Mackems scrape draw against ten men! Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle

Cabaye celebrates the opener
The 147th Tyne-Wear derby ended in stalemate, but Sunderland needed a huge helping hand to rescue a point against a side who played with ten men for three-quarters of the game.

Even though the spoils were shared for me it’s us who have the bragging rights. They failed once again to beat us on their own patch, and I’ll reinforce the fact that we had only ten men for three-quarters of the game whist they had the bulk of decisions from the referee throughout the course of the game.

Yohan Cabaye got Newcastle off to a flyer by scoring from our first real attack on three minutes. Hatem Ben Arfa worked the ball down the right and played inside for Shola Ameobi who saw his cross cleared straight to the feet of Cabaye who swept the ball home from 12 yards in front of the travelling fans, albeit significantly below them thanks to a change in away seating arrangements at the Stadium of Light.

In truth it was the away side who were performing the better of the two. We had control of the first portion of the game, we had the lead and we had the home fans starting to get frustrated with their sides lack of attacking intent, although I was sure they’d be used that by now during Marty’s Party.

But then the ascendency was handed back to the home side through a moment of madness from Cheik Tiote. Fouled by Sunderland’s ginger tosspot, Jack Colback, Tiote then proceeded to go in on Stephen Fletcher with his foot raised and his studs showing. People will argue that the whistle had already gone but for me that just makes it an off the ball incident. Either way it was still dangerous play and I have no complaints with the red as such.

However any ascendency that the home side should have got from such an act wasn’t forthcoming and Newcastle remained pretty comfortable although admittedly our attacking presence was somewhat stifled due to a tactical switch which saw Shola Ameobi replaced with James Perch leaving Demba Ba ploughing a lone line up front. Despite that though, Sunderland rarely threatened and the half drew to a close without too much else to report.

Half-time: Sunderland 0-1 Newcastle

Home fans expecting the alamo after half-time would, in hindsight, be disappointed. Newcastle, with Fabricio Coloccini showing why he is so important to the side, looked comfortable still despite the one man disadvantage. Indeed Tim Krul wasn’t actually required to make a save from a Sunderland shot the whole game which just shows how useless Sunderland were at attacking and how well Newcastle were doing defensively.

The first real chance of the second half didn’t arrive until 74 minutes, but it was the away side who it fell to with Demba Ba unable to make the most of a great through ball by Hatem Ben Arfa. The Senegal hitman cut a lone figure at times, but he must be commended as he kept the Sunderland defence on their toes and always offered an outlet.

Sunderland had thought they’d equalised with eight minutes remaining but the Sunderland fans who had first started cheering soon realised that his effort had hit the OUTSIDE of the net, much to the derision of the away support.

However, moments later, with 85 minutes on the clock, Sunderland got the equaliser they were after, but they needed one of our players to get it for them. Seb Larsson found the head of John O’Shea whose effort was drifting wide of goal only to bounce off Demba Ba leaving Tim Krul wrong-footed and the scores at 1-1.

Sunderland tried to press for a winner but once again their lack of cutting edge in the final third proved costly and after four minuted of additional time the whistle was blown and the latest edition of this fierce rivalry was drawn to a close, with Sunderland fans no doubt feeling like they’d won the FA Cup once more after just about scraping a draw against ten men.

TEN MEN!

Full-time: Sunderland 1-1 Newcastle

The referee was awful for the entire match. This is the same man who didn’t see anything wrong with Nigel de Jong’s leg-breaking challenge on Hatem Ben Arfa two years ago. As I mentioned earlier, you can bemoan poor officiating for the sending off if you like, but Tiote also needs to shoulder a large portion of the blame. It was well documented prior to kick-off that Atkinson like a red card and Tiote gave him just the excuse he needed.

It was a silly mistake that Tiote just needs to cut out from his game. He can tackle, but when he loses his rag like that he becomes a liability and it ends up no good for us. Still, 95% of the time he is excellent for us and it’s important to remember that.

On the more positive side there were some excellent performances out on that litter-infested pitch today. Fabricio Coloccini was excellent in the heart of defence and even Mike Williamson did well. Davide Santon shut Adam Johnson down to the point where I wondered if he was still on the pitch or not, and Demba Ba, as mentioned earlier, did well with what he was dealt. Did you know that he is now Sunderland’s second highest top-scorer this season?

It was also nice to see that Sunderland fans are as bad with their aim as the attackers representing their team are. I mean if any one of the golf balls they were throwing at Yohan Cabaye, all seen on Sky cameras, connected with him they would have an issue wouldn’t they?

Does that make us unbeaten against them since they proclaimed themselves as “top dogs” following our relegation? I think so…

Howay the lads!

  1. Colo was Mammoth today, definately one of the best centre halves in the league.
I think tiotes sending off will be a blessing, he has been awful this season hopefully Anita and perch get a chance.
Gutted not to take 3 points but we are well above sunderland.
£24 million for Fletcher and Adam Johnson and they did **** all.

  2. And for those who have complained how boring we are currently, I challenge you to keep watching the mackems play, because my god they are ***** 😉

  3. Still think Tiote card was harsh. It was high but it wasn’t that high. Think we showed a lot of character. I so believe uf Tiote stayed on we would of won game comfortably. We really need to win a few on the bounce in the league.

Yeah, think a couple of their fans died from boredom in the stands. 😆 Ben Arfa doesn’t seem to do his standard drop the shoulder and beat the man runs anymore. Now he just runs 10/15 yards, stops in front of two players , turns around and attempts to crab walk (at a pace) around them 😕 .

      (Quote)

  5. Johno
I agree, think it was harsh though I knew straight away he was off and I think that was the deciding factor that he raised him boot at all. Mind you if shin height is red what the hell was Larsson doing karate kicking Shola in the chest ❓

      (Quote)

  6. And a pretty good summary of Tiote….sometimes he does stupid things and we do need to cut that out, but I don’t think he’s as nasty as some seem to make him out to be, I don’t think he’s ever made a “red card challenge” which hasn’t gone punished and while he does rack up the yellows it is part and parcel of the role he is expected to fulfill really…

Still don’t think it was a red-and if it was then several scum players should have been carded-well, they should have been carded anyway, but definitely if he was judged late and high, all I want is consistency but yet again referees show it’s not even different on an individual ref basis-they will actually just throw cards out at random it seems. Ruined the game really as I think we would smashed them with 11 men, but there we go.

The one match so far this season which had the potential to be a thrashing, we scored 2 minutes into the game FFS, could’ve been 3-0 by half time if we still had 11 men and could’ve potentially rivalled the 5under1and match.

      (Quote)

  8. Andy-I dunno, there was one run where he beat about 5 players and sprinted most of the pitch, just didn’t work out when he passed to Ba, shame he didn’t notice Cabs as he looked in the mood for more.

Think it’s part of playing in 4-4-2, he doesn’t have the freedom to go cavalier and risk losing the ball so much, because if he does we’re a lot more exposed than when he lost it in a 4-3-3…

      (Quote)

  9. OK you could say Tiote was rash, over-committed and trying too hard to re-establish himself by using the derby as a red-blooded springboard, but the card count and the laughably lo win count of 50/50 decisions marks this as a poor refereeing performance by any standards, A good whistler would have given yellows to larsson and tiote and spoken to the captains to keep a lid on. More intervention by the ref in those shirt pulling and tackles from behind would have balanced the game, but he chose to ruin a potentially decent game.

In the end we saved face, the mackems are indeed a dire outfit, any team that brings on Vaughan (who looks like an unpopular action man character and plays like one) as a last-ditch attempt at winning is truly a lost cause dear oh dear oh dear. Biggest plus for me is I get to go to work tomorrow and face up to my unwashed colleagues proudly.

      (Quote)

  10. Well one positive for me was that we came out of the traps, all guns firing, for a change. Possibly the 1st time this season.
We had control of the game up to Tiotes red mist incident.
Big improvement over previous performances this season, especially defensively.
Colo is cool as a cucumber and reads the game well, but I just knew when he went off, that we would concede.
My only real gripe, will be aimed at Pardew. Not convinced he got his subs right tbh. I mean why bring Obertron on ffs ❓ Why not Cisse. And why take off HBA, when clearly Ba was knackered. But then again he was scuppered by Tiote. 👿
Overall, satisfied with a point, STaylor boy was right too, not one of their players would get in our team. 😆
    Howay the Lads.

      (Quote)

  11. It’s also funny that the some of the rare talent they actually do have-Sess and Johnson, are now completely ruined and shackled by MoN’s shocking tactics and that pikey McClean seems to be getting steadily worse as well 😀

      (Quote)

  12. Disappointed in that result. Never a red card.. Was watching in a bar here in Cologne with a mackem and even he said never a red. In fct he thought the ref was well biased towards mackems too. He though they were lucky to get a point. Lol
Oh well. We didn’t lose even with 10 men vs 12 …

      (Quote)

  13. BB-I think it was so we could attempt to hold on, Benny was looking knackered as well and obviously had more defending to do, so Obertan could run around in the midfield and chase people down and maybe, just maybe spark a counter attack with his pace. Cisse would have been a bit like for like and we might have been a bit more exposed…if colo didn’t get injured i’m sure we would have seen him tho.

      (Quote)

  14. Aye Newkie, fair point.
Also, I feel we really miss Ryan Taylors set pieces. Cabayes delivery is generally shocking, and nobody else seems to get a look in.

      (Quote)

  15. I was going to mention Saylor’s pre-match wind-up too. I would have larsson as Cabs understudy though.

      (Quote)

  16. Got to agree that when Colo went off I too felt very nervous .Can’t believe they got a point out the game jammy feckers. They should feel shame faced as they are truely *****.

      (Quote)

  17. Larsons free kicks were pretty poor aswell today.
No way would I want him anywhere near our squad. He’s one of the unclean. You never know what our Lads might catch. Anyhoo Raylor is far better. Just typical of our luck for him to be crocked for the rest of the season. 👿

      (Quote)

  18. Well Lads over all I think a pt isn’t that bad but i’m pissed because we were running the game and had a real chance of teaching the mackems a lesson until Tiote got send of so I feel that we dropped 2 pts today, I don’t care what anyone say’s if that was a Mackem player that made the same challenge as Tiote there isn’t one person on here would have questioned the ref’s decision, I said it before that Tiote and his lack of discipline will cost us a game and i’ll say it again because he never learns, sometimes I think he must believe half the hype the fans make of him and he must truly believe he is a Mr T type hard as nails guy, but to me he is just a total fool that can’t control himself 👿

      (Quote)

  19. I thought Cabaye’s shots from freekicks have been alright, it’s his floating crosses that have been bad, but Raylor was rubbish at that as well. Only Barton has been good at that, the rest can’t beat it past the 1st man.

      (Quote)

  20. Andymag – their goal came as a direct result of a cabaye fluffed free kick.
ffs it went straight to them and hoof they were on a break.
At this level, its just not good enough imo. If he cant be consistent with his freekicks etc, then someone else needs to man up and have a go.

      (Quote)

  21. How many times has Tiote been sent off while at Newcastle? I haven’t checked it but off hand i think its twice. Twice going into his third season with us isn’t bad at all esp with the position / job he has in our team. I do stand to be corrected if its been more than twice.
Im not one to get carried away and I certainly any trying to build up expecting or try too add more pressure on the team but does anyone else feel next league game against west brom is a must win? They r 4 points above us in the league and obviously f they win they go 7 clear which isn’t insurmountable at this stage of season but feel we.need to really kick start our league season and i think todays performance shows what we can do.

      (Quote)

  22. aye they’re all horrible mate. We call em ‘scum’ for a reason. 😆
    No class whatsoever. 😈

      (Quote)

  23. Johno – Tiote has been booked 27 times and seen straight red twice, I think.
Also I feel if we play against Wet *** like we started to show we can today, then we have a good chance of the 3 points.
Its down to Pardew to get the Lads up for it again, and for the Lads to perform as they can do.
    fingers crossed. 😕

      (Quote)

  24. Oh lads, anyone with film 4 get on Purely Belter at 1am this evening/tomorrow morning, absolutely class film! 😀

      (Quote)

  25. Yeah straight red twice-the other was against Stevenage when he was brought on late on (we were behind) and was clearly told to go out and get a grip of the game because the majority of our players that night were pathetic. He did leap in the air, but the tackle was actually just wrapping his leg around the ball, but obvs the stevenage guy rolled around and got him sent off, even though it wasn’t dirty but I guess it was “out of control” as he was in the air…

So yeah, I said before he rarely commits stupidly like Barton used to but sometimes it can happen. He does need to chill a bit but it seems to be part and parcel of his character.

      (Quote)

  26. Re the set pieces-I liked our little training ground manouvere, worked well and Ba came close (sort of)-that’s what we need to do imo because player for player we’re not great in the air vs many teams in the PL, we need to use some nous.

      (Quote)

  27. For definite I would have screamed for cattermoles head if he had done Tiote’s challenge, but I also would have been laughing heartily at the fortunate manner of the decision. This game needs a better whistle man at the rudder. This one ruined it imo. I dont condone Cheick’s rashness at all and he should be learning by now, but a good ref would have kept a lid on this and kept it going with some common sense.

Just like to add that absolute wazzock Ray ‘Fester’ Wilkins saying if the players foot had been planted on the ground Tiote would have cut him in half. Only if he was carrying a chainsaw. I’d love to see the manouevre where a player slides in at speed and manages to keep a foot planted in one spot. He does my head in.

      (Quote)

  28. He was also sent off in a few of the cup games I think, we’ll at least one of them, his bookings make him more of a liability. My friend who’s a Manure fan said he was dirty after they beat us and I tried to defend him saying he’s just the enforcer of the team but with his cards stacking up he’ll get that reputation eventually.

      (Quote)

  29. taken from the bbc…

Since joining Newcastle in 2010-11 no player has been awarded more cards than Cheick Tiote – 27 yellow and one red – in the Premier League. Second on the list is Lee Cattermole – 18 yellow and three red

As someone has already mentioned, Tiote also sent off against stevenage in cup

      (Quote)

  30. If Sunderland dont get charged and fined for the chants of their fans today then the FA are not worth a toss , wishing the death of a player is unacceptable , have read the police are investigating racist abuse and their was things thrown at Cabaye . I would suggest a points deduction or a game played without public and no Scumberland fans allowed into SJP for the home game .

      (Quote)

  31. Stevep-that amount of yellows is pretty surprising if i’m honest, but at the end of the day I think Nolan picked up 10+ with us in our promotion season, and he hardly got stuck in at all. At least Tiote is a bit more use than Smith and them lot as well who would be out of the game after their first yellow, Tiote does have other attributes and I worry that some of our fans forget about the other stuff he does.

I still don’t think he’s a classic hatchet man-I’d say cattermole’s record is worse because of all those reds, and he actually seems to run the risk of a red every time I see him.

      (Quote)

  32. The Tiote tackle wasn’t a red card after Larsson never got any punishment at all for his kick in the chest. That is reckless. Reputation got Cheick sent off.
But he is no good to us sitting in the stands.

      (Quote)

  33. The trouble Chiek Tiote now has is his reputation with the Refs , they will give him no room now ,every time he goes in for a sliding they will card him because the opposition will go down like they have been shot in the heed . I bet if he played for Manure or Chelsea he would only have had half the bookings .

      (Quote)

  34. It was the same last season though, Tiote increasingly got bad press then with some muppet commentators, like Wilkins today, saying its calculated and all that bullshit. There were a number of matches last year where Tiote would get a customary yellow but if another player on the pitch-be they on our side or theirs-did the same, they’d generally just get a telling off. Can’t be helped now I suppose.

      (Quote)

  35. Just seen since the start of last season we have conceded 1.37 goals per game with COLLO in the team against 1.63 without him .

      (Quote)

  36. Axel @ 35 thats what I was saying earlier about how the fans big him up and give him a reputation of some hard man, if they were in a room with Tiote he probably wouldn’t do fuk all because there is no one there to pull them apart, I have came across loads of guys that have a big reputation as being hard hitters but take them away from their mates ( or team mates ) and they haven’t got the bottle.
The guy has let us down before even when he get’s an early card he still hasn’t got the discipline to wind his neck in 😕 as for his reputation well he knows he has one so should be even more careful to not give the ref an excuse. and yeah I know the ref was real poor but that doesn’t excuse it

      (Quote)

  37. BB@17,Sorry been busy. Yes he did watch in his lucky orange shirt 😎 He’s not bad ,up and down a lot but fairly stable ,thanks for asking.

      (Quote)

  38. Very well played by us. Colo was magnificent and have to give a lot of credit to Willo as well as he had a fine match. All of the refs will be watching Tiote now and he must keep his studs down or we won’t see much of him on the pitch this season. Cabaye had his best game and Ben Arfa got us out of trouble several times. Sunderland were poor throughout the game and clearly feel we are the better side. We should give them a good thrashing at home. Perch came in and played well also. Hats off to the team in difficult circumstances with some strange refereeing decisions throughout (Atkinson missed several hand balls for example and several clear corners were not awarded). Howay the lads!!!

      (Quote)

  39. The derby was a pretty good game except for the result. The scum got lucky. We more than matched them with 10 men though and we can always be proud of that. I really don’t think that Tiote’s was a sending off.Horrible decision and think Atkinson robbed the result from us with that decision.

      (Quote)

  40. Dave-I don’t think Tiote has ever acted like a “hard man” or ever really claimed to be one has he? In fact they had a load of banter about him screaming when he got hit with paintballs, louder than everyone else. In his interviews he is generally very meek and humble. If he were in a room with someone he wouldn’t hurt them because he’s a professional footballer, he’s not some thug, like Carroll perhaps? He does get aggressive during games, but who doesn’t? I know I do…

      (Quote)

  41. Big Dave… Have been busy with work, studies and what not mate. Make time to see the lads in action though and vent out the frustration or joy on Twitter or facebook. Haven’t found the time to be here in a long time and I so very regret it.. 🙁

  42. Newkie..Doing good. Became a Doctor finally. Now,hatching a long term plan to wind up in Newcastle and be there until my last breath.. 😉

      (Quote)

  43. I still think Ba should of made way for Cisse when he was flagging and I really hope Pards don’t keep dropping him to the bench as that’s really embarrassing for our no.9.

      (Quote)

  44. Newkie im sure you caught on that the in the room bit was in response to others that seem to think if anyone steps out of line that we should get Tiote to sort them out. 😕
As for getting on like a hardman I have never said he claimed to be one, but I have seen enough of him playing to make my opinion that he thinks he is some sort of hardman, as for aggression well he has been playing in the prem long enough to know that he can’t get away with the amount of aggression he shows, but he still hasn’t learnt.

Deepak well you have to keep the work and studies up, but you should try to get on more often, we still get a good bit of craic on here, but it’s normally a bit quiet on a match night as a few are probably having a shandy or 2 😉

      (Quote)

  45. ITN News and the reporter just said ” and in football a Demba Ba own goal rescued Sunderland from a loss against 10 men Newcastle” 😆 Oh the shame of it ,who’d be a Mackem 😆

Deepak ,you need to change your name on here to Dr Deepak now then 😉

      (Quote)

  46. Newkie by the way I have no problem with a player that goes in hard but as long as it’s fair and to me Tiote has overstepped the mark a few times and he’s not just letting himsel down but he’s letting his team mates and the fan’s down, and if he learnt from it it would be different but he doesn’t 😕

      (Quote)

  47. Dave-Nah honestly I didn’t know what you meant about the room thing, I see what you mean now, but surely that’s all just a joke isn’t it? I’ve joked about it, I don’t think anyone actually seriously expects Tiote to do discipline lessons do they 😯 It’s just a joke, like calling him Mr T-

As for the hard man attitude, I don’t really think he thinks he is, I think he just thinks he’s a footballer (that’s a lot of thinks!) Like I said, he usually carries himself in quite a quiet manner off field, “hard men” l-ike Keane or Vinnie Jones, or Big Al (for some) or Barton perhaps-carry themselves a bit differently IMO.

As for the aggression, two seasons yes but then some players go their whole career and never learn-like Scholes, or perhaps Shearer with his elbows?. Doesn’t mean he’s not a good player for us, hopefully he can learn, but he will always gets yellows because of the role he plays.

      (Quote)

  48. Deepak-Sounds like a plan mate 😉 Maybe you should try and be a doctor at the club! Are you into physiotherapy? 😆

  53. Tiote is a class act, but I want him sold.
He missed a third of last season.
After this ban, he’ll have already missed 8 games this season. Add in 5 for ACON and he’s already notched up a third of this season missed as well. And that’s not factoring in other possible suspensions/injuries.
If a club comes in with 20-25 mill I personally would like Ashley to get him on his copter! That is, if we see most that money put back into the team. Obviously the word “if” is the key here!

      (Quote)

  54. Also, Coloccini is our best ever defender. Discuss.
I only really know defenders in the Premiership era though. Class act. Especially surprising as during some of his first season there were comparisons with people like Boumsong 😯

      (Quote)

  55. Didn’t see that Kim but I can believe it, it has improved over the years but still has a long way to go, when you consider what was happening around there twenty years ago and the fact that the trial for Karadzic has only just started and will go on for several more years just shows how long the influence of people like him and milosovic and mladic has remained in serbia, the fact they still have support and the fact that their current government denies “genocide” although admits to war crimes just shows that even the mainstream thinking there is dangerous at best.

      (Quote)

  56. ST-Yeah, I’d say probably better than anyone except woodgate, although obviously we didn’t have him for that long…

I do wish he’d get forward a bit more, like Albert, maybe get a few more goals like him too

      (Quote)

  57. Injury free Woodgate is a definite rival yeah.
Almost did, that corner routine nearly worked a treat! Nice to see that they appear to be working on set pieces in training as they’ve been a shambles for a good year now.

      (Quote)

  58. Solano

I agree. People on here tend to say Woodgate is better, but I don’t even think he is on par. Woodgate was probably as good at reading the game, but Colo is better because once he wins the ball he has the technical ability and confidence to remain cool and play us out of trouble 9 times out of 10. Superb defender and I hope he retires with us.

      (Quote)

  59. Only just watching MOTD now, seeing that Tiote tackle, I’m sorry, it’s not a red in a million years 😕

      (Quote)

  60. Regarding Tiote’s tackle, if Scholes/Rooney/Parker or any of the other England fav’s commit the same tackle it would be laughed off, or at most a yellow. The crowd, Fletcher and the other scum players made his mind up for him. He is a pathetically weak referee and he showed that all game with his poor decisions.

      (Quote)

  61. I just think that sometimes Colo struggles for both pace and strength, Woodgate could handle any type of player whereas Colo needs a strong partner, despite the fact they’re both the same size and frame..but yeah, he’s got a lot more technical ability.
