Party poopers! Newcastle 1-2 Everton

Opening goal not enough
Opening goal not enough
Everton played the part of New Year party poopers to perfection last night as they ran out 2-1 winners at St James’ Park.

Goals from Leighton Baines and Victor Anichebe cancelled out an early opener from Papiss Cisse and gave Davide Moyes’ side the three points on the night.

In truth I’d say a draw might have been a fair result and Martin Atkinson can feel proud that he’s won the away side the match for them. Don’t get me wrong, there was nothing wrong with the Everton goals and what turned out to be the winner was as a result of yet more shoddy defending from the home side, but the decision to award Everton the free-kick which yielded their equaliser was weak and was the kind of the decision Newcastle didn’t get any of on the night.

It all started brightly for the home side who made a cracking start after Tim Krul lumped the ball up front only for the Everton defence to get mixed underneath allowing Papiss Cisse to steal in and nod over Tim Howard to give United the lead.

It could have been two moments later when Shola Ameobi’s flashed ball across the face of goal just eluded Papiss Cisse and perhaps should have been two when James Perch nodded onto the post. Vurnon Anita also went close as he just missed out getting on the end of Davide Santon’s cross.

However despite the early onslaught Everton were by no means out of it. They pressed forward and applied pressure without really threatening our goal but that changed just two minutes from half-time when Martin Atkinson adjudged Fabricio Coloccini to have barged into the back of Marouane Fellaini. With the ball some 35-yards away from goal the threat didn’t look to obvious until Leighton Baines unleashed a beautiful free-kick that flew past Tim Krul into the back of the Leazes End net.

The free-kick was amazing, but the award of the foul in the first place was baffling. Just minutes prior to that Shola Ameobi was brought down in the box yet nothing was given by the man who sat by and did nothing whilst Hatem Ben Arfa had his leg smashed to bits by Nigel de Jong. Go figure…

Shola Ameobi was brought down early in the second half with Sylvain Marveaux blasting the resulting free-kick against the wall, but the two very nearly combined shortly afterwards after Marveaux lobbed a ball over the top for Shola who controlled at the first attempt only to prod wide with his second touch.

Newcastle were trying to make things happen but in the end that was to be our downfall as Nikica Jelavić broke down the left and dazzled Coloccini with some neat stepovers before crossing the ball for Victor Anichebe who timed his run into the box superbly and thumped the ball past Krul to give the away side the leadwith 30 minutes remaining.

Far from bringing on an onslaught, Everton’s goal seemed to shock the home side who became more and more desperate as time went on. Gabriel Obertan went close as did Davide Santon, both testing Tim Howard at his near post. Papiss Cisse also got on the end of a Vurnon Anita cross only to see his header cleared and his effort on the rebound fall straight to Howard whilst Santon also failed to pick out an unmarked Cisse who would have surely levelled the scores from eight yards out.

It wasn’t to be though and United slumped to yet another defeat. The FA Cup this weekend will offer us an almost welcome distraction before travelling to Norwich in just over a week to take on former manager Chris Hughton, where hopefully we’ll have Yohan Cabaye, Steven Taylor and Mathieu Debuchy available for selection.

Howay the lads!

  1. no mention of tiote foul on naismith in the area? stonewall penalty as opposed to the ‘seen them given, seen them not given’ one on ameobi which you do mention

  2. Everton have had pennos against them 4 less than the challenge on Fellini so it’s about time we had a desision go are way !! And the game game at goodison we had not 1 but 2 goals disallowed even tho they should of stuck ! Wat a mistake giving pardew a 7 year deal 2 points off the bottom 3 and I thought nufc were in a different league to everton ha ha ha arrogant cockney

Ice – aye, apparantly Debuchy was heard saying ‘we are the ones in the blue aren’t we?!’ at the match last neet. He **** himself at the reply
That’s worrying news about Remy if its true tho. Mind in saying that, Demba Ba had a shot knee . Thinking about it mate, we shouldn’t be too worried as he’s still playing for Marseille so it’s obviously not career threatening and will be well monitored.

I know people are saying they don’t want Danny Graham and one or two other players who have been linked, but personally, if they are an improvement on what we have now – get the buggers in quick!!.
I’m not saying he’s my first choice – far from it. But is he likely to score more goals than Shola in a season? – yeah!!. Would he be good for allowing Cisse a rest in cup games? – yeah!!. It’s he likely to want it more than Ranger or Xisco? – yeah!!.
We fans always seem to pre judge players without giving them a fair chance. CABAYE?! – never heard of the kid!!. I’d bet Swansea fans said a similar thing about £2m man Michu. We sell Sinclair and replace him with some Spanish kid called Michu for £2m – well that’s us going down then!.
It seems we still only rate a player who has a £10m price tag.

  4. To be fair @4 – I dont think you will find snybody on this site who says Newcastle are better than Everton right now. However, we have had champion’s League & Europa League reasonably regularly over the past 15 years, whilst Everton have not. Going by club potential, I’d say it’s a fair bet the same trend will continue in coming years.

Yes, Everton are. Good steady club – but you are hardly exciting and rarely achieve anything of note come the end of the season …

Well done on turning us over though, no doubt you’ll finish slightly above us this season in upper mid table as opposed to our lower mid table. Quite the achievment. What a club. We are so jealous….

Sammy was very good at skipping past people but his decision making is terrible, choosing to shoot outside the box when a pass would’ve been a much better option shows his age.

A draw would’ve been a fairer result, you should’ve had a penalty for the Naismith-Tiote incident, but we should’ve had one for the foul on Shola Ameobi. Fellani could’ve been sent off the amount of times he dived just as Tiote might’ve been for some of his fouls.

      (Quote)

  6. Shamrock – I notice you seem to be a fan of Carroll. I wouldn’t be adverse to him coming back but again wouldn’t be my preferred option, but he would be an improve to what we have.
That said though, do you genuinely think that we would have a chance of getting him for as little as £10m?. Personally I’d be amazed if Lpool were prepared to listen to offers from us for anything less than £20m.

  7. I have noticed today that anyone, Toon based or not, criticising the ref or Fellaini or anything to do with Everton has provoked a furious and vicious anti Toon response from their supporters. What a touchy lot they are, arguably the most sensitive set of fans in the league – probably a result of living in the shadow of their auspicious neighbours. For what it’s worth, I said before Baines scored that the ref was going to cost us at some point. I was not wrong – he gave us nothing all night.

      (Quote)

  8. SHARPY reply to you on last thread 😉 the guy who has been a real let-down this season is tiote was very poor again last night has blown his high price tag now so owlheed will be un-happy,so dont think we will miss him at all while he is away

      (Quote)

  9. Tiote was abysmal last night as he has been the majority of the season, think it is time he was sold to make room for new and up and coming players. If we can get just over £10m for him that’ll be good, with that we can buy a new CB, and a decent LW player as Pardew wants to play Cissé in the centre and the forward he wants to get should have pace and power “like Obertan”, I suggest Lallana from Southampton, he can play LW,CM,CAM so would suit us, we can then play.

    ——————————Krul——————————-

  10. Sharpy – Carroll has done nowt to suggest he is worth £20m since signing for the Dippers. It is clear that he is surplus to requirements at Anfield and they will have to cut their losses at some point if they want to balance the books a bit. I’m not sure how many clubs would be willing to spend more than £10m on him – who would be attractive to him…

      (Quote)

  11. Shamrock
As much as I was heart-broken when he was sold, I don’t think Carroll has performed well enough for us to justify signing him for £10m+.

      (Quote)

  12. He would be excellent for us. We lack purpose and power when trying to find a way through. With him battering defenders and winning headers loads of space would be created for Cisse, Benny et al to exploit. He would be immense for us. We all have our own opinions though… 😀

      (Quote)

  13. Andy he is likely to be out for several weeks yet .He did it v reading on 8th dec left the club on crutches and had a knee scan but the club are coy on what the problem is 🙄

      (Quote)

  14. Ice, I dont blame the club for doing it with Ba – however now we have the experience of it I’d hope they would know better than to do it again!

      (Quote)

  15. Ice – Tiote has been well below par this season, and you’re right mate, that £20m price tag he once has will defo have an orange ‘reduced’ sticker on it now I’d think. To be fair, our midfield has been massively unsettled this season. That said, for me he and Jonas would be for the chop when everyone is fit – and to go one further, I’d probably look to sell him if we could get Sissoko in. That would be me, but I don’t see Pardew being as ruthless like.

Shamrock – I completely agree, I don’t rate Carroll at £20m, I just mean do reckon Lpool would be will to sell him to us for as little as say £10m after buying him for over treble that from us in the first place. I could see them accepting £10m from say WH if they wanted him but I still don’t know whether they would want more from us. Is it a different owner there now?. Shy bairns get nowt I suppose 😉

      (Quote)

  16. Kim
Maybe look at someone else then. The reason I thought Lallana would be a good shout was because he’s looked classy when I’ve seen him play and we have a family friend who’s a big Soton fan and he said that he thought back in their championship season, he was one of the most promising Soton players he’s seen in recent years, more so than AOC, Walcott and Bale.

      (Quote)

  17. Andy ,Yeah my cousin is a huge Saints fan ,poor sod and he raves about the lad .Ofcourse there is the Pards link as well to factor in so not hard to see why we been linked like. Still it will be dead in the water now what with him being crocked.

      (Quote)

  18. SHARPY if we are talking the same Sissoko you bet i would like him here, box to box player with a fair bit of skill

      (Quote)

  19. Could it be for some bizarre reason that we won’t have the official picture of Debuchy in a toon strip before we have the picture of Ba in the Chelsea strip ? This Debuchy medical is taking some time if you ask me.

      (Quote)

  20. I’m more concerned about a Cb coming in tbh Andy ,I really think once we have shored up our defence our attacking players will feel like a weights been lifted off their shoulders and start scoring freely again ,well that’s my hope like. 😉

      (Quote)

  21. Today on SSN he was talking about Debbie coming in and said we are hopeing for one more maybe two to help out. That worries me ,if it’s one more it’s odds on it’s a forward to replace Ba .Bare in mind he said MAYBE two ,that suggest to me there is no CB tied down or even a real possibility.

      (Quote)

  22. Sharpy – i’m not sure mate. He’s dead money whilst he’s on their books though. If someone had a word in his ear and said he’s wanted at the Toon, they are willing to pay £10m and give him £75k per week – would he dig his heels in and force the deal through? Or would he sign for West Ham for the same fee but 80 or 90 grand? The decision and cards would be in his Court, not Liverpool’s. If that scenario were played out, we’d soon find out if Carroll is indeed a money grabbing Judas or a genuine Toon fan!

      (Quote)

  23. I will go bloody loco if we don’t get a decent CB in,it’s a joke now and after waiting 3 years for one ,a CB should of been top of the list before anyone else then a RB then a ST.

      (Quote)

  24. Andy – I’m not sure that they are interested mate, was just using them as an example coz that’s where he’s at at the moment and I doubt Lpool would have any problems dealing with them.

Ice – we are talking the same lad and I think he’s class, similar to or the closest we could afford to Yaya Toure IMO. He’d be ideal for us in the same way Yaya is for City, can defend when needed but also looks a threat when we have our attacking spells in games.

Regarding Lallana – I admit I haven’t seen loads of him, but isn’t he abit similar to Charlie Adam when he was at Bpool. A canny looking player in an average team. I’m not sure he’d have the same impact for us as he has at Saints IMO.
Personally, I’d sooner go for Ince, Phillips or Redmond – the latter 2 being better value for money IMO.

CF wise, if not Remy, I’d like to see us go for Vossen or Hooper at Celtic. I’m not sure if Carroll would come with too much baggage and expect to be first choice in the team every week.

      (Quote)

  25. Ice@43 SO 40K a week plus 20k per appearence, that’s not too shabby if true and certainly explains why he got a cob on when on the bench 😉

      (Quote)

  26. Shamrock (from the last article) – Regarding the wisdom of playing Cabaye injured: Honestly, I don’t know what advice the physios gave. But the “injuries were no problem” position is simply ignorance.

And frankly, your summing up of our early season is based on the same. Go over it game by game if you want to insist that the results have been poor and there’s been no decline from mid-November.

      (Quote)

  27. Icedog fuk him im sure he won’t get no assurances to play through the middle there with Raffa and his golden child, and im sure he will know that allready 😆

      (Quote)

  28. What another shambles!

Pardew is feckless! He loves Shola. What does that tell you? I can’t believe how bad he is. Almost every one of Fellaini’s headers found a team mate; almost every one of Shola’s didn’t. If we’re relying on him to get us goals, we’re definitely doomed.

What on earth are Pardew’s tactics with Shola and Cisse popping up at right back throughout, giving away needless fouls and playing Everton onside?

Santon and Perch were bloody awful and Colo and Willo weren’t much better. Have we got a defensive coach?

      (Quote)

  29. More drivel from Pardew. Doesn’t he ever get tired of it? A striker with power and pace? What was Ba then? Oh I see, what he really means is a cheap striker with power and pace. Now it makes sense. Someone who will score 30 goals a season but will also play for 40K a week. Well there must be a lot of those players around right Derek? No doubt you will find us one and a cheap CB to boot. Thank God we have Derek to get us out of trouble.

      (Quote)

  30. Blackley & Brownlie

I’m starting to look to your side on the Pardew out bus..

A lot of games lost home and away have been put down to injuries, suspensions, bad luck, out of form players etc etc

Perhaps Pardew is just pants and can’t take us any further.

Surely we had a better team than Swansea, West Ham and Villa @ home ..

      (Quote)

  31. Santon and Perch were bloody awful and Colo and Willo weren’t much better. Have we got a defensive coach?

    Apparently not 🙄

      (Quote)

  32. Maybe Tiote could have a word with Wilfried Bony while they are away at the Cup of Nation like Ba did with Cisse or Cabaye did with Debuchy 😉
Bony wouldn’t be a bad addition either.

      (Quote)

  33. I don’t want to start off the whole Shola debate again but surely he can’t play 90 minutes anymore? The absolute lack of planning for Ba leaving is pathetic. We really only have 2 senior strikers now. Why did we let Best go? I know he is no star striker but who have we got to play now with Cisse other than Shola? What happens if Cisse is injured? This is madness. And now the talk is about bringing Maiga in. He hasn’t look like much for West Ham but possibly he’ll play for cheap wages. This is a shambles and getting no better.

      (Quote)

  34. B+B I tend to agree with most of that Fella, I thought we looked a lot better in the 1st half but it seems to be the same old same old we make stupid mistakes the other team scores then the defence just crumble, and when you add to that how much damage Tiote causes it doesn’t make us to good.

      (Quote)

  35. G2 – I get sick of his drivel. It used to be good for entertainment value, but now I just feel like flicking his face with a wet flannel and shouting “Wake up, you idiot!”

      (Quote)

  36. Aye Sharpy would love to have Bony come but would cost plenty. Can you see Ashley pegging that much out mate? And we would still need a CB. It’s a nightmare with a cheap owner with no clue. 😥

      (Quote)

  37. G2 didnt you know owlheed is the make-up artist at the toon has to over-load the mouth area in case we see the brown stuff coming oot his mouth

      (Quote)

  38. Aye B&B and Big Dave we always fall apart in the second half of matches. It has become a real pattern now. Team’s are killing us, especially in the last 15 or 20 minutes. Look at the Arsenal game. Well actually look at almost every one of our last 8 losses. Giving up goals in the second half with poor panic stricken defending. Krul was brilliant in the first half against Everton but the number of chances we give up is ridiculous. Surely he’s getting fed up as well?

      (Quote)

  39. Welly, injuries have not helped. Granted. But they are not the main factor in our aweful season so far. You should have a chat with Wolfie and Ben Watson. I think you would agree on a lot of things 😉

Anyhoo time to move on, seeing as Moyes is wrong about us…

      (Quote)

  40. Dave – What you describe, and what I see, is classic relegation form. We can only hope that HBA might just do enough to save us.

I’ve been saying for weeks that we can’t afford to keep conceding free kicks in our half because we can’t defend them. Tiote is the biggest culprit. That is something a manager should be identifying and sorting out. The fact that Pardew appears to be powerless to sort out the simple things tells you all you need to know.

      (Quote)

  41. 😆 Ice. Derek should be drowning in it by now. What on earth does Ashley see in him? Surely Ashley knows competence comes first? He is a businessman first as we all know so how to explain the continued presence our wor Derek? If this window becomes a disaster then Ashley will be a laughing stock again.

      (Quote)

  42. Kim – I know the Scottish league will be a lot easier to play in, but that is a cracking record and the kid is a natural finisher – and still young. Same with Bony, I’d be chuffed with either of those and reckon both would cost less than Remy.
Regarding the defensive coach, I’m not sure if we have one or who it is but I’d love to get someone like Tony Adams on the coaching staff.

      (Quote)

  43. Surely Norwich at home has become the next key test for Pardew. If we lose that one, surely that spells the end for Pardew? A loss to the 19th place team at home in the middle of a relegation battle. It just smells like a time when Ashley would act before the window closes.

      (Quote)

  44. B+B I do think if the defence is properly strengthened and we get our best players back we’ll be ok, the thing I worry about is Tiote he is a complete liability and although we don’t have to worry about him for a while, I do worry that when he returns someone will be dropped to bring him back in, which leads on to another problem, I do feel bad saying it as I am one of his fans but Jonas getting injuried has been a good think because with out it we wouldn’t have had Marvs goals or what he add’s to the team, but I do feel that when Jonas returns Marv will have to make way for him because I think Pards will find it easier to drop Marv than to let down Jonas.

Geordie2 I have said it all season our players don’t look fit enough and I think it has been proved now

      (Quote)

  45. cabaye mate been given shirt no 26 will reveal t/morrow,just for those that want his name on there shirt early 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  46. I’ve been on about our school boy defending for months, but Everton’s second was the best example yet! Absolute classic! It’s like we’ve now just given up any pretence of professionalism.

Let’s face the truth folks and not kid ourselves. We will continue to head south with a defence like that, and it seems we have no one on or off the pitch capable of sorting it out. I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t see the new lad making a lot of difference. Honestly, do we have a defensive coach?

      (Quote)

  47. I can think of a number of scenarios now where Pardew gets the boot. A loss to Norwich away, a draw to Reading at home and a loss to Aston Villa away and Pards is gone. A serious injury to Colo with no CB incoming and there goes the season. Ben Arfa out for longer than just February and a couple of injuries to our non-existent strike force. The list goes on and on. We have zero depth. Perch is not a defender period. He plays as a DM decently but that is all. Willo is not a Prem quality CB. Shola is a reserve striker at best now. Tiote has almost completely fallen apart. Another yellow yesterday. We have a poor starting 11 right now with no depth on the bench. Debuchy will help but God help us if he gets injured.

      (Quote)

  48. Agree with you Dave. It is very noticeable near the end of games. We lose a step or two all over the pitch and the opposition turn it on and score. B&B you are spot on about the defense mate. I have been saying it as well. We have one of the poorest defenses in the division. Only Colo is Prem quality as far as defending goes. And he needs a big partner for high balls but not Willo who is hopeless. Did you see his tackling from behind yesterday? It’s ridiculous how the club clings to the idea he is a decent CB. Why do they think we got him for 1M pounds from Portsmouth? He is no gem that I can see.

      (Quote)

  49. The figure I have seen is 12M pounds for Bony Sharpy @69. Can’t see us spending that much when we need at least 1 or 2 other players. I even have my doubts that we have really offered 10M for Remy. Time will tell but I’m not getting my hopes up with Derek around.

      (Quote)

  50. Mark – I’ve never bought that injuries, suspensions flannel. Yeah, Raylor. However, all the worrying signs were there before we lost Saylor, and Cabaye. HBA has been out a little while lately, but apart from that? I can’t think who else is missing? Jonas is certainly no miss, and Pardew should never have persisted with him for so long. Every team has injuries anyway. As for suspensions, they’re self inflicted.

      (Quote)

  51. G2 and BD – I agree about the fitness levels. That’s Pardew’s remit. Pardew kept blaming Europe. What the ****! I never bought that excuse either.

I’ve always been a big fan of Colo, but he seems to be losing confidence. Perhaps his heart’s no longer in it or perhaps it’s an Argentine problem that you lose your talent almost overnight?
