Game On! Bordeaux v Newcastle

Game On at Bordeaux
Newcastle conclude their Europa League group stage campaign this evening by visiting group leaders Bordeaux.

Only a win for United will be enough to ensure top spot for Alan Pardew and his side and anything else will mean that second place in the group will have to do.

In fairness the important thing is done and that is qualification for both sides. The only issue to decide is who will get the coveted seeded draw which will see the team that grabs first place be able to take advantage of a home game in the second leg of the next round. Naturally that might not be an advantage at all in the end and if you want to progress you need to beat what is in front of you anyway.

The big early team news in the supposed inclusion of Nile Ranger who will start a game for United for the first time in a very long time. His history aside, he has apparently been applying himself in training and doing the basics, such as turning up on time, right. He has a chance and now it’s up to him to take it.

The game is live on ESPN and is also being broadcast by a number of overseas TV channels so picking up a stream should be easy enough. Normal rules apply, those being that if you happen to come across a good stream then please post a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will hopefully be updated in full below as and when it becomes available. I say hopefully as I’ll be on my way to Amsterdam and may be caught in traffic so I’m hoping someone else will be about to keep an eye on things. If not keep an eye on the comments as team news will be posted by someone somewhere.

Howay the lads!

This post was printed by B&B after 20 hrs of countering half a dozen bloggers opinions that to sack Pardew now would be a wrong.
(I use this one, but there are many more, just because its so long after the debate started)
To this day, he is still saying he doesn’t want Pardew sacked now.

    He wonders why we are confused. 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛 😛

My point about ❓ comparing wage bills and money paid for our current squad against other teams is that some fans keep blaming the board and not Pardew for the current malaise. I’m saying that Pardew took charge of a highly talented side irrespective of whether or not the Carroll cash is sitting in the bank. His very expensive, well paid bunch of soccer stars is like a Rolls-Royce in terms of quality compared to some other clubs’ family saloons and estate cars. If anyone had the choice of squads to take into the new season, where do you think ours would rank? Do you think he would have swapped ours for WBA’s?
I take Troy’s point that it seems crazy to be calling for his head so soon. However, I see all the signs of a man who has lost confidence in his own ability. The more wrong calls he makes, the more he loses the players. Once a club gets into a malaise like this, it is usually a sign of unrest and disenchantment in the camp. The rumours of this were rife in the summer. What seems like a very good team on paper can prove ver different on the football field, and who is to blame for that?
You may say it’s crazy to call for Pardew’s head so soon, but it is a seemingly crazy statistical fact that, on average, managers only last a little over a couple of seasons. It is also seemingly crazy for any business to appoint a man to a top job who has been sacked by his previous employers for presiding over dreadful runs of poor performances. Other crazy statistical facts are that we’ve went about two years without scoring from a set piece and lord knows how many games since we came back from a goal down. Whose responsibility is that?
The stakes this season are massive, and we can’t afford to keep capitulating. Unfortunately, there are no signs that anything is happening on the training ground to put things right. Is it so crazy to ditch a manager these days when, these days, the manager seems to have little or no input scouting and selecting the personnel, something that was the main part of a manager’s job in the past?
Finally, Troy, you say Pardew needs time. However, you never seem to deal head on with my point that Pardew said he was happy going into the season with the squad he had. You keep blaming the board for letting him down. Okay we’ve had a good share of injuries but injuries are inevitable; we’re playing other clubs who also suffering the same way.
The fact is that clubs haven’t got the time to give a manager because, if the manager ever turns a major slump around, it is rarely in the same season. The stakes this season are simply too big. Okay, we’re not in a mjor slump quite yet, but I can’t see how he’s going to turn this around. With every loss the pressure is going to mount further on Pardew, the fans and crucially the board.

    @Mark

There are plenty of good managers out there, its whether they want to commit career suicide with us. I don’t believe anything has changed since a we last looked for a manager 2 years ago.

B&B seems to think different but doesn’t evidence it.

      (Quote)

  11. I don’t want to see Pards go. as I mentioned earlier the next manager will be in exactly the same predicament. better the devil u know an al tht 🙂

  12. With that i don’t know what kind of man city we gonna face after our match against fulham. 😐

      (Quote)

  13. Troy @ 365 Taking things out of context again. You’ve already admitted I never said what you accuse me of saying, but you can’t help trying to save face. To do so, you use your usual tactic of taking one post out of context (a post by the way in which I never called for Pardew’s sacking). So why don’t you post the other posts where I say I’m not calling for Pards to be sacked? You’ve lost the plot fella:lol: 😆 😆

Have I missed where you answer my question as to why you’re not shouting for Ashley to get out because that is the logical consequence of your argument?

I’ve mentioned Lee Clark. Would anyone be too disappointed if we replaced Pardew with Clark? Just to be clear for Troy’s sake in case he is confused, I’m not advocating Clark and I’m not advocating Pardew to be sacked at this time. 🙄

Troy – Who are the good managers? Why would they be committing career suicide? Why has nothing changed in two years, given as you have said, Ashley is learning? You never answer the difficult questions put to you. 🙄 So put up or shut up! 😆

  16. Troy – It seems to me you can’t think of any better managers or any better owners as a realistic possibility? 😆 When did you become quote so fatalistic? 😆 Do you want he number for the Samaritans? 😯

    @B&B

Time and time again I point out to you that you don’t read posts and you don’t understand how to debate.

To be a good debater you must master the art of recollection.

    You’re more of a masturbater. 😛

Yes you’ve missed my answer to why I don’t sing Ashley out. Just like you missed me nailing my colours to the mast earlier. It didn’t stop you asking again though.

I have no need to apologise for misrepresenting you. I haven’t. Your posts for almost 24 hrs contradicted a group of people’s opinions that to call for Pardews sacking now was wrong.

The above post is one of several where you respond to me stating you wanted him sacked.

Read my post beforehand, I accuse you. Your answer above doesn’t challenge me but provides a contrary viewpoint.

I’ve already stated that Big Dave has stated that he thought you wanted him sacked now.
Mark thought your change of tack calling for him to resign was a polite was of saying you wanted him sacked. Trumpet, Toon Chicken and Sharpy all gave up on you. All 3 are debating with you about his sacking now.

Regarding managers being able to replace Pardew, I’ve told you time and time again. There’s hundreds of top managers out there, but none willing to come to Newcastle. My position hasn’t changed. I don’t foresee Pardew getting the sack but you do. You would want him to resign tomorrow. Surely you must have an idea.? You believe there’s loads who would walk over hot coals to manage us with proven track records and not been sacked like Pardew.

It’s been a week now. A week is a long time to think and not come up with one name. 😆

      (Quote)

  18. B+B is Clark one of your Clough like managers that you want ? or are you just thinking out loud 😀
I for one don’t think Clark would be any better than Pards I would say Pards at this moment in time is better but maybe in the future Clark will turn out to be a top Manager 😉

      (Quote)

  19. Dave – Do you understand any of that rubbish that Troy has posted @ 398? It reads like he’s pissed. He can’t find one quote where I say I want Pards sacked. Even though it’s all in writing. He’s even admitted as much, but he still wants to labour the point. I despair. 😈

I may have missed his answer as to why he doesn’t sing “Ashley out”. That’s because I don’t read every single post. He thinks everyone must follow every single post. 🙄 Is he unable to repeat his reasons why he doesn’t lead the chants of Ashley out?

Troy says, “You believe there’s loads who would walk over hot coals to manage us with proven track records and not been sacked like Pardew.” I have never said that the next manager should never have been sacked in his career. The most important thing is whether they have been sacked at the end of a desperate run so that sacking was the only answer. That is what I predict will happen to Pards just as it has happened to him in the past.

I put Clark into the mix because, if he became manager, I would have renewed enthusiam and have more optimism. That does not mean I am asking for Clark to be manager. It is just one name thrown in. I have to make that abundantly clear otherwise, after many posts from Troy, he will say that that is what everyone had assumed I was asking for by my comment.

When I mention Clough, chance would be a fine thing. What I meant was a manager that can take a bunch of 11 players and get them to play as if they are 12; to bring that magic ingredient that results in the whole being greater than the sum of the parts. There are some managers out there who seem to manage it consistently, but Pards isn’t one of them; he ends up the opposite. It goes back to my question as to which squad, if you were a manager, would you select at the beginning of the season given the choice. Has Troy side-stepped that one? 😆

Even though I predict Pards will fail, I really do wish him all the best and think he should be given more time to be fair to him. What does Troy not get about that? 🙄

      (Quote)

  20. Two comments from Troy:

“I thought B&B wanted him sacked now by the comments he made last week, but when I challenged him about it, he told me he had never said such a thing. I reviewed his posts and to be fair, despite him saying everything but those particular words it did fool me as well.”

THEN in a comment to me

“The above post is one of several where you respond to me stating you wanted him sacked.”

Troy – Eh? Where have I ever stated I wanted him sacked in the above post?

I have come to the conclusion that your mind cannnot operate on a higher level where subtleties are involved. Its troglodyte reasoning with you, if that isn’t an oxymoron.

      (Quote)

  21. Dave @ 401 – No. I have said there is a whole world of managers out there. The club needs to do its homework and due diligence. I don’t have the resources or inclination. It just makes common sense that, in all the managers in all the world, Pards can’t be the best that our great club could attract, particularly given his poor c.v. There must be many more better ones who can manage to make the whole morethan the sum of the parts.

I would love to hear your and Troy’s logic in one post as to what you would like to see realistically happen. If you and Troy think Ashley is learning are you wanting rid of him? Is he the problem? Apologies if you’ve stated this before. I would also like to know where you ranked our squad at the start of the season?

      (Quote)

  22. B+B at the start of this season I did say we would struggle because we didn’t strengthen the team and with the extra games etc it was IMO a massive mistake.
As for the Club I honestly don’t see us going anywhere under the current Regime and their blue print for the Club as I can’t see it working without money being spent that is the football climate we have.
So if there was someone willing to buy the club I honestly can’t see them being any worse than Jabba, because again IMO Jabba will be happy to let us continually be a bottom half team because he will still make money out of us and will keep selling our best player so as to bring in a couple more relatively unknown cheap players then wait until they become better then sell and start it all over again
I honestly can’t see us becoming steady challengers under the regime we have

      (Quote)

  23. Dave – I hear all that, but that is why I ask you where you ranked our squad at the start of the season. At the start of the season how many squads would you have chosen in front of ours? For some reason I can’t get an answer from anyone on that. I consistently say we had a very good squad. I wouldn’t have swapped it for any but the most obvious five or six.

      (Quote)

  24. Munich – Martinez has a much better managerial record than Pards, who has an unenviable record of poor performances ending in sackings.

      (Quote)

  25. B+B where did you get the info that he is better than Pards are you going by his win ratio stats ???
As for what team I would prefer over ours I really couldn’t answer that because I only know some of the other teams player because tbh I don’t really care what others teams are like, I only support the Toon so that’s the only team I know about, and that isn’t meant to be a nasty answer 😉

      (Quote)

  26. Dave – I’m going by records of performances ending in sackings. I haven’t looked at win ratio’s, which is why I say you’ve got to do your due diligence.

You surely know whether you would have swapped our squad’s for Wigan’s or Stoke’s or WBA’s or West Ham’s or sunderland’s etc.? You and others criticise Ashley for not providing Pards with the wherewithal. I’m simply saying he did and that is the reason for my question. Its not hard. You shouldn’t be unable to answer it because you don’t care what other teams are like. What was our squad like compared to others at the start of the season in terms of where you rank it?

      (Quote)

  27. B+B no harm to you but my team is a very personal thing to me so I would never dream of saying I would swap my team for any other team, unless maybe Barca. So I really can’t understand how you can expect me to answer that, So the answer is NO but not because I think they’re better but because they’re my team.
As I touched on earlier how could I even say if our team were stronger than say Stoke when I really only know a handful of Stoke players 😕
And to think that you say it’s not hard to answer but still you can’t name me 1 manager out of all the top managers you say would walk over hot coals 😯 😆 it’s not hard you should be able to answer

      (Quote)

  28. Dave – I don’t know how you can criticise Ashley for not giving Pards the wherewithal if you don’t know the strength of other teams and what other club owners have managed to provide for their managers. It may be that Ashley has done very well in comparison and yet he gets criticised for not doing enough. The blame gets put at his door and not Pards’. It may be that Pards had one of the best squads in the league at the start of the season, and he has taken us to the brink of relegation. from what you’re saying you can’t comment. I know what you mean about not wanting to swap your team, but I am capable of thinking objectively and not subjectively, which is all it takes.

      (Quote)

  29. As for the managers question, I would dare to suggest that all but a handful of all managers in English and Scottish football would jump at the chance to manage our great club, and that’s just on these shores.

      (Quote)

  30. B+B well I wouldn’t swap my team for any other team, and as I said I can’t comment on the strength of any other team simply because I don’t know how strong they are 😉
But IMO our team at the start of this season wasn’t as strong as it needed to be with the extra games we had to play, we are still waiting yr’s for the CB we have needed maybe that doesn’t bother you but it does me. and it mightn’t bother you that Pards had to convince Jabba not to sell our best players in the summer, So if you think that ok and they are doing a good job well thats your opinion, but I won’t be agreeing with it

      (Quote)

  31. B+B meant to say IMO I don’t need to know about other teams strengths or what their owners are doing to form an opinion on what I expect OUR owner to do .

So @ 413 so which English and Scottish managers would you class as Top managers I can only think of a handful that I would class as Top and they’re probably the handful that you say are the exception 😆

      (Quote)

  32. Dave – Don’t you think we are competing against many other clubs whose fans would say we are weak here and could do with a better player here or there, or our squad is too small compared to Newcastle’s?

It would be interesting to know, if you picked your best XI, how many minutes of European football those players have actually played. It would also be interesting to know how many injuries we have suffered up to say mid November compared to other teams.

      (Quote)

  33. B+B what would be interesting to know is who these top managers are, as I have asked several times 😕 but I take it you can’t or won’t name any ❓

As for > or our squad is too small compared to Newcastle’s?
I don’t think there would be any of last yrs top 6 teams would be thinking that ❓

      (Quote)

  34. So what you’re saying is Pardew is the best manager NUFC can hope to get in the whole world. That’s some bold statement. If that’s the case, it’s no wonder the players want to be off. IMO, Lee Clark or Roberto Martinez couldn’t do any worse and that’s without thinking too hard. I can’t answer your query properly because I don’t know who is a realistic possibility at this time. I just think it is completely Anti-Ashley to blame the regime for not being able to attract anyone.

I agree about last year’s top finishers but you can’t just say the club must spend money it hasn’t got and it must spend it now. If it was that simple… That’s what kids say at Christmas when they’re not happy that they haven’t got what they put on their list.

      (Quote)

  35. Dave – Troy says there are plenty of good managers out there and it is only a question of whether they would be willing to commit career suicide. Why don’t you ask your big mate who the good managers are that he has in mind? 😉 We can then debate whether they would be prepared to commit carer suicide.

      (Quote)

  36. It seems no-one is interested to hear what my mate said about the select talk in with Pards and Llambias this week. 😥 Oh well, off to bed folks! 🙂

      (Quote)

  37. B+B so Clark and Martinez in your opinion are Top managers and they would both walk over goal for the Job, as I said I don’t think they’re any better than Pards so what would be the point ❓
I still can’t believe after all this time of you saying we could attract Top managers that they would be 2 of them why didn’t you just name them 2-3 days ago to save all this wasted energy in having to ask you to name one 😀

      (Quote)

  38. Dave – No, I did not say that those two are top managers. As a reminder “As for a replacement for Pardew, I leave those things to others. It’s amazing the good suggestions that people, who are more knowledgeable than me in these matters, come up with. I just happen to think there has got to be more and better options in the world.”

“IMO, Lee Clark or Roberto Martinez couldn’t do any worse.”

Your argument is Pards is the best manager we could hope to have. I find that so lame as to be pathetic. Its is simply Anti-Ashley for the sake of it. My argument is: surely that can’t be right? In the whole world? There are surely top managers in the whole world who would love to manage this club? Let’s take the list of the so-called top 50 managers and see who are possibilities. Have you done that exercise? Usually, HR consultants get paid a fortune for head hunting because it is a specialism that takes quite a lot of time and expertise.

Dave don’t hold your breath, unless you can do so indefinitely. 😛

It gets funnier every time I tune in to witness B&B
dodging the question. The best bit is, he’s mentioning names like Clark and Martinez but not committing himself. 😛

    @B&B

You say you don’t read every post. That explains an awful lot. 😯
I often wonder why you keep asking me the same questions over and over again when I’ve already answered . 😛 you then expect me to explain my views again and don’t understand why I don’t.
Do you really expect me to continuously reprint my views when I’ve already done it.
It’s for you to follow the debate.

No wonder you get lost off. 🙄

Regarding the sacking issue. which youve misunderstood. I accuse you of wanting him sacked. That was the impression you gave us all when debating with you. The post above, by you which is in response to me accusing you, does not challenge my accusations but in fact, supports my belief.

I lost the will to live when you stated after 24 hrs, you didn’t want him sacked now. Half a dozen of us had been debating with you for nothing. 🙄

You struggle because you don’t keep up. You have admitted to me on many occasions that your memory is fading. That is plain to see but all the more reason to read the posts and if you forget, reread them.

    It’s like arguing with a goldfish. 😳

Please don’t ask me again for my views on Ashley, which managers could replace Pardew, nor ask me to nail my colours to the mast and certainly not why I don’t sing Ashley out!

All have been answered and it gets tedious spoon feeding you. 😛

Have you thought of a manager yet? You want him sacked tomorrow, sorry resign. 😳

Roberto Martinez has a winning percentage of 27.78% during his time in charge at Wigan. Pardew’s United winning record stands at 38.64% currently.

Martinez Lost 8 in a row and were bottom of the league at Xmas last year before ending up 15th.

They have always finished in the bottom half since he took over, always in a relegation battle.

I seem to recall Super Steve Bruce getting them higher. 🙄

Lee Clark managed Huddersfield for many seasons and spent more than any manager in that league. He was sacked for not getting promotion. Their next manager got them promoted first time of asking. 🙄

Come on B&B, name one please. 😆 😆

    1 week and not a sausage. 😛

  42. Troy getting an answer of your Bro is a never ending story, he sugest 2 names buthey’re not the managers he would pick.
So why not answet thr question asked of him 100s of times who is his pick as he say’s there’s lots of them that would take the job 😕 so in the words of peter Jones i’m out

      (Quote)

  43. Troy – Who said this? “There’s hundreds of top managers out there …”

You say, “Do you really expect me to continuously reprint my views when I’ve already done it. It’s for you to follow the debate.” I ask that you do it only once to me in any debate with me. I reaally should get one of those silly disclaimers at the start of my posts. 😆 You want to portray that you follow every bloggers post all the time, and never miss one. 😳 The reason you won’t answer is obvious.

Troy @ 425 You miss my point. What is the point of comparing two managers win percentages. Its like comparing two racing car drivers win opercentages when they are driving different cars for different firms. To keep a club like Wigan up is a great achievement so your stats are stupid. That brings me back to my question that you will not answer. Where did you rank our squad at the start of the season compared to every other EPL team?

You say, “Lee Clark managed Huddersfield for many seasons and spent more than any manager in that league. He was sacked for not getting promotion. Their next manager got them promoted first time of asking.”

This from Wiki, “In his first season at the club he helped them to a ninth-placed finish in League One. They also only lost two home league games under Clark in the 2008–09 season. In his second season in charge Clark helped Huddersfield to secure a play-off spot and became the first manager to win three Manager of the Month award in a single season since Roberto Martinez in 2007–08.[8] Huddersfield were defeated by Millwall in the 2009-10 play-off semi-final.

In the 2010–11 season, Clark guided Huddersfield to a third-placed finish in the league, earning them a place in the play-offs after a club-record 25-game unbeaten run in the league. They reached the final after beating Bournemouth 4–2 on penalties, but lost 3–0 to Peterborough United in the Old Trafford final. In July 2011, he agreed a new rolling contract with the club.[9]

Clark continued breaking records at the beginning of the 2011–12 season, extending the unbeaten run in domestic regular-season league games to a Football League record 43 games.[10”

You say, “I accuse you of wanting him sacked. That was the impression you gave us all when debating with you.” You may have wrongly got that impression, but you cannot accept that your debate might have in any way led others to get that impression too. 🙄 When you went back and read what I said properly, you had to admit you couldn’t find any evidence of me calling for him to be sacked. 😳 Just admit it. It takes a big man, little fella! 😆

“Please don’t ask me again for my views on Ashley, which managers could replace Pardew, nor ask me to nail my colours to the mast and certainly not why I don’t sing Ashley out!” That’s because you realise that if you were to answer, your inconsistencies will be exposed. You can’t handle it when it hots up.

Your only and last straw tactic is to stick doggedly to trying get me to name names. You’ve even got your mate joining in. 😉 I’ve set out my position time and time again so why would I change my position because you keep wanting to force me. I would remind everyone that the person who suggested there are hundreds of top mannagers out there who NUFC could get if it weren’t for Ashley was one Troy Stavers 😳 So you name names, and I’ll comment on whether I think there is a realistic possibility that Ashley would put them off. 😀 You will avoid doing that at all costs though. 😆

  44. Dave @ 426 You should address the reasons I’ve given for not naming names and criticise me on that rather than tediously repeat the fact that I haven’t done so.

It is more incumbent on you and Troy to name the names of the hundreds of top managers out there who would come but for Ashley, or are you saying that we could never attract any top manager even if Ashley was gone? What are you saying? Don’t come out with that tripe of Troy’s that he’s stated his position hundreds of times and won’t repeat it. 😳 😆

You should come up with answers to my question about where you ranked our squad at the start of the season compared to the other EPL clubs, but you just want to avoid that. Your anti-ashley views affect your judgment I would suggest. 😉
