Is just one player going to be enough?

Remy speculation increases, but would he be enough?
Remy speculation increases, but would he be enough?
So I see Alan Pardew has been talking about transfers and has suggested we are “definitely” going to add one player to the squad.

It is unfortunately that time of year again. Mince Pies and transfer speculation as Christmas lurks around the corner, followed by a new year and then a new transfer window.

These days I hardly pay any notice to transfer speculation which some of you longer term readers may have cottoned on to. I used to get excited about them and show interest with every new player we were linked with by writing an article or two on each of them. Now though I just can’t be arsed with them as, aside from maybe one or two exceptions, the transfer window tends to end in disappointment and anger.

So the point of this article then? Well I guess to get to the point we have to look at what Alan Pardew has been saying first and foremost.

“It is a difficult window, but I think we would like to get – definitely – one player in and not lose anybody. It could be that we lose a player, you never know,” Pardew told the Chronicle.

“Obviously I lost Andy Carroll in this window and in a situation that wasn’t too dissimilar to what I’m in now two years ago, maybe it was a bit better. But if that is the case then we need two players, and if we lose two then we need three.”

He added: “Myself, Mike and Derek all agree that we should have brought one more senior player in here. For whatever reason it didn’t happen. And we have learnt from that lesson, and that’s what comes from the luxury which is the security of the owner. The owner has great faith in my ability and I have to reward that with what I think when we make an error, and say we have made a mistake.”

Well first off I guess it’s nice to see that they agree with the vast majority of fans who also thought it was a mistake not to strengthen further in the summer. It doesn’t change anything now though…

What can change though is January, and the fairly staunch promise that our numbers will be swelled by one regardless. Will it happen? Won’t it happen? I don’t know but I could probably make an educated guess!

The strongest train of speculation seems to suggest a move for Loic Remy could be on the cards. He’d be a good signing no doubt providing he can settle, but if we are assuming he is the one player then is it enough?

There are areas of our team which need strengthening and up front is one of them, but it’s the defence that I believe we should be looking to add to. Quite frankly it’s been shocking and the players who play at the back who have shall we say, limitations, are causing a lot of our problems.

Like Danny Simpson and Mike Williamson for example. I’ve said many times that I don’t think they are as bad as some make out and if you look at just defending then they are, at the very worst, decent players to have in the squad.

However a lot of this “long ball” thingybob that everyone seems to have latched on to has a lot to do with them pair. They just aren’t comfortable on the ball so the only two options you get from them whilst they have possession is a hopeful kick up field or a pass back to Tim Krul who will do much the same.

Anyway I’m in danger of having a rantso I’ll end it here…

Is adding just one player going to be enough? Is adding an attacker rather than a defender the right thing to do?

  1. Dave – I enjoy this blog coz you tend to get a wide spectrum of views, and Aussies good craic I think. I’m not entirely sure how ironic he’s being or whether he’s looking for a rise out of maybe Troy?!. I agree with him to a degree tho, some do only comment to run the club down and have little perspective or what has went on with the club in the last 2 years. Don’t get me wrong, we are having a stinker at the moment and have made mistakes in my opinion, but they have also done some good things too.
But I agree with you, the board themselves couldn’t possibly expect praise in the position we currently find ourselves in.

  2. JJ – far be it from me to tell you what to write mate, but in future you may want to consider just saying ‘we need 2 Centre Backs and a wide forward player’ 😉 😆 😆

  3. Sharpy to be honest I can’t think of one person on here that are only one sided and only able to run the Regime down, I would consider myself along with a couple of others on here that shall remain nameless 😆 the loudest against the Regime but I along with them have also praised them for last season and other things that they have got right.
I think the problem is that with the Regime for every good thing they do they make up for it with a clanger, and we seem to be always negative because they are always making a **** up of things.

    Dave

I will name myself in that small group who are critical of the regime.

In fact, I will take credit for originally labelling them, The Regime. 😉

Their history is full of **** ups, many of which could have been avoided with a simple touch of humility.

Communication and PR has been and still is abysmal, though better than a few year back.

They have got a lot of things right, particularly the financial side but I’ve always thought Shepherd and Ashley are polar opposites. Surely we need somewhere in between.

  6. SHARPY17 @144 On Tom Ince and Liverfool letting him go and now want too buy him back . Well their was this club that let a as then , little known young player go . After his release he was snapped up by a club on the south coast . A few years later his original club that let him go bought him back for a then transfer record ,the lad went on to be the top scorer in the premiership and his record still stands . Cant remember his name Alan something or other , think the club plays in Black and white like . 😀 As for Ince i would love us too get in ahead of Liverfool and sign him up .

  7. Troy – we need someone who has a smidgeon of knowledge about football. Personally I think Dekka is behind all of our problems apart from what happens on the pitch. That lies at AP’s feet. One in? Ho Ho Ho!

  8. 😉 Sharpy,

    Change the one to fullback.

I’d even settle for a wide forward player and a player who can play as both a fullback and centre back. Thats only two. Surely they can do that!

  9. Troy , congrats on coming up with the ‘regime’ title, you have done well mate..

Big Dave and Sharpy, I don’t like any excuse for a lack of effort or a poor performance on the park. Do really think it is the ‘regimes’ fault that we have put in **** efforts like the game against Swansea?
Sure we need strengthening but once a player pulls on the shirt, the excuses stop and its time to give it your all. Our players have been guilty of some half arsed efforts. For the record I believe we need fresh players purely to give the team a fresh injection of spirit and enthusiasm.

    @Aussie

Those same players may be as disillusioned as us. They came to NUFC, no doubt, on the back of promises about competing for Europe.

They pull their pluck out and achieve great things. They, like us, no doubt, expected the regime to fulfil those promises and for them to strengthen the squad.

Bang! They didn’t. We get to Europe which means extra games and the same set of players are meant to achieve the same results.

The players will be as dismayed with the regime as we are. Well not you. 😉

  17. Aussie – I agree with you mate. There are a number of factors that contribute to our current plight, and player form would without doubt be one of those. I also think tactics, team selection and coaching are all contributory factors. But the fact that we only have 3 CBs, a right footed LB, no natural right winger and no real back up to Ba and Cisse (A goal scorer, not Shola) is just criminal for me mate. Those players who played so poorly against Swansea had no fear of being dropped because our squad isn’t big enough or strong enough. What worries me most is that I not think it is just one area that needs addressing and because of this our problems won’t disappear in Jan, even if the board do the unexpected and put a substantial amount of money in.
I hear what Troy is saying, but these are professional footballers and I would have expected them to have picked their lips up after the first or second game, as it really doesn’t get them anywhere staying in a huff.
I hear you that you are agreeing the team needs strengthening so fair play. 😉

On a different note, there were certainly more difficult teams to have drawn than Metalist, so I can live with that. We may also have our very own Ukranian by then as well if we get Artem.

      (Quote)

  18. Spot on Sharpy @174. We have a very weak squad in actual fact. That is why there is no competition for places. And even where we should see competition as with Jonas v Marveaux it doesn’t happen. We’ve played poorly so far and the noise Ba is making suggests he is ready for the off. Anyone we are likely to get in to replace him will be an unknown factor in the Prem. Another uncertainty we don’t need right now. On the bright side we have Llambias to pull us out of the fire in January. 👿 I’m sure we’re all ecstatic about that.

  25. Big D, I have a feeling that maybe come the end of the January transfer window Ba will be in the same position. He’ll still have the clause in his contract, and no-one will be daft enough to pay the zillions of pounds to him and his cronies to take Ba off our hands.

Maybe Ashley is playing it right by playing hard ball, and gambling that no-one will pay the readies to take him off our hands ?

  29. Icedog @ 176. Yes it’s definitely not injuries in some cases such as the drop in play of Jonas. Even though Obertan is injured I would think we could see he wasn’t up to Prem standards a while back. Of course a lot of us said that about Routledge as well but now he is playing well for Swansea. Could it be our coaching is a problem also? He looks a lot more comfortable in the Swansea setup. And what is causing the drop in form of the younger lads in the reserves, U21, and academy sides? I thought Ashley was going to improve us by a huge amount there. All in all this has been just a terrible season. What comes next, a turnabout or a continued slide down? I think it is very much up in the air mate. 😥

      (Quote)

  30. MM but if he’s still here come the end of the Jan window, well then we have all this **** to look forward to again every window that he’s here, and why will he be here ??? because no other team will take the chance on him, is that the type of players we want.
I also noticed which I said the other day that fuk all will be done about his interview when the papers were saying that he will be fined 2 weeks wages because he hadn’t got permission for the Canal interview,

” There will be no disciplinary process against him; his interview in France was not translated correctly. I’ve got no problem with anything he said.”

Well I have seen the translation and have heard from ones that are French speakers and from what they reckon there was no misinterpretation , so is this just more bowing down to keep him happy, because i’m fuking sick of the whole Ba circus 😈

  31. MM-It’s a tough life that’s for sure. Maybe Dortmund have some secret weapon to keep their boys at the top of their game. Elevensies? Afternoon naps? Playstation time when they finish their drills? We must learn their ways…. 😀

As for Simmo, unfortunately you have to possess such “bling” in order to climb the social ladder and in turn climb into the beds of the iconic musicians of this age…

  32. Big Dave don’t worry mate I’m sure Dekka has a cunning plan to handle all of this. I can hardly wait to hear what it is. 😆

      (Quote)

  33. Big Dave please not another 5 year plan. I don’t think any of us could survive it! And I hate to think what his idea of a purple might be now. Hearing rumours on another site that Ben Arfa wants to leave in the summer to a top 5 club (I mean a real top 5 club with competent management). I think the way the club handled their success last season (or didn’t handle it) has made a lot of our better players fairly anxious to leave. Ash/Llam just weren’t prepared for success! They had no intention to spend last summer and didn’t think they would have to. When we finished fifth Llambias just couldn’t adjust his thinking when dealing with other clubs. The idea that we might influence other clubs in terms of their player valuations just didn’t occur to him and he bailed on negotiations in a panic when they didn’t go the way he wanted. Pathetic really.

      (Quote)

  34. GEORDIETWO the Regimes lack of ambition isn’t a very good advert to our own players or potential players, I have said that our best players will think whats the point of us giving our all when the Regime don’t do owt to help them, but infact they expect them to do the same only with fewer players and more games, they are a total fuking joke, and the biggest joke was that there was other supporters of our club that said I was talking **** and that they wouldn’t see it like that 😕

      (Quote)

  35. Big D, I think we just have to be prepared for the Demba Ba circus every transfer window to be honest. The more I think about it, the more I think Ashley may be playing it right, no one will come in with the big sponddolicks to lure him away from the toon, and he’s still good for 20 goals a season, even if he has a serious lip on 🙂

Newkie…now Dortmund, now you’re starting to talk sense 😉

Jurgen Klopp has a bunch of young lads who run like crazy the full game, and are not lacking a bit of skill either mate 😉 Plus the players love the bloke, he’s a great motivator.

Who are the iconic musicians from your age Newkie ?…. I always had a bit of a longing for Bananarama in my sprogdom.

Maybe that’s why I ike Dortmund so much 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  36. Munich Mag spot on about Dortmund. A tremendous team. Big Dave I have to agree the management attitude is seeping down into the dressing room. The players know there is little respect from above. What other team talks about purples as if they are moving pieces in a board game? I won’t take any more of Pardew’s statements seriously until he shows he can turn the club around. Right now I just don’t see it happening. Too much talk from Pardew, most of it isn’t going to lift the supporters or the players at all. Less talk and more action on the pitch. Have the team watch a couple of Dortmund games.

      (Quote)

  37. Geordietwo..we shouldn’t be at all surprised that our big hitters are thinking about jumping ship to be honest. Even more so now that we seem to be struggling so badly.

The Frenchies in general have never been short of self-confidence, and Ba, Ben Arfa and Cabaye all know that they are top pros who would fit in at any of the top european clubs. If they are looking at NUFC and wondering what is going on, then no-one can blame them. We all feared that a failure to maintain the momentum from last season would cause the big hitters to look elsewhere, and our lack of intent in the transfer market only reinforces that. I recall Cabaye came out and said as much in the local press prior to his injury:

Cabaye will probably only get 11 or 12 more league games under his belt this season anyway. It’s interesting that Pardew may be heaping so much expectation onto him, we need more than him to start dragging us up the table.

Simmo will walk for nowt in the summer, so we’ll be short on a few positions next season. We could do with overhauling the complete back four 🙂

      (Quote)

  38. Geordietwo, Dortmund hunt in packs, at a high-octane tempo, that’s what I love about watching them. I’ll never forget the battering that they gave Man City in the UK earlier on this year, if it hadn’t of been for Hart they would have lost 1-5. Where does that leave us after the absolute battering City gave us for 30 minutes at the weekend 🙁
All of the German teams are confident on the ball, and don’t give it away cheaply. Wor lot have a lot to learn about retaining posession. We also need to train more at making the killer pass. We are too unconcentrated and lacklustre with our delivery in the final third.

      (Quote)

  39. Spot on with all your comments Munich mag. Watching Dortmund when they don’t have the ball is a real eye opener. They remind me of Barcelona with their pursuit of the ball. They rarely go more than 10 or 15 seconds without regaining it. Our work rate looks pathetic by comparison. No pressure on the ball up front most of the time and very few turnovers in the oppositions half. Meanwhile we give the ball away about half of the time in our own half with poor short and long passes. What is the answer? Surely Pardew can see it. Anyone who will work their tail off should be given a chance to turn us around. I would go with the younger players like Vuckic if they were healthy. Forget about bringing Shola on. We just resort to long ball even more often. Very frustrating to watch this season.

      (Quote)

  40. IMO our biggest problem is we are overloaded with Midfielders and most of them are injured or not performing Gosling , Cabaye ,HBA , RTaylor ,Vukic and Obertan injured Marveaux and Jonas not performing and Abied and Amalifanto or however you spell his name just vanished into thin air . The more i look at our squad the more i am thinking Ash , LLamearse and even Pardew have not got a effing clue .Seriously how many other clubs have so many midfielders and are so short in both defenders and Strikers . I think i am starting to getting depressed , if we lose on saturday then i think we are truly up **** creek . hope i am wrong .

    Its very worrying.

  43. I dont care what the happy clappers say, in the PL you have to constantly keep investing in new players.
Maybe not on the grand scale of Chelsea, manc shitty etc. obviously we dont have those resources.
The board have to understand, that to standstill is to go backwards.
Every player needs to be competing for his place with another of equal ability. Its the only way to keep improving and to avoid complacency.
The players also need to feel valued and that the club has some kind of ambition to win things. Otherwise what is the point.
The board – who clearly dont have the faintest clue of football – have let the players down, let the fans down and let themselves down.
You cant run a PL team on a shoestring and hope to be sucessful.
I believe the players feel they have been duped into coming here, and that has been evident in their lacklustre performances so far.
I cant really say as I blame them either.
I also feel we, the fans have been duped, especially those of us who signed up to the 10 yr season tkt offer.
Pardew has lost all credibilty imo. Dead man walking.
I think we will beat qpr on saturday. The players will get us through it. But not by any input from the clueless one.
We could well see a mass exodus by the end of the season.
    Its a disgrace 👿 .

And I’d say the reason newspapers get away with writing **** is because people keep reading them. Treat newspapers like blogs and there’s no problem. There’s nothing to say that newspapers have to write the truth or to inform people; they exist to make money for their stakeholders and to advertise products.

Are you really suggesting that players don’t subtlety give less than 100% when they are miffed?

No one is saying its justified. It is an utter disgrace if they aren’t giving their all. They are paid handsomely by the club, via the fans.

But you can never hide facts. They will be dismayed as all of us with the lack of activity in the summer. Whether it be consciously or subconsciously, I dare bet they aren’t giving what they gave last season.

I am not condoning any player who does not give their all but this all derives from the lack of activity by the Regime letting everyone down.

  56. Aussie,

Sorry mate, I can’t believe you can’t see that players will become disinterested if they see a lack of overall ambition.

It may not be right but its how the world works.

I myself began to get very slack at work a couple years ago because I saw opportunities for growth but simply wasn’t being supported by those above me.

I eventually began to think. “Why bother trying my best?” I get paid the same no matter what effort I put in and this companies ambitions simply doesn’t meet my own. I like the people. Job security is good. It pays the bills, but my drive and fire to be the best and make something better of where I work was dimishing by the day. I simply did the job.

I spoke about it with fellow employees who all agreed and they began to adopt the same attitude.

Eventually I got called in for a meeting because my “negative” influence was too great on those around me. I stood up to the bosses. Told them that it wasn’t my attitude which needed adjusting but theirs. I gave them my suggestions. Told them I would up my game if they backed my ambitions and since then they have supported me with marketing concepts, better camera equipment etc.

I am happier. They are happier. The papers look appealing, the articles are more interesting. The website is more user friendly.

It wasn’t about my own financial gain. I just wanted the companies ambitions to match my own. Once they did, my performance massively improved.

Now, as a footballer, you are an employee of a company (club) and I would imagine if you have big ambitions, and you work hard and succeed.

Then look to move to the next level. But your bosses can’t be bothered to match those ambitions then I can say without any doubt your performance levels would drop and your head would turn in the direction of alternative employment.

That negative wibe would spread like a virus from the players to coaching staff to the supporters. Until it reached the board. Who then have a decision to make… Either adjust your attitude to regain the support of the work force or continue to be arrogant and stubborn and let the company rot from within.

  58. Aussie as Troy has allready stated and put you straight we are not stating that it’s all down to lack of investment, but as the players are only human I strongly believe that it has a part to play. So try getting your facts straight, before throwing your toys about . 😉

As for the bullshit remark , if we state something that we believe it’s our opinion, if you say that bullshit well then there is no difference your still saying what we believe ( our opinion ) is bullshit

  59. JJ, it all comes back to the ‘regime’ in the end doesn’t it, funny that. If 50 thousand screaming fans can’t lift you out of a sulk then **** off and play for some team that has been active in the market like QPR and Sunderland.

  60. Aussie,

I think you will find the way things are going its more like 5000 screaming fans and 40 000 anxious groans followed by 15 000 vacant seats ten minutes before then end and 10000 boos after the whistle.

That in itself doesn’t exactly fill players with confidence.
