Nolan’s happy Hammers! Newcastle 0-1 West Ham

Newcastle succumbed to defeat yesterday losing 1-0 to West Ham United at St James’ Park, with old boy Kevin Nolan on hand to do the damage.

A defeat is always hard to take, especially at home, but when you suffer defeat in the manner we did then questions have to be asked.

A lack of urgency, composure, goal threat and many other things combined ensured yet another abject display was on offer, with West ham seldom looking like losing the lead once Nolan had put the away side into a 37th minute lead. Something needs to change and it needs to change sooner rather than later.

In a first half devoid of any real goal threat the best Newcastle could muster was a shot from Papiss Cisse which went well wide. Hatem Ben Arfa tried to create something with the ball at is his feet but alas everything he tried he failed. At least he was trying though…

It feels odd writing this but it wasn’t until Kevin Nolan was in the right place at the right time to turn a wayward shot into the back of Tim Krul’s net to give the away side the lead eight minutes before half time.

In truth you would be hard pushed to deny West Ham didn’t deserve to be in front.

Half-time: Newcastle 0-1 West Ham

I’d like to say the second half improved for Newcastle, but it didn’t. Demba Ba thought he had equalised but the officials judged that his header hadn’t crossed the line and that Jussi Jaaskelainen had done enough to deny Demba against his former club.

Mike Williamson almost bundled the ball over the line before Hatem Ben Arfa went close direct from a corner, but there really wasn’t a lot to shout about from a black and white perspective. Indeed Andy Carrol could have wrapped up the point for West Ham but for a smart save from Tim Krul, who nearly connected with a header at the other end on a last ditch foray up front.

It wasn’t to be though and that was that.

Full-time: Newcastle 0-1 West Ham

So where do we start? The players need to take some of the blame for being woeful again. The only player I’d give any real credit to is Davide Santon who did alright. Ben Arfa tried also so I’ll give him that. The rest need to sort themselves out and get going again before this season drifts into obscurity.

Alan Pardew also needs to take some of the blame. He is paid to keep players happy, it’s part of his job, but he is mainly paid to get results and whether that means dropping out of form players or playing players in positions they perhaps would prefer not to be played in the he has to make the call. He can’t keep trying 4-4-2 hoping it clicks, he needs to be proactive in trying to make things click. In fairness he didn’t try the tired excuse after Europe post match, which is what I thought he’d try…

Of course he hasn’t been helped by chubby and his not-so-able sidekick Derek, who seem to believe that one first team player per position is enough leaving Pardew with little or no options when it comes to trying to drop players or shuffle the pack.

Next up, Swansea… A must win.

Howay the lads!

  1. TAE – re Benny, I’d certainly agree with your comments last year but I think he’s a lot better this season. I agree he tries to take players on at times and looses the ball, but other times like against Liverpool as one example, he will beat 2-3 players and put a ball into the box that results in a goal. We really don’t have enough players in our squad with that ability and we don’t want to loose that.

Newkie – re your earlier comment, I am one who reckon we need 4-5 new players in. But that’s based on Simpson, Ranger and Xisco leaving. I am completely in favour of our younger players getting their chance, but there needs to be a balance and I think that at the moment we are almost relying on them because of how small our squad is.

  2. even though we aint having the season we might of all hoped for. seen soon postives for us surporters, couple of the kids look decent to me fergie seems to be learning young shola looks like he has a trick or 2 up his sleve but the 1 i like the look of the most is the young kid bigi

  3. In more concerned about the rest of the team not being able to string 5 passes together without loosing it, our defenders reverting to hoofing the ball up the pitch aimlessly and our set piece takers unable to provide decent balls into the box, than our creative players trying to make something happen and occasionally failing.

  5. Sharpy-Of course anyone who leaves should be replaced, and Xisco’s wages should certainly help get us some quality through the door, but I was on about people this summer, without apparently selling anyone.

The thing with the youngsters is that Sammyeobi, Fergie, Vuckic, Tav and Gosling aren’t that young anymore. By the age of 20 you need to be showing you can be relied upon as a rotation option, and help the first team as a super sub, unless you’re a CB or Keeper imo. All of those lads are at that age, they need to get the opportunity and then prove themselves. If we don’t loan them out earlier on in their career, then using them briefly now is kinda pointless.

      (Quote)

  6. -TAE-Yeah so do I. Personally I’d have fergie as first team, if we’re playing 4-4-2, and I think Sammeobi has done well in Europe. I’m not willing to write him off yet and I think he’ll be better than his bro, but it seems those that hate Shola are already writing him off as being just the same. Hopefully they can both stay injury free this year and show us what they can do.

I think Sammeobi makes for a good impact sub as well, pace trickery and a direct style of getting in the box, something we lacked the whole game against west ham.

  7. Sharpy-Yeah, our set pieces are a joke. Cabaye can shoot from free kicks, but corners and inswinging free kicks? They’re terrible. Benny isn’t that much better.

I’d say we need to keep doing some training ground manouveres, but maybe our players should just focus on more basic things like passing and movement… 😕

Any other team would punish a side with the amount of corners we rack up in some games..

  8. well my problem is weather we play the long ball or short ball we cannot play the bloody “right”ball 👿

  9. and a bit more winge, pardew doesnt seem to grasp that we are playing like ***** ie, we are missing this player or that player his last one w/ham used tatics to stop us playing our game, for christ sake man of coarse they did thats their job your job is to counter that or has the game of footy changed now, this just gans owr my heed 😐

      (Quote)

  10. Newkie – I agree about the young uns but of them, being realistic, which can you honestly see being a regular first teamer?. Your right that by early 20’s they should be there or abouts and that why I keep saying if they’re not then we need to get rid.
Personally I’d continue giving Tav, Fergie, and Sammy game time coz they are showing improvement. Vuckic and Gos have a lot still to prove for me, especially when it comes to fitness!.
As well as those players, I think players like Marv, Obertan and Williamson need reviewing as well for me like.

Regarding the set pieces and stuff. I really think that our Euro campaign is meaning that we have far less time on the training ground to get this stuff right. I don’t imagine we are training properly as a team with first teamers being left behind for Thurs nights and different players on a Sunday.
    That really can’t help like.

  15. Sharpy-I agree with your youngster choices, Vuckic clearly has the talent but he can’t seem to stay fit for more than 5mins. We should loan him out for a season, see if he stays fit and how he does, and if there’s nowt special just sell him on 😕

But as for set pieces-they were ***** all last year as well. Cabaye and Benny just can’t take them. I think i’m right in saying we scored once from a corner-a Ba header. I can’t remember us once scoring from a free kick that was not a shot on goal-we got a few of those from Raylor, Cabaye and Ba. But no headed goals 😕

    ———————————————————–
I don’t think that would work. We’ve currently got 22 players named in our 25 man squad (which includes Simpson and Xisco, but doesn’t include Ranger, who still qualifies as under 21 this season) so if those three players leave the size of the squad only reduces by two. If you then bring in 4 or 5 players you have virtually filled up your allocation of places (unless all the players you bring in are aged under 21). That means that you’ve got no room left to include any of the youngsters who have turned 21 this year and who would need to be named in the squad next season. That includes players like Santon, Ferguson, Tavernier, Dummett, Bradden Inman and Conor Newton, to name just six

I have a dream that one day people might begin to grasp the fact that our squad isn’t very small after all, but I just can’t see it happening in my lifetime. 😥

What I find genius about it all is the way last season Pards had this **** idea of letting Barfa roam and gave him a free role in many games.
    Bloody worked wonderfully!! 😈

It just wasn’t funny winning games with moments of brilliance! Who wants to win games like that?????? 😈

No no no! Pards has nailed it this season. He’s put a ten tonne shackle round Barfa’s legs and told him to be more defensive than last season. 😛

It’s genius! The lad is knackered by the time he reaches the halfway line!!! But he works his hardest when in defence. That’s what we all want to see. The most creative player this club has had since Beardsley playing predominantly in defence! 😛

Mind! Take this seriously! I will be livid with Barfa if he decides he wants a transfer cos he wants to play a more offensive role in an attacking team!

How short sighted would that be by him?! 😯

Can he not see the benefits of stifling his strong points and highlighting his weaknesses?!!! 😯

Got to give Pards praise for that like leek like leek like ! ( that’s 3 likes & 2 leeks ) 😯

  37. maybe if Benny passed the feckin ball every now and again instead of taking on every player on his side of the park, every time he gets the ball, he wouldn’t be so tired…Poor Benny, a professional footballer that has to track back and help his team out. What is the world coming too!!

      (Quote)

  38. AAussie maybe if there was someone to pass the ball too, but there normally isn’t because our strikers are still making their way into the box because they were back in our half trying to get the ball,
I wonder what you thought of Ginola and Robert for not coming back and defending ? Oi they were **** and lazy greedy bastads 😆
As for Fergie I hope he does get a real chance in his favoured position and I hope Pards doesn’t think the same as you because I really don’t fancy his chances of taking the LB slot of Santon

      (Quote)

  39. So… The Big Question:
Who do we drop next game?
Ideally we’d play 4-2-3-1 like last season as 4-4-2 isn’t working for us yeah?
    So Anita-Tiote in the two.
Cabaye pushed up, HBA on the right.
    Then what?
Ba on the left, with Cisse up front like last year, or drop one of them?
    Really, really tricky.
I would actually start Ober on the left with Fergie/Sammi coming on if he doesn’t play well. I thought he looked decent there against Bordeaux.#
Can’t decide who out of Ba/Cisse. Surely Ba. But we need Cisse to find form if we are to have any chance of Europe.
Pardew’s number one priority this summer shouldn’t have been mouthing off about transfers; it should have been working out a formation that suits all of our top players. Why the hell was he, and is he still, talking about Carroll? We can’t fit two strikers into our team, let alone three. If we are going to play 4-4-2 we need players that are going to get decent crosses in early or get to the byline and whip it in. If that means flinging Fergie in at the deep end then that’s what we should do.

      (Quote)

  40. @Solanostrumpet – We should drop Cabaye he is the most ineffective mid we have. Neither good going forward nor in protecting defence.

My fear is now that we have a chance to change something with Jonas out Pardew is not the sort who changes philosophy i.e. his game tactic which is simply Ba and fingers crossed, he is likely to put whom ever he replaces Jonas with in the exact same role Jonas does.

      (Quote)

You can’t reason with someone who posts daft stats that would suggest Nolan is better than most the midfielders in the league and chooses to ignore the other valuable stats that people have posted.
The Kid made a lot of very valid points and you chose to ignore all of them.

      (Quote)

  42. ST-I’d agree with that, try out Obertan advanced on the left as that’s the only place he’s looked any good. I just don’t think Fergie is attack minded enough for the position, but he’d be a more *stable* choice and might be able to put more dangerous, low crosses for our strikers in? I think his real strength is crossing from deep though. Sammeobi for his direct style, lack of fear and willingness to get in the box and have a shot. Get him on if Oba is gash.

Start Ba up front. No team can win while they carry a player, and to be honest that’s all we’ve done with Cisse so far this season…We do need to get him scoring, but we need points on the board too…

      (Quote)

  43. Big Dave, come on mate, Benny has plenty of options for a short pass 🙂 loved both Ginola and Robert. I wasn’t debating Benny’s work ethic ?? So not sure what you are getting at? Agree, Fergie will struggle to replace Santon. I think Fergie will struggle for a regular game… I have a good feeling about that 🙂 🙂

      (Quote)

  44. @Solanostrumpet: Kevin Nolan is superior to Cabaye in goals and assists. That was my point.

There is a league table for goals scored, that tells us Nolan is superior to cabaye and many mids as well this is fact. If there was a league table for assists then that table would show Nolan is superior to at least Cabaye. Nolan has mitigating circumstances in this comparison to Cabaye in that he neither takes free kick nor corners which are both further opportunities for cabaye to fashion chances for his team and yet Nolan is still superior.

On the other hand If there was a league table for Fan opinion Cabaye would be at the top purely based on the fanatical zeal of many Newcastle fans have for him.

I’m not interested in distance covered, yellow cards etc unless you can show tome how that translates into something crucial or match defining like a goal or avoidance of a goal.

In short Kevin Nolan is a more crucial player than Cabaye.

I’ve cracked it !!! I can see what Pards is doing. He’s trying to tire Barfa out by making him play defensively and therefore the opposition will stop doubling up on him. Once the oppo are lulled into a false sense of security, he will take the defensive shackles off him and we will shoot up the league! 😯

Pards is always one step ahead ! I think I’ve got him sussed though. He’s done it with Jonas! How didn’t I see it earlier. ?? 😯

I’ll give you that one Pardsy. You had me but I think I’ve cracked the code. 😛

The code is unlocked and I’m looking at the bigger picture. Ashley is doing the same in the transfer window.

Everyone was expecting us to buy a few quality players in the summer to push on but the genius of Big Mikey has blown us mere mortals out the water. It’s brilliance!! 😯

Why have a team pushing on for the champs league when we can finish mid table? Too much glory breeds apathy and it doesn’t become fun anymore. A trophy cabinet can only hold so many trophies! 🙂

This is much better now! We are so grateful for a shot on goal it’s like winning a trophy when we score! The feeling of elation and relief that we haven’t been humiliated. 😯

Of course we don’t want to score too many goals as apathy would set in there as well and therefore I suspect we never even troubled the hammers keeper on purpose. Bloody brilliance Mikey! Bloody brilliance!! 😯

Roll on Swansea! One cross into the box Mikey and you’ll have the masses singing your name! 😆

I bloody hope that little upstart Ferguson doesn’t even consider trying to fly up the wing!! Some youngins just think they can entertain without the permission of the manager!! 😈

If he dare gets a cross in the box then I suggest Pards disciplines him and promptly orders him back in his own half with the other 8 players!! 😯 😯

The formation 8 2 is an original plan created by our manager and young Fergie better understand this as its going to catch on! You watch! You just watch! 😯

Every player has it down to a T. Why should Fergie not understand simple maths?

It’s not difficult to count to 2 and once there’s a mere chance of someone stepping over the halfway line it become 7 3.

I’ve checked the weather forecast and its meant to be windy on Saturday. I would advise Fergie to keep well clear of the halfway line and wear Jonas’ lead boots in case he gets blown into the oppo’s half!! 😯

I’m sure Pards has it all in hand. He’s never failed yet this season to keep his rigid formation so I don’t expect things to change. The man is a genius and a real visionary! 😯

  50. Kevin Nolan is a far superior attacking midfielder to Cabaye, but its a bit unfair comparing the two with goals and assists because Cabaye IS NOT an attacking midfielder.

It would be like comparing Fabregas to Busquets and saying Fabregas is much better, yet Busquets starts ahead of him.

Cabaye is more of an all around midfielder who doesn’t like the advanced role that Nolan plays, but gets around the park a lot more and puts in a lot more tackles and hard graft.

Don’t get the stupid comparisons. In fact I think they would have made a decent midfield partnership.

Why do you choose to ignore them?
Cabaye is a complete midfielder, slightly lacking in pace. He can defend, he can attack, it’s down to Pardew where he plays, he was incredible during that period we played 4-2-3-1 last year. But on form he is equally as good playing deeper. I think he could be world class playing deeper with Tiote if we got the rest of the team in order (2 other defenders that can pass the ball etc)
