sky may need a hand so if anyone can find a decent stream of the game then please feel free to share it via the ‘comments’ section below.

Which just about wraps it up.

“Toonsy….Aye, need new ones cos the Perch voodoo dolls are nae good now”

  4. *** Cisse so close again. Got to say he’s looking really lively and much more mobile than the last few games ,reckon he’ll do well against Reading .

  5. Since Cisse has come on we’ve seen the Cisse from last season. Working for the ball and looking dangerous. Encouraging signs no doubt

  6. Young Fergie has died out of the game a bit now but he seems to be the only natural winger we have at the club.

Toonsy, you are welcome to keep your opinion as long as I get a free Willo voodoo doll 😉

  7. JJ – They are wipe clean so you can have a new scapegoat every week 😆

  8. Credit to the lads for this second half performance. It’s a pity it takes Pardew and his team a first half of experimenting to turn the game round 🙁

  9. To defend my own player I think Gosling has been our best player apart from a weak challenge for the first goal. 😀

  10. JJ Gosling has seen a lot of the ball in the second half, but seems to lack the strength and composure at the vital second…

  11. TOONSY enjoy your hols mate, first as a family man 😀 me and dave will keep a eye and make sure richie doesnt go back to useing swear words 😆

  12. Gosling has put in some great challenges, got forward in support of Shola and in general has passed the ball around nicely.

If he found some shooting confidence he could be the goal scoring midfielder we’ve been crying for.

  13. ah **** it ,there you go ,should of played Cisse from the start . 🙄 On the plus side Cisse back on the sheet 😀 ,Elliot assured mostly 😀 and a few less games to worry about now.

  14. Well…. a teensy weensy bit disappointed with Pardew’s line up, may have cost us the game at the end of the day.

One less cup to worry about now then…

  15. that was one hell of a big opportunity to make progress, and we messed it up AGAIN, time AP started to think like a toon fans that travel all over, that game was there for the taking, same as last week in Europa..

As for Tavarnier been a FB think back to last week in Europe, he got roasted.

  16. Big pluses tonight…great second half from young Tav at right back (proper position by the way), having played left back first half. Cisse looked closer to his old self, Shola was at times unplayable, good cameo by Fergie… still disapponted to be out the cup though 🙁

  17. ash1001 agree 100%, this game was there for the taking with the right line up.

Regarding Tav, he didn’t get roasted tonight to be honest, though I’m also still not 100% convinced of him.

  18. i blame this one on our Silver supremo , why the **** did he not send out our strongest side , if he did this game was ours . Imagine the devestation Ba , Hba and Cabaye would of caused against that defence . Plus points Tavernier and Cisse when he came on . Things learned ,get rid of Gosling ,Williamson and Vuckic in January and replace them with some quality .

  19. Axel -Pards has already said that the PL is his priority this season ,which is why he’s not playing our strongest 11 .I don’t get why he feels he can come out saying we really wanted to win tonight when he fields a weak side 😕 ,considering fans travelled there at night and in ***** weather and paid £45 it’s pretty shocking .

  20. Reading put 3 past QPR tonight 😯 Why am I suddenly nervous for saturday 😕 Watching that game up close and personal too,so really want a win. 😉

  21. Ba’s already shitting it thinking its already his turn for a goal drought.
We would’ve drawn Chelsea in the next round then, though maybe we wouldn’t as the knowledge of our win might’ve changed his hand to a different number.
**** seems really Man U biased, seems to have something against us for some reason.

  22. Disappointing result but positives were:
    Tavernier looks decent
    Bigi is a great talent
Cisse is back and looks sharp
Colo got a good run out
    Tiote is back
Ferguson looks a good bet on the left as a winger
    Negatives:
    Obertan – clueless
    Williamson is a championship defender
Vuckic – needs to go out on loan and play regularly as he has ability but doesn’t look sharp enough
    Gosling doesn’t look good enough

Hopefully we will have a real go at the Europa League now with fewer games to worry about
