Game On! Newcastle v Everton

Game On at a floodlit SJP
Game On at a floodlit SJP
Newcastle kick-off 2013 with a home game against Everton this evening as Alan Pardew and David Moyes go toe-to-toe once more.

Recent matches between the two sides have been soured due to comments made by Alan Pardew, comments which weren’t exactly well received on the blue half of Merseyside.

However this time around it would appear that the wounds have started to heal as neither manager have brought it up in the pre-match build up. Instead the run up to the match has been dominated with transfer gossip and whilst it looks like Demba Ba will be away and Mathieu Debuchy should be arriving at Newcastle, Moyes has already had to concede that he has little cash to spend and is looking for loan deals only. Hardly the most satisfying news to hear when you are chasing European football. We know how it feels…

Onto matters tonight and three points are at stake once more, three points that both sides need for their own reasons. Everton will want to keep the pressure on the top four by gaining all three points whilst Newcastle want the three points to ensure they can start to make a bit of a gap between themselves and those at the bottom of the table.

The match preview is online already and can be viewed by clicking here. It features injury news for both sides plus some stats and facts and a look at the history of meetings between the two sides. One thing it doesn’t cover is the news about Demba Ba and his permission to speak to Chelsea meaning that he won’t be involved this evening.

The game itself is on Sky which is fine for me as I’m not at the game tonight and have Sky, but for those who don’t have Sky then a stream will be needed. Once again normal rules apply and if you find a good one please share it by leaving a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Which just about wraps it up. Will United come unstuck against the Toffees? Or will it be the Magpies flying away with three points this evening. We’ll soon find out…

Howay the lads!

  1. Outclassed.

Twatful defending there. Three defenders there was no need to foul Fellini there.

We are way too brittle, and Cisse is our great hope up front. Yeah right.

  2. MM ,don’t worry once Cisse gets back in the middle and defenders come in we’ll be fine .Don’t forget he did score tonight and we’ll never know if Ba would of done any better ,we been close a few times but no luck and a **** ref too. It’s our defence not the attack which is weak anyone can see that .

  3. Toonsy@240, it’s not luck, we are too slow. When we get the ball we make the wrong decisions. Too little class.

  4. MM , Now your taking the **** mate , he scored ffs and whilst out right again ,I didn’t see anyone else scoring did you.

  5. Such poor spirit at the end, yeah we’re 2-1 down, just leave them to run through us and put no pressure on them when they have the ball. Strange subs as well, Obertan wasn’t tiring, he was shredding them.

      (Quote)

  6. MM – say what? Even without being specifically prepared for it, Shola & Cisse complemented each other. They’d do better as a front two, mind.

      (Quote)

  7. Agree Newkie. Strange subs. I think Pardew was nervous about taking too much experience off. In the end though, the ref made the difference. Too many 50:50 decisions not going our way.

  8. Just seen replay of the second goal. What was Williamso doi way out wide on the halfway line. Know your limitations man

  9. We need a striker that can sit back and knock the ball on, Cisse will thrive then. Also need a genuine threat from the wing.

    4-2-3-1

    Krul

    Debuchy ???????????? Colo Santon

    Cabaye Tiote/Anita

    ???????????? ????????? Benny

    Cisse

    Bench:

    Elliott
    Saylor
    Raylor
    Tiote/Anita
    Marveaux
    Obertan
    Strolla

Sorted. Come on Dekka, get those signings in or we are in real danger of going down.

  10. Kimtoon, no we only scored 1, and Cisse scored it. But Cisse never gets close to Shola, in fact he didn’t get close to Ba either.

I thought Cisse did nowt apart from his goal, and wasn’t anywhere near the half chances breaking around the box.

We huffed and puffed until the final third where we met a strong defence, across the complete back four. Everton sliced through us at will on the break.

  11. Griff spot on ,as good as Everton are they fall down like they been shot and atkinson is a grade A **** who has something against us that much is evident ,like previously mentioned he thought de jongs hack on Benny was fine 😯 yet blows for the slightest tap by us ,go figure.

  12. FSOTC to be fair we only had two purple defenders playing tonight, IMO Willo isn’t prem quality and Perch isn’t either with Debuchy in and another proper CB well be a helluva a lot stronger.
As at the min the defence is letting us down the most, along with Tiote but we don’t need to worry about him for a while

  13. Another game where we shouldn’t have lost, but when you have a lightweight midfield that runs out of pace, and a weak defense which falls asleep at
critical moments then you’ll be in trouble.

      (Quote)

  14. Agree with those that think that Everton did well (that and milk the ref).

Defence is certainly a problem. Simpson is decent and Perch is not a FB. Tiote isn’t covering like he used to and Williamson is weak. Colo is alright. I think everyone knows what I think about Santon. Has promise but isn’t a great FB either.

    But we should scrape through.

  15. Fans – they’re tired due to a lack of rotation. January’s schedule is forgiving and players will be back at the end of the month.

Shamrock – it’s not as bad as that, mate. Marv & Obertan are adequate to the task. Sulejmani (who we’ve been linked to) can play across that attacking band of 3.

  16. We have to win another 7 games for 41points, 7 out of the next 18 ,can we do it?. That’s assuming 41 would be enough like

      (Quote)

  17. Well news on Douglas is Twente will sell and its between us and Inter Milan or Reading . Got a feeling he will choose Inter .

      (Quote)

  18. So what have we got to look forward to next, getting knocked out of the Cup at Brighton for the second time in a row. Not good enough this like. We need to get 10 points from this run of games in Jan-Feb. Well so far thats 0 from a very winnable game, how did they manage to f it up this time from 1-0?

      (Quote)

  19. It’s very disappointing because they were poor goals we conceded. First one is not a freekick and then the wall isn’t organized. Second one is woeful.

I thought we played ok in some patches but once behind we lost all shape and composure trying to chase the game. Sometimes we need calm heads and when you’re throwing on Ranger and Sammyeobi you don’t get that.

Finally we should have had a pen which changes the game. We need a win at the weekend to lift morale.

      (Quote)

  20. Belated thanks to big Dave for the links! Cheers mate!

Well that was a disappointing match. Some dodgy decisions and to me I think Tiote is becoming a liability. Can’t pass and gives too many free kicks away.

We are going to be up against it now.

  21. I can’t believe what I am reading on here. Are people still ranking Williamson under Coloccini based on tonight’s performance despite the Argentine’s comical defending for their 2nd? Seriously?

It’s time it was said, Coloccini has been POOR this season. No excuses for him as he is supposed to be our captain. He sits on Santon’s side but he doesn’t help him out as a defender should He doesn’t call out instructions and instead just comes over to cover. How is the lad supposed to learn?

Santon was poor for their goal, but I have a sneaky suspicion Pardew apportions part of the blame to a lack of cover from Obertan. What other reason could there be for the strange substition of Oba? I’m sorry, but Obertan played very well going forward and it shouldn’t be his job to babysit a grown man playing behind him.

It’s so frustrating as we had enough opportunities to get something out of this game, but didn’t and in the end it has stung us. We need to sign a CB (Quality, not fucking Tomkinson!) and a LF/ST and FAST! No more excuses.

  22. Totally shyte again tonight.
Hard to believe we were the home team after 5 mins.
Well and truely out played in every department.
    No marking of players.
Didn’t press the ball when they had it
    Second to everything just about.
Ran out of steam after 60 mins.
Getting ever deeper in the ****.

  23. Make that 7 wins from next 17 not 18 😳 TBH I can only see 3 ,4 at the most we would expect to win. Reading are in same boat so won’t be easy ,nor will Norwich who are well drilled ,we should beat Villa though. Then in Feb, Chelsea ,Spurs ,Saints ,can’t see us winning any of that lot .

Last 3 games of the season by the way West Ham, QPR and Arsenal 🙄

      (Quote)

  24. Marveaux and Anita have played well almost every time they have been called on, but are being badly let down by the idiots behind them.

I can’t wait to see the back of Tiote. **** poor on the ball. Bigirimana already looks better than the lad.

      (Quote)

  25. Didn’t understand the taking off of Obertan. And why bring Ranger on with only 4 minutes of normal time left – desperation. I would not have played Shola anyway – got some skill but no pace or anticipation ie waits for the ball. He also regularly fouls in the box losing us any advantage. Ref gave us nothing. Didn’t think Shola going down was a foul but there was an earlier one with Jagielka hauling our man down in the box. Fellaini got two free kicks which should never have been given. For the last one he lost the ball so just fell down – falling down worked twice for him. Ref 2 NUFC 1

  26. We deserved a point today and got nothing. We deserved nothing at their place and got a point. It’s fair and I can’t complain.

      (Quote)

  27. Welly, I like Marv – but he’s not a regular to be relied upon with his injury record and for all Obertan’s runs- he still lacks an end product for me. Good players tonhave in the squad though…

      (Quote)

  28. I’m starting to think Cabaye should replace Tiote when he returns. Marveaux does not deserve the bench and should play as our most advanced midfielder. Play.

      (Quote)

  29. …Play Cabaye and Anita as our deepest two and flog Tiote for whatever we can get in the summer. Sick of the lad.

      (Quote)

  30. Agree that bringing on Ranger was a waste of time. We just lost any shape or cohesion we might have had.

As for Santon I do think that he and Perch have been exposed due to poor coverage from the midfield. When we put together our good run at the start of last season we had Jonas and Raylor covering the full backs. Now we have attacking players who are poor defensively.

      (Quote)

  31. Anybody else not bothered if we get knocked out the fa cup ? to be honest the position we are in i hope he rest’s some of our best players for that game and not rush STaylor or Cabaye back for it either . A recharging of the batteries a couple of new defenders in HBA ,Cabaye and STaylor fully fit and we will be ok . We are in a battle but we have enough quality to get out of it with a couple of good defenders in .

      (Quote)

  32. I want to get these opinions off my chest:

Everton’s equaliser should never have been a foul. But what a strike that was, Although Obertan turned away from the ball I don’t think we can blame our guys for that one.

Their second however could have easily been avoided and if it wasn’t a demonstration of the blatant need for a new RB, then I don’t know what is. Perch caught well out in the build up, his concentration lapsed and found himself yards behind the Evertonian’s advance down the left. Poor, poor defending.

I think I have to agree with the Ref (and this is the only decision of his I can agree with) that when Shola went down in the box that it wasn’t a penalty. Shola lost his balance when he stepped upon the defending player’s foot.

What a horrendous call by the Ref right at the end of the game! I didn’t realise Judo was permitted in matches now…

Now I’ve always stood up for Obertan, but tonight he had a poor game. All the tweets I’ve read were praising him as one of the better performers tonight. In reality though he got off to a great start bombing down the pitch, but he sunk back into his old ways, hesitating just that little too long until the opportunity passed before a pass/cross. I was watching him on and off the ball for a lot of the game because I’ve always believed in his ability/potential and he can be a great creative player. But there were too many times where he lost possession cheaply or got caught out standing around or ball watching.

Fellaini… what a player. Watching him made me realise how much we miss Cabaye.

    Some positives:

Bigirimana looked good, he was constantly watching and tracking Fellaini. That lad has got great potential. Cisse gets on the scoring sheet again, hopefully Pards with put him back into the middle and we’ll see some more tremendous goals from him. Sammy is looking great too, he’s got a few canny tricks up his sleeves like! (Christ how spindly are his legs though?!!) He just needs to get a bit closer before taking the shot though, too many chances lost this season from attempts on goal from outside the box. I think someone’s been playing too much Fifa between training sessions! 😉

    That is all 😯

  33. Axel, Agreed ,right now I couldn’t give a toss about the FAcup ,just want us climbing the table.

      (Quote)

  34. Kimtoon, you got me wrong mate, I’m a big fan of Cisse, it’s just I thought he didn’t bring much to the game today, apart from his goal. If he plays central striker he will get swatted off the ball by the majority of defenders. He is poor with his back to the goal.

Demba Ba would have scored a couple today for sure. Not taking the **** either.

  35. Instead of blaming the ref, try looking at your style of play. The worst foul count in the premier league speaks for itself. Your style is not far off Stoke and for a team known for stylish play, it’s really not good enough and surprising. Your fans boo and hiss throughout the game trying to put pressure on the ref, it rarely works. Atkinson is a **** ref, but you did yourselves no favours with your robust style. Face it, if it carries on like this you could go down. Everton have more class and deserved to win, I would like the toon to stay up, but not if you serve up that **** every week!

  36. KIM @281,thing that sticking in my crow is this so called defence has lost it yes we have signed a r/b,but saying taylor and cabaye are coming back will help, not for a few weeks imo they have missed to much game time any c/b coming in is going to take time to settle, very very worrying time imo,the club took a gamble in the summer and lost, could be to late to fix it,i hope not but ime starting to worry 😐

  37. The Kid

Tiote is fucking woeful man, he just wobbles about fouling, and when he has it he just gives it away fucking **** man, so glad hes gone now. Bigi is better already.

Wonder what is going through debuchys head at the moment wouldnt be suprised if he thought **** that.
