Game On! Newcastle v C.S. Maritimo

Another European night at SJP!
Newcastle take on Portuguese outfit S.C.Maritimo this evening looking to put a string of disappointing domestic results behind them and secure passage in the Europa League knockout stages.

As explained in my match preview , there are several different permutations that would see us qualify and ultimately we could see ourselves with European football beyond the new year even with a defeat this evening.

However I’d like to be hopelessly and completely unreasonably positive by not even contemplating that. Instead what I want to see is a morale boosting victory which will hopefully instil a bit of confidence into a group of players that have increasingly looked shaky as the weeks have gone on. Mind you, what I wish for and what I get are usually two completely different things!

We are live on ESPN tonight which is great news if you subscribe to the channel and can’t make it to the game as it means that there are likely to be some streams knocking about. Even if there is nothing from ESPN there are several other overseas channels broadcasting the game so fingers crossed. Usual rules apply, those being that of you find a decent stream please share it with your fellow United fans.

Early team news has been discussed, as has injury news, in the previously linked match preview, however real team news will be added in below as and when it becomes available.

Howay the lads!

Newcastle:
Krul; Simpson, S.Taylor, Coloccini (c), Santon; Anita, Bigirimana; Sammy Ameobi, Ben Arfa, Marveaux; Cisse.
Subs:
Elliot, Tavernier, Ferguson, Williamson, Abeid, Amalfitano, Ba.
C.S. Maritimo:
Salin; Diogo, Roberge, Rosario, Ferreira; Luiz, Miranda, Simao; Dias, Adilson, Sami.
Subs:
Ricardo, Fidelis, Olim, Briguel, Antonio, Brigido, Guilherme

  1. HBA39
Bigi is lost. We are gonna have to wait a couple of seasons before he is anything like and has to play first team football in that time. Will learn nothing in the reserves

  2. I think it was a poor decision by Pardew to play HBA in a ‘not important’ game considering we have so many injuries. He then goes on to put Ba in after witnessing HBA get injured the only two players at the mo looking anything like dangerous for us and we have the advantage in this game. God forbid Ba goes off injured too.

This if poor poor poor foresight.

  3. Sammy ameobi, if he is the future of our club then we are in big trouble!!!!
Sorry to be negative but he has done nothing yet.

  4. Jesus a few weeks ago people were criticizing Pardew for not playing the big names in these games. When he does and one gets injured he should have rested them.
Our squad is too thin (the boards fault) and so we really had very little choice but to give Benny or Ba a run. It may have backfired but the criticism (once again) should fall on the short sightedness of not investing in the squad rather than the man management (though that should be criticized for LOTS of other things).

  5. As for the game it has been horrendous (from both sides). We will probably progress but as others have said we need to be concerned at what we are down to. I was hoping Abeid would come through- can’t imagine he’s worse than Anita.

  6. So if Clattenburg is innocent then what will the FA do to Chelski I wonder.

****, I was right it’s Benny’s hammy 🙁 🙁 🙁 **** the Saints will be rubbing their hands now our only effective player is crocked 👿

  7. 10 first teamers out injured ffs, what’s wrong with our players fitness levels ,this can’t all be bad luck. 😕

      (Quote)

  8. As for Benny shouldn’t have been playing , well he could get injuried in training so should we stop training ? fuk maybe thats why we can’t seem to pass too well maybe Pards is afraid incase the players pick up a training ground injury so we just stick to fifa on the xbox

      (Quote)

  9. Seriously if Krul kicks the ball upfield one more time I’m going to gouge my eyes out. We just gift them possession everytime.

      (Quote)

  10. Fucking Steven Taylor – you not heard of defending you useless **** – just shepard him out of play rather than crossing your legs like a nun !

      (Quote)

  11. not too worry we have a set play – oh yeah, we have yet to score in 12 games from a set piece …. make that 13

      (Quote)

  12. Given that both Spurs and Liverpool need to get results from last game to progress and they are playing full strength teams !
Suppose we should be grateful, hopefully HBA and Cisse injuries not too bad – HBA will be a huge miss

  13. Jesus christ we were poor. It’s clear we are thin with now 11 players out but that doesn’t excuse players not being able to pass, or track, or tackle, or move. At times we were clueless.

Where do we go from here? We have no finesse in midfield and just can’t hold the ball. Tiote might win it but isn’t going to help our passing game. So with Cabaye and maybe Ben Arfa out, who do we turn to?

      (Quote)

  14. Well very unimpressive ,we are through and can field a second string side for the last game but this performance and the injuries should now have the alarm bells ringing . We are just not the team we were last season and it needs sorted quickly or the dreaded relegation dog fight will be upon us . 😯

      (Quote)

  15. Well done Maritimo. Deserved at least a draw. We are a poor side and there is no two ways about it. The coaching just isn’t there and we struggle to pass quickly and incisively.

Did anyone play well? Even HBA was poor today.

I liked the look of Amalfitano when he came on. Not because he was great, but because he is our only player to pass and then move after. Watch our players when they pass the ball. They either start walking or stop completely. Another one of football’s basics that seem to be missing from our team.

      (Quote)

  16. By the way, are people still of the opinion Steven Taylor could captain England one day? He is 3rd choice at best. Poor player often made to look half decent by Coloccini.

      (Quote)

  17. Poor. Did we win the ball once from a Krul goal kick? I would have to watch it again but didn’t their goal stem from a goal kick from Krul that gave them possession. I don’t blame Krul. Everyone can see it so why can’t the coaches?

      (Quote)

  18. Dave@111 ,Ready made excuse right there. Fact is we needed strength in depth to deal with such situations but thanks to Jabba and Lamearse ,we’re fooked .

      (Quote)

  19. Newkie 😳 secrets out 😯

Groucho @122 ,Ah yes forgot about that ,fair play then but dec1st it has to go. 😆

      (Quote)

  20. Well that was ****!

We will be playing the tea lady up front with the groundsman making up the numbers in defense if things keep going like this. They will most likely do better than this lot too.

      (Quote)

  21. We should have had some transfers in, but Steven Taylor, vaunted as the Geordie hero should be putting some more fucking effort in. He should be third choice after this Jan-agree with The Kid.

      (Quote)

  22. The thing about Steven Taylor is he’s been living off of this “young defender/potential captain” nonsense for far too long. He’s still making the same mistakes he was four years ago i.e. getting caught under the ball, bad decision making in 1v1’s, leaving his markers to pursue lost causes. He’s just not an intelligent defender and it’s time for people to accept it. Poor/mediocre player.

      (Quote)

  23. Pards looks really pissed off but didn’t like the way he said HBA wasn’t all the club when the interviewer said how important a loss he would be in next game.

      (Quote)

  24. I sometimes think Benny would have to score whilst doing cartwheels to get decent praise from Pards. 🙄

      (Quote)

  25. The Kid-Aye it’s a real shame, if he could have developed over the years in relation to how he started his career he could have been brilliant by the time he peaked-in three/four years. As it is I see no improvement. Same **** different match.

Glad that Marveux showed his quality, but he’s got an annoying knack of disappearing in games 😕

Kim-he did have an average game though….even if he’s been in our top 3 players so far…

      (Quote)

  26. The Kid see thats the great thing about here we’re all entitiled to our own opinions, and to me Saylor made one **** up and it cost us 2 pts but Colo done the same a few games back so is he not good enough ? for me Saylor is a good CB and if we get a better CB then even better but for now he’ll do me 😉
By the way you were saying you liked the look of Amalfitano well I could say he was guilty for standing of and not trying to get into Fidelis before he got into the box, and Rob Lee thinks the same

      (Quote)

  27. The Kid @ 128 ” He’s just not an intelligent defender and it’s time for people to accept it. Poor/mediocre player.”

Why because you say so ? Yeah sure we’ll all bow down to your greater knowledge 😳

      (Quote)

  28. amazing. 👿 ❗ ❗
we can pass and move the ball from the final 3rd back to our keeper in about 3 or 4 moves. Great stuff. “here I dont want it, you have it. No dont give it to me, I dont know what to do with it. **** it give it to Krul to hoof up field.”
    clueless hopeless tosh.
so dont even mention the 2nd half. wtf ❓ 👿
    Cisse / offside 👿
    Cisse / offside 😳
    Cisse / offside 😳 😳 😳
    ffs
sameobi is a steaming pile of shyte. wouldn’t even make it in the championship imo. Waste of space.
This team is going nowhere except backwards.
    Pardew. Doh !!! Nuts.
    ****.
    we need help
    😥

  29. Hopefully the relief of not playing at home on sunday will get some creative juices flowing. Otherwise I see a shock (NOT) on the cards.

      (Quote)

  30. Man that was absolutely gash. We are way too light weight, lose all 50-50’s, and cannot keep the ball. Everybody plays better football than us, we’re stuck in a tappy lappy training ground no tackling tempo, and we cannot shake ourselves out of it. Worrying times imo… get steamed into them Pardew and shake them up ffs…

      (Quote)

  31. Beardsley 😆 Great shout about our reverse incisive passing, if we could do it the other way we’d be hitting double figures 😆

I agree about Cisse as well….people want Ba to pass to Cisse? Ba passes to Cisse….offside. Ba looks to pass to Cisse, oh, he’s offside. Ba takes a shot or tries to dribble….”*** WHY DOESN’T BA PASS TO CISSE?!”

      (Quote)

  32. Newkie ,the interviewer said he’ll be a miss sunday being one of the best players you have and Pards didn’t acknowledge it just muttered something about him not being all the club 🙄 All he had to do was say yes and hopefully he won’t be out too long . It came off as a little disrespectful imo. I don’t think Benny is his type of player tbh.

      (Quote)

  33. Kim-Fair enough, I didn’t really hear the interview. I imagine he was pissed off in general, definitely feeling the pressure.

      (Quote)

  34. “Why because you say so ? Yeah sure we’ll all bow down to your greater knowledge”

You could do that…Or you could just watch him four or five years ago and then watch him this season. Then ask yourself, has this player actually improved? Or alternatively you could ask yourself why it’s so hard to find fans who rate him other than Toon fans? Or you could check his abysmal stats?…

    Tackles per game: 0.3
    Interceptions per game: 0.3
    Clearances per game: 6.4

So there we have it. A typically unintelligent lump of a defender who’s only use is to clear balls with his head.

Compare this to Coloccini, shall we?

    Tackles per game: 2.6
    Interceptions per game: 2.6
    Clearances per game: 4.4

    Gulf, in, class.

Why not compare him to the much maligned Mike Williamson, whose only use is to “win headers” according to some?

    Tackles per game: 1.6
    Interceptions per game: 0.7
    Clearances per game: 10.5

Oh dear, not looking great for ol’ Tayls, is it?

Wait, one last comparison. Caulker was recently called up to the England squad. Undeserved many have said. Let’s see how he compares to Steven, shall we?

    Tackles per game: 0.9
    Interceptions per game: 1.5
    Clearances per game: 10.8

No way?! Steven Taylor’s the worst of the lot?! Never saw that coming 🙄

      (Quote)

  35. Newkie ,He was looking all around ,anywhere but the camera ,made him look really shifty like he was a lookout for a bank job 😆 He was dismissive of the importance of HBA then went on to say the reason we went off the boil was cause of HBA and Cisse going off 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  36. whats with the pass and stand still as statues ****?
I can understand Marv getting cramp etc, as he has no match time hardly under his belt. Thought he played canny over all.
    And Cisse’s offside AGAIN 😳

      (Quote)

  37. Kid you really do love the stats it’s a wonder you can find time to watch a game with studying stats so much.
I think I will stick to what I think of him through watching him, and i’ll leave the stats to you 😉
