Magpies wings clipped by Swans! Newcastle 1-2 Swansea

Sort it out Pardew!
Newcastle succumbed to a second home league defeat within the space of a week as Swansea ran out deserved 2-1 victors at St James’ Park yesterday.

The result leaves us with just one win from our last seven games and surely now questions have to be asked about a number of things.

Firstly the manager needs to take a fair portion of the blame. The tactics have been woeful and our displays are disappointing so the reason for that needs to be found and addressed so things can improve. Speculation is mounting that the manager has pandered to Demba Ba wanting to play as a striker, but to be fair it’s a bloody good job he is as otherwise we’d have nobody scoring goals.

The players also need to take a portion of the blame. Whilst I have no doubt that some of them have limitations and are following tactical instructions by lumping the ball up field, it still doesn’t change the fact that most of them are struggling to pass to a man unmarked merely five yards away. Quite a few times yesterday we saw our own team giving each other “hospital balls” with Cheik Tiote, Mike Williamson and Davide Santon the most guilty.

Finally those upstairs in our boardroom need to understand that a lot of this has been born from their action, or lack of it, in the summer. Injuries and suspension are hitting us hard at the moment, with four of our “purple” players out of the starting side through injury or suspension yesterday. We just don’t have the squad to cope with that which is shocking considering our participation in the Europa League.

As a result of enforced absentees Sammy Ameobi was drafted in to play around Demba Ba up front with Shane Ferguson placed on the left filling in for Jonas Gutierrez. Cheik Tiote returned in midfield replacing the injured Yohan Cabaye whilst mike Williamson continued to fill in for the absent Fabricio Coloccini.

You would have thought that the home side would have been keen to put the disappointment of the previous week behind them, but the performance seemed to suggest otherwise. A lack of urgency and what looks to be a crisis of confidence appears to be affecting the players and all they could manage in the first period was a few potshots from Hatem Ben Arfa and a glanced header from Demba Ba.

Half-time: Newcastle 0-0 Swansea

The second half started much better however. On cam Shola Ameobi to pair up front with Demba Ba, off went Shane Ferguson in a move that saw the younger Ameobi moved out to the left wing. In fairness I don’t think it was anything the Northern Ireland international did wrong, it was just the fact that Demba Ba looked isolated up front and was, in truth, easily dealt with by the Swansea defence had made light work of having just one striker to mark.

A flurry of chances soon followed and although Swansea threatened on the break at that moment in time I thought to myself that if one team was going to take the lead then it would have been us.

That train of thought hit the buffers just before the hour mark though as Tim Krul spooned a clearance straight to Pablo Hernandez who surged forward and crossed for Miguel Michu to powerfully head home and gie the visitors the lead.

From then on I had that sinking feeling. Far from inspiring us the goal seemed to knock us for six and mistakes in our game started appearing. I’m talking simple mistakes, like the mix up between Steven Taylor and Tim Krul that gave away a needless corner and the short back pass that very nearly cost us from Mike Williamson.

Swansea wrapped the points up with three minutes remaining. A quick ball saw Danny Graham released although Tim Krul was equal to his attempt on goal and parried the ball away. Unfortunately Jonathan de Guzman was first too the rebound and smashed the ball past Krul giving his compatriot no chance.

Newcastle did manage to find the net in stoppage time after some good work from Hatem Ben Arfa on the left set up a shot for Sylain Marveaux which thumped off the bar before Demba Ba could stick his head on it and guide into the Gallowgate net, but it was too little too late and the goal was barely celebrated by anybody either on or off the field.

Full-time: Newcastle 1-2 Swansea

A disappointing result with another disappointing performance to go with it. I won;t go on too much. We all have our own opinions on what is going wrong but whatever it is it needs sorting sooner rather than later, and with a trip to Southampton next up in the league things are suddenly starting to look tougher than they should be.

Howay the lads!

  1. Sharpy-Agree about the formation.

But re Ba not being out wide-that’s kinda my point, he was ineffective when he was, so he drifted in a lot. Maybe it did come down to form and him being angry at himself, but eventually he just started shooting a lot more and rarely made chances for himself or others. I just think that if we’re going to play a player like Cisse, everything needs to be made for him, because his other attributes are lacking and he rarely makes a “chance” for himself, although obviously he can score wonder goals from nowt.

I don’t agree with you on the type of striker thing though- I don’t think Bent or Defoe would be ideal partners. People say Ba is greedy and won’t pass. It’s pretty clear Cisse is only a finisher. We certainly don’t want another poacher up there.

I believe he has to now experiment with Barfa playing off the main striker whoever that may be.

  3. Newkie – neither are poachers mate, both come looking for the ball in midfield, whereas the likes of Bent and Defoe play off the CB and look to get behind them, I think Adam Campbell is the closest thing we have to a poacher but he needs time I think. I know he’s injured just now but it would have been good to have seen more of him in the Euro games like.

  4. Troy-I agree…although if Cabaye is out until Jan I wouldn’t mind seeing diamond 4-4-2 with Tiote sitting and Ben Arfa up top…come on Pards, its still 4-4-2, it just has a chance of working 😕

Sharpy-They came looking because they weren’t getting any service, any poacher, even Defoe and Bent will do that. Ba does naturally come back into the midfield and he’s a decent runner from there, imo-that’s why he’s not a classic poacher, but he does posses that reluctance to pass. Cisse is just a finisher. He can’t pass imo.

I haven’t seen that much of Campbell. He’s rumoured to be a good poacher, but that seems to be because of his pace. He seems to get played on the wings quite a lot for the ressies, and sets up a fair share of goals..

      (Quote)

  5. Yeah i agree sharpy. we can’t get another first team striker without losing ba/cisse. someone like Rhodes with potential to surpass them in the future while still offering something now wouldve been perfect

I always had high hopes for this kid as well, but it never happened.

Newkie – I’m not sure we’re strong enough for the diamond. I think you need a really strong defence for that to work. I did like Arsenals formation on Saturday though, and with the players at our disposal, it may work better:

    ————- Krul ————
    Simmo/Saylor/Willo/Santa
    ———-Tiote/Anita ———
    — Oba — Benny — Marv —
    ————— Ba ————–

That, or similar to it would be what I’d go for against Saints, but I have no idea how we should line up on Thursday, coz any injuries and were well and truly buggered.

      (Quote)

  7. Seems we’re all pretty set on the diamond. For all of Oba’s lack of end product, he at least causes defences some headaches, and god knows we need more players out there that are going to do that.

      (Quote)

  8. Troy the thing is Pards does come of with some **** then goes back on it again,
He did say that Benny was going to be a No 10 type which to me means that he would have been playing behind a main striker or behind 2 normally with a pretty free roll but for what I see he has never played there but normally played out on the wing.
That is what annoys me because Benny is our best and most exciting player that IMO could cause untold trouble to teams if he was allowed to play there with a license to do what he wants and not be tied down with defending

  9. Ranger has scored against the mackems. Good led the team out.
Two players that are going to save our season?! 😯 😆
If Ranger got his act together I would happily see him get a run out, he caused problems for the opposition in our year back in the top flight and offers something different. We gave Barton another shot (or two) so I don’t see why not.

      (Quote)

  10. Sharpy-Yeah, I’d be alright with that formation. I think when Colo gets back though we could do a Diamond 4-4-2. I mean, if Pards still wants to pack us full of DMs we could just have Jonas on the right and Anita on the left in a narrow diamond, with Tiote constantly sitting and those two able to ping crosses and help their full backs, on their strong feet…

Dave@234-That’s exactly what I thought, I mean Benny was average when he played early on only behind Ba, but he had only just come back and was finding his feet, and didn’t have much space to work in, that’s why 4-3-1-2 made so much sense, especially after Pards’ comment about Ba playing through the middle, with Cisse.

  12. Still really disappointed with the performance on Sunday. Mostly I am disappointed with Pardew. He picked Ferguson at left midfield and yes he is still inexperienced but I have serious doubts whether he will ever be a premier league midfield player has a great chance at full back. Anyway Pards picks him in midfield and his strength in that position is his ability to cross the ball which he did with regular occurence in the first half but who was in the box, only Ba who scores ocassional goals with his head so the tactic was doomed to failure. Sammy in the first half didn’t know what his role was and neither did the fans know what he was supposed to be doing. Second half with Sammy in Fergies position we started brightly but he went to peices after a while. St James must be a great place to play when we are flying but the fans myself included quickly and easlily let the players hear heavy sighs and moans when things are not going so good.
So we go a goal behind and Pards brings on Bigi. A defensive midfielder who is only a bairn and the poor lad hadn’t a clue what he was supposed to be doing in the final third. Pards then moves Santon who was ripping the right hand side of the Swansea defence to our right and replaces him with Anita. Still don’t understand that switch.
The biggest concern I have with Pardew is his judgement that Simpson and Williamson should be in our starting line up. Rumour had it that someone had to go to St James at eight o clock on Saturday night and tell Williamson who was still looking for Michu that he had gone home.
The inability of Simpson and Williamson to pass the football means we are playing with eight outfield players when in posession of the football.

  14. Ice I am starting to get a bit pissed of with some of Pards tactics and things he says, and I hate excuses and lately he has been coming off with all sorts of *****

      (Quote)

  15. The most annoying saying of Pards is ” if im honest” I was always told that if some has to keep telling you **** like if im honest, I swear, honestly, then they are normally telling lies, if im honest it pisses me off to think that Pards thinks were thick as ****

      (Quote)

  16. Ice im a firm believer in that if we play **** just come out and say we weren’t up to the standard and weren’t good enough, I don’t expect him to single people out I just want him to be straight with us and don’t talk to us like we’re stupid, fuk we get enough of that **** on here

      (Quote)

  17. 😆 😆

tbf, Pards can’t be honest as a few fans get their knickers in a twist if the team are criticised 🙄 😉

  18. Yeah right enough Richie as we see it on here often enough when someone criticises the team next thing you know they’re throwing their toys outta the pram and abusing people 😆

  19. The good news-ish, is that we are 2 points better off than we were in our relegation season…the bad news is that back then we then went on a 6 match unbeaten run, anyone seeing that happen again? 😯 …..and I’m a positive fecker 😉

      (Quote)

  20. Richie with the way we have been playing, the injuries and lack of any sort of morale or spirit I can’t see us going on a 6 game unbeaten run, but what I can see is us been at the wrong end of a hammering before the yrs out, luckily up to now we have avoided it due mostly to the lack of the other team taking their chances but I do believe that some team soon will take the chances and put the pressure on us 👿

      (Quote)

  21. Dave..aye, I do think in patches we played a bit better(not hard to really) at the weekend than we have been and we created more chances, but it means **** all if you don’t score more than the oppo. Beaten at home off 2 average teams is **** on it’s own but when you add it to previous performances as well…..whey it’s got me a bit down to be honest, and I’m generally a little ray of sunshine 😆

      (Quote)

  22. Richie@251 ,I said after saturdays game we need 3 wins to have 23 points by xmas ,we would be halfway safe by my reckoning .Trouble is I just can’t see us getting that tbh, our winable games Saints and stoke and Wigwam are only viewed that way cause they ain’t top clubs . saints are fighting to stay up already and Stoke away is always a devil and we won’t outstoke them again like last year cause they will be ready for that tactic you can bet. Then there is Wigwam who can be a proper banana skin at the best of times. Nope ,we are in big trouble my friends make no mistake ,too many key players either out or out of form and the team spirit running on empty along seemingly with any decent tactics. 🙄

      (Quote)

  23. Well we may just pray that we win a game then maybe we can up our spirits a bit, but it won’t hide the fact we have been dire.
Yeah Richie in parts we weren’t bad and we showed bits of decent stuff but it didn’t win us the game 😈 IMO there is too many players not up to prem standard yet and in their defence it’s not really their fault

      (Quote)

  24. I agree with Richie @ 186.

Blogs are all about opinions. Anyone who criticises another blogger for having an opinion is a moron.

And it seems I have to say it yet again. Phew, I didn’t think it was so hard to agree with you guys. Pardew has got it all wrong and the fans who watch the game have it right.

That must be about the fourth time I’ve said that or something similar and yet I’m still being sniped at – hmm, must be by the abovementioned morons.

Noun 1. twerp – someone who is regarded as contemptible
    twirp, twit
simpleton, simple – a person lacking intelligence or common sense

Wow! Did I really mean that? 😯

Not at all! What’s the word anyone pleaee? for someone who criticises others sarcasticly but refuses to explain their views?

    Hmm?

    Twerp

Informal a silly, weak-minded, or contemptible person
    [of unknown origin]
    twerpy , twirpy adj
    Originate from Australia
Often known in the bush as a twerpsta
Incredibly clueless with little known knowledge of soccer
    (Bigot, sneak, bush ******)

I’ve just spoke to Siri on my IPhone 5 and and I asked, ” do Australians have chips on their shoulders?”

Wow! That was harsh from Siri. 😯

I never knew that was the meaning of twerp! 😯

Begas, lets be nice with each other or it will end up in a slagging match.
    I will set my stall out;

Today you have shown your true colours. You criticise the people on this blog for having the arrogance of criticising the club we pay to go and watch.

You live 8000k miles away and have no affinity to the club. I know this may seem harsh and I fully expect the nicey nicey brigade to try and defend you ( just in case they lose a foreign supporter) but I don’t give a ****.

I am always of the opinion that those who have no affinity to the club, ie either live or were born on Tyneside will never have the same passion as those who adopt the club as their favourite team.

The more I listen to you, Aussie Mag, Stevo then that belief gets stronger.

Black n white runs through my entire life. I can see from foreigners posts that it simply doesn’t for you.

It’s almost clinical for you. No emotion beyond basic human thoughts about everyday matters.

I really believe you don’t understand, the passion, love, hatred, respect, loyalty and everything else that goes with your roots, origins, city, being a Geordie, beliefs, cry, laugh, gutted and being elated.

Remembering the days we stood in the gallowgate end getting pissed on by the rain and the bloke behind us, 15 minutes to push your way to to the bogs and back which were stinking and in the open air, amongst 15k fans with the Leazes end demolished into the size of a cow byre, Mirandinha being the first Brazilian to play for an English club, the Milburn stand was wooden with wooden seats! We had Bukta (now extinct) first team shirts, my heroes lived up the street, Mick Martin, Nigel Walker, dare I say it, Bobby Shinton number 9 used to do his shopping at Prestos supermarket in Whickham when I used to be getting my pie and jam roll forum school bait. At the weekend I would watch him try and score for the toon with as much hope as you have as convincing me that you understand our thoughts passion and love for the club.

    You simply don’t. 😉

Oh and by the way, for anyone wanting to stick up for poor little Begas then I suggest you read all his posts today which simply demonstrate he has no passion to defend himself.

So please stop hiding behind your twerpy charade and tell us all why you think the comments made by the bloggers are wrong for criticising Pardew? 😛

      (Quote)

  32. Troy, I don’t want to get into a holier than thou argument, but I was born on Tyneside. I first went to St James’ Park in 1964. I spent a lot of my younger days singing on the terraces of the Leazes End. I stood in the **** and swayed in the crowd in an over full stadium, often with my feet off the ground. I got rained on while queueing all night for tickets to the Fairs Cup Final. Sure, distance has dimmed that connection and I’m not embroiled in the daily life of a Newcastle fan on Tyneside. This is one of the reasons I gravitated to this blog: to keep in touch with a life long passion of mine. Not being on Tyneside may be a blessing or may not – I prefer Australia. On the few occasions I’ve been to the area in the last 10 years I’ve seen the intensity of the media and fan scrutiny (and lapped it up), but I also recognise that that intensity can fuel a disproportionate view of the importance of certain things. Perhaps not being involved in the intensity has given me a different perspective – whether that perspective is more rational or not is open to debate.

I can’t do anything at all about your perceptions of me personally. I don’t particularly care what you think of me. People draw conclusions about others for a multitude of reasons, many of which are deep and many are shallow. Banter it seems is in the eye of the beholder.

You want to know what I think?

I think we are not playing to our strengths. Our strengths are few and far between because we don’t have quality in depth – which is a direct result of a failure to bring in the required 4-5 players in the off season. Injuries haven’t helped but we get them every season and should have been factored into the recruitment program.

Our main strength is in the individual skills of Ben Arfa, Ba and Cisse, and the defensive capabilities of Tiote and Cabaye – the former as a player to break up play and the latter for his box-to-box running.

Notwithstanding that some of these players are out of form, which may be the result of how we set out our game, I think we need to use these players (along with Colo, Santon and Krul) as our core group.

I would say that we can do no worse than returning to the team that did so well in a few games at the latter part of last year.

I’m not one for talking 442, 433 or whatever as they are simplistic ways of representing an attacking formation and says nothing about how you defend or transition from one to another.

At the present time, I think we have to play with a heavy midfield presence in order to pass the ball forward rather than using the longer ball. That means using Anita/Marveaux/Tiote/Cabaye/Obertan to provide width, movement, and defensive cover.

I think we have to do a lot of work on set pieces.

See, nothing different to what others have said. That’s why I’ve been saying how much I agree with the very perceptive opinions of fellow bloggers.

  36. Dear Chronicle readers,

I take this opportunity to enlighten you all regarding my recent contact with our new Policing Crime Commissioner Vera Baird.

Pre-Election Day, 15th November, Mrs Baird was contactable via her Facebook and Twitter sites, amongst I’m sure, other media avenues. She may still be? I don’t know as she barred me pre-election from both sites.

    Why?

Because I politely challenged her about her expenses claims whilst she was employed as the Solicitor General.

To be fair, Mrs Baird explained that whilst she was on a salary of £125k per year, it was not her who claimed several hundred pounds for Xmas decorations but her housekeeper and Mrs Baird was unaware of the purchase.

I accepted her explanation and gave her the benefit of doubt. She actually told me on Facebook that all the expenses for the Xmas decorations were repaid by herself.

May I add, this was only after the media unearthed it!

    Good on you Mrs Baird!

I then asked her about an article which The Mail newspaper ran. This article accused her of spending in the region of £80k on her second home in order to buy new windows, doors and other fixings on her second home. This also included decorative pieces of hardware which the claims office ultimately rejected as being too extravagant.

Now let’s make this clear, the article stipulates that Mrs Baird was not breaking the rules, but was questioning why she made such extravagant claims.

It also challenged why she bought the house for £100k and after the refurbishment was complete, incidentally at the tax payers expense, she then sold it for, in excess of £250k without paying capital gains tax on the profit.

As a potential voter in the election, I wanted to know whether these allegations were true for understandable reasons.

Bearing in mind the lack of information distributed by the Government about the candidates, mainly resulted in the public having to research information for themselves.

It wasn’t too long after asking whether the accusations were true that I knew I could not vote for this lady.

As stated earlier, Mrs Baird barred me from her Facebook and twitter sites.

I retain the copies of the original posts which Mrs Baird deleted.

I would like to take this opportunity to have my question printed, knowing it can’t be deleted, and ask Mrs Baird whether she believes it was morally correct to claim in excess of £80k for her second home, including metal ornamental sculptures and then sell it at a huge profit and also whether she paid capital gains tax on the profit she made.

She may have legitimate answers and if so, I will acknowledge them.

However, to delete my questions on the media sites make me believe that the accusations are true.

    I pose this to your readers;

Is it any wonder why she attained less than 10% of the Northumbria vote when she is prepared to delete my questions on an open forum in which she invites questions?

I look forward to her detailed response.

    Yours dismayed,

    Troy Stavers.

Fair enough though, sounds good. Maybe Troy will be too scared of you to comment anymore 😆

  44. Now you’ve got me reminiscing … Looking back, I was a basket case. The monks taught me discipline, and one of them – Prama, who was in his 50s at the time and simply awesome at keeping a ball in the air – talked to me about football for hours. It was because of him that I learned to channel my natural aggression into a game. He was the one who convinced me to find a team in Australia when it became apparent that I was going to move there.

    It’s funny how things happen.

  47. Troy, is Vera an aussie from Nepal then? Or am I getting mixed up among the stories here. Who needs football eh?

  48. The manager should rightly take some blame for the woeful style and performances, But the players just look devoid of the same fight we showed last season. We need a serious shot in the arm and i think we can get it on thursday. Play Ba, Cisse, Benny, Tiote, Anita, Colo, Krul as strong as we can against maritimo get out of the group and put the europa league on the back burner until late february (send the stiffs to bordeaux)

Bang in a few against by far the worst team in the group, Get some confidence back and go to southampton on a high…

  49. CC – that’s also what I’d do. We need to develop as a team again. Play the best 11 in all the games. If they’re not up to it – get rid!

  50. Would be interested to hear why nobody considers us as relegation material this season ?
Is it because there are far worse teams than us that are below us already ?
I said a couple of days ago and I maintain now, that we are playing WORSE this season than we did in our relegation season.
The way I see it is that we are really close to being deep in the ****.
Two key matches before xmas will decide it for me. Southampton away on sunday and QPR at home on 22nd Dec.
It will not surprise me if we lose both of them. 😯 if we continue to play the same clueless football we have up til now.
Of course this could all be offset by us beating manure and arsenal away.
    rofl 😕 😆
So come on folks, please enlighten me as to who is more deserving of relegation than us ?

  51. Totally agree CC. We should play our strongest team on Thursday. We have to try and get some form back into our team. But Ba and Cisse ?
    ffs 👿

  52. The goal difference is interesting too.
We are not keeping clean sheets, but we aren’t scoring enough goals either. You cant have it both ways and survive for very long.

  53. @294

Ba and Cisse played together in some of our best performances from last season (West brom away, Liverpool and Stoke at SJP, Chelsea away)

Pardew might need to be braver with Ba’s position, It might not work as a pairing but they certainly can play in the same team if the manager grows a spine and tweaks it a bit…

  54. Yeah CC they played together in a team, but only Cisse was scoring.
If you take Cisse’s goals away from the 2nd half of last season, then we are where we are now.
IMO it never works when they play together. Its got to be one or the other.
I think maybe Cisse only did so well, because of Ba’s great start to the season.
Other teams were more worried about Ba than Cisse, which took the pressure of Cisse.

  55. By the end of last season, we had been sussed out.
Cisse only scored 1 goal in the last 4 matches, 3 of which were at away admittedly.
Apart from Cisse, our only other scorers were HBA and Cabaye.
oh not forgetting Sholas goal v scum of course.
