Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa undergoing NUFC medical?

Deal nearly done?
Deal nearly done?
A veritable host of media outlets are reporting that Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is undergoing a medical at St James’ Park today.

Personally I’ve given up writing about transfer news until it looks as though we have players nearly “over the line” so with so many people saying that a medical is/has/will take place surely there is no smoke without fire?

The 23-year-old helped his club to their maiden league title last season and has been a first-team regular at the Stade de la Mosson since the 2007-2008 season, making his breakthrough when he was only 18 years of age and remaining a feature of a defence noted for it’s organisation ever since. All in all Yanga-Mbiwa has made 168 appearances for Montpellier scoring four goals.

Born in the Central African Republic, Yanga-Mbiwa moved to France as a youngster and holds dual citizenship leaving him able to represent either country internationally. However it was France who called up the then 20-year-old to their under-21 team first and Mapou has since gone on to represent the full France team three times.

A fee in the region of £6.7 million is believed to have been enough to tempt Montpellier to do business with us and I just hope we move to get this one tied up before anyone else can stick their beak in!

Yanga-Mbiwa is a physical presence at the back which is what we need, but I have a horrible feeling signing him will ensure we see the back of Fabricio Coloccini meaning that there is an awful lot of pressure on the lad to come into a new club, country and culture and get up to speed straight away.

Of course I might be wrong and Colo might stay for the remainder of the season in which case our central defender stock should be fine in terms of numbers but we’ll see.

More to follow, including the picture of him holding up the shirt at Benton, soon. Hopefully.

I agree m8. I don’t know much about Laudrup but I’d definitely swap him for Pardew. I reckon he’ll end up managing a big club in a few years.

  4. I didn’t personally see him doing it but that’s the rumour mill
I just can’t believe they would tear up his contract
His wife did leave the kids with him so she’s pretty pissed

  6. Get Butland in as back up for Krul. Given and Harper were great for us. Two class keepers to keep each other on their toes. Harper will move aside in the summer and though Elliott hasn’t done much wrong Butland would be a step up.

  7. Bob the problem is there is somany stories floating about.
But I know if it was me I would just tell the club I need to go and I wouldn’t be waiting about trying to get a move to his Dads team San Lorenzo, as surely his marriage would be more important ❓

  8. I think we can still save this Batty but a lot depends on that uncertain owner of ours. Spend now or create havoc Ashley. His last chance as we’ve more or less all been saying.

  9. Batts its not over till Klondyke Kate sings 😆 😆 I think if we do get players in and there’s no bother with Benny coming back I think we’ll be ok

  10. Saints just had one cleared off the line and the rebound saved ,apparently unaffected by the sacking of Adkins, look well up for it. 🙄

      (Quote)

  11. Saints look a hell of a lot more threatening than us ,no sign of panic either ,they are giving Everton a right good game here.

  12. Lambert needed to take 1 of his opportunities Kimtoon. He looks a lot like Cisse right now. The ball just won’t go in for him either.

  13. g2 , I still think they look more confident than us though ,don’t you? .They got the type of players who battle going by when we played em 🙄

      (Quote)

  14. Yes totally agree Kimtoon. They play well. Will it start to fall apart with this new manager? They’ve taken a huge chance.

  15. A reliable French Twitter source has confirmed we have signed both Yanga M’Biwa and Haidara subject to medicals.

Now for a striker or two!

      (Quote)

  16. Jelavic has looked very poor. He looks out of form and lacking confidence as well. Everton will probably turn it on in the second half with Moyes in charge.

  17. Anyone believe in Karma? I wonder if we prove the theory.

We complain about Demba Ba leaving with his release clause – see us getting Cabaye for £4.5m due to a release clause.

We complain about our players being tapped up – see us talking about Debuchy for half a year before signing him.

We complain about Remy ditching us for QPR – see Sylvain Marveaux being a Liverpool player in all but signature before we spring up at 4am and offer higher wages.

It is slightly difficult to complain about our luck this past month when all that’s happened is what we’ve done for 3 years now.

      (Quote)

  18. Jelavic has been just as out of form as Cisse, but as he has had the luxury of being their main forward all season he has scored a few more goals and somehow avoided criticism.

Both of last year’s January coups have looked well off the boil this season.

Both will come good in the end.

BREAKING: DONE DEAL: We waited until we were 100% sure, but #Haidara to #NUFC is a done deal too! €2.5m from #Nancy. #WHFC miss out.

  20. I will have to pinch myself if we actually get M’Biwa.

He’s as good as Vertonghen. Quality player.

Don’t know much about Haidara, but competition for Santon is key.

      (Quote)

  21. Let’s hope the breaking news is all true ,but think I will wait till they holding up the shirt before I get excited like. 🙄

      (Quote)

  22. Is Haidara competition for Santon or is he competition for Perch and Ryan Taylor?

I can see us putting Santon on left wing to feed Cisse and save us buying a specialist winger. That way we can focus on singing a striker exclusively now.

  23. FJ

I reckon we are definitely after a winger/forward still. We will land Gouffran on the cheap. Not seen much of him, but he is apparently decent.

      (Quote)

  24. The Kid,

I asked earlier but no one seemed to answer – wasn’t Gouffran the guy who scored against us earlier this season in that horrible Europa League game where Pardew first complained about our youngsters not coming through?

BREAKING: We are receiving reports that #MVila has finalized a deal with Rubin #Kazan. Not in a position to confirm as of yet. #QPR BIG

Ha, Rubin Kazan stole M’Vila from QPR. Can anyone remember a transfer window where so many deals were gazumped like this?

  27. The crowd were chanting “Jason Puncheon, he went for a ****” and he was laughing.

Best moment in football since an entire stadium chanted “it’s f**king freezing, we wanna go home” a year or two ago at a Man City game.

  28. COUTTS,
Forget Sinclair on loan, Ashley will not sanction loan deals anymore.
Not disagreeing with you though 😉

  29. @ funkyjesus: The bad thing about QPR possibly missing out on M’Vila is, that it makes them even more likely to go out and offer Sissoko a massive wage package and thereby outbidding us again ..

  30. FANS SHOULD OWN THE CLUB,

No, Puncheon just left the pitch for 5 minutes to have a **** and the crowd noticed and chanted “Jason Puncheon, he went for a ****” and “he ***** when he wants” with Puncheon laughing himself silly at it.

Seriously tho, once the money is spent and the window is closed, I hope they continue the work and get the likes of Douglas, Sissoko and Pieters signed up on pre contract agreements to steel a march on the summer window.

Regarding these signings, it just shows that we can get signings in without spending a fortune.
Debuchy, MYM, Haidara and Gouffran all in for around £15m – that’s not bad work IMO

One thing Twitter has taught me is that Skysports know NOTHING!

Almost all of their stories come from another Twitter account. The worst thing is they don’t even credit any of the guys who are actually in the know. Disgrace.

  42. Ignore that guy, Douglas, as well. He is fed dribs and drabs from the club, but the french accounts/journos are well ahead of him.

It’s already confirmed that M’Biwa is coming tomorrow and has been for about 6-8 hours, so not sure why the lad is trying to create fear amongst NUFC fans.

      (Quote)

  43. @MsiDouglas: I wasn’t implying both would come to negative conclusions, by the way! Fact is on Colo #nufc are saying nothing. Still think Mbwia

  44. Kim

    Calm down 😆

He is not talking with Arsenal. In fact, all of the Arsenal links have been dismissed. They don’t need a CB.

The 3 and a half year deal is strange though.

It tells us one or both of two things:

    1. The player isn’t willing to commit to a long term deal with us and will leave for a bigger club soon after impressing.

    2. The club aren’t willing to commit to a long term contract as his wages are high.

      (Quote)

  45. Kimtoon

    1. First team football?
    2. Easier to leave after putting yourself in the shop window?
    3. Higher starting wage?
    4. Friends at the club?

Arsenal aren’t the proposition they used to be and they don’t offer ridiculous wages.

…and have I already mentioned that they don’t actually need a CB? 😆

      (Quote)

  46. Clear if Arsenal want him then he would most probably sign for them. This is a long term Arsenal target we’re talking about. All we know is he’s due in Tyneside tomorrow for a medical. Although I must say, why couldn’t they just arrange his medical in France?

      (Quote)

  47. Kim

They were more likely to be watching Belhanda imo considering Theo’s precarious contract situation at the time.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think Arsenal like him, but they can’t offer him regular 1st team football. You don’t go from captaining your club to swap duty with Koscielny, Mertesacker and Vermaelen.

Also, if Arsenal were to sign him they would then have FOUR £8-10million defenders in their squad. Don’t see it myself.

    …but you never know.
