Newcastle dealt more blows in transfer market

Frozen out at Villa and priced out at Newcastle
Frozen out at Villa and priced out at Newcastle
Newcastle have been dealt more blows in their efforts to bolster the squad ahead of the coming season.

One of them I can understand and one of them I can’t, but both aren’t exactly helpful in our search to add striking options to the squad.

First off it’s been revealed that we won’t offer more than £2 million for Darren Bent with Aston Villa looking for closer to £6 million so we’re some way off on that one, and secondly we’ve been told that the only chance of us getting Loic Remy here at Newcastle is if we buy him off QPR who are reluctant to let him leave on loan as they want to recoup most of the cash they paid for him in January.

Now starting with the second one, I can see both sides of the argument. Some might say that United are penny-pinching again but on this one I beg to differ and would suggest that we’re just being sensible. At the end of the day this is a a player who could very well end up in prison by the turn of the year depending on how an investigation into an alleged gang rape pans out so I can see why there is a reluctance to spend a bulk of cash on buying him.

The one with Darren Bent is more interesting however and gives us a bit more insight, perhaps, into why we struggle to do a deal. Our lowball offers have upset the Bent camp and Kinnear’s admission that Bent would get nowhere near the £65,000 a week he picks up at Aston Villa haven’t exactly greased the wheels.

Now I’d rather we pursued other strikers ahead of Bent but it still doesn’t change the fact that we’re messing him about. He might not be first choice in our list of attacking options but does it mean we’re right to offer such low figures, particularly when he’s been whored out publicly enough for most to know that our offer would be nowhere near good enough. It’s almost like we’re trying to look busy rather than actually be busy. On the other hand, if you don’t ask then you don’t get I suppose.

It’s frustrating the hell out of me to be honest and I’m not alone on that one as the vast majority of us are in the same boat. Two weeks away from the start of the season and we’re still the only club not to sign a senior player says a lot to me and none of it is good. Remember we only just avoided relegation last season.

We need players soon or else we’re going to struggle again next term when injuries hit or when a form crisis looms. We have no options, no alternative and whilst I have the greatest faith in Papiss Cisse it’s surely not good to put all of the pressure on his shoulders?

I guess we’ll just have to carry on waiting…

  2. Even I’m getting anxious about the lack of movement in the transfer market. I’d still put money on Gomis coming in, though. Let’s hope it’s this season. 😆

And speaking of getting players in 😀 … still need 15 more people to make a fantasy league. Come on, guys, there were about 200 on the all-in fantasy group last season. Surely some of you want a different competition.

  3. its pretty obvious Ashley has no intention of spending any money this summer. Kinnear was brought in to protect Pardew from the fans and allow him to concentrate on the team, the whole things been set up so as when no one comes in everyone tears Kinnear to pieces while Pardew cracks on. Ashley is clever with his money, if he was planning on spending any then you can bet your life Kinnear would be no where near the set up.

  4. Regarding Bent, I don’t want us signing the guy to be honest, but at the end of the day we absolutely need a second striker, so if it is Bent so be it. However, it seems as if everyone is “struggling” to get him over the line. Let’s be honest, if the right offer arrived he would be gone by now. But he isn’t, with the most probable hindrance being his huge wage demands. So it’ll pan out to be another Alan Smith scenario where he doesn’t give a flying flock about playing footy and sits on the bench and picks up the wedge. Perhaps Bento on loan would also work ?

Regarding Remy, Ashley is waiting to see who blinks first. It’s obvious that the bloke won’t play for QPR in the Championship especially in a world cup season. So he’ll wait to see if his preferred club Spurs want to take him, before the toon get the chance to pick him up as second best, most probably on loan. It looks as if the on-off Bale to Madrid / Ronaldo to Man Utd carousel may be the catalyst to start the last minute transfer rush.

    Penny pinching at it’s finest…

No Bent, no remy and possibly still gomis.

At least we havent lost any players……… 😯 😯

The French government announced yesterday that it has raised its terror alert level from “Run” to “Hide.” The only two higher levels in France are “Collaborate” and “Surrender.” The rise was precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France’s white flag factory, effectively paralyzing Newcastle’s football capability.

  9. lets not waffle on here and just say it as it is… ashley is fat **** and hates NUFC and simply wants to milk the club for money with zero investment. We had not enough players last season ffs.. so what have we done so far this season… got rid of three more first team players – and trying to get rid of even more if gosling can be shipped out, plus loaned out several more. Not bit part players but integral to the team. Elliot is a **** keeper and i would have prefered to keep harps also. The TV money has gone through the roof this season and all we have done is cut the wage bill even further. It sounds harsh but i think Ashley does not deserve to own a prem team and my money is on us in a season long relegation fight and tbh… its exactly what we deserve. to do nothing is to go backwards….we scraped by last season but this season with a weaker team again… i dont think we will stay up.

  10. MMag…. i agree about bent but why does AP keep on saying that he wants him when he is fully aware we are putting in offers we know will never be accepted? it was only a couple of weeks ago he slagged down blanc for saying that cabs ‘was an interesting player’… saying blanc should not talk in public about another teams players…. well fuk me.. its all pardwho ever does…he talks everyone up and for what reason?? its utter **** and all spin. He may as well say we are in for Messi and Neymar but Baca would not accept 5 million for the pair. all al bunch of wankers in it together, thick as thieves taking the **** out of geordies. They must think we are utter morons as no matter how **** they treat the club, we keep on following in lbind faith like lost sheep…fuk ashley, fuk ap and fuk kinear…get out of the north east you scum bastards.

  12. What do we all expect it is cheaper for Mr Ashley to put a Buffoon in charge of transfers, he knows that he will open his mouth and put everyone off. JFK is acting exactly like anyone who is out of his depth and has been promoted ahead of his competence, shouting the odds at everyone as to how good he is in the hope that some idiot will believe him. He tells a story over and over until he believes it himself like anyone out of their depth. What skills has he demonstrated in the past to enable him to take the lead role in negotiations, that is unless of cours Mr Ashley wants no transfers and for petty cash to him can leave JFK to mess things up then get rid of him when the transfer window closes.
Just accept we will get ‘no one over the line and we tried so hard, but we would not be held to ransome’ If we stay in the PL Mr Ashley will be happy. No transfers means he can start taking money out of the club although he has no need to if he does not need a salary at SD he does not need an income at NUFC. It is a toy that he will dispose of when the time is right for him.
No amount of shouting from the fans will change him he laughs at us the same way he laughs at the stock market just do a bit of research and see what the retail industry think about him just the same as us.

My friend is a regular there and tells me that the land lord has a rule that if anyone asks Ashley about football they get barred. He told me that he was in there this week when Ashley and pals were, and he tried to listen in to their conversation to get me some inside gossip, said they talked about Sports Direct all night and the only Newcastle related thing he heard was Ashley laughing when someone called Joe Kinnear “Newcastles Minister of Culture”.

  15. Toonsy ,Thanks for the new article. Yes it’s worrying ,I just don’t understand how after our dismal last season we can be weakening the team further and not seemingly have learnt any lessons. We are penny pinching on an unbelievable scale with regard for to the calibre of player we are going for. We are Newcastle united ffs ,ok we may not be top four but we are sure as hell better and bigger than Norwich ,but by god you wouldn’t think it going by ambition. I am seriously concerned now and anyone who isn’t is in serious fecking denial imo. We have to be certs for relegation at the moment as although we have some first class players we are terrible short up front and should we get our usual glut of injuries we are Donald ducked make no mistake. I am starting to wonder if the club is on the verge of being sold as this inaction makes no sense to me ,it’s beyond foolish the way we have been carrying on and frankly if the status quo remains we deserve to go down. I hate that fat **** so much he simply has to sell up before he ruins us.

  16. Yeah, but Bent will sit tight and take the wedge. He’s not bothered about playing.

Craig, I agree 100% about Ashley. He’s just going to milk the club and get on with it. He is one of the owners in on it purely to make money. You better batten down the hatches mate, because it’s going to be another ugly season.

This is the first time EVER in my life that I am not really looking forward to a new season. The way these penny pinching zillionaires and incompetent buffoons are making our club look like a cheap bucket shop is really infuriating. The eleoquence of our legendary Director of ****all was the final straw for me..

  19. Despite all of JFK’s hilarity we only need two strikers to make our squad complete? Any others are luxuries at this moment.

Two strikers will arguably make our squad the strongest its been for years?

    Krul, Elliott
    Debuchy, Santon
    Colo, Taylor
    Mbwia, Willo
    Hiadara, Dummett
    HBA, Jonas
    Cabaye, Tiote
    Sissoko, Anita
    Marv, Obertan
    Cisse, Ameobi
    Gouffran, Campbell

Clearly we could do with replacing pretty much all the English; Elliott, willo, Ameobi but also Obertan and Jonas. However we are never going to sign 6 players so if we signed 2 strikers to lob ameobi / campbell / obertan out of the equation suddenly we have a 22 man squad that looks top ten.

      (Quote)

  20. My own personal take on this whole heap of shoyt is that the amount of money involved in EPLfootball these days is quite hideous. Average players are being touted as 10 million pound players. Let’s be honest, 20 mill for HBA, 15 mill for Tiote, 20 mill for Cabaye !! 100 mill for Balle FFS !!!!!!!! Money has absolutely destroyed football now.
The crazy transfer fees seem to have cropped up in the course of the last 3-4 years. Throw in the fact that EVERYONE wants to make money on this, so the players quite simply won’t move unless everything is just right.
Ashley is not into playing this big spending game. End of story. He’ll go the route of the cheap players from europe coming in , and doing just enough to keep us in the EPL. His mates Pardew and Kinnear are in on it too. The guy has no ambition other than making loads of money, fair enough if you ask me. Pardew doesn’t have it in him to perform better than he did last season. Ashley is picking up easy money, 60 mill from Sky alone. He must be mental to sell the club now that he has skinned the club to the bone. We all know that the owner lacks sporting ambition.
Survival in the EPL is all that counts. The rest is all just waffle.

      (Quote)

  21. Every potential transfer follows the same pattern, its almost as if they have a blue print for the perfect failed transfer.

    – player is linked in the paper/internet
    – pardew talks about interest in the player for a few weeks
    – we hear about us being in contact with the player/club but with no real proof
    – we hear of bids being placed & terms being agreed, again with no real proof
    – then another club comes in and completely trumps us on wages and fee and the player signs up with them

This whole process creates the illusion that we’re actually trying to sign someone whilst eating away at the time left till the window closes.

Make no mistake, every one of them knows no money will be spent, its all about stringing us along in the most believable way, managing our expectations and attempting to keep a lid on the fan fury which is just about at exploding point.

Just a couple more weeks and then they can all kick back and relax until the whole process starts again January.

  22. Liam@23. That squad is filled with a bunch of average players mate, who were at the thick end of nigh on getting us relegated last season. In fact quite a few of them had there thumbs firmly stuck in the pie during our last relegation. Throw in the fact that the kids have NOT progressed at all, with the decimation of our squad, and the fact that our own decent but much hyped French midfield “star” wants to be elsewhere, then it’s going to be a tough season imo..
14th place and a bunch of money in Ashley’s back pocket is all we can hope for this season.

      (Quote)

  23. Evans@28, I agree on several of your points. However, this season i fear that Pardew may get even less time to sort things out than he did last season. I reckon if we get off to a gash start, say over the first ten games, then the crowd will get rid of Pardew and we’ll have the legendary Kinnear in charge. 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  24. MM – there are 10 internationals in the starting eleven? The frenchies who signed in Jan need time to adapt; hiadara and dummett look good in terms of youngsters and that midfield on paper is top 6 alone?

We cant change what the situation is with Ashley or JFK for that matter but we can have a little positivity

      (Quote)

  27. Liam – I appreciate the 5 signings in January goes against what I’ve just said but I think even Ashley knows the club won’t survive in the prem unless he signs the odd player, as was proven when we nearly went down last season.

The players signed in January were a last ditch attempt at rectifying last summers mistakes (last summers activity runs in line with what I suggested earlier). I don’t believe we’d have made any signings in January had we been 10 points above the relegation places in December last year.

My point is they know when they’re not in the market for players yet they string us along with all this feigned interest and these hoax bids. I’ve been following football and Newcastle for nearly 20 years and I’ve never seen another club act this way regarding transfers, we invented it, the fake transfer.

      (Quote)

  28. Liam@30, why did we escape relegation by the skin of our teeth then, and that with Ba’s goals in the team ?
I’m sceptical and waiting to be convinced otherwise. Internationals are internationals…France aren’t the european force they once were, and Cabaye, upon whom we are pinning a lot of our creative hopes, can’t take a free kick or a corner to save his life… 👿

      (Quote)

  29. MM – dont forget its a world cup year. Our frenchies should be busting a lung to get there which is why is surpising more of them havent left. You cant blame near relegation on the players as quite simply we barely played the same team each week last year and a mutlitude of factors such as europa also played a part in our demise.

Plus don’t forget that the klug scheisse Pardew managed to get us knocked out of both domestic competitions at an early stage so we could concentrate on…er… near relegation…

  32. I expect all 5 of the Frenchies to be much better this season. They all struggled with the pace of the PL, continually getting caught on the ball or hustled off it. Plus they were thrown in to a relegation battle with out of form or barely fit players and a truly **** manager. 2 good signings, which there is no hint of yet, and we’ll be top 8. Higher if it wasn’t for Pardew.

  36. I am surpised ashley didnt go after redknapp again now hes in the championship

      (Quote)

  37. I think we will end up signing Gomis.

As for Bent, he is surplus to Villas requirements and barely played at all last season. Hes 29yr old and his pre season is with the youth team and Lambert has made it clear he’s not wanted at Villa. So if Fulham pay £5-6m and pay him 50k or more p/w then they’re crazy.
Whilst I think Bent could still do a job, at 29 he’s maybe got 2-3 seasons left playing top level – and that’s not going to be week in week out. So maybe what we’ve offered isn’t SO ridiculous.

Regarding Remy, I’m with Olivier Bernard on this one. I think the lad is a cracking player and exactly the type of player our squad needs.
The problem is this rape charge, and the most sensible thing to do is try and loan him with the option to buy. But I understand why QPR wouldn’t want that and we may be faced with a decision of do we risk it and buy him or do we walk away.
I think we should take the risk to secure a quality player for £8m, but I know that we’ll miss out and walk away again.

So if we do, what about trying to loan or buy Scott Sinclair from Man City or Victor Moses from Chelsea?

      (Quote)

  38. MM – aye!

If remy didnt come I wouldnt be devastated with sinclair? At least he is English aswell! 😀

They will sign Soldado, then they have £8m off Caulker and £80m plus off the sale of Bale.
Might they come sniffing round Cabaye and Benny?
I think the difference between Spurs and us is that they WILL spend that money on players

      (Quote)

  40. @Sharpy – I’ve been thinking much the same about Remy.

But surely there’s nothing to stop us buying him, and putting a clause in his contract that terminates his employment if he goes down?

      (Quote)

  41. 26 Mil for Soldado and 21 for Costa, I really don’t understand the markets anymore.

Howay lads cheer up, we’ll get someone over the line…I just hope we don’t lose anyone. Nowt about a new contract for Benny either, said it was vital to tie him up this season, because he’ll be sold next summer at this rate 😕

      (Quote)

  42. Blip – there’s not, but why would he sign it?
If he comes to us and gets sent down he doesn’t get paid and doesn’t have a club. But he has a contract at QPR at the moment where he’d continue to be employed, so it wouldn’t make sense for him to do that.
The loan contract with QPR could have that clause built into it – as in if he gets send away we cut the loan short and he’s your problem – but again, why would QPR do that. That’s probably why ‘Arry is on about £2m up front for any loan deal.
I think the Remy thing could be very complicated for an experience DoF or chairman to sort through – so Joes ******.
That’s why I reckon it may be better to switch our attentions to Sinclair or Moses or Niang.

      (Quote)

  43. Newkie – that’s my fear with Spurs and all that cash. If they come in for Benny (and I know that’s not been reported, but they’ll want to replace Bale), his contract is not sorted and they could nick him.
Neggar I know but the way things are going at the moment it wouldn’t be unrealistic IMO.

      (Quote)

  44. Sharpy that’s right about Remy. Any deal will have pitfalls. A loan to buy immediately if he’s cleared? And if he does go down then what? Good job we’ve got a sharp mind to work these things out. Right Joe?

  51. You have to hand it to Spurs, they are a club who seem to be really well run. They have a really good policy of bringing in players and selling them on at a profit, and reinvesting the money in players at the club, whilst still moving the club forward. I’d say they are a well established top 4 – 8 club now, and most definitely on a par with there London rivals Arsenal. Arsenal will also start to spend big now, and they will need to do so to have a chance of hanging onto that last top 4 spot which is still up for grabs.
The big loser in all of this is the perennial basket case Liverpool who will have to make do with a spot between 5 – 8, most probably knocking on the door of a Champs League spot, but ultimately missing out to the general spending power of Man City, Man Utd and Chelsea. The humourous thing is that they will genuinely believe they are a top club, and spend money like crazy, but just won’t make it imo.
That leaves a bunch of big spenders like Man City, Chelsea, Man United, Spurs, Arsenal and Liverpool. Our lot have absolutely no interest at all in taking up that challenge, and whereas spending money doesn’t always bring success, not spending money doesn’t bring much success either 🙁 A dodgy club in there may be Man Utd, who may not necessarily have a smooth transition from the SAF to David Moyes era. They may have a hiccup this season which leaves them vulernable to the rest of the top 6.

Factor in the Pardew “we always play on the front foot” ….ahem….factor, together with our prudent spending policy, and we aint looking higher than 8 – 10 in my opinion. Still a lot better than last seasons debacle, but not really what a proud toon fan wants to see. However, still, not too bad for an average EPL club.

  58. Oh, just seeing the Ryder story. 2M for a one year loan fee? Is that normal practice? I don’t really know how loans work, to be honest.

  59. MM@62-Think that pretty much sums it up pal. It’s not where anyone wants to be but realistically we’ll only be battling for 7th at best, two years ago was some crazy form coupled with shocking season for Chelski. I can accept that as a general league rule-so long as we’re never as close to the drop (even if the points dif between us and 9th was barely anything) however we have to at least look like we’re making progress-on youth + recruitment fronts, on actual profits and projects for the future and importantly-in F.A cup matches. We just seem to edge a profit and go nowhere with anything else, which is a disgrace really.

  60. FSOTC-2 mil would be great if we didn’t put anything towards his wages, but I’m assuming they want both? You have to think that if we paid his wages for a whole season we’d be paying about 3 mil anyway…a 2 mil fee plus that is getting ridiculous.

  61. it makes perfect sense to ask for 2 million for remi.. he has 4 years left on his deal… they want 8 million for him for outright purchase.. that equates to 2 million for each year left… makes total sense. we are basically after buying a player on a one year deal.
