Game On! Manchester United v Newcastle United

Game On at Old Trafford
Welcome one and all to our ‘Game On’ article which this evening will take us through every twist and turn of the third round League Cup (or Capital One Cup as it’s known now) ti against Manchester United.

It’s not going to be an easy match. Going to Old Trafford is tough whatever team Sir Alex Ferguson ultimately decides to name, but to progress in the competition we’ll have to beat the perennial title contenders and cup winners in their own back yard.

The League Cup is generally known as a competition that more teams can win. The feeling is that the big boys don’t really give it their full attention and play weakened teams giving other sides more of a chance of progressing. Personally I think it’s a bit of a myth and all managers name a team that they believe can win the game on the night whilst balancing the requirements of their squad. Look at the winners and you’ll see the same, familiar names popping up…

To get a result we’ll need the referee to be fair and unbiased. I hope Manchester born Wythenshawe resident, Anthony Taylor, can do just that. Personally I don’t think it’s right that a referee can take charge of a game that is five miles away from his house at this level of football but then that is just my opinion. Besides, you never know, he might be a fan of the blue half of Manchester anyway!

As ever team news will be detailed below as and when it becomes available and for a little bit of background on the fixture you can always have a look at my match preview by clicking here.

As mentioned in said preview, the game is live on Sky tonight which is fine for me and the others that aren’t going to the game, but those outside of the UK or those that don’t have Sky may need a hand so if anyone can find a decent stream of the game then please feel free to share it via the ‘comments’ section below.

Which just about wraps it up.

  1. 3 hours wasted = I like your optimism but you know Gosling, Obertan and Williamson will be in the team against Bordeaux. I agree about Haris, he needs a run of games to get fit he’s been very stop start with injuries.

Gosling is a joke. He isn’t defensive, he isn’t attacking, what is he? Alan Pardew’s love child maybe? He must be dynamite in training, same with Obertan

Bigi I’m so impressed with this lad at 18, going to be a top quality player if we nurture him correctly.

  2. I’m not bothered about us being out of this Capital One Cup tbh. Premier League, Europe and FA cup is enough for this squad.

  3. I pointed that out to my dad, gosling just jogged around the halfway circle, occasionally flinging a pass about, often with too much power so that the receiver struggles to control it.

  4. Not surprised by the performance or result really, would have liked Cisse to get a bit more time but at least he got a goal, and maybe ferigie too. 2minutes on the pitch and he delivers a pinpoint cross.

    As for Obertan……. 😕

Ah well, didn’t want to win this fake trophy anyway 😉

  5. I thought Gosling did alright personally. He certainly did more than Marv and Obertan. Should have done better with his chance though, it was a right spoon. Still, better in the defensive ish role, worked hard imo, unlike some others…

  6. Marv annoyed me a lot more than Obertan, Marv jogged the whole match, didn’t notice him run once. On one occasion we were on the break it was 2 on 2 and yet he walked with ball stopped, waited for people to catch up then misplaced a pass. Should be behind Sammy and Ferguson in the pecking order.

  7. DJG = Yes, it’s easy to say you’re not bothered we’ve got FA, Europa and Premier league. Which one of them are we going to win? League cup was our best chance of getting to a semi, never mind winning it, we could have knocked out the favourites! If we keep playing a nomark XI then we will keep getting knocked out of these cups. Now we must take the FA and Europa more seriously. If we aren’t taking them seriously we should withdraw from them and concentrate on avoiding relegation, picking up the Sky money and promoting ashley’s tat shop to the world.

  8. I don’t necessarily agree that we ‘would have got Chelsea away’, but say we had. We have virtually no chance of winning this Capital One Cup anyway. We never win anything! We have loads of games in Europe and a premier league game away at Reading on Sat. That takes priority over League Cup IMO. If you think we would have won this game and all the others because of starting Ba and Cabaye then go ahead.

  9. i think it’s just the fact that Obertan got and the ball, but was his usual frustrating self. But then, at least he got on the ball and did his running.. 😕

  10. Anyway, why shouldn’t we win the Europa League? We have a group we can get out of and then we could get lucky and get some good draws. I would much rather we won something that other teams actually take seriously.

  11. I agree with the Marv criticism now. Not sure what’s happened to him, but he’s not putting any effort in nowadays. He’s also showing no ambition going forward and simply opting to come inside and pass sideways. Marv nullified a lot of Ferguson’s threat as he refused to support him on the wing. It allowed Man United to double up on the young Irishman. A few more performances like that from Marv and we should get rid. He is clearly unhappy at not being first team and its affecting his performances

  12. Am I the only one that thinks tonight couldn’t have gone much better?
How were we to know Man Utd would put out a weak defence?
People complaining that Pards should’ve played a stronger team need to take a look around at Everton/Liverpool/Arsenal/Chelsea etc, how many of them played their first teams? Let alone us, when we’re already hit with injuries.
I expected us to lose, so to have positives coming out the game is a bonus.
    Positives:
    Held our own fairly well.
Creating more chances now than our early games.
    Performances of Elliot/Shola/Tav/Perch
Good run out for Colo & Tiote
    Most importantly: CISSE SCORED.
If Cisse could join Ba and HBA in finding form we are going to have a terrifying strike force.

  13. Solano-It does seem strange that some of those who called for a huge number of first teamers are the same lot who claim we have a small/***** squad 😆

Still think we should have played Cisse from the start, just to help him with sharpness/may have banged a couple in, but there we go.

  14. Did we really create chances though? I don’t call lumping the ball up to Shola for him to knock down/hold up proper chance creation and that’s where majority of our play came from today. Shola is good at that, but let’s also remember he was up against kids tonight. Its a shame Pardew still has us playing this way nearly two years into his tenure. Its not good enough and we have developed a rep as long ball team. The best football last season came from 433 but we will be lucky to see that again as Ba is the one in form & no doubt will not take too kindly to being shifted out wide again. (Sigh)

  15. The Kid-To be fair though, Cisse’s goal came from a good ol fashioned cross whipped in from the wing, by one of our only players that can actually cross. That at least was good creativity and I had no problem with that.

Just don’t think the Vuckic/Shola combo is a great idea, Shola is much better as a link up player, either knocking the ball onwards or taking it himself and passing through/diverting defenders through a good run. Vuckic was sat behind him, if he ever got the ball he was too far off to shoot, and Obertan and Marv never provided clever runs through meaning we seemed to have 5v2 in the box…

On the flip side, both Manure goals were moments of individual brilliance/luck so, meh.

  16. I’d love to see Pards try Ferguson at LW in front of Santon. I think that those two would combine well due to Ferguson’s pace in front of Santon’s surging runs.

Our right side would then be HBA and Anita, which would be devastating. Cisse and Ba would get far more service.
