What a load of old Wonga!

Cisse left at home
Cisse left at home
I was going to start getting back into the swing of things by writing up an analysis of the transfer market thus far this summer, however I’ve had to deviate from that idea.

Not purely because we’ve not done a lot in the transfer market, but mainly because we have problems in the striker department that have been heightened by the apparent breakdown of relations between United and star striker Papiss Cisse.

Long story short, Cisse is not happy about wearing the new club sponsor on his shirt as their exorbitant interest fees and charges go against his religion. The club are also not happy that he is currently refusing to wear the brand and with no agreement reached Cisse has found himself frozen out at what is arguably the most important time of the season for a professional football player.

Now I’m not so sure where I stand on this and I don’t want it to turn into one of those articles where religion is at the forefront of discussion. Yes Cisse has worn a short with Virgin Money on the front and on that basis there is little difference between one lending company and another, but companies like Wonga have come under ethical scrutiny in general just recently, even without the religious beliefs behind it.

At the end of the day a resolution needs to be found. There is precedent for a resolution as evidenced by Freddy Kanoute and Sevilla, with Kanoute being given special dispensation to not where the shirt of a gambling firm who sponsored the club. Surely something similar can be agreed upon in this instance?

Cisse’s argument is weakened further by the acceptance of his colleagues, some of whom are also Muslim, who seem happy enough to wear the shirt and the sponsor on the front of it. Does that mean Cisse has stronger beliefs than the rest of them?

I’m not interested in politics or religion in fairness, but I do feel slightly nervous about this one as it has such an impact on our team. Cisse is vital to us and even though he misses chances (as all strikers do I’ll add!) he still scores the bulk of our goals. Without him, or with him sat on the sidelines instead of being out on the pitch, where are they going to come from?

What’s going on?

  1. Could anyone answer me a question? Do we have any strikers currently that are part of the club and team that are capable of scoring at least 10 goals in a PL season?

Thinking with this current squad available to Pardew we probably have about 20 league goals in us. Does anyone think that would keep us up?

      (Quote)

  2. Stuart @77 No. If we lose Pappiss and don’t replace him with a quality striker we are lost. Still there are plenty will be happy to see him go as they never rated him anyways. 🙄 .I will be gutted to see us lose him but no one is bigger than the club ,I just don’t want them to replace him with Bent who is not as good imo .Bent would be a Shola replacement for me.

  3. Stuart based on individual stats eg mins per goal. I wrote this last thread

Looking at the stats if we get 5 or 6 goals from the back 5 we will have done well. Cabaye & Sissoke 5 or 6 each. HBA maybe 10, Gouffran a dozen and Cisse maybe 20. That’s 55-60 goals per season.

And back on earth on the reality is:

    – Cisse is unlikely to be playing for us
    – The defence haven’t got 5-6 goals between them in two seasons let alone one.
    – Cabaye scores 5 max if we’re lucky and Sissoko yes another 5
    – HBA has never scored ten goals in a season – NEVER! I don’t doubt he’s capable but he just hasn’t ever scored that amount of goals.
    – Gouffran – Well what has give you the impression he will score 12? He scored 1 I think in about 12 games last season.

Add them up and your 55 goals are a looking a bit stupid…

      (Quote)

  5. We scored 56 goals the season we finished 5th and 45 last season when Cisse had all those goals disallowed for offside. So we have enough goals for a top 10 finish.

  6. Believe nowt from nobody, not even my source 😉 …though believe me when I say Cisse likes his little trips to the casinos so devout he ain’t… I’m still hoping all this **** is more of a Ramadan thing though.

Off topic but has anyone used Al Jazeera for the footy coverage and if so, any good?

      (Quote)

  7. As I said that the numbers are based on their respective career stats in terms of goals per minute. To base i purely on last seasons disjointed efforts is not reasonable. You may just as well argue that Gouffran has scored 1 in 1 this season.

  8. No, but I use Samsung for my footy coverage… the picture is not too bad…

  10. It’s funny reading people arguing about who knows most about what’s going on when the fact is that nee ****** knows. The lines of communication from the club is that poor that everyone is left to assume.
We know that Pardew has Remy and Bent on his wish list because he had told us that himself but that’s about it – we know little to nothing else about what’s going on within the club – Cisse, recruitment or anything. That’s the only fact we have.
After that, it’s all down to faith and whether you believe that the club will recruit the players needed for next season.
Personally, I believe the club will sign Remy and Bent this window – but the rest will be one big surprise

You seem to forget 25% of them goals came from Ba. Where is he?

  12. Well I see us in a struggle this coming season as things stand but will be over the moon if we get off to a flyer and sustain good form . Remember our last 6 games are Man u ,Stoke ,Swansea,Arsenal ,Cardiff and Liverpool ,I see just one win ( Stoke ) from that and a possible draw from one of the welsh clubs if lucky due to their strengthening so far. So we’d better not get ourselves into another rellie scrap cause this time we won’t escape imo.

Blind faith is such a weak trait.

  14. Don’t forget also that the likes of Norwich, Sunderland, Villa and West Ham have improved their squad too and the managers have been backed. That means we go backwards down the table – opps, can we go any further down the table without being relegated?

Aussie…Sony’s better 😉 Just asking the Al J’ question because I can get the dish and set top box for €250, not sure about the viewing card price yet as they’ve just signed the Premier league broadcasting deal but it shouldn’t be anymore than €200 a year. They’ve got the rights to show every premier league game and also show just about every other league you’d want to see…apart from Germany…so if it all pans out, nae more shitty streams…somethings bound to go wrong! 😆

  17. Stuart. Grow up. we are talking about goals and where they come from and where they are in the team. The fact that the individual averages of each player in the team adds up to about 55 – 60 goals per season indicates that they are in the team.

Had you bothered to read my article, the last thread, and my associated comments you would realise that I don’t think we have enough goals to target the top 6. I would rather have another 10 in the stats. But no, you ask a question then abuse the guy who was polite enough to answer your question with some evidence to back up the reply. Next time you want help, look at your own ****, it seems to be where you are coming from. 👿

In addition, I love the way Aussie accuses others for reading posts without quotes and making assumptions and then asks us to read his own link which has no quotes. It’s a good news story though and Aussie believes those 😳 😳 😛

Forget looking at the past career goal tallies. Look at what they have done for NUFC not under 11’s in France.

  24. I don’t understand what the bloody problem is.
Those saying that Wonga are the same as others are wrong, plain and simple. However it is a grey, slightly hypocritical area when Cisse is ok with wearing one sponsor because it is “less bad” than the other.
However it’s his choice, if my employer made me wear something morally questionable that I didn’t want to (and it hadn’t been the case when I joined the company), I would refuse.
    The answer ❓
Simple, as loads of people have said: Let Cisse wear a blank shirt, even if it means receiving slightly less from Wonga.
Make a fcking statement about it immediately and then we can see whether it is genuinely a problem with Wonga or whether he wants to force a move.

Its at the point where I’m too **** scared to even come on the blog or browse through newsnow, just because it ruins my mood and my day.

So I’m just forgetting about who we buy, whose in charge. My opinion isn’t going to change jack **** anyway. So I’ll just wait till the season starts and then support whoever is on the pitch.

Not expecting much in the way of results or signings but I do hope that we at least play some football that entertains us a little bit. Not the stale **** that was served up last season.

  36. ST – that’s not really how it works though is it mate. Like I said the other day, what if 5-6 other players ethically don’t agree with Wonga and decide they don’t want to wear it – Wonga are then paying alot of money for advertisement on only half the team.
When you are employed and picking up a salary as Cisse is, sometimes you have to dot things you’re not entirely comfortable with – because lets be right, he gets paid a small fortune and didn’t really produce the goods on the pitch last season.
If he doesn’t want to then he hands in a transfer request – coz why should the club bend over backwards for players all of the time

      (Quote)

  37. Solano…In the eyes of his religion they are the same “plain and simple” that is the issue(allegedly) not what our personal view is of Wonga. He didn’t have any moral objection to wearing NR/Virgin money and making obscene amounts of money in the Barclays Premier league, not one of those sponsors is worse in the eyes of his religion than another. Again this may all be irrelevant in the event it’s not true, but if it is he can’t pick and choose when he wants to be devout and when not.

  39. Batty – Simmo wanted more money he wasnt deemed worth it; perchy I would have love to keep but he wants first team football you cant begrudge him that. Harps needed a change and got it.

These are good squad players but none would ever get in a squad in the top 8. Thats my point.

Your right though we havent replaced them but we havent replaced anyone yet….still hoping for JFK to pull his finger out

  43. Troy. Ba’s figures are marginally worse than Cisse’s so bringing him into the argument was irrelevant. I’ve based my stats on the best senior 11 in our squad. So to answer the question where are the goals coming from and how many should we expect, that is a valid approach and response. To muddy the water with players who have left etc and then claiming that is a flaw in the argument merely demonstrates a lack of logic. So no he’s not right, and neither are you. QED

Why can’t he? Most religious people draw lines. Most Christians don’t go to church on Sunday, but would still consider themselves religious, no?
We can’t decide where the line is drawn for him.
    @Sharpy
You can’t compare Virgin Money to Wonga, sorry you just can’t. No-one minded banks like NR before the world financial crisis ****** everyone over. The majority have always hated Wonga. It’s like comparing ****** to alcohol. Both wrong, one cause a lot of collaterall damage but generally people accept it, whereas the other is always just wrong.
Come on if your company forced you to wear something that you and 5 others morally objected to, surely the company would be in the wrong?
Just let the lad prove he wants to be at the club and let him wear a blank bloody shirt.

  48. Only Newcastle could make such an issue out of something. It is no wrecking our pre season. One of the big fucking problems last year was creating chances for Cisse, how the hell are we going to work on that if he isn’t even out there.
If 5/6 players had expressed the same problem then something else would have needed to have been done.
    It’s 1 player.
    Sevilla allowed Kanoute.
    Why can’t we allow Cisse?
I don’t know much about religion so I don’t what the particular thinking is as to why other companies are allowed by Cisse. But I also don’t care, it’s his beliefs, he can interpret it how he wants.
The club have once again screwed up the summer as this has now set the tone for our pre-season.

Aussie you know I enjoy your banter. You have a good sense of humour. Drop that Begas. He hinders you. 😆

      (Quote)

  50. Solano…Seriously, that’s your comparison? He’s “allegedly” objecting because they charge interest which is against his religious beliefs apparently, NR and Virgin and Barclays do the same, In the eyes of his religion they are all taboo and none is worse than the other, the amount of interest is irrelevant “pure and simple” therefore he can’t object to one without the other without being a huge hypocrite, there would be no logic to it, if you can’t see that then that’s fine, baffling but fine. There’s been enough said on it and it’s getting a bit monotonous saying the same thing over and over again. We each have our own opinions, I won’t hold it against you that yours is wrong 😉

      (Quote)

  51. Religion is one big hypocrisy. People interpret in whatever way they want. It doesn’t matter what we say or think, HE thinks it crosses a line. In the eyes of Christianity anyone that has sex before marriage is going to hell, do all Christians go along with that? They are all hypocrites but it’s their choice.
How about – he objected wearing Virgin and NR, but compromised his beliefs for the club/his career. But Wonga was just one step to far for him? Is that unreasonable?
You can surely agree that Wonga IS worse yeah?
I have the opinion that you accept one, you accept them all. But I completely understand if fans refused to go to matches based on Wonga sponsoring. They are scum.

      (Quote)

  52. ST…Reference Kanoute, despite what the press in UK would have you believe he did end up wearing the shirt after he was excused taking part in the publicity campaigns. I think it was only a couple of games he didn’t wear it whilst they sorted it out 😉
