Back in our hands?

Wigan miss chance to overtake United
Wigan miss chance to overtake United
Personally I hate relying on other results when it comes to our own fortune, but to be honest I’ll take pretty much anything that comes our way right now.

So whilst I’m loathe to revel in the misfortunes of others, I am still delighted that Swansea managed to do us a favour last night by beating Wigan 3-2 at the DW Stadium.

That game was Wigan’s game in hand and if they’d have won it they would have overtaken us and ensured we faced QPR at the weekend as the last occupants of the relegation zone. However as things stand now we are still three points ahead of the Latics with just two games left to play for all teams involved in the relegation dogfight.

So how do things stand now following on from the result last night? Well the first thing to observe is that our destiny is now back in our own hands. From experience that chance often doesn’t come around twice so it’s now up to us to take the chance we’ve been afforded with both hands.

To ensure we make the most of this chance we must pick up a win at QPR on Sunday. If we manage to grab just a second away win of the campaign it would mean that Wigan would then definitely have to win their two remaining fixtures which, if they did manage, would mean we need to pick up a point against Arsenal to be safe. Even a draw for us at QPR would be enough providing Arsenal beat Wigan at the Emirates on Tuesday night.

To be fair there are still lots of permutations and many twists and turns that could happen and any team up to Fulham in 12th could still be dragged into things, however unlikely it may seem right now. What we do have is a second chance to keep the ball in our court so to speak, but to make sure it remains that way we must win this weekend at QPR.

And if the players and manager can’t get that then well….

  1. Mark and Kimtoon, I watched the tail end of the Wigan Swansea game and really enjoyed the way Swansea played. Pass and move, with most of the team looking really comfortable on the ball. That lad Routledge looked like a good player. Maybe we can offer them Obertan in part exchange ? 😳

Joke or have you read that somewhere?!
The 8 year contract was all part of Ashley’s plan, we’re going to get some bumper compensation package!
    @Mark
I think us being bigger than Everton is a complete myth tbh.

I think we are a far bigger club than Everton. We get almost 20k fans more each game. We are higher in the rich list and our stadium is modern and not ancient.

Since the premiership was formed we’ve been more successful in terms of qualifying for Europe.

Not so much. We get 10k more fans than Liverpool. The getting more fans to each game thing is going to lessen in impact as the new TV money comes in, as gate receipts will be an even smaller portion of our income.
I’ll give you the rich list point.
However I think the qualifying for Europe thing can swing both ways, we have burned more brightly, and sunk to lower depths. They have been steadily good over the last 10 years – top 8 all but twice in the last 10 years.
I much prefer flashes of brilliance, but I don’t think we can state as a fact we have been more successful for them, otherwise Blackburn could claim they are bigger as they have won the league since the Premiership was formed.
    It’s close imo.

  6. I fear that a relegated and unshackled QPR may have too much for us. We are so powder puff going forward.

Just watched the West Ham Newcastle highlights, man Jonas and Tiote were huffing and puffing around there like to old guys, both of them so non-athletic-like, getting nowhere near the player on the ball.

    We’re far from safe.

  7. Solano, I just hope JJ doesn’t see it or you might send him over the edge 😆

Agree with:463 we are fickle *****, some more so than others. The Fergie thing is brilliant, but then Ferguson still gets stick even now with selections or tactics-when the team lose. But then MU “fans” do tend to be the most embarrassing.

  8. That telegraph article is more **** stirring by Luke Edwards, suggesting Colo was admitting that the club was divided. Colo was merely stating that the players are discontented by the position that they were in and this was normal in a relegation struggle.

  9. just another feather in Pardew’s cap, to go with the missing tactical nous.

Can Pardew actually manage a first team squad made up of 75% foreigners ? Can he actually reach the Frenchies ?

      (Quote)

  10. well i will help pardew out and give him his excuse after the game, well the qpr pitch is small and compact and was hard for our flair players to open up the game, arsehole 😡

I know there’s no definitive method of measuring a big club and some measure it solely on trophies won.

I believe attendances, or even potential attendances should come into it. Everton have a 40k stadium and they average 34k.

I believe we could comfortably fill a 60+k stadium with a bit of ambition shown on the pitch.

We are fortunate that we are a one club city and can attract bigger crowds.

  12. Ice,@459 🙄 Really ,why does that not surprise me. Mind you it’s right up there with obvious statements to make ,but just once I would like him to say we aim to attack and get the 3 points. Still that’s what you get from an ex defender.
Talking of ex defenders I still remember David Moyes at Bristol City in the late 80’s 😆

Starting to get a bit worried about QPR having too much power for us.

Didn’t realise Everton underfilled by that much. Pretty shocking tbh. Think Everton and Villa could both lay claims one way or the other to being bigger than us. We undoubtedly have the most potential of the 3, but we all know that means naff all with nufc.
    @MM
Tiote is shocking these days. He’s just not worth the “purple” space. I made an early season prediction that he wouldn’t reach 20 games this year, he’s actually bettered what I thought, wish he hadn’t due to his performances though!
Can’t remember who posted saying it the other day, but definitely agree with selling Tiote and making Cabaye our sole defensive midfielder, days of a defensive midfielder being a battler only are long gone. Cabaye is good at the role, and unless he is forced to push forward seems to enjoy it. Even when he was playing behind Cisse in the 4-2-3-1 he rarely got in the box.

What are they putting in the water up in Scotland mate? You churn out decent, hard working managers with ease!
Fergie/Moyes/Clarke/Lambert vs Pardew/Allardyce/Redknapp/Adkins (p.s. since when was Hughton Irish?!)
Ours all bloody rotters! Sorry to lump you in with the other 3, Adkins.

  16. Dilema time, do I want my local team Leicester City to do well tonight and by some miracle fluke the play offs so we play them next season in the prem if we stay up, or hope they get beat and stay in the Championship so if we go down I have a local away match… decisions decisions 🙄

  17. Solanp, you forgot Woy. THE NEXT MANAGER HAS TO BE AN ENGLISHMAN.

Never got that argument because as mentioned, they’re all *****. Plus it would take a miracle worker to win anything with the england team, not a football manager.

  26. aye Ice, Everton was in the middle of the Tv show Bread.

We got there at halftime as my mate took the wrong turn on the m62 and ended u trying to guess a bridge in Liverpool.. which turned out to be the Humber bridge. lol we were in the back of a transit pished so not to be blames 😆 . quick u turn and missed most of the game. Speed and Ferguson scored for the toffees 😳

  28. Ginola Claims French Players Don’t Care If Newcastle Are Relegated

David Ginola has now jumped on the ‘too many Frenchmen’ bandwagon and claimed that they don’t really care if Newcastle are relegated and would just move elsewhere if it happened.

    Speaking on Talksport this is what Daveed had to say;

“Playing in Europe and then in a Premier League relegation fight are completely different things. You have to have the right sort of players for that task and I’m not sure that the (French) players are concerned about it. The players are thinking, ‘well if the club is relegated then we will leave in the summer’.”

  29. @ice. aye. lol we got a round of applause off the geordies at half time for turning up late. we had to cross the pitch behind Shakas goal. Some numpty steward tried to send us thru the stadium, where all of the scousers were having a pint. Some guy in a wheel chair rammed us and told us to get oot or he’d fu** us up 🙄 to which another steward ushered us out and across the pitch.

  34. I still can’t believe Moyes got the Manure job 😕 you would think for being one of the biggest clubs in the world they would have got one of the best managers in the world. But then maybe the Glaziers are trying to get some control of the club back. I just think they will go on a mini dip for a while until Moyes tries to get control of the big time players as by all accounts Fergie had his work cut out trying to keep some in line, but I will enjoy it if it does happen

      (Quote)

  35. @Mark
Not sure I enjoyed that, it’s just made me think how fckin lucky we were to have a a few world class players, and a couple of world class managers that all shared a huge passion for the club. Will we ever have another world class player that no intention of leaving? That freekick, ooof, who needs curl!

  36. @ST

I remember watching it live on Sky. the elation when shearer got his 3rd was amazing.

Aye. youre right there m8. the days of long contracts are finished. We could of kept Ginola if it wasnt for Kenny and his vision of entertainment.. swapping Ginola, Ferdinand, Beardsley and Tino for Des hamilton, Ketsbaia, Barnes and Ian Rush 😆

although he did make some cracking signing, most notably Solano and Given and Speed.

      (Quote)

  37. Great vid Mark, what a move for the forth goal, ahh the days when Shearer was just a monster. Mind you, you forget how good Hesky was for the foxes as well!.

Anyway, bring back Kenny I say 😀

  38. Mark
Never seen that before, was 2 when it was live though 😆 . What a peach of a FK from Shearer.

  39. **** just saw Lee Probert is our ref against QPR. He is a terrible ref after reading his statistics about biases when reffing games! I don’t think the guy should be allowed to ref Prem league (or any) games with his record!

      (Quote)

  40. aye Newkie, it was a great build up. the freekick smashed by Shearer would of ended up at the redheugh bridge 😛

Aye he was a great player for Leicester, did ok for L’pool too, early doors.

  41. Jill@506 Yeah I’m non too happy either,he bloody gifted that game to Wigan last week ,missed two blatent pens for West Brom. Makes you wonder if he’s mates with Whelan . One missed you can maybe understand but the handball couldn’t of been any clearer. He needs to have a good game on sunday or it could look well dodgy.

      (Quote)

  42. Mark ,That was a great game and a brilliant come back by us ,can we imagine us ever doing that now 🙄 .Oh for another Alan ,who knows maybe his lad will take after him and grace the pitch at ST.James one day ,we can hope.

  43. TAE @510 ,It could be mind games from Arry regarding playing the youngsters but if true Wigan will be screaming blue murder about it not be fair on them like. Let’s face it we would be equaly unhappy it we werein Wigans position .On the flip side the youngsters will be keen to prove a point to Arry that they have what it takes 🙄 End of the day it’s in our hands to secure PL status and if we fail then we only have ourselves to blame .If he plays the youngsters Pards needs to just say to the team ,I’m sure you won’t let a bunch of kids beat you WILL YOU ?.

      (Quote)

  44. @ KIMTOON
was half expecting him to do that if i was him i would not want us in the same league, hes hopeing to bounce straight back and if were there that wont happen in my view 😆

      (Quote)

  45. Mark 😀 Aye, how it never broke the net I will never know. 😉

TAE-Swings and roundabouts, some of their stars have been so poor I wouldn’t mind them being on the pitch. As Kim says we just need to focus on ourselves and focus on getting the win, or at least a point.

      (Quote)

  46. It’s a good point about arry maybe playing the long game and wanting wigan down..but who knows? Our squad will be ripped to shreds if we went down and QPR would have more investment than anyone in the championship anyway, I’m sure he’s confident he could take them back up.

      (Quote)

  47. @ NEWKIE
he also has a lot of players on high wages that he aint ganna be able to shift though QPR being foolish enough to pay top dollar wages

      (Quote)

  48. True, but Fernandes seems more than willing to throw his money into that club, something our owner certainly won’t be doing. Some of those players would take a cut and leave, if it means furthering their career imo. Like Remy..wouldn’t be good if he stuck with them.

      (Quote)

  49. TAE I don’t think we’ll go down but if we did I don’t think we would get it to easy and would struggle to come back up . As I think we would lose most of our best players 👿

      (Quote)

  50. @ BIG DAVE
think the only players we would lose if we went down would be the same players we would lose if we stayed up anyway bud.Alos thinks we wont go down has a sneaky feeling we got enough all ready.think well win at QPr but i think a points would be more than enough bud
