Stalemate not good enough for United! West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

Cisse's effort rolls to the line
Cisse’s effort rolls to the line
A much improved performance saw Newcastle United pick up a point at Upton Park after playing out a 0-0 draw at a ground which has been notoriously tricky for visiting teams this term.

Indeed United could have bagged more than just a point had Papiss Cisse’s first-half effort been adjudged to have crossed the line and been awarded as a goal. Rightly or wrongly it wasn’t given and a point had to do in the end.

If you look at our result in isolation a point away at West Ham wasn’t a poor result, but wins for sides above and below us, especially Wigan winning at West Brom, mean that nerves are starting to jangle a bit louder here in the North East.

With Moussa Sissoko missing United lined up in a 4-3-3 formation which did at least show some attacking intent, but it was West Ham who had the first attack although Mohamed Diame’s shot was blasted wildly over the crossbar. United responded and had their own half-chance soon after as Hatem Ben Arfa fired in a free-kick from the wide right which landed on top of the net rather than inside it.

The game ebbed and flowed with neither side really threatening in attack although there was a moment of controversy as Yohan Cabaye played in Papiss Cisse who rolled the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen only to see Winston Reid hook the ball off the line. Cisse was adamant it was over and TV replays proved inconclusive, aside from a replay from one angle which showed that the ball looked to have crossed the line.

Hatem Ben Arfa then had another soon after as he burst into the West Ham box but his tame shot was easily dealt with by the West Ham goalkeeper. United had probably had the better of the first-half but it remained all-square at half-time.

Half-time: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

The second-half started with Andy Carroll nodding a cross from Matt Jarvis wide of the goal before once again United responded as Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa rolled the ball to Yohan Cabaye who say his long-range drive fly just wide of Jaaskelainen’s post. Hatem Ben Arfa the curled a frekick into the arms of the West Ham ‘keeper.

The away side had Rob Elliot to thank for keeping the score at 0-0 as he kept out Kevin Nolan with a fine double-save before denying Matt Jarvis with another fine save to his right.

Just two minutes after that though United were handed another chance as Yoan Gouffran advanced forward and knocked the ball past Jussi Jaaskelainen who had come out of goal in an attempt to deal with the danger. With space running out Gouffran was forced to shoot from a narrow angle and his effort bobbled just wide of the post.

Both teams pressed at times but neither was able to break the deadlock in what was a match that lacked any real quality. A point gained but it doesn’t feel like it due to results elsewhere.

Full-time: West Ham 0-0 Newcastle

It’s now looking like we are going to be the third side relegated and we’ll be joining Reading and QPR in the Championship next season. These are dark times at Newcastle and I can’t see it sending any time soon. Suffice to say I’d buckle your seatbelts as it’s going to be a bumpy few years.

That might be an understatement…

West Ham: Jussi Jaaskelainen; Joey O’Brien, Winston Reid, James Collins, Guy Demel; Gary O’Neill, Mohamed Diame, Kevin Nolan, Matt Jarvis; Ricardo Vaz Te, Andy Carroll

  1. Aussie, @294
It would be the most heartfelt and pleasing apology I’ve ever had to give.

  2. Either way, if we go down, or if we stay up, I will be sick to my stomach if he is still manager of this club next season after the pain and he has put me through having to watch the football we’ve played this season.

0-4 vs Man City, 0-3 vs Man U, 3-7 vs Arsenal, 0-3 vs Mackems, 0-6 vs Liverpool.

And the only easy defeat – a 3-0 win over 10 man Wigan at home.

I’m not even convinced that the hammerings are over yet…

  3. Dummett and Newton offered Newcastle deals…

Can’t see Sissoko, Cabaye, Tiote, Cisse, Colo, Santon, Debuchy, Ben Arfa, or Marvauex, staying if we get relegated.

Looking at this, relegation just isn’t an option this time around. It won’t be seen as a once off thing, we won’t have the same characters in the dressing room that inspired last time.

Just don’t see that team getting out first time around. Don’t see Ashley funding things again either.

  4. JJ@303 – that’s the most depressing thing I’ve read in a long long time. There again with Pardew as manager there’s always hope!

  5. Well the thing with our next game is we are playing a team that just dont care about the club they are playing for . I read yesterday that Hoillet has already found another club and their big earners will be looking more for their next move than bothering about the last 2 games . Where as captain colo will be leading a team that wants too stay up ,i think we can damage them badly even though we have not scored in the last 4 .Lets just hope the scum get beat tonight and wigan tomorrow.

  6. I’m off. Let’s hope Di Canios managed to mash their minds enough they forget which way they’re kicking. Could happen!

  7. Steve Carney, what a shame and rest in peace, my memory of him was at home v Leicester City, Alan Smith and Lineker were their front two and early in the match Steve poleaxed Smith in an aerial clash, hard as nails, same as Alan Shoulder, they gave everything every game.

  8. It’s all going Pete Tong for QPR on Twitter. M’bia has just come out and said he wants to leave, but QPR are refusing to discuss it with him. He also sent Barton another msg saying he wants to swap teams with him and wasn’t joking. Barton replied and said “not a chance”, or something along those lines. It’s mad that these are two professionals being paid by QPR and there isn’t an ounce of respect there. I’ve never seen such a public display of contempt. Expect the big earners to cause a lot of unrest in the next few months and we should be first in line to capitalise on it.

  9. The Kid,
The “Fool” will set us up for a draw against QPR 😉

  10. Steve Carney. I remember watching him when I was about 13 yrs, standing in the Gallowgate.

Some young fans wouldn’t have recognised SJP.

    Probably averaging 16k fans.

  11. Steve Carney gave his all for the toon. Hard as nails and gave his all for the cause. RIP mate.

      (Quote)

  12. Steve Carney, cost £1,000 from Blyth Spartans in 1979, and went on to play 149 times for the toon. Talk about fairytales.

      (Quote)

  13. Steve Carney gone now. Just a young man of 55. We could use some of his graft and desire now. RIP.

  14. Of all the great posts on here, few have picked up on my pet moan, that we cannot seem to last longer than 70 minutes in a game.
I genuinely think that we have players who cannot last the full 95 minutes of a high pressure EPL game. It cannot all be down to bad tactical decisions from Pardew…….surely….?

      (Quote)

  15. Aye Munich @319 I’ve noticed it as well mate. Lack of fitness at this stage of the season? Bizarre. I thought Jonas started the season with a paunch and he has lost a huge amount of pace. He lumbers along now. At his age (29?) it’s ridiculous. Others seem to have problems as well. Gouffran doesn’t seem to have pace for long and tires easily as well. What is going on at the club?

      (Quote)

  16. MM/G2 it started when pardew made a right pigs ear of the pre-season that was down to him too

      (Quote)

  17. Icedog I remember watching the toon flaunting round here in Germany against Monaco, and thought what the f… we were pish poor. Started on the wrong foot and never picked up if you ask me.

G2, some players are just not up to it at the moment. These things happen mate, Jonas is a prime example, he has been sussed out. This Jonas shuffle then throw himself on the ground doesn’t work anymore.
I think 90 minutes of a knackered Gouffron is better than 20 minutes of Shola to be honest 🙁 His legs have finally gone, but Pardew obviously sees a different game. Pitiful. What do we have to lose by throwing young Campbell in there ? He would at least keep the defenders occupied.

      (Quote)

  18. Aye ice our problems seemed to start with the pre-season mate. We looked terrible right from the start.

      (Quote)

  19. Spot on again Munich lad. It looks like Jonas is finished as well as Shola. If Pardew can’t see it he has to go. Very poor decision making going on with Pardew looking lost to change it now. We may stay up but it will be more to do with other clubs saving us than our own efforts it looks like. The QPR game is crucial. I’m still hoping for that one.

      (Quote)

  20. Icedog

Beardsley was a genius. The way he skips past players is mesmerising.

Videos of him showed be played to all our current players to make them realise how much graft he put in every game.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen him have a game where he hasn’t put everything into it.

      (Quote)

  21. Well lads have you got everything crossed that it goes our way tonight?.
    Here we go 🙄

      (Quote)

  22. G2, it’s a bit of a tricky one, knowing that HBA can only last 50 – 60 minutes, I still think he should start the game though. I really would think about playing young Campbell for the last 20, because Shola brings nowt to the team any more.

Troy, Beardsley was an absolutely brilliant player, he was even better when he was at Liverpool 🙂

      (Quote)

  23. Did anyone see how quickly and with how much aggression Stoke moved and attacked that corner ? They just fuking “bruted” the ball into the net. Our lot look like some U13 team in comparison. Get into the makkems !!

      (Quote)

  24. Need a result as bad start to week ,Lew under the weather ,pond pump broke and my fancy goldfish has fungus 🙁 Afternoon spent cleaning out pond, medicating fish ,sorting out pump and wipeing Lews nose 🙄 So those buggers Stoke better thrash the Scum .

      (Quote)

  25. Quite interesting to see Whitehead get a yellow card for that foul when you consider some of the fouls doing the rounds the last few weeks. Weak..

      (Quote)

  26. Man the makkems are absolutely pish poor. They battered us, so how bad does that make us ? 😯

      (Quote)

  27. Wow Kimtoon. Hang on in there mate, those Stokey’s will cheer you up mate 🙂

      (Quote)

  28. Maybe the gods are looking up with Fletcher being injured and Sessong being banned until the end of the season. Maybe the makkems will go down ? 😈 😈

      (Quote)

  29. MM I have said it many times we should give Campbell a go as we dont know what he could give us, rather than Strolla as we all know what he brings us and its not what we need, I really cant believe that Campbell could be any worse.

      (Quote)

  30. Big D, It’s becoming obvious that the ONLY difference between a top 8 finish and a relegation struggle is finding someone who can weigh in with 10 goals next season. Both the makkems and Stoke are pish poor, and neither have strikers. However, we have Cisse… he’s just isolated and badly needs support. Young Campbell could be the wild card who saves our season ?

      (Quote)

  31. Johnson is wasted in this makkem line up 🙁 That woulkd be brilliant wouldn’t it, Hull getting promoted and the makkems getting relegated with Agent Bruce thumbing his nose at them on the way past 😈 😈

      (Quote)

  32. Big Dave – Pardew needs Strolla on the bench, who else is he going to bring on first change?

      (Quote)

  33. Dave ,even more important is opposition teams don’t really have him sussed yet ,so even more reason to throw him on.

      (Quote)

  34. Scum fans getting on their teams backs ,so much for Di Canio having the magic touch ,and they call us fickle 🙄

      (Quote)

  35. MM@344-That would be sweet indeed, but I can’t speculate or care on who goes down, just so long as it isn’t us 😥

      (Quote)

  36. Big D, I have defended Shola over the years, but the fact of the matter is that this year he has been absolutely terrible. He seems to have lost his “impact sub” touch. If Pardew cannot see that then he must be really dim. Shola doesn’t even offer anything defensively any more.

Man this bloke reffing the makkem game is absolutely *****. He is dishing yellow cards out like confetti. Wehey the makkems having a 2 minute applause to celebrate Porterfields goal in the makkem FA Cup final win. The toon will have a two minute applause the next time we score from a corner…

Ya BEAUTY. MAKKEMS have got a red card, Gardner. and **** what a horrible tackle. Ole Ole !!!! Things are looking up now Kimtoon 🙂

      (Quote)

  37. I can see this ref giving out another red card to be honest… Charley Adam will be the next, get thirty bob on him… 🙂

Interesting comment from the commentator “Crouch is a real handful”…. He’s been absolutely pish 😯 Man they love to roll out the cliches…

      (Quote)

  38. Don’t think so Batty. Think the totting up process started again a couple of weeks ago. Although would be nice…

      (Quote)

  39. Scums last two games are home to the saints and away to spurs. Can they get results in them I wonder.

Stoke should of really gone for it that half , Dic will work on them now 🙄

      (Quote)

  40. I just stared at the bottom of the Premier League table for 2 minutes, and I still didn’t feel much better 🙁

      (Quote)

  41. Munich-If Adam gets a red I’d hope its for breaking Larrson or Johnson in two..

Kim-Surely the mighty pochettino that people were raving about a while back will smash the mackems…Spurs will be up for it hopefully, just like Arsenal will be against us. We’re in a remarkably shitting position. Agree with you about stoke, really don’t want them giving up the pressure…

      (Quote)

  42. It seems our only hope is that Norwich or Sunderland are ******* than us. I just think Wigan have the form and games to get out of it. How depressing is that? we’re reduced to begging other teams to lose rather than being able to control our own fate.

      (Quote)

  43. Craig Gardner can join the rest of the inbreeds on the train to games again now. 😮

      (Quote)

  44. I still fancy the Mackems might get something out of this. They’re at home and should really be giving it a good go now, which I think they will.

The question is, are Stoke good enough to hit them on the break and finsih it off?

      (Quote)

  45. dont want too sound like a know all but i did say day or two ago the SCUM would get bullied against Stoke and outplayed by southampton and loose both games .I am still standing by that 😀

      (Quote)

  46. TROY @325 agree was one of my fav, broke the mould when he finished, aye shove the vid down there throat

      (Quote)

  47. Axel, if that’s what you know I’ll be well happy with that mate 🙂

Stuart79@367, I hope you’re wrong there mate 🙁 Stoke are really poor, only 1 team are playing with any urgency and it’s the ten man makkems 🙁

      (Quote)

  48. Mackems were always going to come out of the traps first 15 mins of this half. Stoke just need to hold on till 60 mins.
