Aston Villa v Newcastle – Premier League match preview

Premier League football returns this weekend as Newcastle visit Aston Villa following on from an early season international break.

It’s a welcome return to football after another disappointing transfer which us add just one senior player on a temporary basis although we did retain the services of Yohan Cabaye who in the end didn’t move anywhere.

Good or bad or whatever your view on the transfer window in general, I’m glad it’s gone. We can at least concentrate on football now with little uncertainty until January rolls around. We know what we have to use at our disposal and, like it or not, that now can’t be changed until the New Year and the whole destabilising affair can start again.

Aston Villa:

Paul Lambert will be without former Magpies Charles N’Zogbia and Stephen Ireland for the visit of Newcastle. N’Zogbia is out after having surgery on an Achilles injury over the summer whilst Ireland has joined Stoke on loan.

Lambert may also opt to give a debut to Libor Kozak. The 6ft 4in tall Czech striker, who signed on deadline day from Lazio for a fee of Β£7m, top scored in the Europa League last season scoring 8 goals in the competition.

It’s better news for United who have a host of names available once more. Steven Taylor has completed his three match game following his red card at Manchester City in our opening game of the season and is available for selection. Cheik Tiote played an hour for Ivory Coast on Saturday so I’d say it’s safe to assume that he is fit to return whilst Jonas Gutierrez and Mike Williamson will also come back into contention for a place in the matchday squad.

Yohan Cabaye is also likely to come back into the side having impressed with his attitude during the international break whilst Loic Remy should be fit enough to start the game after having an extra couple of weeks to work on his fitness.

United took four points off of Villa last season, drawing at St James’ Park and winning 2-1 at Villa Park. A similar result this time around will be most welcome indeed.

Overall United shade the head-to-head having won 65 of the 150 meetings between the two sides. Villa have won on 52 occasions with the other 33 matches ending in a draw.

Stats and facts…

Villa have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 25 Premier League games.

In the last match against Fulham, United managed 25 shots at goal – the joint-most of any team in a single game this term.

Villa have proved to be more clinical than Newcastle so far this term. The Villans have scored four from eleven shots on target compared to United’s one goal from ten attempts on target.

Final thought…

There is a perception that Villa have “turned a corner” this season whilst we are in turmoil, but a quick look at the table will show that we are still one point ahead of them. Of course it’s also worth noting that Villa have played three of the bigger teams (two away from home) so they haven’t had the easiest start to the season in terms of fixtures.

We have what I believe to be our best side available along with string options from the bench if needed and this is a game we can win if we play to our potential. That is my issue though as I don’t think we will…

Howay the lads!

  1. MM your reet on pardew the man makes me sick, the mans a joke hes on about us not having the money the top 4 clubs have,no we havent but we are not the poorest by a long chalk we can get into euros he says thats from a man that twisted the whole time we were in it last year, just talk about foot ball for christ sake if you can which i doubt, just keep it shut ******** πŸ‘Ώ

  2. Prem ,.Ah, that’s more like it ,and you have predicted 3.1 like me . If only Pards wasn’t so bleeding predictable πŸ™„
Anyway HWTL who ever he picks.

  3. Very true Kim. With Pardews comments about being more like the entertainers we could all be dreaming if an attacking 4-3-3 like this;

    —-Ben Arfa–Cisse–Remy—-

When really we will get a defensive 4-2-3-1 like this:

    Ben Arfa—Sissoko—–Jonas

  4. <<<<<<, hopes ben afra dint keep taking the game to walking pace when he gets near the box today, giveing the defenders time to pick up there man, expects him to stick it in the mix soon as

  5. Ice dont be holding back πŸ˜†
MM where have you been mate we have missed your positivity πŸ˜€
I think Tiote, Jonas and Cabaye will start but not Saylor.

  6. Big Dave@81, I thought our antipodean branch were flying the flag on the positivity mate πŸ™‚

Icedog, get mucked in there mate, I’m alongside you in the trenches… πŸ˜‰

    Newcastle…United, will never be defeated ! πŸ™‚

  7. Agree with Eminen and angry Ice… Pardew should just shut it and let some wins do the talking… he should say about as much as marcel marceau …like Joe at the moment.. πŸ˜†

  8. @ KIMTOON 74
expect to see remy early in the 2nd half easy him back slow dint want him doing his injury again πŸ˜€

  9. No Jonas, Taylor or Tiote for me. Even then I don’t think we’ll get anything. I won’t be surprised if they score three headers.

  10. 0-3 defeat today. Don’t think we are good enough, and Pardew’s tactics are so hopeless that we won’t stand a chance.

  11. well sometimes it helps to kick off,(not that it does any good),but i dont want to hear which club has the most money which clubs can do this and that and we cannot do this or that, all i ask is for players to come out and give 100% and play footy we can enjoy to watch win lose or draw not some ******** blowing out his back end and sending teams out on the back foot hoping not to get beat, hasnt got a clue on tactics and wasteing the few players we have with talent,he has won 10% of games in two yrs away from home fed up with him πŸ‘Ώ

  12. Well that’s pretty clear Ice. Nobody’s going to argue that one.
There’s always Aussie I suppose but what does he know about football. πŸ˜†

  13. Right lets see what the ex manager of the year does with a full strength squad. No excuses now. He’s confirmed he is happy with the squad he’s got. I predict Jonas and Tiote back, Shola making a cameo where ever he can shoe horn him in. Think this will be tough, at best a draw.
Ice hadn’t realised his away win rate was so diabolical, Shocking really.
Well let’s hope the team play like the last 20 mins at Fulham

  14. Icedog@89, couldn’t agree more mate, my sentiments exactly. You played footy at a good level mate, could you imagine putting in a full shift for that diamond geezer Pardew ?

    Georgie@83, why’s that mate ?

Aussiemag@84, spot on mate. His blathering is just to cover up for his tactical inadeqaucies, but we’re not buying that are we mate ? πŸ˜‰

  15. Georgio, if i forgot 1/2 of what i know about football, I’d still know twice as much as you πŸ˜‰ πŸ˜›
I’m not a fan of Pardew, so no argument from me… this time.. 😎

  16. MM@92 no way could i have played for that clown i would have a kick-around on the condy pitch before i would kick a ball for him

  17. Todays matchday squad is the best Pardews had at his disposal at SJP since arriving. No damaging injuries or suspensions, No midweek european match, No players refusing to play.

NO EXCUSES I can accept winning, losing or drawing but im not keen on people insulting my intelligence.

  18. If pards tactics is 4312 ..hba behind remy and cisse ..and secure behind him with cabs sissoko and tiote…so newcastle win easyer…. ❗ 😎
If the same **** story with 442 no space no tactics just hoof ball…so we can pray for a lucky draw … ❗ 😳

  19. Good to see Ashley Young is still a diving cheating *******…. deserved his yellow against Palace..

  20. Kim I still cant believe that our so called manager is coming out with this ****e.
I think it tells you all we need to know ie without selling Cabaye we wernt buying anyone.
So why would we have to borrow from a bank when Jabba’s Β£18 mil is still in the club, I can never remember being so ****ed off with our club.
I really hope and pray that we can start to play some decent footie to give me some encouragment, one thing is for sure if Pards ****s up this time he has only himself to blame after all the **** he has spouted πŸ‘Ώ

  21. @100…bowl****…pards is a lier ….
Hope keep and sign permant for remy ….
If there is option sell there for us.. πŸ™„

  22. It baffles me. I know that reading the crap in the media pisses me off so I don’t read it. Can’t understand how intelligent people can deliberately go out of their way to make themselves angry.

  23. Kim –

β€œThere was the will there, but I don’t want to say any more than that. I don’t want to affect our fans any more than they’ve been affected.”

It’s quotes like this from Pardew that piss me off. If you don’t want to affect the fans, keep your gob shut!, coz this just leaves us with more questions. As the article then goes on to say, it also fuels the thought that Ashley is taking out of the pot.
If there is not enough money coming in, what are the club doing about it?. The Scum hold concerts at there ground at the end of seasons – would that be worth looking into?! The money seems to be out in the Far East – why aren’t we advertise some other companies over there – why aren’t we advertising the Bobby Robson foundation more?.
Why are our preseasons against ****e teams rather than the Barcas or Madrids of this world and making it attractive in terms of ticket sales. It may not bring in millions but it all goes into the pot and increases our global brand.
We seem to be stood still as a club, whether that’s coz he’s not bothered or coz he’s sitting it out for someone to buy him out.

  24. Fuckkkkk ❗ cheater ❗ young is a **** ❗ ❗ πŸ‘Ώ
If fault here outside pen area ❗ **** ❗

  25. Red card ❓ it is not football..just man u show…no body no team can play football seriously at old traford ❗ no fault ❗ never pen ❗ πŸ‘Ώ
    Bigger financial team same story….its a shame…
Why big team dont play together with close top 6 league ❓
    Football is dead ❗
