Newcastle v Leeds – League Cup match preview

A tale of two Uniteds
A tale of two Uniteds
Newcastle take on Leeds at St James’ Park tomorrow evening with both sides eyeing progression to the next round of the Capital One Cup.

Kick-off is at 7:45pm and a winner must be achieved on the night with extra time or penalties on the agenda if the two sides can’t be split throughout the course of the evening.

This game give Newcastle a chance to put the defeat to Hull behind them in front of their own fans, and a travelling army of around 6,000 Leeds who will be making the trip to the North East hopeful of their side causing an upset. It can’t happen but all too often it does when Newcastle are concerned so complacency can’t be afforded on any level if Alan Pardew and Co are considering having a serious stab at a cup run.

Newcastle:

Steven Taylor, Shola Ameobi and Massadio Haidara and Ryan Taylor are all out for this one whilst Yohan Cabaye is struggling with a groin strain. Jonas Gutierrez could feature after recovering from his recent hamstring injury however.

We are also likely to see some faces who are on the edge of the first team at the moment. Players such as Sylvain Marveaux and Cheik Tiote may be upgraded from their spaces on the bench and given a run out whilst younger players like Curtis Good and Paul Dummett may see some time on the pitch in much the same way they did in the last round.

Leeds:

Stephen Warnock is available again after serving suspension so Sam Byram remains Brian McDermott’s only fitness concern. The versatile 20-year-old will undergo a fitness test prior to the match.

Previously…

Newcastle progressed to this round by beating Morecambe away last month. Leeds have had to negotiate two ties to get this far, beating Chesterfield 2-1 in the first round before seeing off Doncaster 3-1 away from home.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle have failed to eliminate Leeds from any cup competition since the club was formed. The covers four meetings, two in the FA Cup and two in the League Cup with those games taking place in 1931, 1933, 1966 and 1982.

This will be Alan Pardew’s first home League Cup tie in charge of United. The last home tie we played was the 4-0 home defeat to Arsenal at the tail end of the Chris Hughton era.

Newcastle have lost just one of their last nine games against Leeds (all in the Premier League), winning six and drawing two.

Final thought:

Ordinarily I’m all about giving some fringe players the chance to impress in games lie this whilst retaining a certain amount of strength to get the job done, but the performance against Hull (this is the first time I’ve mentioned it!) requires a change of approach and I’d like to see a full team named from the start.

Papiss Cisse has to start for me. He’s gone 16 hours since he last found the back of the net and he needs something to fall for him soon, but if it doesn’t happen against Leeds then action needs to be taken and he needs replacing for the next league game. This is his last chance.

We’ve seen how we can play, so treat this game as any other league game and try to go about it in the same way that had fans feeling upbeat just a few days prior to the Hull debacle.

Howay the lads!

  1. I agree Toonsy.
A full strength team to start with and get the job done by HT. Some fringe players can then be introduced for the 2nd half.

  2. Would be nice to see a few younger players in the starting line up.
Haven’t seen Good play, would field him next to Colo. If he impresses it could result in him ousting Willo has 4th choice CB which I’m sure many fans would like!
This is a big game for Cisse, if he starts and doesn’t impress again, I can see a huge number of fans losing patience with him.
    Ba back in Jan, anyone?

  3. BB – from the last article, there’s only been Carroll who I can think of mate. But I do think if the transfer policy was changed, then we could have a much better balance in the team. None of the top 4-6 clubs place that restriction on themselves so that should tell Ashey something!.

      (Quote)

  4. As for tonight, I’d like to see the players who performed well against Morecombe get that chance again. I’m thinking in particular of players like Elliott, Good, Dummett and Sammy should defo start.

    ——————- Elliott —————-
    Debuchy – Colo – Good – Dummett
    —– Gosling — Tiote — Jonas —–
    — Obertan – Gouffran – Sammy —

Subs – Krul, MYM, Anita, Sissoko, Benny, Marv, Cisse.

      (Quote)

  5. Sharpy – Cabaye should be a future captain of NUFC, but he would have been sold already given half a chance.
I just feel that ANY player that makes a name for themselves while here will be a potential sale for the fat controller.
What the team/club needs is not important.
    Money, money, money.

      (Quote)

  6. I’d only make a couple of changes, possibly Haidara or Dummet for Santon, Tiote for Cabaye with Anita or Sissoko or the both of them pushed further up, Goof and Sammy in for Remy and Ben Arfa. Cisse up top.

If Cisse still doesn’t score or show serious improvement in all round play, drop him.

      (Quote)

  7. Newkie – at what point do you drop Cisse ❓
    Half time ❓
Or does he get another 90 mins to show how bad he has become ❓

      (Quote)

  8. @bb you mean like berba/bale/modric/keane or van persie/fabregas/nasri/adebayor? This is a tired argument.
I’m fine Ashley selling our players for top dollar IF he invests the proceeds.

      (Quote)

  9. Well we have to go for it tonight ,lets see some real intent and desire. As for Cisse as many know I really like the guy but even I’m getting concerned now ,he simply has to get on the score sheet soon or his position is seriously under threat.

Solano@2 ,There is no way Ba will come back ,talk was he nearly went on loan to Arsenal but fell through at last moment in the summer ,so why would he come to us .

      (Quote)

  10. Toonsy good read 😉
For me we need to play a full strength team and when / if we are winning comfortably in the 2nd half we can put a few bench players on.
Our team isnt strong enough to change the starting line up more than a player or two .

      (Quote)

  11. Solano – NO I don’t mean that at all. You pick me up wrong.
It’s easy to sell players like you list above, when you have a squad full of talent already.
What my point is we need to KEEP some experienced players with wise heads and good leadership abilities rather than always looking to sell on.
We have kept Colo into his 30’s which is what I am saying, but as he is clearly in his last season with us (?) who do we have coming up that will step into his boots ❓
I used Cabaye as an example. I would love it if we made it clear we want to keep him and build a team around him. He has the potential in my eyes to be a good leader and captain, but he is clearly destabilised with the knowledge he is up for sale at any time a good offer comes in.
Like I said on the previous thread, his heart is not in it. Same applies to the rest of the squad.
    IMO

      (Quote)

  12. BB – I have to agree with ST on this one TBH mate. Also, in fairness to the ‘fat controller’, he doesn’t actively look to sell these players. Liverpool went from something like £20m to £35m to land Carroll. Colo was the one trying to force the move home – which Ashley blocked. Cabaye went on strike to try and force his move to Arsenal – which would have been a double your money sale for Ashley – not bad if all he’s about is the money.

It’s still early days for them yet but I’d sooner have Sissoko as captain. I think he has more about his game and that steel edge to lift the rest of the team when the **** hits the fan.
If not him then Anita done a pretty good job at Ajax like. Didnt they win the league under his leadership?

      (Quote)

  13. Beardsley-Give him the full 90 vs leeds mate, if he finds no form then he is dropped for starting league matches until he starts picking up as a sub for me.

      (Quote)

  14. @BB – What do you think helped Tottenham get to where they are?
Ashley rejected a bid for Cabaye, and then Cabaye said he wasn’t mentally able to play..
I know this is going to sound like something Troy would say… But I honestly thought that you could see the signs that Cabaye was going to go off during the Hull game. He wasn’t playing well and he bottled it imo.
Could be horribly wrong, but if he’s back next game then I believe he just went into a strop to get subbed off. He’s done it before, against Everton, I believe.
Re last thread – I don’t think Nolan ever “went missing” in games. He just had limited talent, which stopped him being effective in some games.
For me, he’s the best captain we’ve had since Shearer, by a country mile.#
I can’t see anyone in this current squad coming close. Nolan seemed to have a great knack of building spirit throughout the team and the fans.
The fact that he housed Carroll says it all!

      (Quote)

  15. BB – I do understand what you’re saying mate, my point though (and STs as well I think) is that we should be adding talent, not just desperately trying to hold on to what we have.
What I mean is that Arsenal reportedly offered £10m for Cabaye – Norwich signed Leroy Fer for around £4.5m and Swansea signed Johnjo Shelvey for around £5m – Fer & Shelvey in place of Cabaye – I’d favour that switch.
Liverpool wanted Benny for around £10m – Norwich signed Redmond for around £2.5m, Blackpool wanted £8m for Ince and I think Man City wanted around £5-6m.
Redmond & Ince in place of Benny plus 500k, or Redmond and Sinclair in place of Benny plus change – based on the fact it gives greater strength to our squad, then yeah I’m in favour of that as well like.

      (Quote)

  16. It was interesting to note that a lot of prem teams fielded their full teams (more or less) last night including Spurs and Chelsea. They want to win the **** thing not just have a look at a few fringe players as we’ve done in the past. FFS we were lucky to get past Morecambe.
Having said that with all those top teams still in it we have no chance. 😥

      (Quote)

  17. ST – I direct the suggestion to you but I’ve heard others saying similar to you.

Is not beyond the realms of possibility that the reason Cabaye didn’t have his best game against Hull – because he was simply injured? – an injury which keeps him out of tonight’s game.

      (Quote)

  18. Sharpy – the unproven Redmond and Ince instead of Benny? I know he had an off day against Hull (didn’t they all) but we’d be sitting on 1pt without him! The kind of player acquisition you’re suggesting I’m all for but not at the expense of the only good players we have (I’m not including Cabaye in that. He’s sulked off half injured too many times for me already and was really really poor against Hull).
We NEEDED some new players in the last window 👿

      (Quote)

  19. @Georgio
I hope that if he mixes the team up, this isn’t going to be a stick to beat Pardew with later, as this is just a flat out lie.

      (Quote)

  20. @Sharpy
Yeah you’re right. I feel bad if that’s true, it’s just in some games you can see he sort of ‘gives up’ if things aren’t going his way – ref decisions etc.

      (Quote)

  21. ST – my Pardew beating stick lies broken and splintered on the floor. I thought about getting a new one but decided he’s not worth my effort.

      (Quote)

  22. Elite – it’s early days for Sissoko like I say and hes still a young lad, but I think by the time Colo is ready to move over, Sissoko will have settled in. Don’t forget he’s only had around half a season of PL football under his belt and hasn’t had much consistence in the role he’s been asked to play in the team.

Personally I think we should be building a team around a spine of Krul – MYM – Santon – Anita and Sissoko. There are others in the team but they would be the main stays for me like.

      (Quote)

  23. Georgio – Redmond has been the inspiration behind most of Norwichs points this season as is Ince with Blackpool (lower league I know but still). It’s a difficult arguement because its all hypothetical. You say we’d only have one point, I could argue that Redmond/Ince or Redmond/Sinclair could have made the difference in taking all 3 points against WH or changed the outcome of the Hull game.
The one thing we can agree on though is that we’d rather have Ince, Redmond AND Benny in the same team/squad.

      (Quote)

  24. Georgio, so you don’t care to offer any examples of teams that fielded “their full teams (more or less)”
Pisses me off when people make up things to try and bring bad vibes.
We have enough of that based on stuff actually happening, without needing to dream up reasons to be annoyed.

      (Quote)

  25. I liked cabaye and he can be a good player but equally I have been massively critical of him and think he deserved it all of last year-I don’t think he was stropping on the weekend, I’m inclined to agree with Sharpy. In all honesty he probably did himself damage against Villa-even though he was average he did more running than I’ve ever seen him do in a toon shirt, probably not used to the shift 😆

      (Quote)

  26. TAE – I don’t know how much of Redmond you have seen this season, but all things considered – ie age, step up from the championship, a fee of only £2.5m – he’s been a revelation so far. It may be beginners luck, but I’d sooner see him in our squad than Norwich. For £2.5m he’s practically risk free as well

      (Quote)

  27. ST – I wasn’t making things up, wanting reasons to be pissed off or anything like that. It was merely an assertion that a lot of teams want to win it this season. Wrong side of the bed this morning then?

Spurs, Man city, Chelsea, Fulham all fielded teams stuffed with first teamers, thus my more or less rider.

      (Quote)

  28. Sharpy – you obviously rate Ince and Redmond. I admit I haven’t seen a lot of them but there wasn’t that much interest in them in the summer. No doubt they’d improve over Obertan and possibly Marv. I’m not convinced, but you may well be right.

      (Quote)

  29. I wouldn’t take the **** out of sunderland just yet. We still have home and away games and with Pardew at the helm there’s a little hope for them. Hull city proved that saturday and with Cisse firing blanks all pre season and taylor’s red cards it could be a more difficult game. If they get a good manager then who knows.

      (Quote)

  30. I can’t help but be negative after last season. I don’t underestimate any team but we really should have hammered Hull. I can’t remember the last time winning games 3-0 with Pardew

      (Quote)

  31. Georgie I’m fine, but you’re talking out your ****!
You know that the internet means people can check things?
    Tottenham – Vertonghan/Walker/Paulinho/Lamela
    Man City – Clichy/Lescott (debatable)/Fernandinho (debatable)
    Chelsea – HA – Cahill.
    Villa – 3/4 players
    Everton – 5 players
Fulham – I don’t really know their starting line up so I’ll give you that one.
So now we can all agree – if Pardew decides to rest a number of first teamers he is just doing what the majority of Premiership managers do. Yes ❓

      (Quote)

  32. Georgio – I think with every player, what you buy is potential. You can never be completely sure how they will work out or fit into the team.
But the way I view it is how big is that risk for the outlay. For me, Redmond at £2.5m really wasn’t a risk at all. Ince at £8m could be argued is a bit more of one. But when you consider MU folked out something like £15m for Zaha, then for me it isn’t that bad.
Our club complains that English players are too expensive, and there is certainly evidence of that. But Redmond at £2.5m, Shelvey at £5m and Ince at £8m – that’s 3 very decent young English players for £15m. Also, Clyne was a freebie picked up by Saints last season. So in the last 3 transfer windows there’s 4 English players who in my opinion could walk into our squad with ease.

  33. “They were asked if Sports Direct paid for adverting at St. James’ Park and it was confirmed that they do not. John Irving said that Sports Direct were using space that would be otherwise unused but didn’t say how hard the commercial team were trying to find other (paying) advertisers,”

ah well then, that clears that one up. no point having blank advertising boards everywhere. I can image it being really hard to find companies for a world-wide ad campaign

      (Quote)

  34. Mark – unbelievable!!. I can’t say I’m that bothered about Ashley staying coz it’s a bit of a better the devil you know type thing with him. It’s more the open acknowledgement that commercially we are **** poor and doing little or nothing to address that. Also the flapancy in which they dismiss the fact that SD are paying absolutely NOTHING to advertise!!.
Is it worth getting annoyed about though?!

      (Quote)

  35. i think its a brilliant idea. Instead of having blank boards why not Mike make millions on ads for the whole world to see.

Its not free advertising as nobody has stepped in to take on the Ads. not even Cancer research, Alzheimer trust etc etc. they would of been a better idea to fill a free board..

      (Quote)

  36. @Sharpy.

too right its worth being annoyed about. he’s taking the ****. As if they would remain empty. what a load of ****. Mike knows the big picture is on a global scale. why have 3mil-ish per season when his SD company could potentially double that in sales thru advertising… for FREE

      (Quote)

  37. I don’t like to pick up on spelling here but I do like the word “flapancy” Sharpy 😆

I know where you’re coming from-if we were making big money and getting our name out there then fair enough-but we’re not, we’re absolutely shocking. The glaziers might be despised by manure but they are great at marketing them as a brand, over in the US and elsewhere. We’re just ****. I appreciate we’re not the side we were but ffs like, why are we playing doncaster, hartlepool and carslisle in pre season when can play in the US or Asia?

I quite liked the U.S tour, if only for the hilariously OTT american commentary.

    And the cheerleaders 😎

      (Quote)

  38. Unbelievable.
How about this as a protest – fans all chip in to pay for the advertising boards.
Anything is better than > £0.
On it we have “Please by our club. From, the Toon Army”
Or some sort of Mary Poppins style letter that stretches, a line on each board, around St James Park – highlighting what we would like in an owner.

      (Quote)

  39. i cant believe they have the flapancy to say they would remain blank is a total joke. anyone that says Mike isnt here to promote SD needs their eyes tested.

There are hundreds of charities that would love to advertise, and would pay to do so.. disgusted and cheated again by the fatman

      (Quote)

  40. I can’t believe anyone is surprised, it’s always been obvious that he wasn’t paying for it….and therefore not only is NUFC not being well run as a football club, it isn’t being well run as a business either…unless that business is Sports Direct, in which case Bravo, cracking job! 👿

There’s not a single club in the league that can’t attract “paying” sponsors for advertising hording, except of course 🙄

      (Quote)

  41. Newkie – 😳 😆

Mark – it was a bit of a rhetoric question to be honest. If we were giving away free advertising I’d sooner it me to the Bobby Robson foundation or the teenage cancer trust like the Falcons support.
I used to work for a company called Sage – a computer software company based in Gosforth and based in the North East. Even if we sell the space at knock down prices to local companies, it’s better than nowt to those sellers of tat!.

      (Quote)

  42. I said years ago(or so it seems) that even if he deducted the amount that we’d expect to get from that over the top advertising from what he is owed then that’s fine, but he/they don’t #****

      (Quote)

  43. Sharpy…There’s countless sponsors that would pay the going rate, Ashley doesn’t nor has ever wanted that, we don’t need to give any free space to charities or at a reduced cost, we just need an owner who actually wants to sell the advertising space, we haven’t got that unfortunately.

      (Quote)

  44. Has anyone read the transcript from the meeting between NUST and members of the board (Charnley & a few others), took place on Monday night. ****, its depressing. They actually state that at no point will the club ever take cup competitions seriously and they will always concentrate on a top ten finish as priority, apparently the financial rewards associated with cup competitions render them pointless. They go on to say cup competitions will always be used as a means of looking at the squad as a whole. Pardews hands are obviously tied when it comes to play the reserves in cup competitions.

      (Quote)

  45. Solano-that’s the best protest idea I’ve heard yet mate 😆 I’d be willing to put a tenner in to see that.

    Mark 😆

      (Quote)

  46. Also I see Terim got the sack today from Galatasary. Presumably he doesn’t have long term ambitions with Turkey…but imagine if the Mackems got him now after Di Canio 🙄 😕

      (Quote)

  47. TAE – Redmond would fit into our squad fine then mate, coz we are nee where near a top 4 team 😆

Mark – I joined them when they were based behind the Metro station on Gosforth High St and then moved with them to the new build off the A1 opposite the race course. I sold Act. I was a fantastic company to work for I thought, but I’m not a computer person so found it pretty boring if I’m honest 🙄

      (Quote)

  48. 😯 was there anyone that really thought SD were paying owt to plaster the place with their tacky **** 😕 especially when you consider that that was the main reason Jabba bought us in the 1st place.
As Richie said you could look over it if he was even deducting money of what was owed, but no we get fuk all while other SD share holders make money of us.

      (Quote)

  49. Evans-cheers for that, the actual minutes would have been interesting but this is ok.

I know the league cup is hardly fashionable and the F.A cup has lost its magic but the fact we don’t have ambition to at least aim for one of them is telling. I would forgive Ashley and Pardew a lot if we won the F.A cup like, or the Europa last year 😕

      (Quote)

  50. What I can’t understand is if they are happy to treat the cups with such contempt and this has always been the plan, why do they allow Pardew and the players to spend the week before a cup game bleating on about how much they want to win one and how important it would be to the club. This meeting took place on Monday and in the days since there’s been countless articles stating the exact opposite to what was said by the officials. Its fucking insulting

      (Quote)

  51. Ameobi’s probably up front tonight with Obertan and Williamson but they should be able to cope. Newcastle 2-0 Leeds. Cisse should be up front today and droped if useless on saturday. It’s about time he scored a goal and against championship team at home, no excuses.

      (Quote)

  52. Evans-Maybe Pardew and the players actually want that-I’m sure they do-so they are attempting to put pressure on Ashley in the most diplomatic way they can. Lets face it if they go up and tell him they will be sacked or sold. Ashley proved with Barton he is more than willing to get rid of one of the clubs best players (player of the season for many) for absolutely nothing, purely because he was giving him an earful.

We seemed to take the Europa fairly seriously…maybe the talk of not wanting to win a cup is another attempt to lower expectations and backlash, for when Brighton next knock us out 😆

      (Quote)

  53. How much per year would we be paying in interest on the 111m debt if it were owed to a bank?

      (Quote)

  54. Irrelevant, Ashley/his cronies stated that the loan was interest free, they didn’t say the free advertising was in lieu of the interest therefore one has nowt to do with the other. Also Ashley isn’t the sole owner of SD so people who have nowt to do with NUFC are benefitting from the free sponsorship but if people want to compare the 2 they can craic on. I’ve got better things to do, a nice steak and a few beers beckon 😉

      (Quote)

  55. ST@38 – straight from my ****. I actually did check the internet.
Chelsea: Luiz, Cahill, Torres, Bertrand, Ramires, Mata.
Anyway my point was that a lot of teams are taking it seriously (despite your references to pissing you off and my ****) whereas the statement from the club says quite pointedly that we’re not. I don’t make comments to **** anybody off. 😉

      (Quote)

  56. Aussie – it’s all a moot point. He owns the club, it’s his debt. Seems like the media want us to believe he lends himself money. There actually is no debt.

      (Quote)

  57. Richie spot on again 😉 your reading the same book, as I said above and manytimes before people with nowt to do with our club are making money of us.
    That cant be right 😯

      (Quote)

  58. Georgio, the interest free loan always seems to be a moot point… he bought out the bank debt which saves the club money year on year. The club owes the money to Ashley does it not?

      (Quote)

  59. Someone needs to tell Pardumdum to read the Ronnie gill.
He still dreams of us winning a cup ffs.
    What a muppet.
We have no intention of winning a cup, as it only leads to European football, which would require further player investments etc
Its also in mashley’s interest to have very little revenue coming in to the club by advertising/sponsorship, as it means he can carry on pleading poverty, and so justifying not spending money on players etc.
Keep the club ticking over in mediocrity that’s the ambition.
    Nothing more nothing less.
    👿

      (Quote)

  60. Really wish I hadn’t bought a tkt for tonights match now. 👿
Like what’s the point if it isn’t going to lead anywhere.
    Fucking joke. 👿 👿 👿
