£11 million – The price of saving a season?

Sissoko - Our latest bargain bin buy
Sissoko – Our latest bargain bin buy
I wrote an article yesterday praising the competition for places we now have within the squad.

For me it’s better late than never as we should have strengthened more in the summer, but at least we’ve not left it until next summer when it might have been too late.

Today I’m going to praise the actual business that we managed to “get over the line” in January. It was fantastic and the players we’ve brought in for the fees paid are exceptional. Obviously they are all officially undisclosed fees, so I’m just using the most commonly speculated fees to get to the figure spent by United. It’s not precise but by the same token it won’t be far off.

The best piece of business so far looks to be the addition of Moussa Sissoko. For a fee reported to be in the region of £1.8 million we’ve already had a return of two goals and one assist from his two matches to date. Not just that, but it also looks like there is more to come from the former Toulouse man who has the energy and presence to drive the team on.

Mathieu Debuchy cost around £5.5 million after arriving from Lille. He’s going to be our first-choice right-back and he looks like a good player. He can get forward and support the attack and can also do the dirty job of defending although he still looks like he needs a bit more time to fully adjust to life in the Premier League.

Yoan Gouffran cost under £1 million and has been a revelation. A striker with not a great striking record, Gouffran has shown pace, desire, trickery and a willingness to work for the team in his two appearances to date. He’s also grabbed himself one assist.

Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa we haven’t seen too much of, mainly because Steven Taylor and Fabricio Coloccini have hit top form since his arrival. I guess that is what competition for places does for you! However whilst he hasn’t featured much I have a suspicion he will do when he finally gets the chance. He’s been highly rated by enough people and at roughly £6.5 million looks like a potential bargain when you look at his age, experience and the kind of clubs who were after him.

Two younger players, more for the future, were also added in January. Massadio Haidara and Kevin Mbabu will both be ones to watch although Haidara could step into the first-team in event of an injury crisis which is always handy. The two cost under £2 million combined.

Of course we lost Demba Ba, which was always on the cards, especially when Chelsea came calling, so when you take the money received for Ba and take it off the cost of our new guys it means we’ve laid out about £11 million. Yes we’ve lost Ba’s goals but to me we look a better team without him.

Being honest it’s not my money and I don’t really care how much players cost as long as they are quality and can add to the team. On that score it seems as though it’s job done on our part. To get them at such low cost is just a bonus which makes our recruitment look good.

£11 million it may have cost, but you can’t put a price on picking up points.

  1. Toonsy, good read. Got to say looks like we have bagged a few bargain buys for sure ,hats off to the board and Carr albeit late in the day. Sissoko will be worth megabucks if he carries on like he started come summer/next jan ,I can see lots of the big boys after him,we may have a job keeping hold of him . At some point we have to keep hold of players like Sissoko ,Benny ,and the like as it’s the only way we will win anything or make top4 . I know Jabba likes to make money on his buys but what’s the point of being a football club if we don’t compete to win something and you only do that with a good squad . So I’m happy with the business we did but really hope it’s with the desire to win and compete rather than all about making money . 😉

  2. lets not go ovverboard, Spurs will be a tough test on Sat and given our league position shouldn’t expect to get anything – I’d have snapped your hand off if you said take 6 points out of villa, chelski and spurs so owt else is a bonus – think we could sneak a win or a draw though.
I imagine Spurs coach all over youtube trying to find out about Gouffran, Sissoko 🙂

  3. I’m gonna record the game and watch it on sunday/monday as looks like Lews op will go ahead on friday and I will be in hospital over weekend with him . Typical it’s on TV when we are away 🙄 , still hopefully Lew will be healthier after his op along with our team now we have newbies 😀 Gonna predict a draw saturday.

  4. Stevep , Reckon the Spuds defence might be bricking it a little over the thought of faceing Sissoko in full flight 😈

  5. Toonsy good read and I agree we have picked up a few cracking players for very little money, and I suppose the Regime have to be given credit for it, but imo we should have brought them in in the summer, and we might have been in the top 6 so will the money we saved be the same as what we might loss in the final standings in the prem this season.
Also I have no doubt what so ever that we wouldn’t have brought most of these players in if we hadn’t been deep in the **** at the bottom end of the table.
But as you say better late than never, and atleast now it means we can get excited watching the team play again.

  6. hats off to the board and everyone else involved in getting the deals done, good value yet again and what look like great players who have bought into the clubs philosophy.

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned too much though is the return of le wizard, Ben Arfa. I bet he is as excited at playing with this team as we are to watch them. He questioned the boards ambition in January lets hope they have done enough to keep him happy as with him, we could really push on next season.

  7. “For me it’s better late than never as we should have strengthened more in the summer, but at least we’ve not left it until next summer when it might have been too late.”

I don’t subscribe to the above. To follow the argument that it’s better late than never, Ashley should have bought last season or the season before that. These things take time. How would you feel if you’d worked hard, saved up, and spent money on your garden as when you could afford it, doing a great job of getting out of season bargains, only for someone to come along and say you should have done it much sooner? Also, with the squad we had at the start of the season, we might not have been top four, but we should have been top half. It should never have been the case that we had to buy now because of the threat of relegation!

  9. Aussie ,Thanks ,be glad when it’s over ,really nervous for him.

Rambo87@10 ,Yeah ,hopefully Benny will be much happier with our recent buys. We MUST get him signed up to a contract extention asap as he only has two years left I think ,possibly less.

Hoping for a solid end to the season, a top half finish, a european run and watching vile join the fizzy pop oblivion where nee fecker can hear them scream… 😈 😈

and I suppose the Regime have to be given credit for it,

That must have stuck in ya throat buddy 😆

I posted yday that I think the board took a calculated risk in the summer that may just pay off. I don’t think they couldn’t be arsed not to buy in the summer, they just believed that if they waited til Jan they would get better players for their money. It’s this whole self surficient policy. We would have £20m to spend every transfer window so it’s about being penny wise, but if you look at how Ashley has made his billions, he’s good at that. That said, I don’t think even he and Dekka thought for a second that they would have had such a successful week of transfers.

Before B&B starts, yes I would have liked to have see another CF in in jan. But Pardew has acknowledged we are too light in that positions and that we are working on identify the right player to bring in in the summer – that’s better than nowt I suppose. As is the report suggesting we are looking to sign 5-6 players in the summer. That’s 2-3 more than I expected, but if we loose Simmo, Harper and Ranger – having already released Xisco, then that may be about right.

      (Quote)

  12. Those 5 or 6 in the summer ,how many are for development I wonder . If Colo goes then one will have to be a first teamer likewise if Tiote goes ,so 2 for first team 2 to 3 for development I would say.

      (Quote)

  13. B&B – of course you are entitled to your opinion mate, but I don’t know if you were watching SSN on deadline day. Incase you didn’t, David Craig spoke with Dekka at the training ground where he confirmed we had finished for this window. In the same interview he said himself that maybe we made a mistake in the summer by not getting more bodies in. So perhaps Mike and Dekka weren’t entirely chuffed with how the garden grew either.

      (Quote)

  14. Sharpy to be honest mate no, I really don’t mind giving credit where it’s due, but at the sametime if they don’t deserve it then they don’t get it, even if they have done well in the past.
Pretty much the same as the players, if they do well they get the applause but if the’re **** then they deserve stick.

B+B you don’t subscribe to that ? Good for you I won’t hold it against you.

  15. On paper it was a gamble by ashley really letting Ba go but I think his attitude was starting to shine through he never was a team player but he kept banging in the goals.

Chelsea was to big a move to turn down and I think in the long run not having two ACON strikers will benefit us massively. (Thats if senegal qualify again!)

Ashley is laughing really he has paid a small amount now but will be rolling in dough come summer with that new SKY deal 😎

      (Quote)

  16. Strumpo on the previous thread: “B&B are you still going on about the manager? You’re reason for wanting Pardew gone was that you claimed history shows managers only have two and a bit years. Well history shows that we have gone for managers that have zero stock – in Kinnear, Hughton, Pardew. Why don’t you grow a pair and admit you jumped the gun on wanting Pardew sacked.”

Lets get this clear once and for all. I have never called for Pardew to be sacked so “two and a bit years” could never be my reason for it! One or two numpties have tried to misrepresent me on that because they’ve got nowt else to cling onto. They do it all the time and I’m surprised you’re not alert to that.

I PREDICTED that Pardew will be sacked long before his eight year contract expires because, other than in rare cases where the manager is exceptional, it is a basic fact of football. One of the tools of prediction was the average duration of managers. That is one of the reasons I was predicting he’d be sacked sooner rather than later. If Ashley had not bailed Pardew out big time and we had lost the last two instead of won them that would have been the case, almost spot on.

I don’t believe Pardew has the credentials and he has shown that. However, as the current encumbent, and a generally likeable, hard working sort of bloke, I believe he deserves a chance unless it looks like he’s going to take us down. Before the recent cash splurge it , that’s what it was looking like. Only an idiot of manager could contrive to take that squad down. The fans will soon get sick of his under-achievement IMO. Give him time. I hope I am wrong and he can win the Europa Cup for us. I bought my ticket yesterday.

People may not share that view, but I don’t consider it’s not a valid one. It’s certainly not worthy of constant carping ridicule from a lonely train driver and his sidekick stoker.

Its certainly stand up to scrutiny better than:

“We couldn’t better manager in the whole world than Pardew whilst ashley is here.”

“Although if it’s looking like relegation sack him and get another manager even though I believe in long term stability and eight year contracts.”

“Ashley treats managers, players and fans like dirt.”

You will note the sidekick corporal quickly deflected the argument from those embarrassing points onto whether you, Strumpo, were a valid passenger on his reality train, even calling me “deluded” to suggets you might be! Even Rodz late night express has more of a grip on reality.

  18. Sharpy @ 17 – Spot on. They were relying on the head gardener to tell them how the plants were going to grow. They are not gardeners themselves and never claim to be. The head gardener was more than happy with his stock of plants and seeds in the summer and made the claim that anything else would just be the icing on the cake. Within a few months he had completely changed his assessment of what was going to flower and presented his disappointing and unexpected brief to the board. I’m sure that won’t go unnoticed. Highly embarrassing! 😳

      (Quote)

  19. I am a support of the board and I thought we ‘d have in last summer to see us through the season and clearly so did the board. I get a feeling Pardew wasnt but knew his hand were tied and no other choice but to go along with it. I was wrong and clearly the board were as well. We stood still last summer and have paid the price. Fair play to the board they have held up their hands and then proceeded to stick their hands in their pocket and sign the players we needed. Yes it should of been done last summer but I wonder how much we would of had to pay for the same players last summer? An extra £10 million? 15 maybe?

      (Quote)

  20. Sharpy @ 15 – That all sounds fine to me. I agree with most of it. 😀
When you’re doing a project as big as this there has got to be some gambling. Sometimes it doesn’t work, you’ve done the right thing, but you get unlucky. Hopefully, we’ll avoid relegation because Ashley deserves a break for his courage.

B&B – I think your dislike of Pardew may well be getting in the way of reality mate. I can’t disagree that Pardew said he was happy to go with what he had. But he was hardly likely to come out and say ‘the board have let me and the fans down by failing to secure new recruits’ was he?!. He and his scouting team DID identify new players, in the shape of Debuchy, De Jong, Anita, Douglas and Amalfitano. Are we really to believe that the Dr Jong or Debuchy deal didn’t happen in the summer coz Pardew rang Mike and Dekka and said ‘actually, save ya money lads, I’m happy to go with what we have’. Before you answer that, you should know that Dekka also said that “we perhaps should have tried harder to get player in, and that’s our fault, but hopefully we have put afew things right this week and learned afew lessons”.
Pardew is far from the best manager/coach in the league, but if the board aren’t backing him (by their own admission) then it makes his job evermore difficult.

  23. B&B – my comments at 15 are obviously my views on the situation and yes, I think when you are trying to be self surficient but also compete in the EPL there has to be an element of gamble and risk taking. I don’t mind that, so long as its addressed at the soonest possible opportunity – which is what the board have done – and done superbly well I might add. I think most on here acknowledge that.
I’ve never really had that big a problem with these lot, but there actions in this window and hearing Dekka admit to David Craig they made a mistake in the Summer, actually respect for that. We all make mistakes, but they seem to try and fix theirs and have the clubs best interest in mind, that’s all I ask. I don’t expect them on SSN begging forgiveness for their wrong doing.

  26. its great we have some good palyers in now and some competition for places in soime areas. If AP manages to use the players at his disposal correctly we shouldclimb the league and be safe. It’s only two games so farv so there is no point in everyone trying to suck dekka and ashley off.
This should have been done ages and ages ago and we should not be in a relegation fight. We should and could have built on last seasons amazing place but itstead they sat back and let it go off the rails again. Fat Mike and Dekka without a doubt hit the panic button to save their own pockets from relegation.. and it looks like it may work. That does not mean we should give them credit. Credit for what… for stopping being wankas for five minutes? All this window proved was that their skint flint fly by the seat of their pants attitude of no player investment was on the verge of falling appart. Makes you laugh though.. one minute AP is saying is very hard to get players over the line, blah blah, waffle waffle.. then within a week they have signed **** loads.. just shows that its not hard at all.

  30. Aussie@2-I can’t believe Ash stitched us up again by signing these useless crocks, I tell you we’d be near top of the league right now if we’d bought a reliable player like Remy ❗

  31. And good read ToonzE, Sissoko just looks a beast, it’s crazy as well that here was a position we were fairly well stocked in yet he already looks to have transformed the side. Big shout out to gouffran though, unsung hero against Chelsea and hopefully he can bag himself a goal soon.

      (Quote)

  32. As for why we waited, there’s a few reasons with money (i.e it’d be cheaper in Jan) being the main one.

Personally I think we checked out a lot of these players during the summer and perhaps asked what sort of deal they’d like, had Carr scrutinise them a bit more from august-december, and then moved in for the kill in Jan because everything seems to move a lot quicker in this window. It also meant that potential rivals (notably, Arsenal) had little time to react and contact their scouts/players agents/work out a strategy-meaning we could get a deal sorted quickly without outside interference. At least that’s the impression I get from Wenger who clearly wanted one of these lads and was throwing his toys out of the pram because he didn’t have the balls to get them earlier or in the summer.

      (Quote)

  33. Newkie – Wenger is also scared of losing to our reinforced team. He had a cry about how some teams played us twice before we got the new lads in.

Next thing he’ll want legbreakers sent around to level up the injury situation. 🙄

      (Quote)

  34. Craig – to clear some of these ‘likes’ up:

    Newcastle have played 25 league games, won = 7. Drew = 6. Lost = 12. Goals for = 33. Goals against = 44. Goal difference = -11. Total points = 27. League position = 15th.

    Compared to:

    QPR have played 25 league games, won = 2. Drew = 11. Lost = 12. Goals for = 18. Goals against = 37. Goal difference = -19. Total points = 17. Current league position 20th (bottom).

QPR have spent around £50m and brought in 28 players in the last 2 seasons.
The point I’m trying to make mate is that spending money and signing players does equal stability or even improvement. It’s about a long term plan. Knowing the players you want and getting them when you can. It’s about patience mate. It’s never always going to go to plan but as for heading in the right direction, well I think we’re doing that we just may not be travelling as quickly as you’d like.

  39. Toonsy: Article suggestion……

I was thinking the other day about how Anita must feel at the moment, he came in to a winning team that has done nothing but lose, he then gets dropped and we win 2 in a row. I know its not been his fault, and I imagine he is one the happiest at the new boys arriiving.

Think back to the Summer, he was our only senior player to join us and i think too much was expected of him. I feel that his contribution hasnt been what it could of been; certainly not what I EXPECTED.

That’s my point. He had so much attention/focus on him straight away with fans thinking: what is he going to add to us? who will he replace?

I remember, initially, the crowd treating the lad fairly harshly aswell, booing loose passes and decisions. All because the lad had too much pressure on him coming in on his own, with everyone watching just him as oppposed to being a clutch of new signings.

I do believe we will now see the best of him with the focus now shifting from him to the french boys.

    Is this a fair point?

  40. This whole match fixing thing, was laughing this morning about it.

Liverpool game against Debrecen at Anfield was one of the games highlighted.

What made me laugh is that they apparantly paid the Debrecen keeper to let in at least 3 goals. Liverpool won 1-0.

Not the keepers fault if they can only muster 1 shot on target 😆

      (Quote)

  41. Newkie @40

Another reason the club may have decided to hold back on bringing in more players in the summer would be because they were well aware that they had a lot of young players on the books who would be turning 21 during the year. In those circumstances most clubs would (and, indeed, most clubs DO) leave a few unfilled places in their 25 man squad, to make sure that they’ve got enough room to include those youngsters as they come through.

In our case we had SEVEN players who turned 21 during last year (Santon, Ferguson, Tavernier, Dummett, Inman, Newton and Ranger), and the board would have been fully expecting at least 3 of them to have become first team regulars by the start of next season. The fact that they only named 22 players at the beginning of this season, leaving 3 spaces available, would have made perfect sense at the time.

In the event, because of our January activity, we’ve now ended up with 31 players who are currently aged over 21, so Pards is going to have a few problems in the summer trying to decide which ones (including any new recruits) are going to make the final cut of 25.

      (Quote)

  42. Big Papa – I think some fans also resented him – or should I say his signing not him personally. I don’t think many had heard of him (me included) and he wasn’t the CB or CF we all knew we needed or wanted. I think he’s fee was quite high we a lot were saying ‘why didn’t we just keep Guthrie?!’. Yeah I felt sorry for Anita as well, but to be honest, I’ve been very impressed with his strength of character. He’s a little lad but he’s never hid and never huffed when used at RB, LB or MF. I think he’s in the long term plan and will likely feature more in the next few seasons.

      (Quote)

  43. Coutts – I’m surprised his contract wasn’t cancelled in Jan as well as Xiscos. I’d have rather seen us keep hold JJ Hooper than Ranger to be honest. I know people will say that would have left us too short on CFs, but Pardew has said he doesn’t want to play him again and the kid does nowt when he comes on anyway so stick Obertan there instead.
Di Santo is available on a free in the summer I think (Wigan). He wouldn’t be bad as a squad player IMO. He’s nee goal machine but I reckon he could do a job and wouldn’t cost loads either.

      (Quote)

  44. i think we will see a lot more come from anita in a holding role, he’ll probably be an unsung hero as he’ll allow others to attack whilst he covers

he could be the succesor to tiote, not as much of a destroyer but maybe a bit more creative

depending on oposition and tactics having them both sit in midfield still allows for others to attack more

      (Quote)

  45. LST – I’m talking about as a squad player, not as competition to Cisse or the RVW or PEA or whoever we sign in the summer.
Is Di Santo better or worse than Shola?. IMO better, younger and quicker – and likely to nick afew more goals per season. He’s only 24 and 6’4ft so yeah, I reckon he’d be an upgrade to Shola

      (Quote)

  46. I see Colo has said he still wants to return home at end of season, defo need a striker and c/back then

      (Quote)

  47. MDS – forget selling him, I’d release him. I’d give him a 30sec head start and then I’d also release the hounds!!! 😈 😈

Ice – do you not reckon Di Santo would be an improvement on Shola?. Don’t get me wrong mate, I’d rather get someone like Jordan Rhodes or Charlie Austin, but I reckon those lads would cost around £7-8m – Rhodes maybe even more coz he’s not long been at Bburn and I’m sure they paid about £8m for him last season.
That’s a lot of money for a 3-4th choice striker like. I think that Campbell probably needs at least another season or 2 before he’s ready so someone like Di Santo on a free would be an inexpensive gap filler if you like.

      (Quote)

  48. @Sharpy

  52. Sharpy, I’d realease him too but you’d have to buy him out (assuming they don’t have a conduct clause in his contract). the club probably figures that if thye have to pay him anyway they might as well keep him around in case of emergency

      (Quote)

  53. Santii – every stable needs a donkey. As I say short term solution for very little outlay. Wouldn’t be my first choice but 1st choice would cost around £8m. That’s too much for a 3rd choice CF, and I’d rather the money was spent on a quality CF and CB.

Ice – I wasn’t suggesting you were rubbishing my suggestion, I was just explaining my thought behind it. As for the CB you think the club have in mind, it wouldn’t begin D and ouglas by any chance would it 🙄

At CB i seen someone mention Kurt Zouma If we could get him for around the same price as Mbiwa, we would have one of the best defenses in the league.

  56. Ice – I wasn’t suggesting him, I was suggesting that’s who Pardew would be looking to bring in!. I don’t want him!! He’s a Samba Willo for me. I’d like to see us get Kurt Zouma as I mentioned earlier. If not him, I’m a fan of Simon Kjaer as well.

Santii – that’s why I was suggesting Di Santo on a freeby 🙄 To provide cover to allow Campbell to develop over the next season or 2.
To be fair I’m not sure who else is available on a free so there may be better options. Just using Di Santo as an example.
