Newcastle dealt more blows in transfer market

Frozen out at Villa and priced out at Newcastle
Frozen out at Villa and priced out at Newcastle
Newcastle have been dealt more blows in their efforts to bolster the squad ahead of the coming season.

One of them I can understand and one of them I can’t, but both aren’t exactly helpful in our search to add striking options to the squad.

First off it’s been revealed that we won’t offer more than £2 million for Darren Bent with Aston Villa looking for closer to £6 million so we’re some way off on that one, and secondly we’ve been told that the only chance of us getting Loic Remy here at Newcastle is if we buy him off QPR who are reluctant to let him leave on loan as they want to recoup most of the cash they paid for him in January.

Now starting with the second one, I can see both sides of the argument. Some might say that United are penny-pinching again but on this one I beg to differ and would suggest that we’re just being sensible. At the end of the day this is a a player who could very well end up in prison by the turn of the year depending on how an investigation into an alleged gang rape pans out so I can see why there is a reluctance to spend a bulk of cash on buying him.

The one with Darren Bent is more interesting however and gives us a bit more insight, perhaps, into why we struggle to do a deal. Our lowball offers have upset the Bent camp and Kinnear’s admission that Bent would get nowhere near the £65,000 a week he picks up at Aston Villa haven’t exactly greased the wheels.

Now I’d rather we pursued other strikers ahead of Bent but it still doesn’t change the fact that we’re messing him about. He might not be first choice in our list of attacking options but does it mean we’re right to offer such low figures, particularly when he’s been whored out publicly enough for most to know that our offer would be nowhere near good enough. It’s almost like we’re trying to look busy rather than actually be busy. On the other hand, if you don’t ask then you don’t get I suppose.

It’s frustrating the hell out of me to be honest and I’m not alone on that one as the vast majority of us are in the same boat. Two weeks away from the start of the season and we’re still the only club not to sign a senior player says a lot to me and none of it is good. Remember we only just avoided relegation last season.

We need players soon or else we’re going to struggle again next term when injuries hit or when a form crisis looms. We have no options, no alternative and whilst I have the greatest faith in Papiss Cisse it’s surely not good to put all of the pressure on his shoulders?

I guess we’ll just have to carry on waiting…

  1. Newkie@72 me old cocker, that’s the way it is mate. There is a league of crazies with money to spend, and there are clubs like the toon who just aren’t interested in that kind of financial involvement. Sad but true. Our one saving grace each season will be to finish above the makkems every season and then we’ll be happy….

Just bough a 6 pack of bullshit-deflectors for the next couple of seasons…

Thank goodness we have FC Bayern to fall back on 😉 😉

  2. Craig-given he can be locked up come September I wouldn’t really call it total sense from our point, but depending on QPRs thoughts of how it will end you’d assume they are confident of not guilty otherwise they would have been trying harder to ship him…

  3. Munich-Have you abandoned Dortmund already then? Some fan you are 😆

But yeah, competing at the top is beyond us now. And the owners of those clubs only seem to get more interested i.e Chelsea/City/Liverpool with their outlay. With Arsenal it remains to be seen if they are just trying to look busy or whether they want to try and fight for the league. The sad truth is we have to wait for these clubs to slip up before we can take advantage. If Spurs lose bail and invest poorly and likewise with Liverpool and Suarez, maybe we can make some ground on them. But it really doesn’t look like we will this season whatever happens there 😕

You’ll need to know more about loans with our new sponsor influencing things 😉
Tbh I think the deals that are required will get over the line but I’m not sure that they’ll all be in time for the new season. I think we will get Gomis in some time next week and will fanny on with Remy for two weeks before a loan (including cash) with the option to buy is agreed following the City match.

I wouldn’t be so confident about FC Bayern mate, I’ve got a strong feeling that Guardiola is going to ****** them up and show that he’s a really overrated coach. I you never rule out Kloppy 😉 .

  8. M ,Pretty sure Spuds will get him now ,Levy is a canny negotiator unlike our DOF . 😳

Looking like Bent Fulham bound now (thankfully) all rest on Gomis and his greedy parasitic agent then 🙄

Is there anyone else at the bottom of the barrel we can scrape by with 😕 ❓

  9. Do Spurs want remy though? Wouldn’t they have wanted and got him at the start of the window if they did? Seems odd to go in for him just to make up the numbers though, Spurs are usually a bit more progressive than that. Maybe Defoe wants away?

      (Quote)

  10. Kim-timing on that 😆

I like Defoe but he’s in the same class as Bent in that if we had him, playing both him and Cisse would be redundant, although Defoe is a bit of a better dribbler they would still be quite like for like and rarely make chances for one another. Would be handy backup but would much prefer gomis/remy to come in.

      (Quote)

  11. Newkie ,Defoe is miles better than Bent imo. Reads the game better and takes his goals better too, I would love him at Toon ,at say £4/5m would be a steal.

      (Quote)

  12. Kim-but he will be 31 in a few months, while bent was 29 earlier this year. Bent at least has a bit more time to prove value for money given that if we got either they probably wouldn’t be sold on again. I prefer Defoe but I think we need a striker with some muscle on him, defoe can be quite nippy but he’s not really that fast over a decent distance and he’ll only get slower.

Plus, he’s definitely not the answer to our set piece woes 😆

Also had a chuckle when I read twitchys back tracking on Remy. Looks like hell be leaving on loan after all let’s hope were first in line…

  19. Liam-if we got Remy in, possibly sinclair or a winger and didn’t lose anyone this would be a “terrific” summer for us, all things considered. One thing I will say about Kinnear-if he has had a hand in loaning out our players then he has done well, because for too long they were left to rot in our reserves.

  25. Kim – you’re right, it’s absolute madness isn’t it. Hopefully it could be a positive thing for Coventry though. I know that sounds daft, but if you watch that Swansea thing, they had to hit rock bottom before things improved for them, were Pompey in a similar position and they look ok now and Palace had their problems and they’re in the PL now. It’s sad for Coventry, I always had a soft spot for them and their shinny badge was always one of the hardest ones to get when I was a kid collecting panini stickers 🙄

Gomis is big strong striker with some talent, but misses a lot & often flatters to deceive. Still, could flourish in right conditions #NUFC

    Matt Spiro ‏@mattspiro 1h
Have to say €8m is good price for player with 1 yr left on contract. #NUFC also paying silly money if theyve met Gomis’ €400k-a-month demand

  27. CC& SHARPY , I was half watching SSN 92 club jaunt yesterday and the visit to Portsmouth was interesting ,So many fans dedicated to putting the club right again .That club was stripped bare ,all of it gone ,trophies the whole **** caboodle .Fans are finding stuff in lofts and atics and being sold on ebay. They are buying up all sorts and putting it into their trophy room .They had a fan painting Pompey legends on the wall ,doubtless for free as well .It was a real feel good factor going on and just goes to prove that no matter how feckless owners abuse and use a club the fans are the one constant that keeps it alive. Good luck to them and Coventry fans I say .

  28. We’re guilty of gullibility on here as usual. Two obvious examples: the supposed £2M offered for Bent – completely unsubstantiated and against all logic. Nobody would do it, and if they did they wouldn’t let the press know – so why are we believing it?
JFK being an utter ***** and screwing the deal, yes. That I’ll believe every time. Offering half the amount allegedly already turned down and obviously a fraction of anything likely to be accepted… no. And yet we kick off this discussion thinking it’s true.
Then there’s this €400k a month thing. From a FRENCH footballer. There are top flight teams in France on less than that between them.
Stop being so gullible – it’s embarrassing!!

      (Quote)

  29. With that rant out of the way, my thoughts:
    – Bent… meh. Would like to see him here (god knows we need Englishmen), but only if the deal is right and only if we minimise, as someone already put it, the chances of another Alan Smith situation. The suggestion that they’re stringing him along to help negotiations elsewhere doesn’t seem impossible, either.
    – Remy – ‘Arry is taking the mick as usual; he knows the only option open to them with a jail term hanging over their player is a loan – unless they let him go for a risk-balancingly tiny fee. They are not in a strong position. He’ll go on loan.. not sure whether it’ll be to us, but I suspect so.
    – Gomis – Interesting quotes from their owner. If the figures he’s spouting are correct, any accusation of Ashley penny-pinching on the deal are b.s. I’d actually be quite annoyed that we’d paid that much for someone worth ****-all in 12 months. But right now… I’d take it anyway.

      (Quote)

  30. @124 re. the tweet that mentioned the 400k, the point is (in case u missed it) an ‘expert’ on French football suggested Gomis would not be worth it. ie ‘he’s not that good’

  31. Where does it say we’re going to pay him that much a week? The guys just saying that’s what he asked for

  32. French taxes on players are much higher than England, right? So there’s bound to be some wrangling around that.

Maybe getting this one deal done breaks the logjam and we get a flurry of activity now (he said more in hope than expectation).

      (Quote)

  33. Isn’t it 75% top rate tax in France. 40% here. I think this one will happen. Whether he’s any good – we’ll see.

      (Quote)

  34. It doesn’t matter about taxes! All I’m saying is, why the hell would you believe it? We know it’s all garbage spouted by people just wanting to see how far their made-up guess can go round the twatosphere.

I mean: how the hell would he know?? Is there any likely-sounding chain of events that would lead to some French “football expert” knowing how much Gomis had demanded in wages behind closed doors? And if there was, what logic suggests that he’d be after that kind of dosh, when we know he’s probably on a third of that right now and has no more reason to expect daft money than any of the other French players who’ve gone to NUFC.

Just weigh up the logic of each side, and it’s bloody obvious that these figures are utter *****. They almost always are.

      (Quote)

  35. I think we’ll get Gomis permanently, keep Cisse and get one of the other two; probably Remy.
I also think Remy may turn out to be just as much of an utter **** as Barton (a tall order, I know), which is why I hope we don’t buy him outright. A loan with 1st-choice purchase option would be fine.

  39. Well I was hoping to come back from holidays to learn we had brought in a couple of good players. It seems we haven’t though. 2M pounds for Bent is worse than a joke and why should QPR loan us Remy. Kinnear must still be smoking the good stuff he bought on his holiday. Nothing changes at the club it seems. Spurs just bought Soldado and we offer 2M for Bent. 👿

that was my point @116 anyway 😛

  42. GEORDIETWO – again, which is more likely? That some bloke with a Twitter account has special access to the negotiating room, or that he’s just another *** making up numbers to play on our opinion of JFK and get his name out?

  44. M – cheers for that clarification. Point taken. I don’t have any reason to believe him though – especially as he appears to pluck daft numbers out of the air and state them as fact.
