What’s in a letter?

Letters from Colo?
Letters from Colo?
A rather flowery and quite sickly letter has emerged, supposedly from club captain Fabricio Coloccini who is allegedly addressing fans of the club who tried to get him relinquished from his contract recently.

In said letter Coloccini – if it is him – tells a story of sadness that no resolution was found and that his dream move back to Argentina wasn’t able to come off.

Personally I have doubts over the authenticity of the letter and the whole thing seems odd. In four-and-a-half years Coloccini has rarely addressed us, even through happier times. Now all of sudden he is writing to fans of another club? Sounds dodgy doesn’t it?

All the same there has been no denial from club or player and it is believed that the United hierarchy are looking into whether it is a genuine letter from Fabricio Coloccini or whether there are other reasons for it, such as more publicity for San Lorenzo perhaps.

The letter read:

“To my San Lorencista family

“I write these lines from a long way away where I am missing my country, my family and my close ones.

“And with sadness of knowing that after a series of meetings held here in Newcastle that my return to Argentina has been momentarily suspended.

“Unfortunately, life does not always end up like you wanted it or needed it to, many times is it influenced by third parties and the rigidities of contracts that are stronger than the will of one’s own desires.

“However, I am convinced that this moment of disappointment need not be an obstacle for me to declare my profound gratitude to each and every one of you for the affection and the support that you all have provided me during these past few months, in every way imaginable.

“Furthermore, I wish to acknowledge the patience and the respect of the media and the serious manner in which they conducted everything during this time for me and my family. I am sure that they have understood the personal situation that I have been going through and can comprehend that the silence maintained by both me and my representative, Marcelo Lombilla, during this time, has not been capricious, but due to the need to keep private certain matters.

“Lastly, I wish to thank the authorities at San Lorenzo del Almagro and especially show my gratitude to the president, Dr Matias Lammens and vice president, Mr Marcelo Tinelli, for all the affection, support and understanding they have afforded me and who from the first moment, without any reservations or conditions, were interested in my personal and family situation and who put themselves at my disposal.

“Essentially, I want to thank the enormous effort made by them, from every point of view, to remove whatever difficulties I may have come in touch with.

“In these times, in which the leadership of the Argentine football appears less challenged by various reasons, it is with deep pride – as part of the San Lorenzo family – I wish to acknowledge to Matias Lammens and Marcelo Tinelli on their personal qualities, for their professional qualities and for their excellent management, their honest work, their seriousness and commitment in placing the human-being over and above other interests, all of which is a heading from the chosen path for our club; and that in the distance, certainly, I am filled with satisfaction.

“Sincerely thank you for both affection,

“Fabricio Coloccini.”

How very pretty and sparkly. And how very dare us for wanting a player who signed a new deal whilst his personal problems were already underway apparently, to honour his part of the deal for another few months at the very least.

Seriously this needs sorting out one way or the other. It can’t be left “in house” as Alan Pardew would say because the longer it drags on the greater the animosity towards Coloccini will become. Can you really have a captain who isn’t fully focussed on the job ahead?

If the letter is proved to be genuine then something needs to be done. It’s as clear as day he wants away and I’ve said all along that it was amusing how Colo’s stance softened once he realised the only way out his contract was going to cost him in the region of £7m.

Colo has been great for us but this kind of thing is risking the very relationship with the fans which has allowed him to flourish in the Premier League and this would undoubtedly be a sour note to end things on.

  1. It doesn’t sound good but like you Toonsy I doubt it’s authenticity. If he’s a true professional(which I believe he is), he will soldier on giving his all for the club till the end of the season.

  2. I feel like there’s nothing in this. We already know the guy wants to go and he’s only staying under duress. Personally, I think we need another CB now, given the state he’s in, and another when he’s gone.

I don’t find the letter surprising at all, except that the style of it is so florid, but I figure that’s a cultural thing that doesn’t translate exactly. He’s hoping to demonstrate to the club & his family and whoever else that his heart is really in this move and he hopes they’ll come back for him in the summer, even though they signed a replacement already. Nothing to see here…

  3. i wonder why the club have not come out and said anything, its strange,it would put it to bed one way or the other 😐

      (Quote)

  4. FSOTC,i think we are done in the window now there will be no one else coming, another striker will not arrive until summer imo,its all paper and agent talk now

  5. Conor Newton has got a lovely assist for St Mirren against Celtic in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden.

  6. A simpler point of view, the content of the letter, i have to say, is somehow disrespectful towards us toon fans. If colo never writes it, i think he would have come out and denied it to prevent unrest among fans..now that nothing has come out of his mouth or his representatives, i start to fear that its indeed his letter..

  7. P.S – I would also like to pay tribute to the tens of thousands of Newcastle fans who turn out week in week out and support me and sing my name – despite me under performing and the team I captain playing seriously badly. I appreciate that this has been a difficult time for you too, not knowing whether you are about to loose your best defender at a time when the club faces a relegation battle – thanks to me and my colleagues.

P.P.S – Can I also thank Mr Ashley for the ridiculously long and very lucrative contract he offered me only last season – that I was all too willing to sign. It not only has provided me a dream lifestyle but also my family – the same family I didn’t afford a second thought as I dipped my Crammy bit on the side. It would also be wrong of me to avoid mentioning the fact that the same Mr Ashley has provided me funds to sponsor an orphanage back in Argentina. Whilst this is a some of a generous man, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed that Mr Ashley couldn’t find it in his heart to allow me to leave NUFC for precisely **** ALL!! … A very selfish man I think all you nervous Geordie fans would agree.
Still, don’t be too nervous. You can be safe in the knowledge that I will continue to be paid £80k pw for the next 6mths whilst I reluctantly remain at NUFC as it was a slightly better option to a £7m law suit.

    Yours ‘faithfully’
    Colo 🙁

  8. I believe 100% that if this wasn’t signed or had Colos approval the club and its pr dept in the Chron or Jurno would have made it crystal clear by atleast this morning that it was fake.
I also can’t believe for 1 min that san lorenzo would risk any **** with the Regime by doing this of their own bat.

  9. I some how doubt its from colo himself simply because he knows , that if it comes out to be from him he knows the backlash of the toonarmy will be massive and too play in front of them every home game would be quite frankly a hell . Wether he likes it or not he is stuck too his contract and if the bloke has any sense he will give an interview and tell the fans he intends to honur it .

      (Quote)

  10. @axel
good point on the interview. How long has it been since the last time colo gave one? 🙄

      (Quote)

  11. Its not wrong to miss his family in fact family should always come first, but I doubt the authenticity of the letter, it reads like it has been written on his behalf by someone in Argentina. Colo is a professional footballer and contracts and being away from home are all part of it, another 4 or 5 years he will be doing something else probably. He is far better here finishing his contract on the wages he is getting then moving on, he has not got many more years left as a high earner,. Whatever he decides I hope it all works out for him.

      (Quote)

  12. Also, it’s a letter to San Lorenzo–not us. So there’s no reason, in that context, for comments to NUFC fans, really. It would be nice for a statement from him to say he’s committed to giving his all while he’s here though.

      (Quote)

  13. i see no big deal in the letter at all and i expect that colo prob did do it. all colo is doing is trying to such up to his nation and local club to let them down in a decent way. all he is saying is sorry lads and lasses, i wanted to come back but it is not happening as i am staying with newcastle. Its no different to HBA gobbing off saying he wishes to play for his boyhood team at some point of his career and will only stay with newcastle if we show more ambition. at least colo has kept his gob shut in the UK and got on with his job.

      (Quote)

  14. If, and it’s a big if, that letter was actually issued or sanctioned by Colo, then I’m afraid he’s got to be dropped from the squad.

Why I say that? Because he’s obviously had lawyers involved in negotiations and they would or should have counselled him against either issuing it or agreeing to its issue.

If, however it’s not him behind it and it transpires it’s his father behind it, then I’d understand Colo’s reluctance to denounce the letter. If it’s or San Lorenzo making mischief, then I’m sure our lawyers’d be on the case immediately.

This is not good and whichever way you look at it, Colo’s got himself into a very messy spot and it’s gonna be a tricky one to get out of. But, even if Colo issues a statement to the effect that he’s under contract and will commit his every effort to Newcastle United, I feel that his behaviour, for whatever reason, has not been appropriate for a club captain. That being so, the least the club should do is strip him of the captaincy and if neccessary, drop him – his heart’s not with us! 👿 🙁

      (Quote)

  15. That letter is a PR stunt to save face for the San Fairy Ann board and Colo’s dad.

Their fans must be thinking: are we r un by mad men?

      (Quote)

  16. Why do people doubt it COULD be from Colo himself – because of the backlash?! 😕
This is the same man who’s ‘personal problems’ stem from him having an affair – is that the actions of a bloke who seriously considers ‘backlashes’ ???
Seriously – how long did it take for him to commit to a new contract last season?. The likes of Sissoko snubbed his sign on fee because he was that committed to joining us.
Why is it that Cptn Colo has a light shining from his ****?!

      (Quote)

  17. Like I said yesterday, he has lost my respect whether its true or not. If it isn’t he should come out and say so and stop letting his dad/some random argies run their mouths off and ruin his reputation.

As he hasn’t, I can only assume its true, and I have plenty of words for what that would make him…

      (Quote)

  18. Well I said yesterday I ain’t happy with it ,if it’s true and as I said you’d think we had him handcuffed and bound not playing on a lucrative contract. He’s getting on my nerves a bit now and it’s all a figgin mess , we’ll have to sell him come summer ,hopefully a rich Argie club come in for him and he can go home.

      (Quote)

  19. My thoughts???

Simple, don’t expect too much of South American players to stay in europe. 😉

Is their so called destiny to end their career back in their country.

      (Quote)

  20. SHARPY17 i doubt he even thought about a backlash while he was dropping his pants and giving some lass a rodgering .The thing is now its come to light he thought he could get out of the club and thats backfired hopelessly . Lets be honest though once the crowd starts turning on him he is going to start wondering wtf did i do , as for me if Taylor is fit i would play him and the new CB and strip colo of the captaincy .Trouble is i think PARDEW thinks the sun shines out of colos **** as well .

      (Quote)

  21. Colo will be gone asap, and as i’ve said previously , – before a certain due date.

If I was in this position and my wife was 7000 miles away , I’d sleep easier keeping that distance. 🙂

      (Quote)

  22. im not to sure what to think of the whole situation, im getting abit tired of the press claiming all the toon fans are foaming, i have no idea what to be foaming about, is his wife ill? has she just left him? has he got himself into a spot of bother he wants to run away from?

if his wife was so ill, was it sensible to get on a plane for 13 hrs.

im just saying. bit more to this than home sick or his wife being ill, seen no reports out of Argentina or San laz papers on Colo’s Wife, now if that was shearer’s wife im sure there would be something in the cronnie.

      (Quote)

  23. Axel – (just incase this reads wrong, I’m not arguing with ya 😉 ) But what he did was save himself a £7m law suit by agreeing to stay. This letter was a please don’t forget me in the summer.
As a few have already said, if he was committed to our battle he’d have been at that press conference with Pardew to show a unity.
I don’t think he gave a ***** about the consequences of this letter coming out, the only thing on his mind was keeping his dream move alive.

      (Quote)

  24. He would have the full sympathy of most Toon fans if his wife were ill and even if he had to go be by her side ,who would complain. What makes the whole thing murky as hell is the San Lorenzo link with his dad ,convieniently offering him a new club should he go home 🙄 . Nah ,don’t believe the illness line for a minute really don’t. He’s played away and now want’s to play away ,pardon the pun. 😉

      (Quote)

  25. Yeah i agree with all that SHARPY17 he never saw that 7 million law suit coming , i think the best for all would be for us too now circulate his availability too all clubs in Argentina ,surly Boca Juniors or River plate would be interested , we could bring in another CB before Thursday .

      (Quote)

  26. If things don’t look up for us in say the next 5 matches, would we boot pards or strip Colo I wonder… 😕

      (Quote)

  27. easy. NO.

I think that beautiful hair has got him into bother, well we will just have to wait and see if anyone we know pops out a mini wig with arms and legs.

hang on, my wifes pregnant,…………..GEEEEEETTT IN.

      (Quote)

  28. I think it has something to do with his father and not Colo directly.
But his absolute silence on the whole issue truely stinks.
I really dont want this to get any further out of hand and I dont want to see and hear my fellow fans booing him or giving him grief. That wont achieve anything either. Its obvious we will let him go at the end of the season. Probably for nowt too, which is a ridiculous situation to find ourselves in.
What is annoying me mostly tho, is that the club is drifting from one mini crisis to another. Ba n Cisse, and now Colo. who’s next ❓ Jonas most likely, once he sees how easily Colo gets away 😕
All bad PR for the club 👿

      (Quote)

  29. Reading are going after Tom Ince?! 😯

Report suggests £7-8m – would that be a better option that £12m for Bony? – 20yr old Englishman, quick and can score goals, can play wide and upfront.

      (Quote)

  30. Worse still is that we cant really blame the regime for this debacle, it seems to be all Colo’s doing.

      (Quote)

  31. Its all well and good threatening him with a £7M lawsuit, but what good does that do us when we have an unhappy player left on our books. ❓
Stripping him of the captaincy just makes the situation worse too.
He literally has us over a barrel

      (Quote)

  32. BB – I think the fans will only boo him if he shows a lack of commitment ON the pitch. If he shows that he’s in this battle 100% then we daft buggers will probs continue to sing his name.

What disappoints me most is that this wasn’t Shola instead of Colo. Then she could name the bairn CRAMEOBI 😛 😆

      (Quote)

  33. I have even seen rumours of colo having an affair resulting his wife knowing it and brought the kids back to argentina.

As a result, a mess in his life now.

      (Quote)

  34. Aod @43 ,Yes that’s the rumour but who knows the real truth 😉 ,I don’t think his wife is ill ,reckon that’s a cover story.

      (Quote)

  35. colo will give 100% to toon! willo, santon and simpson have been under achieving this season! why is santon in midfield when he should be defending? he is the reason we leak goals. they probably tested his patients and he has had enough of them. pardrew has no excuse now and ashley know it!

      (Quote)

  36. I think the letter is from his camp otherwise the club would be all over it saying it is a fake. I am glad he will be here till the end of the season though and will wish him all the best when he does leave.

    @39

The fact you are comparing Ince with Bony shows how much people over-rate English/British players. Bony is twice the player Ince will ever be

      (Quote)

  37. i have never seen bony play, so i cant rate him but i think its all speculation. i wish colo all the best when he leaves. a true gent! if his compared to o martins then no thx. just pace and misses, we need a out and out scorer

      (Quote)

  38. Liverpool losing 3-1 lol

    @Terry

I would like PEA or RVW. I don’t think the Bony rumour is true at all either

      (Quote)

  39. My Brother does aswell he was around last night bragging about suarez and how they are going to win about 5-0. For some reason he isnt answering my texts 😀

      (Quote)

  40. not bothered by the letter. Either it’s true or it isn’t. What matters is his performances on the pitch. For that we will have to wait and see.

      (Quote)

  41. Well, after all of the poor performances from Premier League clubs this weekend, where are all the folk who were going mental at our 2nd string being knocked out away to Brighton?

      (Quote)

  42. The Kid,
I see Arsenal had a job on their hands getting past Brighton at the Amex, they are a good little football team. Arsenal have whooped some prem teams but they couldn’t do that to Brighton.

      (Quote)

  43. The Kid-Ayup. Good times. I was hardly embarrassed by that, brighton favourites for me. But some of these results, truly good fun 😀

      (Quote)

  44. Allen scored his 1st Liverpool goal against League 1 Oldham and a Liverpool fan commented on the BBC score update that he could be the next Lampard.

      (Quote)

  45. I think the best result of the weekend was QPR getting hammered by MK Dons and they have City next aswell. 😀

      (Quote)

  46. Ice
That will benefit us if we take off with our new signings. With a more solid defence, full strength attack and passing football we can move on up. If teams above us slip up then we can potentially still get into the top half.

      (Quote)

  47. AOD@43 from what I’ve seen in life putting your tadger where it doesn’t belong is an expensive affair, both spiritually and financially. If it’s true what’s being rumoured, for Collo it aint gonna be any different 🙁

      (Quote)

  48. I don’t think there is anymore players to come in,some of the players talked in the papers is just that talk,IMO its a bellemy. type player we should be looking at

      (Quote)

  49. Looking at Pards interview in the Mirror, I don’t think he’s gonna play many Newbies on tuesday. He’s said the new players are here to strengthen and let the players know that if they fail to perform they could lose their shirt 😕 Please Pards I beg you do not start with Wilo ,Jonas or Shola ,we need to have a full 11 with noone coming along for the ride ffs ,it’s Villa ,we must go for it.

      (Quote)

  50. Batts I knew you would agree with me 😉

Kim I wouldn’t really read much into what Pards said he is always trying that one only for players to play, I think he says it to try to fool the opposition 😉

      (Quote)

  51. I’m dissapointed with him anyway, regardless if this was his letter or not. We need leaders and our captain certainly needs a leader he he has proved he isn’t. His form has been pathetic and now we know why. He doesn’t want to be here so its beyond me why he is still captain.

      (Quote)

  52. Big D@72, not only has Pards fooled the opposition with his crack, he’s obviously fooled his own team quite a lot this season. 😆
