Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa undergoing NUFC medical?

Deal nearly done?
Deal nearly done?
A veritable host of media outlets are reporting that Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is undergoing a medical at St James’ Park today.

Personally I’ve given up writing about transfer news until it looks as though we have players nearly “over the line” so with so many people saying that a medical is/has/will take place surely there is no smoke without fire?

The 23-year-old helped his club to their maiden league title last season and has been a first-team regular at the Stade de la Mosson since the 2007-2008 season, making his breakthrough when he was only 18 years of age and remaining a feature of a defence noted for it’s organisation ever since. All in all Yanga-Mbiwa has made 168 appearances for Montpellier scoring four goals.

Born in the Central African Republic, Yanga-Mbiwa moved to France as a youngster and holds dual citizenship leaving him able to represent either country internationally. However it was France who called up the then 20-year-old to their under-21 team first and Mapou has since gone on to represent the full France team three times.

A fee in the region of £6.7 million is believed to have been enough to tempt Montpellier to do business with us and I just hope we move to get this one tied up before anyone else can stick their beak in!

Yanga-Mbiwa is a physical presence at the back which is what we need, but I have a horrible feeling signing him will ensure we see the back of Fabricio Coloccini meaning that there is an awful lot of pressure on the lad to come into a new club, country and culture and get up to speed straight away.

Of course I might be wrong and Colo might stay for the remainder of the season in which case our central defender stock should be fine in terms of numbers but we’ll see.

More to follow, including the picture of him holding up the shirt at Benton, soon. Hopefully.

  1. I think its a definite. Ive been hawking the net and this is going to happen.

I think we’ll get another 2-3 in before the window closes. I also believe Colo is away.. 😥

  2. If we wanna stay up, Collo will be here till at least the summer – especially if San Lorenzo have no money!

Hope this is true, but he must be Colo’s eventual replacement. If not our defence is gonna be short. Colo and MYM are both 6ft arent they?

    Wouldn’t mind a Samba-esqe size defender tho!

  3. Hope thats not true Mark – we dont need a Danny Graham type. we need someone to drop off Cisse and improve our build up play…

    DESPERATELY!

  4. Tim Vickery from Talksport says they have no money for a transfer, and Im sure I read the quotes from the Chairman reiterating the same.

    Hope its right.

Would be typical of us to lose him for nout.

Demba Ba is probably worth about 25 milllion now…

  5. I will never forget and Montpellier Paillade! Thank you to MHSC, forever in my heart! A new adventure begins with Magpies

  6. @BigPapa.

I thik he exactly what we need. Good British spirit to get us thru the relegation battles.

I’d rather have odemwingie like. bother are short term fixes. I think either one and another for competition.

The wealthy backers story was circulating 2 days ago and seems to have some substance.

  9. I dont think changin manager will solve our problems, unless jose the special one comes. Mbiva sissoko will save our season, ben harfa also. Get rid of colo he isnt playing to win anymore, he dosent care anymore, can se it in his play. My perfect team against villa would be Krul debuchy mbiva saylor santon- obertan-anita-cabaye-marveou – Cisse and a midfielder Sisokko. Obertan out when benny is back. We wont go down people just relax, dont think we deserve it one more time! We have suffered enough.

  10. yea this one looks to be close to done 🙂 along with the young left back… and ive heard albeit its a rumor that we have agreed a contract with Gouffran to sign when summer window opens but Pardew would prefer him now thats why the cut price of 1m is been touted (no smoke without fire ehhhh)

Then sky are reporting Sissoko wants to join Toon with talks set for weds…. And hopefully Graham as well !!!!

I dont think all will arrive but if they do we will have the much needed depth to stay up … delight Ruban Kazan have hi-jack saggy faces bid for M’Vila deal to be done in 24hours now ‘Arry wants Sissoko who prefers a move to the North East…

  11. I have no doubt if we get him he isn’t the CB we have needed for a few seasons, but is a direct replacement for Colo, much in the sameway as Cisse was Ba’s replacement.

      (Quote)

  12. I seem to remember reading that Sissokho and Cabaye are close. Not sure if that’s because they played together, so the rags put 2 and 2 together, but still…

Get Dreamboat and Debuchy on the phone ASAP.

  13. Are we strengthening or just replacing players going out? It’s not clear yet but we definitely need another striker. Trying to get by with just Cisse would be suicidal in our position. It’s not like we’re sitting in the middle of the table Ashley. You saw the game yesterday Ash. Did you think we looked dangerous in attack?

  14. L’Equipe Reports today

If the transfer of Moussa Sissoko takes time, is that the boy needs to reflect, to the chagrin of Marseille and Monaco, both in the running to host it. And this time is not in their favor, because the medium has the heart of Toulouse who pencherait more to Newcastle, according to our information. He recently made it clear to people he may indeed join the Magpies this winter, and they have come in contact with the TFC this weekend to begin negotiations. Representatives player linked to Toulouse until June, and the direction of Newcastle will meet Wednesday, but a meeting with the boss of QPR is also expected on Monday, a sign that nothing is closed in this transaction.

google didnt translate it great but you get the idea

  15. if colo goes then we are no stronger, probably weaker in reality as it takes a while to settle in to the prem. we need to bring in 2 current premier players..no more french now i think.

  16. Cisse had a few good chances in the first half but didn’t take any of them. One good save by their goalie from Cisse but otherwise he shot straight at the goalie. In the second half he ballooned one over after a wild swing as usual. No poise and confidence there at all. I hope and think he will come good but he needs a partner on the wing.

  17. <<<<<<<<<, and as far as this dudes concerned they can have collo soon as they stump up some cash

  18. If we sign M’Biwa, Gouffran, Graham and Sissoko (yes, I know I’m getting well ahead of myself) I think along with Debuchy that would be a great window.

Graham might not be the big money Ba replacement we need but I don’t think we will get that in January. For me he isn’t the same type of player as Cisse. He knows where the goal is and hopefully being a life long toon fan he would bring a bit passion and fight which we seriously lack.

  20. just watched a video of him (aka Dennis Wise)… bit worried,, didn’t see him kick a ball over 50 yards, didn’t slide in and managed to stay on his feet and play the ball out, looks quick too. not got the making of a newcastle defender at all.

I’m sure Padrew will coach him in the ways of the toon….”hoof it man”, not pansying about back there.

  21. Without getting a head of ourselves , ala Remy , this is what is needed not sacking the manager. We need another 2-3 players of this quality in this window and 3-4 in the summer.

  22. rumours on newsnow that we are interested in Darren Bent… Don’t think it’s likely but would take him.. 😎

  23. Whumpie they reckon pieters will be out for up too 12weeks ,he has serverly damaged his arm. It is a bit out of character for him both the foul that led too the red card and his actions in the tunnel

      (Quote)

  24. As others have mentioned we need someone who can link midfield and attack. Bent scores goals but is not that type of player.

      (Quote)

  25. Axel – he had just found out that PSV had accept an offer for him from NUFC 👿 😛

Re MYM, he’s a touch of class and could well be the left we need at the moment. I’d have him in the calibre of Woodgate and Colo.
Also see we’ve offered €750k for Gouffran 😯

And Pardew hasn’t been sacked yet 😯

      (Quote)

  26. Re -the wealthy backers for SanLorenzo .This is to do with a big TV mogul who has been touted as possibly willing to stump up for Colo .Can’t remember his name but he’s the Argie version of Simon Cowel and a San Lorenzo fan. 😉

      (Quote)

  27. If he really wants to go and we can get the cash then maybe we should say bye bye. Hate to lose him and would be furious if he goes on loan to help them avoid the drop when we are in the **** ourselves ,but hey ho what can you do . I’m very surprised at Colo ,thought he had more loyalty than that .If his mrs is ill then it’s different but wouldn’t he of gotten compassionate leave by now 😕 Very confusing situation with the fans treated like mushrooms once again 👿

  31. If Arsenal get him I’ll pull what’s left of my hair out icedog and 3HW. Surely we must have him in if Colo is leaving. Even if Colo doesn’t go now he will go in the summer. This lad sounds like just the ticket. We need more in though.

  32. G2 report that meeting with Colo and reps has just finished half hour ago,but nothing heard about out come

  33. Fucking timing eh. If Colo had stayed and Simmo signed on we’d be one back up left back from a quality back 5 WITH depth.
    👿
I actually think, as many have said, these next few months really are make or break for us as a football club for the next decade.
If we stay up, it will be a lot down to the signings we make this window, so we could be left with a strong squad next year to start fresh and having had that mental battle should be a lot more resilient.
Go down and I can’t see us coming back up. Flip side of having players on affordable wages is that there WILL be clubs willing to swoop for our players (whereas last time noone was going to look at Barton etc).
I also think that even though this squad put in a hundred times more effort than the one that took us down, they aren’t tough enough for the CC. The ones that’ll be left anyway. Just don’t see any Carroll’s or Nolan’s or whatever.
Finally I don’t think we’ll take to the PL as quickly as we did this time – to revamp our squad and bring in such quality was really, really impressive work by the club. A shame they gambled and I can’t see us being so lucky with transfers again.

  34. Would people prefer Adkins over Pardew? I don’t know loads about him, but I know they played us completely off the pitch when we were down there.

      (Quote)

  35. ST @ 60 no for me Adkins hasn’t proved that he can do it in the prem yet so I don’t think he would be a step up from Pards 😕

Ice your right until they’re pictured holding the shirt up

  37. It’ll be interesting to hear what comes out of that Colo meeting with the club icedog. I suspect it won’t be good news for us. Especially if that club can stump up some money. Very interesting comments SolanosTrumpet @59. Yes another relegation would be devestating for us. We must stay up at all costs. Surely the board and Ashley have finally realized we are in real danger. The lack of any squad depth could be a final killer blow at the moment. Who can we bring on if Shola continues to struggle let alone Cisse? What real options do we have on the wing? Obertan just isn’t good enough. I like Marveaux and Anita but they are both very small players for the Prem especially in the same side with Cabaye.

      (Quote)

  38. I can understand everyone getting there hopes up about new signings, and them pulling us out of the cack, but at the end of the day 1-the new signings haven’t arrived yet, 2- we were just beaten by one of the bottom teams at home.

Not too much room for optimism if you ask me. Sorry like, don’t want to pinkleon anybody’s cornflakes…but that’s the way I see it. Pardew and the players ned to show some mettle and will to win, like Reading at the weekend, they just kept trying and trying. Wor lot ran out of puff, and ideas. Shocking really at home with 50K behind you… 👿

      (Quote)

  39. Mark@66, I’ve noticed from other clubs blogs that since his sacking by Southampton the fans there have been dreaming about Adkins joining them. The bloke seems to be the best thing since sliced bread now … 😆 😆

Hope the new Argie at Southampton takes them down actually. Schadenfreud is a great thing 👿 😆

      (Quote)

  40. TLR apparently we’ve bid 750K and a months supply of bovril crisps for him. Talk about being cheap. Just cos the lads contract is up in the summer…

      (Quote)

  41. @Mark & Big Dave
Well he’s good at getting promotions so that’ll probably be handy 😉
No I’m not convinced at all he would do a better job, don’t know enough about his career and haven’t really watched many Saints games. But he’s done decent this year, and they battered us.
I’m still leaning towards sticking with Pardew, however difficult he’s making it, but I think Adkins could be one of the few viable options should we sack.

      (Quote)

  42. They absolutely can Mark@69 but I’m not sure our players are quite in the same class. I like all 3, just think we need someone like Tiote when in form or an incoming with size and speed in there as well. We tend to get pushed around in midfield sometimes and have given up a lot of late goals. Of course having Willo in there is a real handicap as well mate. If we can strengthen in several areas we may turn it around. We’ll need it for next season anyway or we’ll end up in the same pickle.
