Game On! Brighton v Newcastle

Game on at the AMEX
Game on at the AMEX
Welcome one and all to this “Game On” article which today will see us do battle with Brighton & Hove Albion.

Yes that is correct, the FA Cup is here once again and ordinarily I’d be up for the cup. I just can’t seem to get myself excited about this year though.

Still that is just me and I don’t want to tread on any toes so if you still have love for the cup don’t let me get in the way. We still have to play the game anyway so me may aswell try and win the **** thing, although we’ve been trying, and failing miserably, to do that for weeks now. Perhaps, in that case, the cup could be just the distraction we need? I doubt it…

United head to Sussex looking to avenge our fourth round exit of last season when Will Buckley’s deflected strike was enough to give the home side a 1-0 win and send Newcastle tumbling out of the cup to lower league opposition for a second year running.

The match preview for this game is online here for you to peruse at your leisure. It features news of injury concerns for both sides, a brief look at the history of the fixture and some facts and stats to whet your appetite.

As ever team news will be published in full below, and today it will be provided by Big Dave as I don;t actually finish work until halfway through the first half. I’m sure he’ll have the team news up as and when it becomes available.

We’re on ITV1 which is when you know the masses are looking for an upset, but on the plus side it should mean that getting a stream from them, or from any of the overseas broadcasters showing the game, should be pretty easy. Once again normal rules apply and if you happen to find a decent one then please feel free to share it with your fellow NUFC fans.

Howay the lads!

  1. TROY Mick McMackem is doing well at Ipswich… well if your going to draw up a list like that. 😆 He would probably turn us down. 😯

Ian Bogie has just been sacked at Gatesheed. 😛

  3. Roy Keane is not a ‘manager’, he’s just some ****** that dipped his foot into it after retiring as a player. The likes of him and Gordon Strachen are punidits and nothing more.

Don’t hold your breath Mark. We’ve been waiting 4 weeks for them to name a candidate.
We’ve had SGE to be fair. I think he has always demanded top wages. Ashley wouldn’t go near him.

Redknapp knocked us back last time. 😯
Now that was another kick in the slats! 😕

  6. My choices would be David Moyes, Laurent Blanc, Michael Laudrup, Di Matteo. Someone like those but we have no ambition.

Aye but wasn’t it because he likes to be within Range Rover distance of the South Coast and because of his wife? It was for personal reasons wasn’t it.

  8. I actually think Martinez could do a great job here, but Pardew doesn’t deserve the sack yet.

I fail to see how Martinez is any better than any other average manager. His win ratio is well below Pardews.
Steve Bruce finished higher than him with Wigan.

Wigan are third bottom! 😯 🙄

He must be great Matinez. 😯 😯

  12. The names that are coming up are just throw away names without any real serious thought. When we buy a player, do we say “yeah, we could get him or him from the championship, they would come and do a job”? Or do we do as much research of the up and coming players world wide. For example, I had never heard of Tiote, Colo, Enrique or Cabaye before we got them. That’s because I’m not a footballing scout. I don’t recall having heard of Wenger before he joined Arsenal for that matter. I leave that sort of thing to recruitment professionals. All I can say is that it is one of the boldest statements I’ve ever heard that NUFC, one of the biggest jobs in world football, cannot, because of Ashley, attract a top manager that would be better than Alan Pardew. Moreover, most of those who say we can’t get a better manager than Pardew have stated that they would sack him if relegation was on the cards. How does that figure, Mark?

      (Quote)

  13. Martinez would be out of his depth in the ‘goldfish bowl’, much like Hughton was. We need someone who can handle the pressure of being at a big club. Someone with more experience.

      (Quote)

  14. If, as a manager, you had a choice of picking from a combined squad of wigan’s and nufc’s, how many nufc players would you have? Remember this is at the start of this season. Start by naming your first 11.

      (Quote)

  15. Martinez would probably have us loosing a bit more stylish than now. Certainly wouldnt fix our defence. Also re Laudrup I am not sold om him. His past managerial record is not good! I also believe he is just carrying om the setup at Swansea which was instilled by the aforementioned Martínez(just like Rodgers/Sousa did)

      (Quote)

  16. I agree that all those names on YOUR list are unsuitable.
Incase you didn’t realise, I specifically said I think we need a foreign coaching set up now. Not old school British cloggers the likes of which we already have.
SGE is actually a good coach, but has baggage and a big ego and even bigger wage demands no doubt.
I’m certain there are many others who would work under the regimes way of working.

      (Quote)

  17. Pardew will not be able to stand the pressure that will build at sjp if results continue; I don’t care which friends he’s got in high places.

      (Quote)

  18. Martinez gets his team to buy into a certain stye of play. He is also fantastic under pressure and never loses his cool. I don’t see how people can say he would buckle under the pressure in a big club. How do you know?

      (Quote)

  19. Yeah its easy to slag off Martinez.
Yet he has poor players at a shyte club playing better than Pardew has international players playing at a much bigger club.
I’m talking about the style of football. Not his results. He’s doing an ok job with the tools that he has got.
Is it unreasonable to think he could do better than Pardew is with our current players.?
Its easy just to take the **** tho than have sensible debate isn’t it.

      (Quote)

  20. Well, that result was ****. Thankfully it wasn’t a league game and it was a reserve team so it doesn’t phase me one way or the other. Still, would have been nice to be more competitive.

We can now say with certainty that there is no depth in this squad. And if the young guys are the future then god help us.

So it’s back to the bread and butter next week. Looking forward to the impending 10 game unbeaten run.

  21. The best candidate ? the current manager , all other managers would of walked by now . Pardew has his hands tied ,he can only operate with the money that is given too him . Its time for everyone too realise that and realise Pards got us into Europe on a budget most other managers would of struggled too keep us up with .

      (Quote)

  22. axel – you say “all other managers would of walked by now ”
    Did Fat Sam walk ❓
    Did Hooters walk ❓
    Utter tripe statement

  23. Brisvegas – I’m glad you think that was our reserve team 😳
Have another look at the starting 11
Newcastle: Elliot; Tavernier, Williamson, Perch, Santon; Anita, Bigirimana; Obertan, Abeid, Sammy Ameobi; Shola Ameobi

      (Quote)

  24. I think everyone who is asking for Pardews head needs to give their own heed a shake! There are many reasons why he shouldn’t be sacked one being that no manager better than Pardew would touch NUFC with a barge pole and work under conditions which aren’t conducive to success.

Also look at David Moyes at Everton, he has had bad seasons but they stuck with him and he is consistently producing good sides now.

The fact is we have had an horrendous injury list and that has caused a lot of the problems, morale is also low and that will be due to poor form and also being let down by the club in not building on last years success.

We need a new defender and a striker that is beyond all doubt – if we get them and our best players return we will be ok, if we don’t get them we’ll go down.

Simple as that – over to you Mike.

      (Quote)

  25. I don’t believe this idea that we can only get Pardew and anybody else would walk. Were Ashley and Lambias personal friends of Pardew for years before Hughton was sacked like? They probably only met him a month or two before and sparked up an agreement then. There are probably other out of work, desperate managers that would have arrived for similar financial constraints to Pardew and would be better tactical managers. I admire Pardew for doing his homework and bringing in Carver but it hasn’t worked and now he is stuck with the two gimps and a group of players that can barely understand English never mind geordie and are sick of playing this ***** long ball dross.

  26. Bb – only Santon and Anita would be near a strongest starting XI??? Rest is reserve??

      (Quote)

  27. BB@485 Which of them would you have in our first team? I see 2 – Anita and Santon.

The rest are back up. Some I wouldn’t even have in the 2nd team.

      (Quote)

  28. BB

Whatever is was, it wasn’t our first team. There is a maximum of 3 first team players in that line-up and probably 2 after this transfer window.

It’s hard enough to get a group of good second string players to get a result, let along a group of mostly mediocre/below par players.

I really don’t understand the anger. I took one look at the team sheet today and knew we would get beat. Brighton are no mugs. Especially not in front of their own fans. Just because they are in the Championship it doesn’t mean we should expect to beat them with a group of players who hardly play together, with some hardly playing at all. It was make-shift and we played like it.

Now let’s focus on the competition that actually matters.

People forget how often Everton fans criticise Moyes about being “overly cautious” and “negative”. There were some fans calling for Moyes’ head as recently as late 2011. Just goes to show, most on here will forget the grief they are currently giving Pardew after a few months of positive results and good football.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Pardew is the answer long term, but he doesn’t deserve to be sacked yet. He deserves respect and patience for what he has achieved so far.

  30. I don’t buy this reserve stuff here is the clubs team list of reserve players
    http://www.nufc.co.uk/page/Teams/ReserveProfiles

Not one of them started the game 3 were on the bench. so unless you think that the official site has got it wrong

APP no one was saying that they were our strongest 11 just that they wern’t reserve team players which has been stated a few times

      (Quote)

  31. My point was that these aren’t our backup or reserve players are they.
Yes they should be, but actually we have been playing most of them all season.. Therefore they are not our reserves really.

      (Quote)

  32. Just different terminology, Dave. I guess I’m old school – your best team is the first team and the ones that replace them when somebody gets injured is your reserve team.

      (Quote)

  33. People are just being pedantic now. When people say “reserve”, they effectively mean 2nd string/back-up.

Chelsea fielded a strong team at home to QPR, which wasn’t a reserve side, but largely filled with their 2nd string/back-up. They got turned over.

Obviously it’s not the same as losing to a Championship side, but the point remains. Performance levels drop massively because the starting 11 don’t usually play with each other. You can’t just look at individuals and say “He is good enough, he has played a lot of games recently” etc.

      (Quote)

  34. I’m tired of this attitude that we are out of as many competitions as possible and concentrate on one! ‘Oh good Sunderland and others will have to play an extra game and we can rest!’. It’s every season, not one season when we have an absolute nightmare, every season! PATHETIC!! Do other teams not get injuries? Do other teams not get tired? Do other teams consistently get knocked out of cups like we do? It is becoming a standing joke to the point that we are annually targeted by National TV coverage. They rolled out the ‘championship Brighton and Premier League Newcastle’ and ‘cup upset’ lines like that always do but who in their right mind (any football fan) would look at that today and think anything other than; yeah the best side won, the home side and the team that was expected to win.

      (Quote)

  35. The kid – I wouldn’t have expected our first team to beat them. I’d have given us some chance if HBA was fit. We are cactastic home and away. Our away record is truly dreadful! Brighton must love getting us in cup drawers.

      (Quote)

  36. I think it’s safe to say our next three games are very important. We need players back or players in! They could be winnable on paper but if we lose its curtains as the next two after that are Spurs and Chelsea!

      (Quote)

  37. B&B

If our first team played like they did against Everton, Arsenal and Man United I think we would have beaten them, but it’s all speculation now so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

All I know is our next few games are winnable and if we continue to drop points then, and only then will I start to worry.

Straight up, **** off, Pardew needs a letter ‘B’ in his name and Obertan just needs a milkshake and a nice DVD before bed.

  39. Anyway. Lets just wait and see how we fare when we get senior players, like cabaye, saylor and so forth back. If we dont turn a corner by then, we can start talking about pardews and the coaches abilities?

  40. I said earlier let’s give him more time, get some players back and see if it’s still poor, then rethink . Don’t forget even when they do get back they won’t be match fit and will take a couple of games to get up to the mark. My worry is that players will be brought back too soon due to our crisis situation especially as it means Jabba don’t have to invest if players come back. Well he does have to but in his mind he’ll think we are o.k. 🙁

Hughton was unfairly sacked after doing a fantastic job and not many could understand it . The thing is though the level we were at they backed hughton more than Pards ,They paid premiership wages too a lot of players too stay Nolan, Barton , Colo ,jonas ,Staylor and they backed Hughton in the january transfer window when a couple of fresh faces were needed . They did not do that in the last transfer window for Pards .

Sir Alex Ferguson claims he has received backing from many Toon Army members following his controversial comment that Newcastle United is a ‘wee club in the North East’.

The Manchester United manager revealed that, among many emails he received about the issue from fans of the Tyneside club, several welcomed what he said.

‘Among the criticism there were also messages from people who feel they have been let down by the club and that it has not matched their own ambitions for success,’ he said.
