Newcastle v Everton – Premier League match preview

Newcastle v Everton
Newcastle v Everton
Only Newcastle can score a combined total of six goals at Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium and come away with no points.

After months of looking limp in attack and struggling to create chances, suddenly we look capable of scoring against any side and at any ground and we’ve played some decent football to boot.

Unfortunately decent football doesn’t guarantee three points (although in the eyes of some fans it does!) and it’s been the simple things that have ultimately cost us. Defensively we’ve been poor, there is no other way to describe shipping 11 goals in two games, and all of our back five – from Coloccini to Krul – have to take some portion of the blame for that. Improvement is needed, but will we improve enough to beat an Everton team who have been on fire (not literally) all season tomorrow evening at St James’ Park?

Newcastle:

Mathieu Debuchy is expected to complete a move to Newcastle in the next week or so, which is no good for this game as we need somebody to fill in for Danny Simpson who broke a toe against Arsenal but I thought I’d let you know…

Also missing are Hatem Ben Arfa, Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling, Jonas Gutierrez Haris Vuckic, Steven Taylor and Yohan Cabaye although the latter two of that list are back in training and could return for our next Premier League game at Norwich in just under a fortnight. Vurnon Anita could also be available for selection after sitting out the defeat at Arsenal.

Everton:

Marouane Fellaini will return to the side after serving a three-match suspension and Phil Neville could also return to action. However David Moyes will be without Darron Gibson, Kevin Mirallas, Tony Hibbert and Seamus Coleman for the trip to Tyneside.

Previously:

Earlier on in the season we somehow managed to draw 2-2 at Goodison Park, thanks to two goals from Demba Ba who came off the bench to drag his side level before causing a stir with his post-match comments.

Overall results have been split equally between the two sides. In total there has been 163 meetings in all competitions between United and Everton over the years with each side winning on 64 occasions. The remaining 35 games have ended in draws.

Stats and facts:

Newcastle became the first side in Premier League history to lose back-to-back matches in which they’ve scored three goals in. A dubious honour indeed…

Demba Ba has scored more goals away from home than at home (19 v 17) during his time so far in England.

The home side has lost this fixture just twice in the last 20 meetings between the teams.

Everton have conceded in their last 15 Premier League games.

Final thought:

A win for Newcastle needs to be looked for if we are to start building a bit of a cushion between ourselves and those below us. It’s not going to be an easy game and you know what Everton will give when they come to your ground so get three points you need to deserve them by putting the effort in.

We can get a result, it is possible, but we’ll need to be at our best to do it.

Howay the lads!

  1. Thanks for the preview, Toonsy. Glad to see you’re feeling better.

Perch to fill in at RB, surely?

  2. Krul
    Perch, willo, Colo, Santon,
    Tiote, Bigi, Anita, Marveaux
    Cisse, Ba

We badly need 3 points and will need to be at our best to get anything. Everton will be every bit as tough as Man U and Arsenal even though its at home. I think we will get a draw.

  3. Toonsy ,Good preview ,glad you are feeling better and welcome to the wonderful world of having kids at xmas time, you will find all manner of illness crops up now, the little immune systems bring home all sorts ,wait till he starts nursery 😉

IF we play in attack the way we did v Manure and Arsenal we could get the win but we MUST defend as a unit .We have been shocking in defence and the whole team need to defend until we can strengthen. We had an amazing 55% possession at the Emirates almost unheard of and such a pity we ran out of legs. The Manure game killed us they were fresher quite simply and Walcott was on fire.

**** Villa 2.1 up now 👿 ,Right we defo MUST win now then as I ain’t having them t*@*s getting a point more than us ,that’s just humiliating. 👿

      (Quote)

  4. Maybe he will move Santon over and play Ferguson at Lb but my guess is if fit Anita to replace Simpson and Williamson back in as the only 2 changes

  5. “West Ham look like they’re happy to defend their lead now. One bank of four and then another bank of five are sitting deep and defending the box, with just Cole remaining in an advanced position. They’re operating on the counter now.”….

West Ham at home…..read it and learn Alan Pardew…..

  6. Kim I watched the whole game and Villa had one chance in the first half and equalised after Swansea had hit the post twice and Routledge had gone clean through to hit the keeper. In the second half Villa had a penalty and scored. I’m so pleased Swansea equalised in the last minute because no way did Villa deserve 3 points. They are like a team of kids and reserves now Villa. They are so lucky though in games, I can’t see them going down. 🙁 We need to beat them this time at their place.

  7. Welcome back Toonsy – Happy New Year to you mate and all on this site.

Yeah, the way results have gone/going for us today we HAVE to win tomorrow I think.
Another injury at Arsenal to Danny Simpson this time is just Sod’s law really. Particularly as it will be the most vulnerable position tomorrow with Baines and Pinear likely to target the RB area.

I know it’s maybe a negative after 4-3-3 has produced goals, but personally I’d line up:

    —————- Krul ————–
    Perch – Willo – Colo – Santon
    Obertan – Anita – Tiote – Marv
    ———— Cisse — Ba ———–

I think Oba and Marv will still give us width and can pick Ba and Cisse out with Anita also threading balls through for the attackers. But I also think that Obas pace and tracking back will help Perchino out abit as he’s a good tackler but may struggle to catch Baines.

      (Quote)

  8. DJG we will beat them at their place too me they look like a team going down . Their is something wrong with Bent their as well , i know he is injured but when fit he never gets picked ,i think the first decent offer and he will be off and Nzogbia and Ireland are hardly helping them either .Those 3 players are the sort you would think could get them out of trouble .

      (Quote)

  9. Who’s going to pick up Fellaini? He really should be man-marked, which isn’t Tiote’s speciality. Could play Perch-Willo as the defensive partnership and park Colo on top of the Belgian, though Pardew isn’t normally so reactive.

  10. Toonsy – great stuff
Nice to see someone actually mentioning that while 11 goals against is pretty ****, you have to admit that 6 for is a step in the right direction.
It’s almost as if we have creativity in the team.
Apart from Anita settling in and doing well Marveaux looks like he could be a handy player to have on the field. Remember when Barfa arrived and was a bit hit an miss for a while?……
Santon on the right and Fergie on the left would make a canny game.
Just hope we dont go for the Ameobi Emergency Backup plan.
I think he’s scored his goals for this season
It’s a midnight kick off here so better make sure there’s enough ice in the freezer

      (Quote)

  11. I think Pards may well put Anita at RB to cover for Simmo as he’s played him there previously. Though it’s not his best position for us he did o.k the couple of times asked to play there, anyone else reckon he may play RB?.

      (Quote)

  12. Lallana is out “injured” again. We know Pardew is an admirer. Would you take him if Remy fell through? Different kind of left winger. He likes to cut in and shoot/slip through balls in. Would really compliment Cisse in my opinion.

      (Quote)

  13. Kim, it’s complicated. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/20844286

Reading between the lines, I think Shola will be allowed to go if Ba signs a new contract or is replaced promptly. Certainly this is what should happen. It would be shameful for the club to prevent a loyal servant from playing in an international tournament just because we (apparently) can.

      (Quote)

  14. Think its important we pick up some points tomorrow. A draw be a good result against a good everton side. We do need to start winning and if we can shore up our defense and keep playing the way we are playing going forward we will win games.

      (Quote)

  15. Wellington – colo isn’t much of a man marker either to be fair like. Don’t think you can man marker Fellaini, just pick up 2nd balls. It’s Baines and Pinear we need to stop as they will be getting it into the box for Fell and Jelly to do their damage.
We have to play our own game as well though and not just think of how to stop them coz we are leaking goals at the mo so can’t focus solely on defending IMO.

Re Ba – I’m sorry like, but Chairmen aren’t gonna pay higher wages just to support a players whole family or village!!. He goes to Chelsea and gets £2.5m immediately from the deal, then signs a contract for say £80k pw – I reckon that would go along way to supporting my family like.
What he could do though is ask his agent to donate some of his fee to supporting the community as well though – I doubt it though.
These fucking footballers are full of **** and we buy it!!. Is Ba living in a £100k semi detached in Byker like and driving a second hand mondeo?
I bet it’s not about the fast cars and mansions!!

      (Quote)

  16. Kim yeah I agree with that. To be honest Anita could get to grips with Baines a bit where as Simpson just tends to back off. Perch is definitely better in midfield. Plus Williamson is back. These 6 goals in 2 games have a lot to do with Obertan and Marveaux playing IMO, they practically set-up most of them.

    ——————-Krul——————–
    Anita——Willo—–Collo——Santon
    ———–Perch——Tiote————–
    —-Marv———————–Obertan-
    ————-Ba?—-Cisse—————

      (Quote)

  17. yeah Kim I also think we will go 4-3-3 and Anita will slot back in at RB.
But I also think Obertan will play LM
    Perch RM Tiote CM
Marv in the hole between the 2 Demba’s.
We wont keep a clean sheet imo so we MUST score more than them.
I really think we can do it aswell.
A win will be a great statement from the Lads.
    Keep the Faith.
    😛 😛

  18. Opinions on Perch and Bigi in midfield and Tiote dropped to the bench ?

    ——————————Krul—————————————
    Anita ———-Willo————-collo—————-Santon
    —————Perch——————–Bigi————————–
    —————————-Marveaux——————————–
    Cisse————————-Ba————————Obertan

  19. Was it Ba that was given the pimped silver pushbike last year for Christmas?

Maybe he was speeding on that

      (Quote)

  20. Axel, my thought is that Anita may not be fit to start. We could play Fergie instead and switch Santon over.

Also, I doubt Pardew will bench Tiote.

      (Quote)

  21. DJG , I like that line up, Perch and Tiote should give real bite and protect our back four so long as Tiote don’t give the ball away like he has been or get a rush of blood to the head .Anita has the pace to get back and controls the ball better than Simmo and can spray it about good to boot.

Axel @28 That’s not bad like apart from Cisse out wide .

I don’t think we should man mark Fellini but rather nullify the supply to him and With Obertoon and Marv we have the pace to stop that supply ,well on paper anyway.

Wellington@21 ,I agree he should be allowed to go if he wants to .Anyway I thought there was a FIFA directive that says if you stop a player going when not injured they can stop said player playing for the duration of the tournament.

      (Quote)

  22. Well I hope Anita is fit to start as imo we really missed him on saturday. Can’t wait for Benny and Cabs to get back too. I bet Cabs is chomping at the bit to link up with Debbie again ,if he comes that is 😉 We may well see a revitalised player you never know 😉 POSITVE THOUGHTS ,POSITIVE THOUGHTS , just my NY resolution kicking in guys . 😀

      (Quote)

  23. Good to have you back Toonsy. Pity we can’t play Jonas @ RB. If we are playing 2 DMs then Perch & Tiote with Anita at RB makes sense to me.

      (Quote)

  24. Dont believe Arsenal couldn’t score against southampton. Got lucky tho with an OG.
That puts us 2 points clear from the bottom three.
We sooooo need a win tomorrow.
Something positive to get us going for the rest of the season.

  25. We have had a day longer to rest than Everton.

If we win – will Pardew claim it was due to fatigue from Everton? If we lose, will he complain about our tiredness again?

He’s full of **** most of the time, so I look forward to his post-match interview more than this game.

      (Quote)

  26. Wellington – sorry for the delay mate, aye Darras Hall ain’t cheap and I bet he’s not on the buses and metro during his ban 😆
I have no problem with these players wanting to help poor relatives and communities – I’m in favour of it actually. But making demands when your wanting £80k a week takes the **** abit like.
Make it an incentive – Ba scores 20 goals, Ashley pays for a new hospital wing or school building or village doctors surgery or something like that.
Why should Ashley just hand the cash over as part of his wages for him then to be injured/suspended or off at the ACoN or playing *****?!.
Like I say, if these players weren’t sitting on a fortune in their own banks it wouldn’t be as bad.

Re the match – I think we all agreed who the starting 11 should be, it will just be interesting to see how we set up.

      (Quote)

  27. I look forward to Ba’s advisors /agents /middlemen all donating a chunk of their slice of coin to the poor of Senegal 😉

      (Quote)

  28. We don’t need a win tomorrow. A draw will suffice. We need to stop the rot and build once we get our players back.

    2-2 draw tomorrow I reckon.

      (Quote)

  29. The Demba Ba “helping people in Senegal” story is just pap. He is a greedy fellow and we knew this when we signed him. Remember, he could have gone to Everton, but we offered more dosh? How have people forgotten this glaring fact?!

He is greedy, but loads of players are, so I don’t hold it against him. However, he won’t get what he wants here so kindly do one and fast. Cheers.

      (Quote)

  30. The Kid @ 39, I would settle for that. We need to build, and stop losing games.

I hope Pardew doesn’t blow it with some crazy tactic chasing the game, because we cannot defend for **** at the moment 🙁

      (Quote)

  31. Munich

It’s a tough one because Everton are a side that you have to impose yourself on if you are to get anything. Look at their game against Chelsea where they dominated Rafa’s lot for a good 30mins before Chelsea stepped it up and gear and forced them back into their own half. We need to hit the ground running and start the game at a high tempo.

      (Quote)

  32. The Kid, we need to have the nads to take the game to them, but cut out the individual mistakes which have cost us so dearly all season.

It sems as if Everton may also have a problem lasting the full 90 minutes at high tempo. I read they battered Chelsea without getting the goals.

I would absolutely love it if Ba scored a hat trick tomorrow 😉

      (Quote)

  33. “It sems as if Everton may also have a problem lasting the full 90 minutes at high tempo. I read they battered Chelsea without getting the goals.”

Yep. For a good 30mins they had Chelsea pinned in their own half. It was relentless, and that’s against a solid side like Chelsea. We can’t afford for that to happen, or the game could be over early.

As for Ba, I can certainly see him getting on the score sheet tomorrow (if he plays).

      (Quote)

  34. The Kid…we are at home tomorrow, so hopefully we can hold Everton at bay. The problem is that even if we get a goal ahead no-one expects out defence to hold out 🙁

I would like us to hold a clean sheet tomorrow too. It has to happen one day 😳 That would have us all starting to believe.

we will have a c/b this window no worrys

thats a bold statement Icedog. Are you really that confident ?
Do you fancy putting a name to that too 😕

      (Quote)

  36. If we can get a goal first then I would be inclined to park the bus unless we are really dominating the game. It was a bloody hard game at their place and they look much pacier than us when I watched them V Chelsea the other day. Chelsea were rocking for the first half hour or so ,so we better have our wits about us moreover what’s required tommorow is really hard graft and maximum concentration at the back.

      (Quote)

  37. Surely Ba has to start tomorrow. How can we NOT play our top goal scorer in a match of this magnitude. ❓
No he must start and we must score early.

      (Quote)

  38. Kim
Cus Newcastle ‘parking the bus’ has worked so well in the past. We just invite pressure that we can’t handle. IMO the key to the win will be to constantly attack, as long as our back line stays together and communicates with one another we should get the three points. Easier said than done though.

      (Quote)

  39. Andy , Exactly but that’s the problem they don’t stay together. If we defend as a whole team to help them out in the short term we’ll be o.k . The forwards Midfielders the whole shabang to get back then see if they can break us down,it works for other teams .It ain’t pretty but it can be **** effective .

  40. Happy new year everyone, hope it will be a good one for you and yours.
Not been on here commenting for a while but enjoyed following from a distance.
It’s gonna be a hard game tomorrow and not looking forward to it being played out on national TV… Hope the lads have recovered mentally from the 10 goal ‘thriller’ and Pardew manages to keep his nerve with the pressure building.

So according to the Chronicle we’ve finally signed Debuchy. Good early start in the transfer market.
    Much needed.

      (Quote)

  42. Thanks Kim. Sadly I can’t see us getting anything against Everton, but i remain eternally optimistic, or I will be after a few drinks!

      (Quote)

  43. Good news indeed Troy re Debuchy. Hope it will also keep Cabaye happy with his best mucker joining him. Let’s see who else the not so fat controller is willing to splash out on. Fingers crossed we get a couple more through the door.

      (Quote)

  44. GDEB@57 😆 Fair play, I have resolved this year to have positive thoughts ,therefore I am saying a draw. 😉

      (Quote)

  45. BB@49 – I think it’s pretty obvious what Ice meant – nobody will take Williamson off our hands! 😉

Yeah, winning scruffily will suit me now, once PL safety is secured we can play ‘champagne football’.

  47. Remy Turns To Toon – Not Rangers!
QPR manager Harry Redknapp says he is unsure whether the club will be able to convince striker Loic Remy to join them from Marseille.

Leaving the way clear for Newcastle to step up their pursuit for the 25-year-old France international.

And Redknapp admits it could be difficult to persuade Remy to move to Loftus Road given Rangers’ position at the bottom of the table.

“He’s a top player but I don’t know whether we could get him to QPR,” said Redknapp.

      (Quote)

  48. yeah its from Necastle united mad.
Its a follow up to the “qpr offer £9M for Remy” article they did.
Anyhow, he would be a total mug to go there surely

  49. Really bugs me how old slack face always goes for the same players we want, usually with the added draw of “London” on his side.
    He’s a proper sneaky ****. 👿
