Game On! Brighton v Newcastle

Game on at the AMEX
Game on at the AMEX
Welcome one and all to this “Game On” article which today will see us do battle with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Yes that is correct, the FA Cup is here once again and ordinarily I’d be up for the cup. I just can’t seem to get myself excited about this year though.

Still that is just me and I don’t want to tread on any toes so if you still have love for the cup don’t let me get in the way. We still have to play the game anyway so me may aswell try and win the **** thing, although we’ve been trying, and failing miserably, to do that for weeks now. Perhaps, in that case, the cup could be just the distraction we need? I doubt it…

United head to Sussex looking to avenge our fourth round exit of last season when Will Buckley’s deflected strike was enough to give the home side a 1-0 win and send Newcastle tumbling out of the cup to lower league opposition for a second year running.

The match preview for this game is online here for you to peruse at your leisure. It features news of injury concerns for both sides, a brief look at the history of the fixture and some facts and stats to whet your appetite.

As ever team news will be published in full below, and today it will be provided by Big Dave as I don;t actually finish work until halfway through the first half. I’m sure he’ll have the team news up as and when it becomes available.

We’re on ITV1 which is when you know the masses are looking for an upset, but on the plus side it should mean that getting a stream from them, or from any of the overseas broadcasters showing the game, should be pretty easy. Once again normal rules apply and if you happen to find a decent one then please feel free to share it with your fellow NUFC fans.

Howay the lads!

Brighton:Ankergren; David, Greer, El-Abd, Bridge; Hammond, Bridcutt, Dicker; Orlandi, Mackail-Smith, Barnes

Subs:Kuszczak, Dunk, Crofts, LuaLua, Buckley, Dobbie, Hoskins.

Newcastle: Elliot; Tavernier, Williamson, Perch, Santon; Anita, Bigirimana; Obertan, Abeid, Sammy Ameobi; Shola Ameobi.

  1. Its not right to say ashley wont spend money on players.
how much did he pay for Cisse ?
He will spend, but as has been stated, he expects valu for money.
He wont go buying an RvP etc.
What he doesn’t understand tho is we need at least 11 full purples in the squad and proper quality backups pushing for their places.

  2. Ba’s goals, and Cisse’s goals later in the year got us out of some sticky positions last season.

We don’t have enough up front, consequently our midfield have no-one to hit, so we falter badly.

We don’t have those goals in the side so we will carry on falling. We are 5 yards off the pace and have been for the whole season, apart from the last 2 league games. Brighton are mid Championship and they battered us for commitment, pace and speed today. Pardew has every right to look shell-shocked, ditto Carver and Stone..

  3. BB I agree we can’t sit around and hope that when Pardew get’s players back that we will miraculously improve. I can’t explain how we finished 5th ;ast year and are so poor this season, but whether he has been found out, lost the dressing room, just been unlucky or whatever else I don’t know, but I don’t have confidence that he knows how to turn this around. We can fiddle while Rome burns for too long as when it’s a pile of cinders it’s too late. If we get relegated there will be a mass exodus and we will be in the championship for 4-5 years imo. Last time round Ashley panicked with what 8 games to go? This time we need to be more proactive or it’s curtains

      (Quote)

  4. BB a few points
1 I honestly think he believed he had set us up right to win today, and was genuinely shocked we didn’t. (As he should be)
Yeah but he shouldn’t have to take the blame for players that arn’t good enough or don’t turn up, by blaming Pards the players are getting away scott free.

2 But if he thinks we are lacking quality with the side he put out, then do something about it.
Do you honestly believe Pards wouldn’t want to improve the team and get better players ? off course he would, but he’s only the manager it’s Jabba that buys players.

3 Put half the squad up for sale tomorrow if needs be, but grow some balls ffs.
so you want him to sell them then try to replace them ? now that would be a lame thing to do 😀 would it not make more sense to try to bring players in then let players go a bit like Simmo and Debuchy ??

4 If he believes he can sort it out, then DO IT, but so far he has drawn a blank, game after game.
He can’t do it by himself he again needs the owner to back him

      (Quote)

  5. I hope that Cabaye, Cisse, HBA, Debuchy, Krul and Collo, the french speakers and internationals have had a good sit down, a chat, and realised we need a super-human effort to get the club AND the manager out of this ****.

      (Quote)

  6. If pardew isn’t happy with the quality, well he can only look at himself.
He did the deal with SAF for Obertan for example. Plus he has bought in Elliott, Bigi, Abeid, marv, amalf, santon, and Anita.
Thats the quality he thinks s good enough, and why we are looking a pile of doo doo.
How many of those 8 would get in any other PL team ❓
Then add in two ameobis, ferguson, willo, Tav, Ranger and Perch.
Not enough quality, You’re not fucking wrong 👿

      (Quote)

  7. BB I think Pardew and the Chronicles constant bigging up poor reserve players says it all. There are players who played for the toon today who should be 3rd choice at least, in fact they should just be moved on. Not good enough. Too little skill, and not mentally agile enough.

      (Quote)

  8. Dave I agree it appears the owner has been very lacking in his support for Pardew. What I don’t get is why Pardew was saying one year ago that’Mike wanted to know when he was going to buy a centre back’. If that is true who cocked up? Pardew not identifying who he wanted and apparently being happy with what he had and not pushing enough, Carr in his scouting, Llambiarse for screwing up the negotiations and not getting the player, Ashley not releasing the funds, or maybe all of the above. Who knows but if they aren’t panicking now and can’t see we need several players in January to make sure we avoid releagtion they are bloody deluded.

      (Quote)

  9. Deb I have been calling for him to come out and just state the obvious and just say that the players weren’t good enough, but I think there is a line and IMO sloppy chops Harry crossed that line when he publicly ran his players down same as Buck Rodgers did, I can’t remember too many top managers publicly slate their players as I think there is a big chance it will come back and bite you, they will normally try to defend them. on sloppy chops the same players he has run down will be the same players that will have to get him outta the **** and again IMO the players will be ok if they go down as most of them will be able to walk away so he can’t really count on them after abusing them in public

      (Quote)

  10. Big Dave – I hear you mate, but if he cant change what he has got, then he MUST do more to get the best out of what he does have.
This is the nub of my point.
As a coach he isn’t improving what he has got. His coaching is letting the players down as much as they are letting him down.
“pass and move” ffs its not rocket science, kids can do it better than our lot. That is the remit of the coach and his trainers.
They haven’t got a clue mate. Its embarrassing.
Basic football. Keep it simple. Practice practice practice.
Too busy playing cards, darts and fucking ping pong.
Corners, free kicks. Fucking hopeless and laughable.
It all comes from the boss.

  12. All you people calling for Pards to be sacked are forgetting one thing, there is no chance Fat man and Owl heed will sack him, regardless of how many fans start calling for it.

Pardew is not just an employee, he is big pals with Ashley and Derek. He was obviously given an 8 year deal because he is a yes man, he has to do what the owners want. Yes they’ll occasionally give him some money to spend (as little as they can) and allow him to vent a few concerns but he will never bad mouth the owner or Derek. He is here to keep his mouth shut and the club in the Premier league, for as little money as possible.

I honestly think Fat man is only using us at the moment to help sell his crappy gear, but whilst he is still expanding he’ll stick around,, but i think he has an exit plan for a couple of years time.

      (Quote)

  13. Deb @ 382 I have said that before but what I believe is that Jabba and co were after a CB but couldn’t get one cheap enough, then the next think was that the Cisse deal came along so the took him while they had the chance because they knew that Ba could fuk of in any window he wanted. So after buying Cisse Jabba didn’t want to give anymore money for the CB and thought we could gamble on what we had. But I don’t think he can afford to gamble as he is at a risk of not just loosing a few hands but the whole lot. as I really do believe that if he **** it up this time the ones that backed him before and didn’t want to hurt the team by not turning up etc will naturally walk away

The trouble is Bootsy. No one can name any and that’s why we need to give Pards his chance.

It was the most embarrassing debacle the last time we went searching for a manager.

      (Quote)

  17. BB the players are capable of more but some arn’t giving it because they know they don’t really need to because they will still get playing as Pards doesn’t really have anyone else, I hated to see that bastad Ranger get a chance because I don’t think he deserves it I would rather play Willo over him and thats saying something. and there is players that arn’t good enough and can’t give more but atm they are all we have.
But im sure when the fuk pot Jabba see’s all the abuse Pards is getting him and Lambastad are laughing their beans off because they’re getting away with it when most of it is their fault

  19. BB @ 390 what bit didn’t make sense. ❓ ❓ the part that they bought a striker that scores you goals and wins you games because they knew that Ba would fuk off the 1st good offer came in because they were that stupid to allow him to have the clause ??

  20. Anyway, the board wont sack Pardew.

The easiest thing in the world to do is shout for Pardews head and not provide a list of possible candidates.

    Clueless springs to mind.

      (Quote)

  23. Dave it just makes a mockery of their so called water tight strategy where they have allegedly already identified several replacements for each position. Either they have such a plan and they need to execute on it and stop p*siing around haggling over a few quid here and there, or it’s another crock of bull. Hopefully having been through this situation during our last relegation, they will have learnt something and move quick and back pardew. If they need to change Pardew they need to get on and do it

      (Quote)

  24. It’s really quite bizarre that Pardew has a track record of being a “one-season wonder”. I wonder what is behind that exactly ? Maybe he gets found out, because when we were at the top last season, and we were doing the business, and he was talking the talk, then I was obviously happy with our position.

This season we have been rubbish.

    It’s a strange one really.

      (Quote)

  25. Well fair enough. If we do get relegated, the owner can only blame himself.
He cant blame the fans, or player splits in the dressing room.
I hope he is happy with 15 – 20000 crowds etc.
It will cost him more than the price of a couple CB’s thats for sure.
I accept you think we have to stick with Pardew, but I have no faith he will keep us up.

  29. Shamrock I agree there is lots of good managers but I don’t think its about being free or costing money, but more that they wouldn’t be too keen on working for Jabba after all the **** he has caused and the way they treated other managers 🙄

Deb I hate the Regime 😈 but I think the problem is that they thought because they were lucky before getting £35 mil for Carroll and getting Tiote, Cabaye etc all cheap they thought they could keep doing that.
But I think they might now know that bargains are the exception and not the normal

      (Quote)

  30. Bootsy – Don’t say what I said a few weeks ago “I refuse to accept there is NO ONE”. You will be hounded mercilessly to name names.

It’s quite ridiculous that some people think that in the whole world they know there is no one better than Pardew who would be prepared to take the job. Lets have a list of a dozen managers from them of all the managers who they know would not take the job because of Ashley.

Also, they support long term stability but contemplate sacking at some point if its all going tits up. That’s contradictory to me.

Moreover, if they contemplate calling for his sacking in certain circumstances, how can they do so when they argue that there is no one better!?

When you say, like I did, that’s its not my job, that’s not good enough for them. You have to tell name names or your position is worthy of derision.

Wellington has made the point that you have to do your homework well in advance before you sack your manager in order to get a replacement. I said that even for an ordinary job, professional head hunters get involved. These arguments don’t wash, they will pester you to name names if you persist. They have bigger questions to answer IMO.

  31. It is a weird one Munich Mag. He naturally has a massive ego and I wonder because he can talk the talk whether his teams initially get taken in and buy in to what he is saying, then as time goes on and they realise he is not as tactically aware etc as they thought that they start to question things which he doesn’t like and it starts to fall apart. As he has a track record for it, why should we be surprised that it seems to be happening here?

The point you make our football is spot on in my opinion. We clearly don’t practise enough pass and move football. It is a basic of football and we just don’t do it. Pardew must obviously take some blame for this, but I also think the top management need to react to the change in personnel. Lads like Carver, Stone etc was good when we had the likes of Barton, Nolan etc. The go-karting etc was good at building a bond etc, but this nonsense just doesn’t cut it when we have a squad filled with internationals like Debuchy, Cabaye etc. We now need coaching to get the best out of their ability e.g. pass and move, fluid football etc. Are Carver, Stone etc capable of teaching that? Highly doubtful. Pardew needs to ditch his mates and get in a proper set of coaches. If he doesn’t want to do that then maybe he should leave too.

  44. “Not once this season have I had my best side out. We’re not too big to go down,” Pardew said. “I think it is important to spend. We lost Cheik and Demba, one to African Nations and one to a transfer. The most important thing for us is our Premier League status now because we’ve put ourselves at risk with all the injuries and the run we’re on. We need to make sure we’re a Premier League side next season. We’re not hiding from that. We need our best players back.”

Pardew, who saw Shola Ameobi sent off for two bookings in the second half, was forced to name an inexperienced side and handed debuts to three youngsters. Newcastle have been caught short by their failure to strengthen adequately last summer and Pardew was disappointed that he was unable to play his strongest team against Brighton.

“I’m a bit aggrieved I can’t put out a stronger team than that because there are young players who gave everything,” he said. “Unfortunately they shouldn’t be playing for Newcastle in the third round, they should be in our development team. But that’s where we’re at. We didn’t have enough good players on the pitch. That team is a shadow of the team we can put out. We never thought we’d be in this position. We should have brought in one or two more. We’re paying the price.”

  50. Pardew has been saying for a long time that they should have bought more in the summer. However, he is now intimating that certain players just aren’t good enough, which he hasn’t done before.

He also said that he hopes to get another body in the next week, which would see them recruited in time for Norwich. This is strange because just a few days ago he was saying that there wouldn’t be any more incomings until after Norwich. Either progress has been made, or he plans to try and force something through as he’s so worried about dropping points to Hughton’s men.

One more thing, two respected French journalists were debating who was better out of Aubanyang and Remy earlier. Matt Spiro, who I have a lot of respect for, feels Aub is better in terms of both form and class. He also made a good point – Remy is used to playing wide right, not really wide left. Aub is used to playing on the left and is in form.

Has anyone seen anything of him? We are said to be interested.

Hopefully Llambastad & Ashley will take it the right way.

The thing that worries me is this:

If Pards feels he has to speak out like that to get his message across to the Board – then they must not have given him assurances prior to this game that they’d go all out for signings – if they did Pards would not have openly spoke out like that. Worrying really… 😕

I’m not a Newcastle fan, but as soon as is saw “power and pace” 3 names came straight into my head. 1) Remy. Has been poor this season but can find the net with ease, maybe a move away from France will bring the best out of him. 2) Aubamayang. had an amazing start to the season, but gone quiet over the past month and a bit. Probably the 2nd best striker in Ligue 1 behind Ibra. 3) Probably the best option, one of the only players who has pace and power, WILFRIED BONY. Easily the best attacker in Eredivise, reminds me of Drogba but with quicker feet, Could get him for about £12m. He’d be the best option by a mile. I’m an Arsenal fan, it was great to see Newcastle up there with the top teams last season, this season i feel very sorry for them, Bony would suit your style and would score goals for fun. Doubt it will happen though, who knows!?’

It’s Pardews/Mikes/llambias’ fault that adequate cover wasnt purchased in the Summer. We only have 1 leftback & 1 rightback without decent cover. Centerhalf doesn’t get much better when you take the 1st division fodder Williamson out and always injured Saylor..

Some people get totally mixed up with arguments and don’t understand other people’s points of view.

All I ask is to come up with a few possible candidates as they want Pardew sacked now.

My point is, if he was sacked we wouldn’t attract any better manager because we don’t pay enough wages for a good manager and any decent manager would want a big transfer budget.

I can name plenty of managers we could attract if Pards was sacked tomorrow.
    Joe Kinnear
    lee clark
    steve bruce
    paul ince
glenn hoddle (i know – but needs must!)
    steve coppell
    phil brown
    gary megson
    roy keane
    peter reid

  62. Shamrock @ 437 maybe Pards took my advice as I said a couple of weeks back that some of the stuff he was coming of with, praising Jabba etc and always making excuses for the Regime, would start testing the fans patience and that he needs to stop or the fans will start to turn against him and when that happens it becomes unbearable

    @Bootsy

That’s who I believe we could attract. That is why I believe we should stick with Pards at this time.

We are only just over halfway and there’s still time to get clear of relegation.

So now I’ve named the managers I believe we are able to attract, who do you suggest?

    @Mark

Yeah you can add them to the list.

Would you even waste your time interviewing them? 🙄
