Vote: Is it time for Pardew to go?

Pardew under pressure
Pardew under pressure
The chances are that if you are reading an NUFC Blog then you are acutely aware of how poor our form has been pretty much all season.

Granted it’s a bitter medicine which is made more tolerable when results go your way, but when they don’t and you end up on a run like we are on right now then you have to start wondering what is going on.

Many of you longer-term readers will know that I’m the champion of long-term stability. I’ve got behind Alan Pardew from day one, mainly because he has to do well for us to do well, which worked last season, but now I’m left wondering if now is the time for change as we battle to stay in the Premier League.

I keep reading mixed opinions on it from fans of NUFC. To me the divide seems pretty split on the future of Alan Pardew as manager of Newcastle United. Some blame him for our results, others say that the lack of backing from the board has been a key factor, some will cite injuries as a factor and others will just ask who would be willing to come and work under Hinge and Bracket and the policies they so love to dictate.

So I thought I’d set out a poll and see what the opinion on this site is. Is the mass opinion that he must go or is it a vocal minority who are making themselves heard? I don’t know so please cast your vote now and leave a comment below.

  1. Ps. Manager of the season last season.
Demba Ba, Cisse, Cabaye, Anita, Bigi, Tiote, Ben Arfa, Santon, Colo, Saylor, Raylor,Ferguson, Krul, Elliot.
A Few reasons to have been cheerful !!
Add Debuchy, the pending Striker, possibly Siemens De Jong, Mbiwa, Another.
I won’t be “topping” myself anytime soon

  2. Just had to ask Mark, it was a pretty decent imitation of Pards you have to admit. Just a wee bit over the top. 😆

You think players like Bigi, Perch, Ameobi x 2, Ferguson, Ranger, Williamson and Obertan are good enough? These are the players he has had to use time and again this season.

Sorry but people on here need to grow a pair and actually stick with a manager FOR ONCE!

Changing managers every two seasons just does not work!

  4. I would love to be a fly on Ashley’s wall right now. He must really be wondering about his brilliant plan to make us another Arsenal.
Mike: Howay Dekka, what do you think after yesterday’s performance? Are we actually in danger of being relegated?
Dekka: Mike, I really don’t think so. We’re being very clever on the transfer front and Pardew is a top class manager. All our players are brilliant. Just look at Shola. He already has a goal for us this season! I was brilliant to extend his contract. And then there’s the brilliant play of Jonas whose contract I also extended. Relax Mike we’re going to be on easy street next season.
Mike: Well that’s certainly good to hear Dekka because I could have sworn we lost to Reading at home yesterday.

  5. ashley will look like an idiot if he sacks pardrew! giving him an 8 year contract was just stupid. it doesn’t matter what manager comes in because ashley wont spend money on players when needed!

  6. Looking at Jonas in closeups yesterday, he is definitely developing a gut and has lost a lot of pace. He must be taken out of the side. We’re not exactly pacy as it is but he is getting ridiculous. We have no alternative to Cisse and Shola right now either. Teams will know they can focus on Cisse and he walks (or runs) right into their offside traps.

  7. Stuart79, we had pretty much the same squad of players as last season and we were garbage at the start of the season. What happened ? Were the players bad ? We have not improved after almost 30 games this season.

  8. I voted No. I fully understand everyone’s frustration and reasons for calling for his head, and I can understand people drawing comparisons with Adkins as he has just been sacked. But look at Paul Lambert. He did a similar job with Norwich, getting them promoted and having a good 1st season in the EPL with them before leaving for Villa. He hasn’t become a poor manager since joining Villa, he just has a squad of young inexperienced players who aren’t good enough at the moment. That’s the position that Pardew has found himself in this season.
If we can get Saylor, Cabaye, Ben Arfa back fully fit and Tiote back from the ACoNs, plus 3-4 players in this window then I think we will be ok.
IMO the squad is not good enough. Krul is good, but his distribution is very poor – behind him Elliott and Harper are below average stand ins who offer Krul no competition.
Defenders, He now has 4 PL standard defenders, Colo hasn’t been his best this season and wants to leave. Saylor is regularly injured. Debuchy has just arrived. Santon sometimes suspect when it comes to defending. After that, Williamson, Simpson and Raylor try hard but aren’t good enough. Behind them Tav, Streete and Dummett are too young yet and need loaning to CCC teams. Midfield and if you look beyond Benny who has done well this season, you’d have to say that between injuries and lack of form Cabaye, Tiote and Jonas haven’t had the impact they had last season. Anita, Marv and Bigi have done ok but again beyond the Obertan, Gosling, Abied, Amalfitano, Fergie, Vuckic and Sammi have either been injured or just very disappointing. Centre Forwards, well since Ba left I’d agree with Pardew in that we only have 2. Cisse can’t buy a goal and Shola has never been prolific and most agree that he’s a last 20-30min impact sub. Campbell is a good prospect but still very young. As for Xisco and Ranger, the sooner they are gone the better. I don’t believe either wanted to earn their money last season when things were good, nevermind a relegation battle.
I think I missed Perch out, but I’d put him in the same boat as Simpson, Williamson and Raylor – in that they may be PL players but bottom half standard – IMO. Pardew has a squad of 34 players and 13 are 22 or under, far too inexperienced – IMO.
That is our biggest problem – IMO.

I think Pardew has only had his strongest side out once and that was for only 30 minutes against the Mackems! Then players were always missing – Colo, suspended, Cabaye injured, Tiote injured and suspended, Jonas injured, HBA injured, Marveaux injured, both Taylors injured long term!

    Sorry your argument is flawed.

  10. Let’s get Christian Streich–current manager of Freiburg, certainly knows how to get the best out of Cisse and has their defense organized into the 2nd best in the bundesliga and (sound familiar?) was voted best manager in the Bundesliga last season! Freiburg are currently 6th.

My scouting habit has moved to managers.

  11. I would swear that after we went 1-0 up and got into the second half Pardew decided to go defensive. So he brings on Perch and Bigi and quickly we let in 2 goals. Bring in a bench sitter and a teenager in a crucial game? Madness. We run out of gas so often in games it’s ridiculous. How often now have we been overtaken in second halfves? It’s becoming frighteningly predictable.

This is outrageous! Who else could he have put on the bench? That’s the point – he has nobody – he needs to use back up players like Williamson, Perch, Obertan and Strolla all too regular and when they are playing regular they are found out. Then they have to play young kids who are just not ready and need loaned out but of course the squad isn’t big enough to allow them to be loaned out.

Nice try but the difference between Lambert and Pardew is that Lambert is doing the best he can with a totally average and underage squad. As pointed out on MOTD, Villa’s back line consists of players with an average age of 22. They are all over the place and don’t have sufficient experience. He is getting them playing though, they were unlucky not to have a shock win in the derby with the baggies. Benteke and Weimann are scoring goals and they will probably beat us. The situation Pardew is in is different because it is self instigated, like at W Ham.

  14. The decision to let Best go looks very flawed now given our injury list ,he would of been good to come off the bench yesterday ,even loverman would of bust a gut for us yesterday compared to shola 🙄

      (Quote)

  15. Stuart79 what I’m trying to say is we extended the contracts of the wrong players and gave away decent bench players. We extended Shola’s contract. That was a mistake. We sold Best without bringing anyone in. That was a mistake. That’s part of why we have no bench. Rat face is to blame but Pardew isn’t helping with his tactics either. I understand if Cabaye is hurt we have to sub him but why take Marveaux off when you have nothing on the bench? And why do we keep running out of gas in second halves? Other teams look much fitter to me. How has that happened if Pardew is on the ball? Aye FSOTC @164 I worry all the time about our apparent lack of fitness. Some of the players look winded just walking onto the pitch.

  16. All in all it’s a shocking state we’re in and there is plenty of blame to go around. Unbelievable to think this is a professional football club at the highest level in England. Amateur handling by a gang of wankers is more like it.

  17. Normally Kim, I’d agree re; Best. He was a good squad player. Hiwever, he’s yet to play for Blackburn I think. Due to injury, so he’d not have done us a lot of good this season…

Pardew admitted he made a mistake with the first substitution but even then there were reasons – he expected Cabaye to last the full 90 mins but he got injured – how could he of known that? Anyway Marveaux hadn’t touched the ball for 20 mins prior…

The fact is that in the summer we all knew (Pardew included) that we needed a right back, a centre midfielder, a striker and a centre half – we got a centre midfielder – that is all. We were in for Debuchy, Douglas and De Jong – if we would have paid a couple extra million they would have been here and we wouldn’t be in this mess. I have lost count of the number of pathetic goals we have given away due to poor defending.

  20. Terrible choices always end in terrible results. We ended up with an owner who is a bargain bin money grubbing ******. He brought in his rat faced pal who is a clueless ******. They tried to show some intelligence and hired Keegan but he wasn’t a lying ****** so they had to let him go (and lose a lawsuit to prove what a bunch of wankers they really are). They brought in Pardew who is an *** kissing ****** so they gave him an 8 year contract. Now they have a mutual admiration society nearing the bottom of the table. Everything must be going according to plan then.

  23. Stuart79 last summer Pardew thought we had a fine set of players and said so several times. He was basking in the glow of the manager awards. Rat face was slinking around doing nothing but nobody was alarmed at that point. We started the season and within a few games a lot of people were concerned by the lethargic play but Pardew was still spouting nonsense. Then injuries hit and players like Jonas and Tiote started playing cack. Cracks started to appear with Pardew. Our poor form continued and the players not only didn’t respond they began to look even more out of shape. This didn’t happen yesterday, it’s been happening all season. I just can’t let Pardew off the hook. He’s a yes man to a couple of fools.

So you blame Pardew – did you give him any credit last season? Maybe, just maybe, he along with the players over achieved? When you don’t strengthen you stand still and clubs over take you.

What was Pardew supposed to say after the transfer window? He couldn’t slag his players off and say the squad wasn’t good enough!

Who would you replace him with as the way I see it, the new manager would need to have a fantastic season every single season and I am afraid with Ashley here that is never going to happen. Besides we may finish top ten and next year finish top 6 but by keep changing the manager that is very unlikely – we know that because we have tried it!

Ben Arfa goes back to Clairfontaine when recovering from injury. Maybe that’s why he’s our only player that has any skill and looks coached properly? 😕

  28. I think it’s pretty clear I don’t just blame Pardew as I’ve tried to say Stuart79 @183. That’s why all the mention of rat faced wankers etc. I agree Pardew has been in a tough position and have said it many times. I also gave him credit for last season but thought it wouldn’t last with the combination of owner/managing director we have. I didn’t think we would completely collapse as we have however. Given the set of circumstances I thought we would be a mid-table team. But we’re nowhere near that and I think Pardew deserves some of the blame. He has made bizarre subs all season and doesn’t seem to gauge the players well. We have never come from behind to win a game with Pardew either. Even Reading has done that. I just don’t rate him as a first class manager. I realize we won’t get one with this owner but I still think Pardew needs to share the blame for what is happening.

  29. DJG – not trying anything mate, that’s what I believe. A coach is only as good as their squad.
Big Sam has had money for players, both when they were CCC and in the PL. I think Pardew agreed to let players like Forster, Best and Guthrie go coz he believed he would have received heavier investment in the summer, and started the season with a stronger more experienced squad of players.
Without sounding too rude I think Pep and Jose may have found things difficult with this squad.
Im not convinced that Carver and Stone have a wealth of experience or a quality to help Pardew out and personally, I’d like to see someone like Ray Wilkins brought in as no. 2. Tons of exprience and a very clever football man.

  30. Alex I have said the exact same thing before plus Strolla and Jonas look as if they are carrying a few extra pounds.

Mark it wasn’t even the quotation marks for me but I do think it was well put together and was funny as 😆

GEORDIETWO I have seen it being said lots of times about Pards saying he was happy with the players he had. But I don’t believe for one minute that he was happy but what else could he do say some of his players that he will have to count were **** and not good enough ? that would have been an even bigger mistake.
add to the fact that he has said that Ba should have went in the summer and because he didn’t it caused problems with Ba and in the dressing room 😯 then you have the injuries on top of that.

      (Quote)

  31. Stuart79@183, I think we all know that the team overachieved last season. Pardew too of course, but he managed to get everything working, and took all of the prizes last season. I am, or was, a big fan of Pardew’s. I still was until the weekend.

We overachieved last season, no doubt. This season however, we have not just had a dip in form. We have been absolutely pathetic at times. No tactical awareness, players looking unfit, too much Pardew blather telling us things which we knew were plainly wrong. However, until the Reading game the fans stuck with the players, and with Pardew, showing very little dissent, and giving him the space he deserved after a phenomenal season last year. Possibly the players have cottoned on to him too now ? Take a look at Carver and Stone, two full-blooded Geordies. They sit in there seats looking like meak lambs during games.

This season we have not just started playing badly now, we have been garbage for 95% of over 40 games we have played this season. Does that not tell you something is wrong ? 40 games, we have maybe put together 180 minutes of decent football.

Hark back to all of the Europa League games, and recall the thousands of fans travelling abroad, to be served up an absolute pile of rubbish. Pardew has run out of excuses, so now rather than take it fully on the chin he has a cheap shot at the fans. Laughable.

One thing is for sure, if the toon fans have been labelled as delusional in the past, this season they have been absolutely phenomenal in my opinion. Considering the dross that has been served up in a lot of games this season.

  33. That’s a good point Big Dave @188, he couldn’t come out and slag the players but was he really doing everything he could behind the scenes to make sure Llambias did his job? My guess is he got complacent and thought we would be fine. Talking about competing for 4th place this season definitely suggests that. He was over-confident but couldn’t start to admit it. Now he has used up every excuse possible but it won’t help. The players must be gotten into better shape and Pardew must bring the dressing room together. We have to see more signs of real fight in games like yesterday’s. We can’t seem to play well for more than a half and that’s not good enough. Improved consistency and fitness will be what I’m looking for in our remaining games.

Maybe the best bet is to create a wall of sound at St.James and that way Pards and gobshite Ranger got no more excuses like blaming the fans. Give them the positivity they have requested and see how they fare. Villa is a must win no two ways about it ,we should have 1 or 2 in by then as well to ease the pressure .
