Brighton v Newcastle – FA Cup 3rd round preview

Brighton v Newcastle It’s that time of the year again. The time of the year I love to hate. It’s FA Cup time!

Cue videos of Ronnie Radford and various other giant killings from over the years – Stevenage a couple of seasons ago will probably be there as well – and lots of talk about the “magic” of the cup. Pah!

The only real magic of the FA Cup I’ve experienced is the two finals at the turn of the millenium. You know, the ones where we got resoundingly turned over and gave not a mere whimper as Arsenal and Manchester United strolled past us. Magic indeed. In fact to experience the real magic of the cup from an NUFC perspective I reckon you need to be over the age of 60, and even then you’ll need to be at least five years over the age of 60 to really remember it. 1955 it was. Not many remember it well…

You see the cup has been filled with heartache all my life and I’m actually at the point of not caring about it. Especially this season when our need for Premier League points means we can’t really afford a cup run when you consider the relative lack of numbers in our squad and lengthly injury list we are having to contend with. So you see, you can poke that “magic” somewhere where the sun doesn’t shine, but we still have to play the game unfortunately.

Newcastle:

New signing Mathieu Debuchy will not be considered for this one after his move from Lille yesterday. Yohan Cabaye and Steven Taylor are back in training but, like Debuchy, won’t be considered for this one. The next Premier League match against Norwich is supposedly the target for all three of them.

Hatem Ben Arfa, Ryan Taylor, Dan Gosling, Haris Vuckic, Danny Simpson ad Jonas Gutierrez are all still sidelined for this one, and they will be joined by Gael Bigirimana, who is suffering from a dead leg, Fabricio Coloccini and Papiss Cisse who are both carrying slight knocks and won’t be risked.

Brighton:

Bruno, Inigo Calderon, Vicente and Marcos Painter are all currently in the treatment room while Will Buckley – scorer of the goal via a deflection off Mike Williamson last season – has missed the last two games with a hamstring problem and is unlikely to feature later today.

Previously…

The most recent meeting between the sides happened just last season when Brighton sent us tumbling out of the FA Cup at the 4th round stage.

The two side have a remarkably similar record having won seven games each from 17 meetings in all competitions between the two sides. Only three of Brighton’s seven wins have come in Sussex compared to four for United.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle have been taken to a replay in a third round tie nine times in the past 20 years.

Brighton will be looking to knock us out of the FA Cup for a fourth time in their history.

The last time United won an away FA Cup tie was back in 2006 when we visited Cheltenham.

Final thought:

As I say I’m not too bothered about this one but I still want us to win it. I want us to win every game to be fair. However when you look at the team we’re going to be naming you have to say we’re there for the taking and I won’t be to bothered so long as it’s not stupidly embarrassing, like Cardiff in pre-season for example.

Sorry, but I just can’t get excited about this one.

Howay the lads!

  1. So one in, one out. It does appear we needed the money from the Ba transfer (little as it was) to fund the Debuchy transfer. How embarrassing for you Mike. What’s next? Perhaps you should set up a donations box outside St. James Park to fund further incoming. 😥

I usually have a passion for the FA Cup, but this season it may come as unwanted extra games with the UEFA games there as well.
I’d go with the above line up based on our current injury list, and hope Anita and Marv stay injury free.

  3. G2,it baffles me how we are this pauper club that cant afford to by anyone that costs the going rate, look at the carry on in the summer. Our current owner is an amazing business man by all accounts, but if we believe any of the ***** that comes out of the club we have this tiny budget to get new players. Dont get me wrong I dont want us to be paying stupid sums of money frr total mercenaries looking for a pay day,and by christ we have had our fair share of those, but surely we are making enough revenue with match day attendances, sponsorship, sky etc to stop pleading poverty..Boils my **** when the so cqlled little clubs pop into the market and pay 8m and up for players yet we haggle and fart about tring to save a few hundred grand which in the scheme of things is peanuts.Keep up the good work Mike…we love ya…not!!

  4. The cup game should be difficult with all the missing players. Even Bigi with a dead leg. Colo out so who will be our 2 CB’s? I’m guessing Perch will be one. Oh well with the kind of depth we have it should be no problem right Derek? Rumours of Danny Graham coming in? He isn’t bad but surely not to replace Ba? Replace a 25 goals scorer with a 10 goal scorer? I hope he’s not our only other signing. What can morale be like in the club right now? Well Cisse’s probably happy anyway.

      (Quote)

  5. Anyone seen Dummett has been recalled from st Mirren and is in the squad for tomorrow. Hope we play pure youngsters tomorrow ikke. No need to risk any senior players, as we are streched enough as it is.

      (Quote)

  6. Aye GG63. Mike is the world’s only pauper billionaire. He only pegs out on himself. Nothing but the best for Mike and whatever’s left over for the club. He has a huge amount invested in us I realize but is this the way to protect your investment Ashley? Have you looked at the league standings lately Mike and Derek? Two points out of the relegation zone at this point of the season. Unbelievable. And nothing but bollocks from Pardew who seems to have lost the plot.

      (Quote)

  7. We find cup games hard with a proper starting 11,no reason to think we are not in for another dose of heartache

      (Quote)

  8. G2 got a bad feeling about t/morrow but at the moment thats the way the team is showing at the mo,few asking about pieters may be ok,not for me hes been out to long we need someone in to hit the ground running imo

      (Quote)

  9. yes the FA Cup Live.. I hope we get beat so we can rule it out completely. we can’t even compete at the bottom of the prem + we have Europe.. we don’t need the cup this year..

      (Quote)

  10. Difficult time to discuss a cup game. I see Ba’s agents are busy fighting over the 2 M pound signing fee. A classy group they must be. Surely we won’t even risk Shola in this game as we only have 2 senior strikers thanks to some brilliant work by Derek in the summer. Chelsea lose Sturridge and bring in Ba. We lose Ba and bring in who? Surely it has to be Remy with no fannying about this time?

      (Quote)

  11. Ice it’s hard not to have a bad feeling about tomorrow. It might expose some of our youngsters as being not good enough. Is Campbell fit? Abeid will probably play and what about that other French lad in midfield? Don’t risk Marveaux Pards as he is one of our only players in form at the moment. Injuries in this game could prove deadly for us. I think it has to be Elliot in goal as well Sharpy.

      (Quote)

  12. Well I for one hope we effing batter them tomorrow! Got a score to settle and if our future stars cant give a Championship side a game then we might as well offload them now. Pretty much everybody in that line up tomorrow will have had both Prem & European experience.

Looking forward to a good game 😀

  13. Toonsy ,I have always loved the FAcup ,it’s the one I would love us to win but this season I can’t be arsed with it ,it’s a distraction we don’t need in our predicament as is Europe . We were supposed to enjoy this season ,Europe ,cup runs and what have you but due to a lack of nouse and forsight by our illustrious owner &co it’s all going down the swanee 🙁 👿 Shame on them and shame on them double if a decent CB and Ba replacement don’t arrive.

      (Quote)

  14. Shamrock@ previous blog ,thanks for the vote of confidence by the way ,though not sure I really know my stuff like 😆

      (Quote)

  15. Geordietwo…Chelsea actually swopped Sturridge for Ba and in addition got 5 million quid in the bank.. 😯 . It wouldn’t surprise me if Sturridge wasn’t earning more than Ba will be at Chelsea.

    Holtby to Spurs ….. gggrrrrr……

gg63@3 says it all. Pauper billionaire, that’s for sure.

He knows he will have average home crowds of approx 48K….. at least 19 times per year..

    Plus the Sky football money

    Plus NUFC merchandise…

Pardew do your duty and give Ashley the right signs to allow him to spend his money… 👿

      (Quote)

  16. No worries Kim. Sont think we have crossed swords very often, which means we must have similar views a lot of the time. If that’s the case, then you know your stuff! 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Hope you’re right Shamrock. I would love to see us give Arsenal a good thumping at home on the last day of the season as well. We can still dream and a win over Arsenal may be a necessity to keep us up if worst comes to worst (surely not)?

      (Quote)

  18. The only ones I feel sorry for are the loyal fans travelling a long hike in there thousands to follow a pseudo toon side in the FA Cup, a cup which used to really set my heart racing in years gone by.

Pardew has reduced playing in the Europa League to a bagatelle, ditto the FA Cup. He should be ashamed.

      (Quote)

  19. Spot on Munich Mag @16. If we don’t spend in this window then Ashley is an even bigger dolt than I give him credit for. It’s all there to be fought for. A new rich TV contract, huge attendances, merchandising, and Europe again. To win a cup is still my dream for us but Ashley is doing his best to make it remain only a dream. 👿

      (Quote)

  20. You’re right Porciestreet @21 that was silly of me. He might actually do it. I think every time we drop a position from last year’s fifth place finish Derek should give up 10K of his salary. He may actually end up owing the club money and that way we might get rid of him. 😕

      (Quote)

  21. “You have less options in this window,” Pardew said. “But it doesn’t mean to say it’s more difficult. There’s always a player who can enhance a team. We have a couple of strikers [on our list] who can play out wide, which would push Cabaye forward to play in a loose No 10 role for us, which is a role he’s done very well for us in the past. And we have a couple who would link up well with Papiss [Cisse] through the middle.”
Quote from Pardew. Does this mean Ben Arfa is not going to play the no. 10 role then? That sounds like Benny will stay on the wing? In a 4-3-3 formation if we had Remy-Cisse-Ben Arfa that might work well with Cabaye in behind Cisse. Let’s pray we get Remy. At least Pardew is starting to sound sensible as he says we need to spend a lot to stay up this season.

      (Quote)

  22. Newcastle’s players also expect to see more new faces in the dressing room before the end of the month, with goalkeeper Tim Krul conceding they are in a relegation battle despite finishing fifth last season.
“We’re down there and we should see this as a massive battle,” he said. “It’s been a hard season for us – last year everything went for us, this year we’re getting smacked in the face a few times.”
This sounds like reality setting in finally. The nonsense spouted from Pardew couldn’t continue. He knows we need a CB as well. This will be a very difficult window to sit through for us I think. A battle between wanting to protect his investment and not wanting to spend for Ashley.

      (Quote)

  23. Pretty hard to get excited about this really as I don’t give a toss. Usually I would but the Europa has caused us enough trouble, I guess going through easily now with all the kids playing and then drawing manure away and losing lightly would be the best thing. Get some confidence in the squad and then have a no pressure bow out match so we don’t get pulled into another tournament..

      (Quote)

  24. Pardew knowing we need to spend some decent wedge in this window means zilch if the owner doesnt really care, first and foremost he is a gambler,he might sit in the stands but its just a seat to him to view his profits,to us its a passion and something we have done all our lives.Woukld not surprise me if we get the same old ***** about we tried but could not get them to settle for ten bob a week so we will have to make do with the youth coming through blah blah balh,Ive never been an Ashley fan, glad we are still in existence due to his oversight when he bought us but since then its just been like bargain hunt.Of course he did give Fat Sam loads on money to spunk on rubbish players, think that says it all about his judgement when it comes to football,or have I got it all wrong and the team thats been playing all season and looking very poor is as good as it gets??

      (Quote)

  25. G2 – yeah, it sounds like Pards is really weighing his option up rather than “panick” buying just coz Ba has gone. I imagine he’s talking about forwards as journalists are asking about Bas replacement. But like I said either, I hope he and they are giving the same level of consideration into CB options and aren’t suffering from mono vision again this window

      (Quote)

  26. You’re spot on GG63 @27. Ashley has no football judgement whatsoever. He overspent with Allardyce, lied to the supporters and Keegan, got caught at it in court, then hired a couple of duffers including Kinnear. He finally stopped and took a look at the team, brought in a couple of decent players in Cabaye and Tiote (up until this season) but then our method was found out. Sticking with Llambias has been a disaster with his purples and other nonsense. There’s no way of telling which way we will head next with this owner. He spends too much time with his head up his own dark place as far as I can tell.

      (Quote)

  27. GEORDIETWO @ 24 I can’t remember Cabaye playing in a No10 roll can you 🙄 and to think he’s not even back yet and will probably be a bit yet before he is so going by that it sounds like he’s priming us ready for no striker coming in

      (Quote)

  28. I hope that’s not the case Big Dave. I’m not really sure what Pardew considers as the no.10 roll anymore. It’s very confusing to me. Didn’t he use to talk about Ben Arfa as the natural no.10? When I watch the team on the pitch sometimes I can’t tell what the formation is at all. Cisse was back defending on the wing several times against Everton. Does that make any sense? I realize Perch was having a hard time but why Cisse? We seem to be trying 4-3-3 sometimes but at the end of games when we are trailing Pardew seems to panic and just try anything. We had better get this sorted out.

      (Quote)

  29. I’m not hearing anything about an incoming CB. This is getting worrisome again. I thought we wanted to do our business early in the window. Time is passing Ash/Llam. Don’t keep kidding yourselves that our defense is fine as it is or we will learn the hard way.

      (Quote)

  30. Kimtoon….we have Willo 😉

Geordietwo, I don’t think Pardew knows his best side. He has so many skillful players at his disposal and just cannot get them to play. That’s down to him I’m afraid.

      (Quote)

  31. Well tomorrow will at least give the fringe players a chance too shine and show they are above the level of Brighton .I think we will win it tomorrow .

      (Quote)

  32. There is absolutely NO CHANCE that Remy will end up at the toon.

Isn’t Pieters the cloggy left back out of contract in the summer. He will be our left back signing, and cost us nowt. I hope we’re still in the big league by then though.

      (Quote)

  33. GEORDIETWO yeah he said a few times that he see’s Benny in the No10 roll which I think he would excel at but I don’t recall Cabaye playing in a No10 roll well not the roll I would think of being a No10 😯
But tbh although I backed Pards from the start he has been really pissing me off over the last few months and I am getting tired of the ***** he comes out with

      (Quote)

  34. <<<<<<< org that way for pardew slaggers 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  35. G2 – just coz the papers arent writing about a CB doesn’t mean we’re not working on one mate. Pardew has said in press confrences that were desperately short of defenders and he has made it clear to the board that we need defenders in.
Granted that was pre Ba exit, and I think that’s why all the talk is about a forward.
Like I say though mate, I hope they are working on them equally hard, rather than trying to get the forward in first then leaving themselves the last week to get a CB in, or a rival club getting their hands on a CB we could/should have had.

      (Quote)

  36. Big D I see the number 10 position as the fulcrum of the side, the bloke in midfield who makes everything tick, a bit like Kean, Carrick, Scholes etc. Neither HBA nor Cabaye fit that roll as far as I am concerned. An on form Tiote (if the old Tiote ever returns) or Anita could fill that roll perhaps, maybe also Marveaux.

I really would like to see Pardews “best team” once everyone was fit, and whether there was a place in it for Tiote.

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy17, the defence has came in for some hammer lately, and rightly so, but at the same time the way the opposing midfield walk through our non-tackling and tiring midfield is also quite shocking. Our fitness levels seem to have dipped damatically compared to last season. I wonder what is behind this, surely not nerves ?

      (Quote)

  38. If Remy comes in along with a centre half and we only lose Demba it would be an excellent transfer window for us…

Would love to see Cisse in the middle with Marvauex behind him and Ben Arfa and Remy on the wings. Cabaye and Anita as first choice defensive midfielders with Tiote out of form. Santon and Debuchy offering width as wing backs and Colo with Taylor or another quality centre back.

Would be a very strong team. Only possible reason for poor form would be Pardew’s lack of ability to know how to use them.

Unfortunately, I don’t see a centre back being signed.

      (Quote)

  39. MM @38 no chance Pieters is still not fit and the fact he has been injured more than fit for the best part of 2 seasons means he is a risk .

      (Quote)

  40. I’m looking forward to the end of the window already! Hopefully it will bring some good surprises though. Did I really see we were joint fav’s in the betting with the Makems to sign Danny Graham? Where do they get this stuff from? 😯

      (Quote)

  41. Axel..is Pieters still cream crackered ? I thought he was on the mend.
We all know crocked players has never scared off the toon before, we have quite good experience in investing in damaged goods. Ba, HBA and Marveaux three pluses, Gosling a minus.

    Kimtoon, it’s a good one that isn’t it … 😆 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  42. Batts you know I have been vocally behind him but some of the **** he comes out with would make you think he was smoking funny ****.

JJ what makes you think Remy is ready 😯

      (Quote)

  43. Some great comments from all. Anything short of a good CB and a forward coming in would be a disastrous window for us right now. We can put a good starting 11 on the field with those incomings. Getting Ben Arfa and Cabaye back is a must as well. We can argue about where Ben Arfa should play but his quality is unmistakable. He pulls opponents out of position, he is an excellent passer and his left foot is deadly. We miss him badly and it shows with every game. But what else shows is our lack of ability at the back. Colo looks worn out and fed up trying to cover all over the pitch. That is down to Llambias who has been an idiot for far too long, and Ashley who has let him be an idiot.

      (Quote)

  44. Good point Munich Mag @51 but our away form is even worse than that. I know it’s against Prem teams but still if we go behind there’s a big chance we won’t recover. I would love to see our young lads shine in this one though. Another great opportunity for Sammy, Abeid, Fergie and some at the back as well including Dummett and Streete possibly.

      (Quote)

  45. Personally I would be happy to see Aubameyang or remy come in this window simply for the pace and happyness to play out wide element. A CB has to be a priority as well. I’m a massive Saylor fan but he keeps getting injured. Plus even when fit he needs better competition than Williamson to push him on.

      (Quote)

  46. If the Daily mail is to be believed tomorrow’s team looks like
    —————————-Elliot——————————
    -Tavernier———Perch–Williamson——Santon(possibly fergie)-
    —————-Bigirimana———-Anita——————-
    —Obertan————Marveaux————-Sammy—
    —————————-Shola——————————

      (Quote)

  47. MM yeah he is still not 100% he is running but he was pencilled in for rejoining group training half way January . It will take a while yet before he is match fit .

      (Quote)

  48. MM – I agree mate, I’m not sure whether its maybe a combination of injuries to some many people’s and I’m sure the Euro games have made it difficult to get the training right.
You’d think that success would bread success wouldn’t you, but to be fair to us, Man City have struggled to adapt abit as well. Obviously they have coped better than us thanks to their free spending mega rich owners. But they haven’t managed with CL footy and are far from dominating the league either.
I expected it to be a tough season this season with the extra demands, but certain didn’t expect us to struggle this badly.
What pleased me in the Everton game was that we seemed to tighten up after taking the lead. It took a wonder strike from Baines to level it up, however the freekick was yet another clumsy stupid tackle from Toite. We did create chances throughout and were unlucky not to score a 2nd.
We need to take heart for that mate, coz we have a run of very winnable games coming up.

      (Quote)

  49. I really don’t think a CB is coming in cause of what Pards said in that interview on SSN yesterday. After talking about Debuchy when asked about more signings he said we are hopeing to bring in 1more maybe 2. Considering all the talk is replacing Ba then it will be a forward and probably no CB yet again. 🙄 Are we really so cash strapped we can’t afford both 😯 ,To not sort the defence again will be our downfall and for the sake of I dunno say 5 or 6m Jabba could lose millions if we drop down in TV rev and the PL cash AND the value of the club .Also does he really wanna look a **** for takeing us down twice in 4 years after all the press bigging him up for being astute in the market last season 😉

      (Quote)

  50. A big risk playing Shola. If he gets injured we are down to 1 senior striker for the Norwich match. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him subbed early if he starts. Otherwise it could have been worse for a projected starting lineup I suppose Andymag.

      (Quote)

  51. More and more I think we need a coach for the back 4. This would be the time to bring one in. We either need to sort Santon out defensively or bring in a LB and move Santon to the wing. But he is right footed and I’m not sure where he would fit in. Clearly has some talent but badly needs expert coaching now. Our junior defenders could use more help as well. I’m thinking of the likes of Good, Dummett, Streete and others. Who is our best defensive coach at the moment? What does Stone actually do? I would like to have a clearer picture of how we train.

      (Quote)

  52. I wouldn’t wanna see Marv or Anita in the squad as we really need them fit for Norwich , be gutted if one of them gets injured .

      (Quote)

  53. GT
Aye, Ranger and/or Campbell to get game time in this one I reckon, possibly even Xisco 😯 . At least we’re not worried about Willo/Perch getting a knock cus Taylor should be back for Norwich.

  54. That’s what I’m worried about as well Kimtoon @61. I think Pards still has visions of cup glory dancing in his head after all his talk from previous seasons. Surely he can see now is not the time to take risks. Show some confidence in your younguns Pardew.

      (Quote)

  55. Kim
If there is any worry about them, I’m sure Pardew can sub them off, though they could be key to defeating a championship side who are threatening the top of the league. We havent been brilliant recently and this is a C team essentially going out so I won’t be suprised with the loss.

      (Quote)

  56. Those formations look decent for Norwich Andymag @62. Would love to have another French forward (you know who) in by then though. Wait a minute I’m starting to dream again mate. 😆

      (Quote)

  57. I think a loan deal for Lescott would cost an arm and amleg, so we wont be signing him.

Maynor Figeuroa is out of contract this summer. Bit off form recently but a step up from Williamson in my opinion. He’s 29. Thoughts?

      (Quote)

  58. G2 ,It’s sad that we find ourselves not wanting to risk players in our first FAcup game due to incompetence in the summer. 🙁

      (Quote)

  59. Just saw the bit in Toonsy’s article about bigi being out, contrasts what the Daily Mail are saying but it wouldnt be the first time that they’re off the mark in terms of reports. Sub in Abeid into my FA cup team if that is the case, can’t think of anyone else to play that role with Inman loaned out.

      (Quote)

  60. GT
Its okay to dream mate, just don’t hope for it, thats what kills NUFC supporters. 😉
    Shamrock
I hear lescott is off to Villa on loan. Figueroa would be a decent shout though at his age I doubt he’d want to be 3rd choice.

      (Quote)

  61. Andy, I reckon he’d challenge old glass legs Saylor for a slot in the side. Elsewhere, Squillaci & Djourou are on offer 😯

      (Quote)

  62. GeordieTwo Santon learned his trade at Milan, Italy, the home of the rock hard defenders, or at least it used to be.
If they couldn’t instill some defensive awareness in him then we should hold our breath with wor bunch of experts.

Remember we had Mark Lawrenson as defensive coach a few years back. Canny he was like…not… 🙄

      (Quote)

  63. It’s more than sad Kimtoon @67 it’s pathetic. I think a lot of the talk about Ashley being ready to peg out on a defender last summer is just that, bollockes designed to protect him from criticism by the supporters. It’s easy to make that stuff up now but the purple talk from Llambias tells the real story. They actually thought Willo was a class defender who could fill in easily for Saylor. As for Figueroa Shamrock@66 not so sure probably too old for us and probably would want a decent wage which we would never agree to. Hasn’t fared that well this season either.

      (Quote)

  64. Shamrock
….so Figueroa then 😆 . Sure there are other deals to be found, Carr probably has a few up his sleeve.
