Scenes of celebration after another late show
Scenes of celebration after another late show
We seem to be getting used to late shows as fans of United. Papiss Cisse’s winner against Fulham was just another addition to the list of late shows we’ve witnessed in recent weeks.

To expand on that, we beat Anzhi with a stoppage time goal, Stoke suffered the same fate as did Chelsea and, earlier on in the season, West Brom.

That’s five games that have been won beyond the 90th minute so far this season. Ideally I’d prefer it if we could get things done before the final few seconds. If we could then my backside probably wouldn’t have nipped so many holes in my sofa, which is a thought you probably could do without on a Tuesday. However doing it easy wouldn’t be the United way…

The question is, is this something to be lauded? Does this startling fact typify a never say die attitude amongst our players? Are our French foreign legion tougher than the average opposing fan would like to think? I mean if you listen to the stereotype these players should give up rather than fight back, right?

To put things in perspective, we’ve gained an extra eight points in stoppage time since the start of February and we’ve also got into the Europa League Quarter Final as a result of another late goal. Could you imagine where we would have been without them?

So are they a symbol of a spirit within the camp or are they covering up things that should have been rectified earlier on in the game? Personally I think it’s a bit of both but, in a perverse kind of way, you can’t help but love the scenes that these late strikes conjure up. The celebrations against Fulham showed that and showed just how much the players and Pardew actually care about things.

I’ve not done much research into this and I could be wrong, but I’m struggling to remember so many late goals in our favour. They just never generally seemed to happen for us. Now though it seems to be different and we can head into injury time safe in the knowledge that the players aren’t already in the dressing room.

Having said that, I don’t think my heart can take many more of them!

Don’t think it was even that long, was incredible. My dad went from smiling, to worried to angry in two minutes though 😆 . We’ve got a £10 bet going on, I said a Bundesliga team would win, he says a la liga.

  3. Just listening to talksport, they’re asking whether any PL player would get into the World XI squad. I say only Bale, what do others think?

      (Quote)

  4. @Andy

Suarez and Bale are the only two.

None of the united players would get near it. Shows how good SAF is like.

  5. Andy – That is such a pointless exercise as there is no other world’s XI to play against, as far as I’m aware.

  6. Apparently SETI reckon the daleks end up bottom of the worlds league every season. They’re *****.

  7. Shut it Santii 😆 😉

    Here’s my XI
    ————————–Neuer———————-
    -Lahm———Subotic—–Piqué———Alba-
    ———Özil————Iniesta———-Xavi—–
    ——Ronaldo———-Messi———Bale——

Willing to swap Subotic for Hummels and can’t think of too many world class LB’s that can actually defend (not many can). Was also reluctant to not use Kroos/Götze/Reus. Silva may also sneak into midfield in place of Özil making it two PL players.

  8. Dave – It starts next season for me like, so unless they leave in the summer then yes I expect them to hang round mate. They’re all on long contracts and Ashley will want crazy money for them, unless its players Pardew is happy to leave.
I think if we achieved 8th next season and the players saw Ashley investing in new players then they’ll happily stay.

MDS – personally I recognized the Carroll sale as a great bit of business the day we sold him – not ideal the last day of the window but £35m was superb. However, as well as we did last season, there was many people still going on about the Carroll money and questioning Ashley and I reckon there’s afew reading our discussing biting their tongue right now mate 😛 😆
We may not agree about everyone seeing sales as a positive but I think we share similar hopes for the club mate 😉

Don’t be a spoil sport, we’re playing the Martians next week any way, Obertan is proof enough that we’re not alone 😯 😆

  11. Santii – Obertan? You mean Squidward. He used to warm the bench for Spongebob’s Bikini Bottom X1 before we signed him. 😛

      (Quote)

  12. B&B – in the fullness of time I’d agree that was a good deal too, however at the time I thought we were crazy to let Cole go. There again, I was alot younger back then and my sense of perspective was alot narrower.

  13. Sharpy “back then and my sense of perspective was a lot narrower” surely not possible 😆 😉

A strange one. Many and myself have at times thought how much slower we have looked compared to other teams. Stamina doesn’t appear a problem going by the late goals. Has to be something to do with training methods? If you’ve seen my waist line you would guess I am no expert on training methods”

Toby, judging by your comments I would guess you aren’t an expert on anything… 😆 😆 😉

  21. After the bollocks we’ve had to witness for the majority of the season. The incredible thing is that for me… if we progressed past Benfica and beat the Scum to survive, I would actually consider this season a relative success.

I still think if we’d bought in the summer we could have been challenging for Europe again, but we could end the season in the last four a a major European event and we’ll start next season in the Premiership with hopefully the strongest squad we’ve had in ages without the distraction of Europe. Unless by some miracle we went on to win it of course.

…..If Obertan is leaving (and I hope he is) could Santon take his place as a winger in the squad and therefore free up space for another full back?

Actually, if Obertan leaves and Santon takes his place as a winger it won’t free up any space in the 25 man squad. Santon isn’t currently named in the squad because for this season he still qualifies as under 21. Next season he will no longer qualify, so a space will need to be made available for him. In effect he would take up the place vacated by Obertan, so the total number of players in the (25 man) squad would stay the same.

  24. I see our debt of 140 million from 2011 is now 129 million at the end of 2012. After this season in Europe I would expect that figure to be down to around 115 million at the 2013 financial year.

Then with this massive rise in tv revenue, it could very well be around 90 million by the end of next season.

Makes it understandable why if a big offer comes in for one of our players that we simply can’t refuse it.

Its a fine balance as we see non investment almost cost us big this season. So I think Ashley would have learned from that.

Hopefully we can continue our current trend and be debt free within 8-10 years. Although I think Ashley’s plan would be to get the debt low enough for us to become a very attractive buy for a rich investor.

Also, in five years time a debt of 50 million would be absolutely nothing with inflation. Its great that our debt is being reduced while at other clubs it is ballooning to absurd amounts.

Have you really just compared us to Leeds and Portsmouth? Unbelievable! Leeds and Portsmouth both spent way beyond their means – I don’t ever really think I said we should do the same, I said we should follow the lead of Everton and Spurs. In fact we should have abetter chance than Everton as they’re flat broke!

Also who are these Spurs players who came through their youth team?

Oh and yes I would like us to sell someone like Tiote in the summer for decent money and then add that to the pot we already have (and we have already been told we has one) and improve again.

If you really don’t think achieving what Spurs have achieved is possible I’m not too sure why you bother… Go watch Sunderland!

  29. Stu – maybe if you took your head out of your **** you’d have a better chance of actually reading my posts properly.
The only person who is making comparisons with other clubs is you. I simply pointed out that Leeds and Portsmouth paid the price for trying to hurry things. Could we have gone the same way, well we’re 5 points from relegation as we speak, though that is more through not spending money on players in the summer.
As I told MDS last night, I do believe that we could mount a challenge on 4th spot but I’d sooner we established ourselves in the top 8 finish – what’s the problem with that like?

      (Quote)

  30. Oh and having supported NUFC for over 30yrs now, I don’t intend switching teams now just coz you don’t like or agree with where I think we should be – grow up man FFS.

  31. Sharpy – I never mention speeding things up. I actually said right at the beginning of this thread that we had a great chance to move forward last summer, and yes speed it up but speed it up responsibly as we had such a good season last season.

I really cannot see why everyone seems to have a problem with us looking at top four in the next couple of seasons. Look at the players we have! They’re really top class players – who would get into a lot of top four teams.

Which part of that are you reading and seeing that I have a problem with us looking at top four in a few seasons time?!.
I personally think we need 5-6 changes/additions to our squad to give us the strength in depth that we have lacked this season. I’d like to see us sort that in the summer, but even if we only manage to sort 3-4 then we’d have enough to be top 8 IMO.
(And when I say top 8, that doesn’t mean 8th by the way)

Hated her in life and won’t mourn her passing and am quite angry that £10M will come out of tax payers pockets to pay for her send off in a time of austerity when the benefits of genuine needy folk and the disabled are being slashed . I won’t respect her in death as she didn’t respect the living in many parts of the uk. My memories of thatcher are friends dropping their house keys back to the estate agents having lost their homes due to sky high interest rates ,a fate I myself nearly succumbed to .

You know, funerals, which normal people have to pay for up and down the country out of their own pocket, every fucking day.

MDS-I pity you for that, I hate our royal obsession but at least they are in our country. When they said that 1 billion people watched the marrige (i didn’t) I had to ask, why waste your time on that? 😕
