Sissoko signs on for six-and-a-half-years

Newcastle have made it four signings in four days and five in total this January with their latest addition, Moussa Sissoko, who signs from Toulouse on an undisclosed fee.

The 23-year-old has signed a six-and-a-half-year contract at St James’ Park after speculation earlier on in the week linked the player with a move in the summer when his contract expires and not now when a nominal fee would be payable.

That fee is believed to be in the region of £1.8 million taking our total spending to roughly just under £20 million although that figure is plucked from speculative figures mentioned in the local press. However, in the region of £1.8 million for a player who was being touted around for over £15 million just last season is not bad business at all.

I’ve not been worried about this transfer at all. The lad has made all the right noises from the start and it was always going to end our way when Toulouse effectively suspended the player earlier on in the week. However I’m mindful that no deal is done until the player is on the official website holding up the shirt, and as you can see from the picture above we are at that stage now.

Sissoko has been speaking to the official website about his move and how delighted he is to be joining what is becoming a French revolution at United.

“I am delighted to be a Newcastle United player,” said Sissoko. “This is a massive Club playing in the best league in the world, and I believe my style of play is suited to the Premier League.”

“I have heard lots about how fantastic the Newcastle supporters are and cannot wait to get started. I am rising to a new challenge by coming here and want to firstly help the team improve this season and then progress after that,” he added.

Alan Pardew also welcomed Sissoko to United and praised the players “drive and energy” which will help the squad.

“This transfer window has proved very productive for us and Moussa arriving today is a massive plus for the Club,” said Pardew.

“He will bring drive and energy to the squad, he is a winner and that’s why I’m especially pleased to have him with us.”

“What all our signings this window bring is essential competition for places and that is great for the remainder of the season,” Pardew concluded.

Sissoko signed for Toulouse aged just 14 and spent his formative years progressing through their youth ranks before making his debut in 2007. In total he made 218 appearances for Toulouse scoring 23 goals. Equally impressive is the fact that he is a full France international having earned six caps for Les Blues along with representing his country of birth at U16, U17, U18, U19 and U21 level.

The number 7 shirt is now owned by Sissoko who has been described as the closest thing to Patrick Viera since Patrick Viera and the long-term deal shows a lot of faith in the player from our side as well, no doubt, as a protection should other clubs come calling.

Good work all round!

  1. FANS SHOULD OWN THE CLUB,

Just read it somewhere on one of Ed’s blogs. There is no real source on it, someone just posted it from one of their usual “ITK’s”.

Just thought it was a funny rumour.

  2. Pootle,

Maybe I am severly understating the negative side in that particular post as I have been tremendously overstating it in every other post for the past few weeks! 😆

  3. DJG – he’s similar to Yaya Toure from what I’ve seen of him. He’s strong in DCM but also can push forward in attack and knows how to score goals. As comfortable on the ball as Cabaye or Anita with the steel and grit of Tiote – oh and he’s a pacey ****** as well.

  4. Sharpy @72 ,I didn’t have the heart to let him know he was at ACON ,so didn’t bother replying ,let him sweat. 😆 😈

  5. DJG – laugh it up buddy but you’ll see soon enough. As it was pointed out earlier it was long ago that Spurs were bidding £18m for this kid. I’m not saying he’s as good as Yaya, I’m saying he’s similar to the way he plays.

  6. Need another striker? American international Jozy Altidore, age 23, scored again for AZ today.

That’s 15 goals and three assists in 19 games for them this season. 15 in 34 games last season (plus two assists). I think it’s fair to say he’s radically improved since his season at Hull and he’d bring a lot of eyeballs from the USA to the toon… just saying.

  7. I was thinking it was a bit **** not having a game tomorrow, but I guess that gives the new lads longer to bed in so we should see a couple on Tues 😉

  8. Arsene Wenger is complaning about us signing a lot of players.

Well, besides Arsenal signing a lot of players in the past – our combined spending for so many players is insanely low. We’ve spent about £5m more for 5 internationals than Man Utd spent on one kid who has never played a top flight game.

We aren’t QPR signing any player who has been mentioned in the papers before, these are guys we’ve been after. The fool needs to research before opening his mouth.

Why is he complaining? The transfer window is open to buy players, he could at his club if they had any money. Is it an anti-toon, anti-Pardew rant? They arn’t exactly the best of chums.

  10. DJG – you’ll see bonnylad, just wait til the Villa game, you’ll say “**** me, this kid is a cross between Viera and Yaya all under a toon top” 😯

FSOTC – you’re sell Jozy hard today mate 😉 , I’m sure I woke to a sells pitch re Altidore from you this morning. Haven’t seen anything of him since his Hull days but not a bad scoring record to be fair – how much do you reckon it would cost for him like mate?

      (Quote)

  11. Great buy but i still think Villa is too early. The team for villa will be:
    —————–Tim—————
    Deb – Sylor – Colo – Santon
    ——- Cabs —– Anita ——
    Gouffran – Marv ——–Obert
    ———— Cisse ————
This will not disturb the team that much and then they will sub Sissoko for Anita and MYM for Colo if we are comfortable but will push Santon up 5min before time to give New LB a run. This way we will have pace either side and Marvo and Cabs can do the magic in the center and Cisse can store.. we will win 3-1 at villa. Go T TooN

      (Quote)

  12. Yeah, sorry Sharpy. I wrote about him yesterday too since I figure we could still use another CB and a striker. I don’t know how much he’d cost but transfermarket has him at around 3.1 pounds.

It’s rather selfish on my part–If he’d come to NUFC, I could stop watching AZ…

      (Quote)

  13. DJG,

I don’t think it is anti-Newcastle, he has almost always been positive and respectful of the club in the past if not Pardew personally.

I think he just has a personally strict view on transfers that may well be similar to what Ashley thinks and he gets annoyed when teams buy entire teams in a transfer window.

I understand the morals of his point but there is nothing wrong with what we have done. I am sure there is a bit of sour grapes that some of our buys were on his summer transfer list.

Quite possibly, I bet Pardew was frustrated when we had scouted Remy and had all sorts of club officials watching him for 3 seasons or whatever, only for ‘Harry the bung’ to turn up at Heathrow with a suitcase full of money and a games console.

I think we may have a dodged a bullet there though, maybe it was divine intervention after all. 😛

  16. FJ – Wenger can eat **** and die the stupid idiot. What have we done that’s so offensive to him like. It’s not like we’ve signed 5 players for £30m plus and on £200k a week. What a fucking tool!

FSOTC – don’t apologise mate I’m just ribbing you man. Like I say, his goal scoring and assist stats are pretty decent and from what I remember he has pace as well. I wouldn’t complain if we got him for say £4-5m and took Sane for £4-5m as well. I’d be happy enough with that mate.

Pfft I wish we had them. Need a pacy Reus-esque striker for it, also ain’t got the Subotic ‘hard man’ defender.

      (Quote)

  18. Andy-Isn’t Gouffran speedy? Not that he’s in the class of Reus of course but still…it’ll be nice to have Jonas off the pitch and play with 11 men for a change.

Mbiwa is ard as nails as well 😉

  19. DJG -It was something a French journo said. I didn’t make the comparison.

Troy -I didn’t say I’d ban you. I said renember a time a few months ago when I would have just banned you 😉

      (Quote)

  20. Haven’t seen Gouffran play tbh Newkie. Don’t care that I’ve not seen M’biwa (know he’s good though), there is no way in hell he’s as hard as Subotic 😎 .

      (Quote)

  21. FSOTC- We are continually linked with PEA, not sure if this is an old story rehashed or not, but I like the look of him as well, looks like a goal scorer but if we spent €10.5m on PEA I seriously doubt there would be out left for a CB – but Christ knows with Ashley’s this window 🙄 😆

      (Quote)

  22. Nice window. Sounds greedy but I’m worried we still have absolutely no depth up front? Hats off though, good signings. Now het a good striker a d we are sorted!

      (Quote)

  23. It’s surprising how many people haven’t seen Gouffran play despite him playing against us twice this season in televised matches, lol.

He’s our most UK publicised signing so far.

      (Quote)

  24. If we sign PEA (we’re gunna call him that from now on aren’t we) it would be the greatest transfer window I’ve ever witnessed. There is no way we should be in the bottom half let alone the relegation zone with that squad of players.

The way I see it though is yeah, we can’t compare Gouffran’s goal scoring in Ligue 1 to the premier league. But we can compare his scoring in the Europa league to us this season, he was in the same group as us even. A direct comparison to us. In that competition he scored 4 goals in 5 games more than any of our forwards managed this season. So by that reckoning the guy must be no mug. I’m not saying he’s a world beater but we should be mindful of that and where we are atm as a club.

  36. We need another cf or am I just been greedy. HWTL. Mr Ashley as much as I think you’ve been a ****, well done at last.

  38. I hate how when Man U sign Zaha SSN news do a career profile thing on him whereas they just mention the position and name of the player when we sign them. Same with all the ‘big clubs’. 😡

It’s terrible, we could sign Messi tomorrow but if Cleverley had a three week injury we wouldn’t hear nowt about little Lio signing. 😥 😉

      (Quote)

  40. Andy-mentioned that earlier mate, it’s a joke. Zaha is average anyway. They were talking about us as if we’d signed a load of oldies as well but Fergie had spotted young talent that only he could develop-Haidara is the same age ffs! Sissoko and Mbiwa three years older…

      (Quote)

  41. DJG ,too right ,there’s something seriously wrong if we don’t ,christ after them two beating em we’ll never live it down. Actually I can see Lambert getting the boot and a new man coming in and we’ll end up playing a team trying to impress a new manager knowing our luck 🙄 .

      (Quote)

  42. Andy ,you got to laugh they are enthralled by Fergie and terrified of upsetting the whiskey nosed ****.

      (Quote)

  43. Sounds daft but respect to St Ettiene and PEA for being up front and honest, could have wasted 2-3 days of what’s left of the window fannying about on that one. Put it to bed and move on – or will they wait til the summer for him and not get a CF in Jan?

Let’s not get too cocky about Villa here mind. We should still respect the beast til it’s beaten. They still have dangerous players upfront and can score goals.

      (Quote)

  44. It’s quite funny, despite how shocking they look, I think there may be one or two decent signings to be made if Villa go down. Some of their youngsters have potential.

BBC Sport got it right – ever since that night when Villa put out the reserves in their European match in Russia, they’ve gone downhill. Same happened when Bolton did the same in Europe under Gary Megson.

I hope to god we don’t put out a **** team on purpose in Europe.

Just irritates me. My best mates a united fan and so are a fair few at school. Have to indure “so how’s Newcastle doing?” [in sarcastic tone], “How’s Ba getting along”.

  46. Well done to my mates Dekka and Mikey.. I have copped a lot of **** for hanging around them from Big Dave and his gang but I had faith in them and now everyone can see what I have always known. They are top blokes!!

Great signing 🙂 🙂 feckin happy days..

On Wenger – where was that **** sucker when we only signed one player in the summer!! I didn’t hear him saying that Newcastle haven’t signed enough players and we will be disadvantaged.

      (Quote)

  47. Alright lads, long time no speak. I’ve been extremely busy whilst exiled in mackemland for uni and have hardly had any time to come on here and write any articles. I am happy to report that I’m back in the swing of writing again so expect to see me on here a lot more.

Delighted with the signings that we’ve made this transfer window, I think Pardew saying that we were only looking to bring in one or two players was a way for us to lower our expectations.

The Sissoko deal is interesting, I didn’t expect him to sign for six and a half years but in a way it’s nice to know that he’s signed on for that long. From what clips I’ve seen of him I think he’s going to be a very good player for us.

It will be interesting to see who Pardew plays against Villa. That is a must win for us. The only problem I have is with Coloccini, I’m glad he’s remaining at the club but I hope he manages to keep a lid on his personal problems.

  48. I know there are a few folk on here who like FIFA 13, so a quick heads up:
They must be updating the squads on a regular basis this time.
We’ve already lost Ba and gained Debuchy, Mbiwa and Gouffran. No Haidara and Sissoko yet though. They seem to have downgraded Jonas OVR rating to 76 too.
You need to do a squad edit if you want them to play straight off though as they are in the reserves along with Ben Arfa!!
Maybe they are meant to be simulating Pardews tactical finesse?!?!

  49. Reet anyway, before I gan to bed,

Why we not playing Shola up front when Cisse couldn’t hit a cows **** with a banjo? No wonder Shola’s stats don’t do him justice if we keep playing right wing? 😕

      (Quote)

  50. Moreno, got to love your backing of Shola mate… can’t see why but I admire your tenacity in regards to sticking by him… 😉 😆
