Is it too late to be playing transfer games?

Too late for playing games?
Too late for playing games?
So once again Newcastle go after a player only for a deal between ourselves and the current club of a player to seem beyond reach.

This time it’s Bafetimbi Gomis that we’re unable to strike a deal for according to widespread reports in the press.

Am I concerned? Yes and no. One one hand we’ve seen this before with other players who we’ve been interested in. We won’t be bullied into paying more, things go quiet and we end up with the player in question at some point in the future, so in that sense I’m almost convinced this is just all part of the game between Newcastle and Lyon and wouldn’t be surprised if this wasn’t the last we heard about Gomis this summer.

On the other hand, as commendable as our stance on transfers is from time to time, the fact remains that time is running out in the transfer market and whilst there is still a month to go until the window ‘slams’ (it always slams, never closes gently or anything like that!) shut the season draws ever closer and we’re losing a chance to get any new players bedded in before the big kick-off in just under three weeks time.

The difference in sums we’re talking about is probably in the region of a couple of million quid, which is a lot to you and me but it’s peanuts in terms of Premier League football. Is it not worth perhaps just saying, due to sheer desperation, that we should take a hit on this one and stop relatively splitting hairs over a transfer fee?

I’m sure a few more bob won’t push us over the precipice and into financial ruin. Say what you like about Ashley but he wouldn’t let that happen which is some comfort at least. Sometimes though you can’t have everything your own way and you need take a bit of a punt, which is something Newcastle seemingly don’t like doing when it comes to transfers.

Going back to what I said at the start, I’m almost certain that this won’t be the last we hear of Gomis in this transfer window and it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if we saw him added to the squad before the end of the transfer window, but I just feel that United are leaing it late in the day to be playing these kind of transfer games.

Anyone agree?

  2. ‘Gomis At NEWCASTLE CAN BE ACCELERATED. Reportedly, Newcastle is preparing to make an offer of € 8,000,000 excluding bonuses at Olympique Lyonnais Bafetimbi Gomis. The Rhone president Jean-Michel Aulas seems determined to move quickly on this issue, which could even be set today.’

Eurosport are very reputable and it’s from their French office. I don’t see why they’d claim it without knowing something.

    Kristan Heneage ‏@KHeneage
Claiming a bid of €8million + bonuses and that the transfer could be completed as quick as today.

    Kristan Heneage ‏@KHeneage
The Eurosport story is exactly why Aulas is so complex. Seems he may have caved to pressure and now just wants rid of Gomis. #NUFC

  3. @BD

not including the 50k fans every week. We don’t even need to do a Sunderland or a Norwich, just a few players should make a decent squad even better..

  4. mike ashley put 267 million of his own money to stop the club going the same way as leeds or portsmouth. thats what there excuse for not signing anyone

  5. M – I’ll have some of that mate €8m is about £6.8m (ish), which is a good price IMO.
Remy won’t be far behind him I reckon.
Gomis and Remy would be 2 very good signings in my opinion to be fair.

  6. @Sharpy17

do you honestly think mike will buy 2 strikers 😯

7mil to sit on the bench?

I love to see it but it could be disastrous for the club having 3 quality strikers, we mite end up in Europe 😛

I reckon one plus maybe a winger and we’re finished buying..

  7. Mark – it’s certainly looking that way mate. Only he’s not signing 2, he’s signing one and loaning the other by the sounds of it. But if we sign both then great.
If we get both in though I think Shola may be moved on and Campbell would defo be loaned out.
A strike force of Cisse, Gouffran, Gomis and Remy wouldn’t be too shabby at all.

  8. @Sharpy.

I’d be over the moon with that strike force, not forgetting Barfa when needed up front..

I still think we’ll remain stringent and sign only what we need.. in Mikes eyes, a replacement for Ba.

  9. Mark – do you not think Ashley would see selling Shola for £2-3m and getting his wages off our books and replacing him with the loaning signing of Remy as good business?

He’d get the cash, Pardew would get a better player and the fans would get a CF that could actually score a goal!…. provided he doesn’t get done for rape like

  10. If Ashley can get 2-3mil for Shola I’d buy Remy. 😛 Someone may be reluctant to take Shola for free on a 1yr contract 😛

  11. latest crack is Remy Is going to w/ham 6mil, how true don’t know,Sam did say on SSN that they are signing one more striker

      (Quote)

  12. Mark – that was the sort of figure mentioned when he was linked with a move to Sheff Wed and Boro mate. Burnley have a few quid in their pockets now with the Austin sale.
Shola could score goals in the Championship for problem. Okay okay – call it £1m and we’ll have a deal 😆

  13. 😉 500k with add on bonuses of a fiver if he makes it past 15games.

but youre right mate. if we have any ambition we need to sign 2 players.. gomis + a loan deal for Remy would be sweet..

  17. The heed as in Gatesheed?. I’ll probably found at Kingston Park than SJP to be honest mate.
I got to go to a 20/20 cricket match down at CLS the other day as well mate. I’m not a huge cricket fan but the 20/20 set up was pretty decent to be fair mate.

Can’t believe I’ve lost it just as we are on the verge of a double signing 🙁

  23. QPR want to be careful listening to that saggy faced hideous tax dodging vermin they are overpaying to be their manager. He won’t be around this time next year if they are stuck in the championship with a **** load of top earners they can’t shift and baliffs kicking their door down.

Portsmouth, southampton and west ham all had big financial trouble after his time at their clubs ended and it will be on a much grander scale at loftus road if they aren’t promoted this season.

Let sense prevail Remy on an initial loan which will definately be made permanant if and when he is cleared in court…

      (Quote)

  24. CC , I agree any club who pays up front knowing what’s hanging over him are mugs ,I hope we don’t do it as it would be just our luck he has to go to court.

  27. i think we’re quite safe with Remy on loan unless someone is stupid enuf to buy him outright. Saggyflaps can beg all he wants for 8 mill but who would pay that with a rape case hanging over his head. Fernadez will have the final say. It might go to the wire but i reckon we’ll hang on in there if Gomis is a no-no.

  28. Watched the Audi Cup final on TV yesterday from Munich, FC Bayern 2 Man City 1. Man City look like a real handful with a really strong line up. They ‘ll batter us on the first day of the season 🙁

It’s so nice to see proper football being played pre-season. Not this pish farting around playing against Portugese unknowns or average scottish reserve sides. Man City will hit the ground running while our lot are still fumbling around …. the toon are run by a bunch of amatuers from owner to manager. 👿

  29. Just on the Remy thing and Redknapp saying they wont loan him out. Tony fernandes tweeted this about 7 hrs ago (I’m sure it was 7hrs ago as checked his twitter page)
“Doesn’t matter where a player goes if its a different league and a loan”

“Some players want to play in the Premier League due to World Cup. Loans are a good option.”
Could be good news for a Remy loan.
