The price of failure this season? A cool £9 million!

TV money
TV money
The latest figures for TV and prize money have been released, and they don’t make good reading for the finance wizards at Newcastle United.

The figures have revealed that revenue from prize money and TV income has dropped by roughly 20% following the disappointing 16th placed finish this term.

United’s high-flying fifth placed finish last season earned them £54.2m in TV and prize money compared to only (only, I know…) £45.1m this term. The reduction in revenue wasn’t all to do with league placing however as we saw ourselves broadcast less this term (16 times this season compared to 18 last season) which accounts for just over £1m of the difference, and it’s also worth noting that these figures don’t include any payments made for games broadcast in the Europa League, League Cup or FA Cup.

How is it all worked out?

Each Premier League team receives a fixed amount from UK broadcasting rights which is 50% of the total pot split between the twenty clubs equating to £13,803,038. All overseas broadcasting rights are also split equally between the twenty clubs giving each club another £18,931,726, or a total of £32,734,764.

This is then supplemented by “facility fees” which account for a further 25% of the total UK broadcasting rights pot which are awarded each time a team is televised. Each televised game is worth £578,326 with each club guaranteed to be shown at least ten times throughout the season. United were shown 16 times giving us facility fees totalling £8,654,602.

The remaining 25% of the UK broadcasting rights pot is then split depending on league position called “merit payments”, with each position in the Premier League worth £775,881. So QPR received the basic £775,881 with each position above that adding another £775,881. United finished fifth bottom so 5 x £775,881 = £3,779,405.

Equal share – £32,734,764
Facility fees – £8,654,602
Merit payment – £3,779,405

Add all that together and you get a total of £45,168,771. It’s all here on the Premier League website if you wish to have a nosey.

As mentioned earlier though these figures are for the Premier League only so they might not end up being as bad as they look right now and I expect a few million of that to be made back up meaning that in the end we actually won’t be too far off what we made last season.

Next season will be more interesting however. Manchester United earned just over £60m for winning the Premier league this season but that figure is expected to rise to roughly £100m for the eventual winners next season. It won’t be us so put those dreams on hold, but an increase in revenue should be felt throughout the league.

What happens with that money is an entirely different debate however…

  1. The extra nine million didn’t seem to help us last summer so this might just kick Ashley into thinking he needs to spend to make sure our revenue is back to what it could/should be.

  2. Had we paid Demba Ba the 80k he wanted we would have finished top 8 and earned millions more instead of losing 9million maybe won the Europa league the form he was in cant be denied we had a good chance he was carrying the team but the board thought he wasnt worth that much now we are going to have to spend 10-15million on a new striker do the math MA and DL……peeny pinching has cost you big time…

Demba didn’t want to be here, we were just a stepping stone and it wasn’t like we were in fantastic form before he left.

  5. We literally can not afford to be down the bottom again next season, anywhere near missing out on the next wave of premier league money. It’s not even funny, getting relegated now is potentially game over for the likes of Blackburn, Wigan and Bolton being a premier league team for the next 10 years. If they do get back up, what is the gap going to be between them and the established prem squads.

At least we didn’t finish runners up to our poorer neighbours pal and what’s it like to be losers every season who don’t even finish in the top 6 anymore. Arn’t ‘use’ supposed to be a top 4 club? 🙂

  7. Danno when you are finished here and on .org theres the .com site as well to try your chronic trolling out on. Funny how you can spell ‘degenerate’ though 😐

  8. Kimtoon – I think its a word that comes up a lot on his cv. 😀

Wasn’t it essentially those deadbeats that handed you a lesson the time before Danno? Y’know – the one where we gave you a striker and that most versatile of utility players, a LB that doubles as a GK? 😀

      (Quote)

  9. Wow Danno has really shown us up hasn’t he, just booked into the burn ward 🙄 .

  10. Liverpool fans classy as ever I see. Danno just make sure you get yourself a rabies jab, not on account of your girlfriend this time, just incase Liverpool’s favourite golden boy fancies a snack with the fans post match.

How the mighty have fallen, scum 😆

Don’t diss Enrique he was the only GK in footballing history to never have conceded a goal 😯 , we had been playing him in the wrong position all along 😆 .

  12. On topic, I do worry about reinforcements, but then that’s no different from any window. Just hope we can sort the squad out and get the youngsters on loan. Can we please get campbell game time because I don’t want to see another youth who’s basically left to rot with sporadic loans here and there.

    What happened to Tavernier anyway..

      (Quote)

  13. Tav’s in china with the youngsters Newkie, he supposedly plays well for the reserves but he’s 21/22 now and has only played in league 1 so I don’t think he’ll make it, hope he does though.

      (Quote)

  14. (I guess that’s not really on topic, but I was just relating the fact we haven’t made much money to how little we spend anyway) !

Still at least we won’t have llambias gloating about finances again

      (Quote)

  15. Andy-Aye, we progressed him from like, conference to l2 then l1, and then didn’t really get him to a championship side…criminal. Goode with 3/4 appearances this year? Sammy and fergie on >10? we’re absolutely rubbish at it. Doesn’t this come under llambias’ remit?

    No shock its ****e then

      (Quote)

  16. Newkie
I think the main problem is that clubs don’t want our youth, Man U, Chelsea and Arsenal are all able to loan the likes of Welbeck, Sturridge (moved on for big money) and Wilshere to PL clubs to get experience and now they’re all internationals. We don’t have the authority to hand players on to rivals as they don’t rate our youngsters. Soton is a different tactic, start off with youth in the lower divisions and have them promote your team trough the leagues, I’d rather we didn’t do this. 😆

      (Quote)

  17. Andy – I don’t think it’s about authority at all. It’s simply the fact we’ve got no kids coming through worth anything at all. Campbell may be an exception but we’ll never get to find out with Pardew in charge.

      (Quote)

  18. Andy-I’m not saying PL mate as frankly any youth who could play there could easily make our first 11 given the performances. But championship is a must. Fergie and sammy got some time in the CC, both scored a good goal, seemed to be pulling their weight and then got recalled after about 2/3 months? Same with Vuckic, he got about a month on loan to cardiff last year. These lads need whole seasons imo.

      (Quote)

  19. Georgio
I think Campbell will play more often next season, if Shola goes then we’d need to bring in 2/3 CFs in the summer but I can see the club bringing in one new CF and have Adam as 3rd choice. We have had kids that have been highly rated over the years that just haven’t made it, whether that’s down to them or whether its how they’ve been developed I don’t know but in continental Europe ie Holland, Belgium, France and Germany they seem to develop their youth a lot better than us so maybe we could loan some of our youngsters abroad. SAF loaned a few of his players to Copenhagen at one point so they’d get experience and because Copenhagen dominate they’d get into the mentality of being in a winning team.

      (Quote)

  20. Andy – you’re missing the point. There are no kids of quality to come through. The coaching from an early age at our club must be abysmal. That’s where the problem lies. If kids don’t have superb ball control by the time they’re 11, they never will have. I’ve already named 6 first teamers we have who are really poor footballers. Every player in the Spanish league, and that’s thousands, has better ball control.

      (Quote)

  21. I’m going to have to give up reading our local papers. The quotes from Pardew do my head in. Today he’s going to sign 2 players. 2 players with prem experience. He probably means Shaun Derry and Darren Bent!!
He likes Weimann. Anybody rate him? He runs a lot, must be better than Shola. We’ll end up with extra journeymen like Perch, Simmo, Willo.

      (Quote)

  22. Georgio-our club, and every other English side it seems…Look at the touch of welbeck, I’d say his is one of the worst in the league and he is englands centre forward! The only genuinely quality player England has produced recently is Wilshere IMO, shame he’s a gob****e.

      (Quote)

  23. Georgio
What do you suggest then? Bring in Spanish development coaches to teach Geordie youngsters to hold on to the ball and play with flair?

      (Quote)

  24. Georgio-I would love Weimann to be honest mate, he is a grafter, direct, pacey and can finish, ideal for us.

      (Quote)

  25. I’m nee mathematician and these figures mean squat to me to be honest. But what I do know is that our net spend last summer was around £4-5m and a net spend or around £10m I think in Jan. With getting rid of players like Smith, Ba and Xisco we must have reduced the wage bill.

I’m not a greedy or unrealistic fan who expects £30-40m to be spent this window. But with the new Wonga sponpsorship money and the TV money for staying in the league I think around £20m is fair to expect, especially if we can get around £10m for off loading Obertan, Gosling, Amalfitano and Williamson.

Having only spent a net of around £15m over the last 2 windows, I think it’s time to put some proper money into the transfer kitty I think.

      (Quote)

  26. Sounds good Andy! Been thinking again about players with prem experience that Pardew might pursue. Downing? Bardsley? Townsend? I want much much better and I doubt they’re available in England.

      (Quote)

  27. Sharpy I don’t think 30-40 million is unrealistic. That’s what I’d expect from a club of our size.

      (Quote)

  28. Georgio – A net spend of £20m mate, so around £30m out with around £10m in from player sales, maybe more if we end up selling Tiote, Cabaye, Benny or Colo. But I reckon we could get the 6-7 players I think we need the £30m spend.

Newkie – maybe I’m being optimistic, but it won’t be all outgoings is what I meant mate.

      (Quote)

  29. Georgio-so we get ourselves two gouffrans wide of Cisse and use Benny/marv in the hole, sounds good to me 😀

Still not convinced of Marv’s shooting but hopefully he’ll have more chances to show it next season..

      (Quote)

  30. Not marv, I meant goofy.

Sharpy-fair enough, be nice if someone offers big bucks for Jonas or Tiote…

      (Quote)

  31. Georgio – I’m a huge fan of Townsend and reckon we could maybe get him for around £5-6m. I quite like Downing as well but it depends how much Liverpool want for him.

      (Quote)

  32. Sharpy – Never use the ‘d’ word on this blog again – Goodness me

      (Quote)

  33. Georgio
PL experience doesn’t necessarily mean British, if what LST said this morning is right then Pardew might be after players like Vermaelan. Downing and Bardsley is a big no no, is Townsend a QPR player or was he just on loan from spurs?
    Newkie
Weimann would be awesome and was one of the reasons I wanted villa to go down, though we might still be able to get him.

    My preferred transfers
    Keep hold of:
    Krul
    Colo
    Cabaye
    Ben Arfa
    In:
    Vermaelan – 5-7m
    McCarthy -7/8m
    Weimann – 8/9m
    Abaumeyang – 12-14m
    Overall 32-39m
    Out:
    Harper (25k wages)
    Simpson (20k wages)
    Williamson 1.5m (15/20k wages)
    Santon 8/9m (25/30k wages)
    Tiote 10m (30k wages)
    Perch 1.5m (15k wages)
    Obertan 1.5-3m (20k wages)
    Amafilitano 500k (15k wages)
    Gosling 1-3m (20k wages)
    Shola 1-2m (30k wages)
    Income 25m-31.5m (approximately 225k wages)
    ————————Krul————————
    -Debuchy-Colocinni-Vermaelan-Mbiwa-
    ————Cabaye——–McCarthy———-
    —Ben Arfa——-Sissoko——Weimann—
    ——————Abaumeyang——————
    Subs:
    Elliot
    Taylor
    Anita
    Marveaux
    Jonas
    Campbell
    Cissé

That is an awesome squad and for approximately 8m net spend we could be challenging for the top 6 if not the top 4. The CB pairing is the PL experience needed to keep the back 4 holding their line.

  34. Your idiot fans are even now still talking about getting 25% of whatever we get off West ham 😉 Jesus use really are DELUDED lol
Come on Cashley get yourself back to France for some more championship players 😉 Because that’s where your playing after next season lmfao 25% sell on clause 😉 We might just give it too use, because you haven’t a pot to p*ss in 😉 lol
Love your owner 😉 king Cashley, the man who likes to buy low sell high 😉 So its safe to say,use are not going anywhere fast 😉 say bye bye to Cabaye & Ben arfa hehehe DELUDED IDIOTS

  35. 😳 forgot Gouffran, maybe he can replace Campbell and send him out on loan instead

      (Quote)

  36. Danno-how do you know there isn’t a clause? Were you involved in the contract talks? I’ve never claimed there was a sell on fee, it seems a bit far fetched to me.

But then, your lot did pay 35 mil in the first place, I wouldn’t rule anything out 😆

  37. “Andy Carroll was today weighing up his options after Liverpool accepted a £12 million offer from West Ham for the England striker.”
That’s less than what was previously reported 😕

      (Quote)

  38. Andy- I swear you forget people every time you do one of those lists.

Yeah, would have liked Villa to go down so the squad would have been pillaged.

They will be a good side next year IMO if they can get some money in, fair few good young players and despite the fact they turned on lambert they seem to have fickley changed their minds. Classic fans!

      (Quote)

  39. Danno , it’s been reported in the TIMES that there is a sell on clause of 25% ,however it only applies should Liverpool sell AC on for a profit , since you stand to lose around £20m on him it won’t happen and also means you lot was well and truly mugged twice now . Once by us and now by West Ham ,so enjoy spending the £15m you get for the lad won’t you .

      (Quote)

  40. Newkie
Your not wrong I find myself pondering who is in our squad when I do the list so I usually forget players, usually they aren’t one of the current first teamers though 😆

  42. Annoying but to be fair it’s a good idea. Means there’s more to fight for from an owners point of view (because euro money is ****) and therefore maybe more of a reason for ashley and pards to take it seriously…

Now the only thing they need to change is to stop champions league failures being rewarded with a shot in the europa league. Joke ruling.

  43. So San Lorenzo are trying to lure Collo back to Argentina again and now i read that Bramble is leaving Scumberland on a free this summer . Pardew wants expierenced players and Colo and Bramble are CB’S , oh ffs , i have a nasty feeling about this …………………its going to be a long hard summer .

      (Quote)

  44. Axel some of our fans are happy to get PL experienced players through the door or keep them. Bramble, Carlton Cole and Ben Haim are exactly the sort of players Pardew and some numpties would like to sign.

Thank fook we have a decent scout and generally decent transfer team around pardew.

  47. Well that announcement has got the blood racing. Aiming for 10th and above. Cabaye, Benny Colo Mbiwa Debuchy and Krul will be pulling themselves off in the shower tonight with that news.

      (Quote)

  48. I hope we get some decent players in over the summer ( thank **** pardew has nothing to do with transfers) but i have got a feeling now that Pardew has been confirmed safe this whole summer is going to be a negative **** storm. I think we could lose a few of our big players as well. Then we will be up **** creak come the start of the new season. I hope not of course. Until Pardew can show us that he can think positively and play positive football he deserves all the stick he has been getting and alot more.

I have been going for matches longer than most people have lived who comment on here and have accepted that I will never see a trophy lifted by a Newcastle captain. What I do want from Newcastle is entertainment and excitement. Sitting watching any of the games last season I was wishing my life away hoping the ninety minutes would go as quick as possible.
Managers the fans endeared themselves to Harvey, Robson,Cox,Keegan and even Ardilles despite him nearly putting us in the now league 1 was simply for the brand of football. This clown we have at the minute is very close to falling in the same bracket as Lee, Dinnis, Charlton, Souness and Allardyce
