Ton-up Pardew still has work to do

100 games in charge for Pardew.
100 games in charge for Pardew.
Alan Pardew celebrated his 100th game in charge of Newcastle United last night with a much needed win over struggling Aston Villa.

However if you look at his record during his time at United you will see there is still plenty of room for improvement for the former Reading, West Ham and Southampton manager.

The stats will show that Alan Pardew has guided his team to victory on 37 occasions, overseen defeat in 36 matches with the other 27 fixtures ending in a draw leaving his with a winning percentage of 37%. I’m not going to compare his winning percentage to different former United managers as we’re in different times with very different circumstances to previous managers.

Just to give a quick example, people will instantly drag up Chris Hughton and his record without mentioning that the vast majority of his games were played in the second tier of football. Kevin Keegan also has the benefit of playing some games in the second tier. It’s hard to compare different people, different personnel, different owners and different times using just a statistic.

In defence of Pardew though, even thought the stats aren’t that good, there have been mitigating circumstances. I’m not making excuses for the man as he is perfectly capable of doing that himself, but the things that stick our for me are having to play for half a season without a striker thanks to the sale of Andy Carroll, plus there is this season where a bit of motivation from the board in the summer would have seen us higher up the league than what we sit currently.

However this isn’t purely a defence of Pardew and there are many areas where he can improve upon. It’s just important to remember that he can only really work with what he is dealt and I have the feeling that will be the same for any manager that is employed under Mike Ashley.

Certain tactical decisions have left me wondering what is going on and some substitutions have been worrying, but then I don’t proclaim to be a tactics guru like most other people seem to be and I’ve not played Football Manager in years so perhaps it’s just something I’m not seeing. They are the kind if decisions that get praised when they work and the team is winning but get questioned when circumstances are reversed.

So in summary his first 100 games aren’t bad, but there is definite room for improvement which will hopefully come now we have a squad with some quality and depth in it.

This team has potential, it’s now up to Pardew to help realise it.

  1. Take the last dozen games out of the equation and he then has quite a decent record, but there is no point looking at his first 100 games, what is important now is his next 100 games, now that he has a better squad he has no excuse for not improving his record, which I feel he will

  2. Without talking about other managers. Pardew has shown that last season, with top players available to him and in form, like HBA and Cabaye, he did well. We had a bit of luck about us and the wind in our sails. This season we saw that without the magical players that can win us games, we have struggled tactically to overcome opponents. But I don’t think Pardew is here because he is a tactical expert, Pardew is here because he is a PR man, a mouthpiece for our low-key chairman and anonymous Owner.

  3. Firstly – congratulations to Alan Pardew for a ton of toon games.
I think slant is right to highlight the last 10-12 games as Pardew didn’t have close to the squad of players he’d have liked to have thanks to injuries. However he is now starting to get those back in Saylor, Cabaye, Raylor back in training and Benny not far away. The new recruits will give him more options, but I think further recruits are needed – ideally now for a CF, if not then certainly in the summer.
I think the good thing for Pardew now is that he can play players in their favoured positions now.
He also has cover for all positions, so if he gets selections or formations wrong its down to his decision making rather than lack of alternatives.

With this squad and the addition of a CF I fancy his win rate increasing to around 42-44% over his next 100 matches. If not, Ashley may need to rethink things.

  4. We all expected Cabaye to play an advanced role last night with Sissoko behind him, Pardew suprised us all and reversed them, it caught Villa by suprise which enabled us to race into a 2 goal lead which proved to be enough to win the game, that was a very good tactical decision, but no one mentions that, all they do is concentrate on the negatives and the ineffective Shola.

      (Quote)

  5. DJG – excellent point re Pardew being good PR man.

Slant – I posted pre game that I would have had Perch and Jonas sitting midfield with Gouffran Sissoko and Cabaye left to right behind Cisse.

  6. Think win % stats for managers are misleading. It is dependent on so many factors that you can’t necessarily get a gauge on what it says about the manager.

For eg Pards has had some bad form recently but excelled last year. Neither season makes him a bad nor great manager. I think in the end he is a steady pair of hands. He is an average manager who had a great season. In the end that’s what most managers are. There are only a few really GREAT managers and none of them are available right now. That’s why I think Pardew is the best man for the job though that might change with a new owner or if there were a great talent out there.

The last thing I’ll say is that at least we are having some consistency right now after years of chopping and changing. Think that is essential for any manager. To talk about how great Moyes is you need to remember all the times it would have been easier for Everton to sack him in his early days or even in recent seasons when they’ve started badly.

Very capable indeed….and iquite good at it…

  8. See Flauvin ended up joining Lille while Bony’s agent is still talking up a deal. We could still use an attacking option but I think we’re done for the window.

On topic of the window who is better value Samba at 10m or MYM at 6m?

      (Quote)

  9. SJP14, I like nice easy questions like that, MYM is a younger player, a cheaper player, and most importantly a better player, so obviously the answer is not Samba, having said that, I do rate Samba and with Colo almost certain to leave in the summer, I would not have turned my nose up at the idea of Samba being his replacement

      (Quote)

  10. Slant, I was kind of being sarcastic but it does really show the value available in the French league. Samba is a quality player and I would have been happy to sign him but when you include wages etc it ends up being so prohibitively more expensive for a team like us.

Seems like ‘Arry going through his usual tricks- putting 2 keepers on the bench last night and moaning about lack of depth. Can’t believe the press don’t see through it. QPR have a huge expensive squad already. Really hope they go down.

      (Quote)

  11. Pardew taken over the whole 100 games to me looks adequate but no more. He appeared to be out-managed in the second half against Villa as they made the changes necessary to get back into the game. We brought in Shola? and put Mbiwa in a very awkward position for him for the last 15 minutes? This isn’t the first time Pardew has made strange subs, in fact it happens frequently. On the other hand he did make use of Sissoko well in the first half. Surely we can play an entire 90 minute game though? We will have to against our next 2 opponents. Where was Marveaux by the way. He would have been a better impact sub.

      (Quote)

  12. Harry has too be very careful, after the cup humiliation he used that defeat as proof of how bad his squad is, having a go at players publicly to try and buck their ideas up is one thing, but if you do it too often it could backfire, I no that I would not want to play for a manager who is constantly slagging me off in public, to me I feel his pathetic rants at his players could back fire, I hope it does, as I would also love to see them go down

      (Quote)

  13. Sjp14 @8 ,As Samba can play CB or attacker he would be a good buy at 10m ,you effectivly have two players for that price depending what your needs are and he’s PL proven too ,always a bonus. MYM is younger and probably better too to be fair though it’s true.

Re Pards ,I would say he’s an average manager ,he’s no sir Bob or KK but that is only my opinion. He did very well last year but his subs and the timing of them baffle me at times. 😕

      (Quote)

  14. Slant @12 ,I agree thought he went over the top in an attempt to force the owners hand to buy more personel. That’s a typical Harry move at every club he goes to.

      (Quote)

  15. Thanks Slant and Kimtoon. A pity about Marveaux as he has been in fine form lately. Typical for us I guess. Get a player on a decent run of games and he gets hurt in training. 👿

      (Quote)

  16. We should take no notice of Harry. He blathers on and on. There he is saying how terrible it is during the window and he’s the worst of all, stealing players with ridiculous offers that will be a huge detriment to his own club eventually. Look at Portsmouth. Still in tatters, thanks in large part to good old Harry.

      (Quote)

  17. G2 ,If he gets Samba it will be a good signing I reckon .He’ll have 2 positions covered and no worries about him adapting to the PL either. Remy didn’t look too hot last night though from the hi-lites I watched

      (Quote)

  18. Off topic but what happened to Yven Moyo. Notice he wasn’t in U21 squad today neither was Mehdi Abeid. Both of those players were lauded as being bright prospects but haven’t really pushed on. That is one of the things which worry about me with Pardew. In his 100 games have any young players made a breakthrough? I guess Fergie is closest.

      (Quote)

  19. If Samba has a relegation clause in his contract like Remy does, then we may be able to steal him off Harry in the summer, now that would be nice

      (Quote)

  20. Good point Kim about Samba. He can slot straight into a Premier League team and that will definitely him QPR. Didn’t watch the highlights but hope Remy is misfiring.

      (Quote)

  21. SJP14, I don’t think Pardew is the problem, I just don’t think the young uns are good enough, Fergie, Sammy and Abied have all failed to improve, I can’t see any of them making it, Bigirimana is the only one who I feel has the ability to make the grade

      (Quote)

  22. @20. I remember reading a rumor on one of the sites that the club was trying to loan both of them to Ligue 1 clubs. Never heard anything more about it though

      (Quote)

  23. So QPR getting Samba now as well…they deserve to go down more than Villa…tho I’d gladly see them both rot. 😉

      (Quote)

  24. Samba may have played in the PL but he’s coming from a much lesser league and it will take him afew games to catch up. I’m not sure he’s THAT good in all honesty, think it was more he shone in a poor Bburn team, similar to Hoilett who hasn’t done a great deal at QPR either. He’s better than what they currently have, but £10m? Nah.
Just shows how cute our board has been when you look at the players QPR are linked with and the money they are supposedly spending – only for them to go down anyway 😆

      (Quote)

  25. Think its a combnation of players not been good enough and coaching not up to scratch. I see Liam Brady is steepping down from his role Arsenal would be a coup if we got him to oversee youth development.
Think Pardew has done good in his first 100 games. Some up’s and down’s but Im confident and optimistic going forward. Think he has learned more this season about the current squad than he did the season before. The real test for him , imo , is can he turn it around? Well so far so good in terms of the 5 players he got in but still a lot of work to do and I think he will do it

      (Quote)

  26. “and I’ve not played Football Manager in years”

Well there is your downfall toonsy, now if you’d like to leave all tactical discussions to those who currently own FM13 I would be grateful…Also I pick up loads of great tips from .com, they have some wonderbrains over there. Wonder where that guy who said Ranger would be our Messi is nowadays…. 🙄

Pards is a run of the mill manager really. His record aint that bad and again I’m very wary of comparing records. Let’s face it, if Kinnear had won the F.A cup under us he’d probably be a legend 😀

If he can push us back up the table and stabilise us for next year I’ll be more than happy. Ready for an assault on some silverware next season…tho he’s been less than impressive in our cup ties.

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpy-Agree value wise its an average deal considering what we have Mbiwa for, but he’s still a good player imo, actually dangerous in the opposition box, imagine that 🙄 . Still, he’s a definite upgrade on Anton Ferdinand 😆

      (Quote)

  28. If we can string a few results together in the league and build a gap between us and the bottom 3, then what would stop us from launching an attack on this years Europa league, we cant play, Debuchy, Mbiwa or Gouffran, but with some of the injured players coming back with Sissoko and Haidara, it could be worth playing full strength teams in the cup, provided we can pull away from the drop zone of course

      (Quote)

  29. Newkie – not disputing he’s a decent player, but QPR aren’t struggling coz they lacked Remy and Samba. Similar to us they need 5-6 players to make a difference, now they may get those in the the next 48hrs but thus far they’ve spent £18 (ish) on Remy and Samba. Remy wasn’t playing for Marseille and Samba couldn’t keep Bburn from relegation and jumped before they went down. Now he’s left Anzhi (spelling) and Hidinki has questioned his character as well. Odenwhingey and Crouch will save them tho 😆

      (Quote)

  30. Why not bring up Hughton? His Premier League record at Newcastle is 10 wins, 7 draws, 17 defeats – a win rate of less than 30%. Even if you wash his hands of the results incurred while helping send us down, it’s 9 wins, 5 draws and 10 defeats, or 37%.

      (Quote)

  31. I will only judge the youngsters when I see them play with at least 7 first teamers play with them.

      (Quote)

  32. Sharpy-True, although I think some of the racism in Russia may have affected Samba and if so imo that’s fair enough. They’re pretty fucking mental out there, and yes they’re getting minted playing for Anzhi but with all the air miles and bother involved, he probably reckons its easier and safer just to pick his money up at some shitty minted landan club and I don’t blame him.

Unwise purchases like you say-but imo that’s why they deserve to go down. Spending ridiculous money, plus I’d love to see Arry’s reputation finally tarnished and hopefully consigning him to retirement, until england come calling and he disappoints and fails there as well… 😉

      (Quote)

  33. Still think we should go for a striker before the window closes. We focused on future players again with Haidara but our need for a striker is urgent. Strange way to run things. Don’t think we’ll go down now but is a 12th place finish or lower acceptable after five years with Ashley? I don’t think so. He is still taking huge chances. If Cisse gets hurt we have so little depth. Was looking at Peter’s record with us. He was close to a 1 in 2 scorer with us in all competitions. I realize part of that was in the Champs division but he was much more skillful than Shola. And Best was better than Shola as well and much younger. We can’t sit still with the strikers for much longer.

      (Quote)

  34. Newkie – if those are the reasons for leaving Russia then fair play, but 2 points to that. If he were THAT good, surely he’d have attracted a better club than the one at the foot of the PL.
It can’t bother him that much as he hasn’t pushed for the move away. QPR have activated a release clause, which will probably have a match the salary clause as well – god forbid he should be out of pocket to escape racism.
As for Arry, he won’t be there is QPR go down, that I’m sure of. He’ll leave blaming someone else – probably the board or players for destroying the club.

      (Quote)

  35. G2-In all honesty mate, I think Gouffran could lead the line well. Honestly think a front line of Marv, Gouffran (up top) and Benny on the right, supported by Sissoko and the late runs of cabaye should score all the goals we’ll need even with Cisse injured.

I know what you mean about needing a striker, some aren’t convinced by Cisse-personally I think he’s quite touchy when it comes to competition and needs to be assured he’s the main man. I’d take another versatile striker, but not sure if we need another out and out striker.

At least this way we’re forced to play 4-3-3 to the benefit of most of the team-except perhaps the full backs who took a bit of a battering last night..

      (Quote)

  36. Arry has according too the BBC moved for isiat Mirin the french 21 year old CD we have supposedly scouted ,i swear it the bloke must have Carr followed constantly .

      (Quote)

  37. Sharpy-Aye, there’s no a chance its purely racism orientated, I just get the feeling he’d prefer to be in england and if QPR are willing to offer him enough to come back, not really sure what Anzhi were paying him, but their owner was pretty ridiculous with roberto carlos and with their current trend, i’d be surprised if QPR are offering him more-but who knows?

As for being that good, well, like I said he’s decent but none of the top 4 need him and they’re the only ones bar liverpool who could afford his wages/the fee involved. Plus he’s not going to get better, even if CBs can play longer than most. He’s better than bottom of the prem, but hopefully he won’t be there long.

Should be gracing the championship soon enough 😀

      (Quote)

  38. Our squad is so much better than Villa’s and we should have romped the second half like we did the first. There’s something sadly wrong that we didn’t as we have played bloody awful like that for much of the season. The new players brought a feel good factor, but it quickly evaporated. Pardew has no answers for me.

      (Quote)

  39. Newkie some good comments there @41 mate. I’m hoping Gouffran can come good as well. He showed some flashes in his first game. He does look comfortable on the wing and we do need to replace Obertan. But what about a serious injury to Cisse? It worries me quite a bit. I know we’re not going to spend 15 million on a striker but I think Graham would be a good shout for us. He’s quite versatile and I would hate to see him go to Sunderland. 5 M pounds doesn’t seem too much to me if we could get him for that. We really should be replacing Shola as well by next season. We could keep Shola as a 3rd or 4th choice striker if we have to since Ranger is useless and Xisco is finally gone. Campbell needs playing time with a good Championship side for at least a season.

      (Quote)

  40. Newkie – Lpool was exactly who I was think, them and Arsenal I suppose. Lpool need a replacement for Carragher and the gunners have afew CBs but only Verm who I’d say is any good really.
Re Ba, I someone on twitter. Funny how those who have been ***** for us leave without comment. Ba scores goals and leaves for a bigger club with a chance of winning trophies and gets grief – bet Xisco doesn’t get tweeted by these clowns 🙄

      (Quote)

  41. B&B @46 the subs and formation change that Lambert made in the second half were excellent. Bringing in Agbonlahor and Weimman added a huge amount of pace to their attack and Bent wasn’t doing anything at all. Whereas Pardew’s subs showed signs of panic again. He has too much faith in Jonas and Shola who haven’t played well all season. Leave both of them on the bench and focus on the more skilled younger players Pardew.

      (Quote)

  42. the crack is graham does not want to go to scum 😯 ,and everton have defo pulled out of deal for Fer he has a demba type knee injury everton still wanted him if they could pay in instalments on games played but its a no go

      (Quote)

  43. G2 – Was it Pardew’s plan to have 11 defenders with Shola playing as an additional centre back? 🙄

Was it deliberate on his part or did the players simply not listen to him? 😥 Can’t believe that’s in any book of football tactics? Not even Bris’. 😆

      (Quote)

  44. Aye B&B @52 considering the first half we played and the lead away from home the team looked very unsettled in the second half and Pardew didn’t appear to be in control. How will he handle playing Chelsea next? What kind of formation will he have to offer? My bet is he will field the same starting 11 if he can as he always does so after a win. Cabaye was kicked around quite a bit and I worry about him for the weekend but we need him in there badly. Shocking difference in play from us in the two halves as with many other games this season.

      (Quote)

  45. B&B — are you criticising our master tactition?

Who else would have brought Shola on as an extra CB – (in fact , who else would have brought Shola on at all ), and then brought Mbiwa on ,as the fourth CB.?
Mbiwa had to move forward to play in midfield, a position he has probably never played. He should have been told to play RB with Debuchy moved to RM.
Pardew not the man for me , but we will have him for a few years yet. At least he can only improve.

      (Quote)

  46. Sky Tyne and Wear rekon we are after loaning Gameiro with an option to buy in the summer probably bull **** but that would be a good move.

      (Quote)

  47. Such a worry that we didn’t continue to push up in the second half. And we daren’t fall behind either because we can’t recover. Maybe all that will change now with a stronger squad. I see the reserves played poorly again and lost 3-0. What a strange season after all the swelled heads last year and all the claims by Ashley that he was going to rebuild us from the bottom up. I see very little sign of it in all honesty. Good is playing well and so is Inman on loan. Next year might be their time to fit into the 25 man squad. I don’t think some of the others will make it sadly although I haven’t given up on Fergie. He still has promise with that left foot of his.

      (Quote)

  48. Well Pardew has made it past the 2.1 year mark despite the cold draught predicting he would be sacked. 😛

    Close the windows Toonsy. 😆

      (Quote)

  49. So hopefully Southampton lose as do Reading. Given our upcoming 2 games we should still be outside the bottom 3 by the time we play saints. That will be an absolutely massive game.

Think we will sneak a draw at the weekend but can only see us losing at Spurs.

      (Quote)

  50. West Ham losing too Fulham 1-0 , fat sham’s side are on the slide as well mind , could see them been dragged into the relegation dog fight .

      (Quote)

  51. g2@48-I know what you mean, I really do worry about Cisse getting injured the moment the window closes as well 😕 I think Graham is a decent player and would compliment Cisse, but I’m not sure he’s “the next level.” From what I hear he’d only like to leave so that he could play first team, and I’m not sure I’d want us back with 4-4-2 to be honest. 4-3-1-2 or some such variation with Benny in the hole would have been good-particularly as our full backs can provide great width now.

But we have so many winger type players now in Gouffran, Marv and Benny (til now) that it seems 4-3-3 in the mould of last year will be used. Will Graham want to come to sit on the bench with us til Cisse gets injured?..

      (Quote)

  52. Sharpy-yeah, people can get really pathetic when it comes to leaving. Fair enough being upset about it but there’s no need to bring race into it 😕
