Cup run continues! Newcastle 2-0 Leeds

Cisse finally finds the net
Cisse finally finds the net
I feel slightly embarrassed calling qualifying for the fourth round of the League Cup a “cup run” but all the same we are still in the competition.

Unfortunately as reward for dispatching Leeds United we now have to face Manchester City at St James’ Park at the tail end of October – a fixture that will be sandwiched between a visit to Sunderland and the welcoming of Chelsea to St James’ Park in what could prove to be a defining week for United.

However this about last night so I won’t go too much further into the future and will instead focus on the fairly comfortable victory over Leeds. In truth United were easy winners without playing at their best but the job has been done and with Papiss Cisse finally finding the net I’m hopeful that will give him some confidence to take back into our Premier League fixtures.

Despite the comfortable nature of the victory it was the away side who very nearly drew first blood when Ross McCormack found space in front of goal only to see his lobbed effort glance off the crossbar.

Leeds tried to control the middle of the lark but United eventually started to come to terms with that and started to take control of the game themselves. Fabricio Coloccini saw a header from a Sylvain Marveaux corner cleared off the line before Yoan Gouffran headed wide from a Sammy Ameobi cross. Cheik Tiote saw an effort tipped wide at the near post and Papiss Cisse hit the side netting from a narrow angle after turning the Leeds defence before Matt Smith fired a warning to United, forcing Tim Krul into a save to deny the former Oldham man.

However, on 31 minutes, the home side finally made the breakthrough, and it was a goal that Papiss Cisse and his supporters have been waiting for over 1,000 minutes. Paul Dummett played the ball down the left for Sammy Amoebi who crossed perfectly for Papiss Cisse who nodded home from eight yards without having to break stride. Considering some of the sitters he’s missed in recent weeks, this was a decent finish.

Half-time: Newcastle 1-0 Leeds

It’s fair to say that the second period took a while to get going, but once it did the first real noteworthy action was worth waiting for. Sammy Ameobi played the ball into Yoan Gouffran. With his back towards goal the former Bordeaux man took a touch to get away from defender Scott Wootton before hammering a right-footed shot past Paddy Kenny and into the Gallowgate net from the edge of the penalty area – his first ever goal at St James’ Park.

That goal pretty much killed Leeds and the game as a contest but it the home side could and should have added more through Gabriel Obertan who was set free of the Leeds defence twice only to fluff his lines on both occasions.

Full-time: Newcastle 2-0 Leeds

All in all a comfortable win and a potential banana skin avoided. A decent enough performance without being anything special but it’s job done and we live to fight another day in the Capital One Cup.

Howay the lads!

  1. Sharpy maybe Pardew is trying to give the lad a lift via the media. If a woman says “does my **** look big in these pants?” You don’t say “it looks big in any garment”
You bend the truth so all parties come out of it intact and feeling better about themselves 😆 😆

  2. Newkie – I think I may buy that book like, reckon it could be quite interesting. I used to drink with him, Given and Waddle in Whickham. To be honest, Given was sound but a shagger – always looking to pull. Gillespie was a bellend and always looked off his face, he was always on edge and always wanted to move on.

Aussie – it’s BS is what it is mate, there are better players out there at lesser clubs getting paid alot less. He’s not good enough, however Pards wants to jazz it up and Oba offers absolutely no competition to the first team.

  3. Can’t believe people are still discussing whether Obertan’s good enough. He had his chance 2 seasons ago, played lots of games and then was found out. He’s **** and I’ll never forgive him for ducking away from Baines’ free kick last season at SJP. It would have hit his chest instead of the net. Krul was furious. Move him on.

  4. AMF@154 the truth doesnt always work with women mate, wor lass wanted a breast opp to improve the size so i bought her a toilet roll, she asked why i told her to rub it between her breasts, what good would that do,i told her to look at her backside it worked there have you seen the size off that 😯

  5. SHARPY,ime still limping mate 😀 on oba pardew is talking out his **** as normal get him out on loan with view to buy he will never be a PL player imo

  6. GEORGIO,been working on the house mate plus being fed up with the **** from pardew, that game against Hull just showed again hes clueless when the game was there to be won he switched back to 442 and we know the result 👿

  7. Sharpy-really mate? 😯 Fair play.

Gillespie always struck me as a **** to be honest, Given doesn’t surprise me although I always thought he might be a little gobshite as well altho I loved him while he was here like 😆

  8. Georgio@156-Agree completely on Obertan. He had a massive run in the side when we first got him and he was poor and he’s never improved since. If we’re going to talk about his confidence being destroyed maybe SAF had a hand in that after barely giving him a game. He has some talent but for me he lacks the mental attitude to actually go for the throat, take players on or score. If you have poor confidence for 4/5 years in football then your career is pretty much shot 😕

  9. I understand lee ryders a useless baldy kernt but even he can surely see that if Dummett is to get a start in the premier league as he rightly (for a change) suggests, It has to be Debuchy with Santon switching wings not dropping DS… 🙄

  10. Icedog 100% agree with you. Pardew has proved this time after time. He was lucky against Villa but every win he gets seems to be lucky. I don’t want to upset people but our defence isn’t as solid as people think. I understand defending and saving the players energy and given youngsters a chance when your 2 goals up but Pardew gets scared or something and sits on a 1-0 lead. I know defending is important and attacking is important but how does Pardew get the balance right.

      (Quote)

  11. Yes we can score but our defence get nervous and can’t handle the pressure. I have seen it time and time again. I think Pardew more than satisfied with a 1-0 win, even though we could win 2 or maybe 3. The trouble is getting hit on the counter attack. Pardew fears this I swear ?

  12. Newkie – Given was good craic til a group of tidy blondes turned up. They both lived in Whickham as did Waddle, and me and my mates lived in Blaydon but drank and football up at Whickham so saw them all the time.
I was really lucky to be honest coz I got to know Cole and Clark who lived next door to my Cousin and got to know Lee, Beresford and Bellemy quite well through my mate who was a doorman down the Quayside.

  13. Stem, why were we lucky against Villa?
Lots of teams are “lucky” . man u only beat a 10 man palace team via penalty and free kick, were they lucky? .. we played well against villa and deserved the win..

      (Quote)

  14. Stem – According to all the pundits, Arsenal have had a weak keeper and defence for about 5-6 seasons now. But their best defence is offensive, they break so quickly that teams are frightened to fully commit against them.
As long as I’ve supported Newcastle our defence has never been solid. Even during the Keegan era it looked rocky.
I agree with you. Pardew needs to change his approach. We sat back after going 1 up against Hull, but what we should have done was go after it. Take our foot off at 4-0.

The good thing for me is that 4-3-3 seems to produce goals for us. There wasn’t many times last season where we scored 2 goals in 3 consecutive games.

  15. @ GEORDIETWO 70
Think chuckys boy ganna get 1 hell of a beating monday night meself 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  16. Sharpy – you’re right there mate. It was exactly the same during the SBR times. Never ever trusted Bramble, Dabizas, OBrien or Hughes even. Bernard was OK but down the centre we’ve always been poor!

      (Quote)

  17. Sharpy-you lucky fecker, never knew they’d be so cosy and out and about like that. I moved out of Dunston when I was a lad but I remember we used to live near Gazza’s dad because he had a Jag while everyone else was still on horse and cart 😆

      (Quote)

  18. Every team at some point needs a bit of luck or a decision in your favour by the ref. I have seen Manu hammer team’s more often than not. Anybody can be unlucky at times but sometimes the team with less chances and possession can still win games. 443 is a system that works well with us imo. Okay we played well against Villa but as long as there’s lots of goals, even if we lose most people would be happy because we had a good go at them. Pardew always gets a one goal lead and plays defensive but Hull really is a team we should beat. I don’t understand why Pardew’s so negative when he has the likes of Remy and Goufran in the side. We have the players to win games more comfortably. I expect us to be in the top 10 this season and hopefully getting a point at everton ?

      (Quote)

  19. Stem-I like that 4-4-3 system, particularly as it would presumably allow us to play with 12 men on the pitch 😀

You should be nervous. Everton are favourites for a reason. Kenwright might be tight but he has footballing sense, like bringing in Lukaku to bolster a struggling forward line…Everton are in good form and are at home..I expect nothing.

      (Quote)

  20. Stem – away to Villa was always likely to be a difficult game and I expected them to have chances and press us to be fair. But what was pleasing was the players attitude and workrate, two things that were clearly lacking against Hull. 4-3-3 is the right formation for me, but it still needs the players to be on it for 90mins plus. That’s the difference between us and Man Utd, they press teams and force mistakes – they earn their luck. Even when they ease up they are still in control of a game and can turn it back on with a quick counter attack. I can’t remember who Man U were playing the other week but it was a goal by Antonio Valencia on a quick break and I thought – we never score like that!.

I think if Pardew is to trust the players, and allow them to play that way, then they have to show that they are prepared to do it every week. I think Pardews caution comes from performances like Hull, with too many players dropping their game.

      (Quote)

  21. For some reason I can’t imagine Pardew shouting or losing his temper at the players after a poor performance. He only seems to have a go at players when Ashley says something. He must listen to the players whining on about extra europa league games, grass and say that in interviews. It would certainly explain last season. Does a good manager let his players walk all over him ? I would have docked the whole team a 2 week fine for a poor performance against Liverpool when it was 6-0 for example. There’s losing and given up and not trying.

      (Quote)

  22. not looking forward to the Everton game. they look a slick outfit, decent defending just a bit more attacking style under Martinez.

Lukaku is a beast so I reckon their style with Lukaku up front will have us flapping at the back.

    2-1 to everton or if I was opti-mistic Meg I’d guess 1-1..

      (Quote)

  23. Dave I agree a draw would do v Everton .

Georgio@156 ,I heard Oba ducked cause he didn’t wanna risk damaging his good looks 😆

      (Quote)

  24. @AUSSIE

B&B posts on Eds site now m8. he’s lost forever I reckon. Thats what happens when you mess with Emperor Dave and Tsar Troy 😆

  25. <<<<<<<< sees the everton game as very winable meself see us geting at least a point prob all 3 😯

      (Quote)

  26. I see Oba’s getting a lot of stick for his cameo appearance v Leeds.

Don’t get me wrong I dont like the player at all but he hasnt featured for a while so I can imagine his confidence to be quite low.

I thought he found some good areas on the pitch to exploit leeds. He’s never going to make it here imo but its an option if we ever suffer from injuries to our forward line..

      (Quote)

  27. @ MARK 193
put it down to just comeing back 😯 but i also think i could of scored there meself 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  28. Mark-I’m not giving him stick for that cameo, more stick for him just not being good enough to begin with. We gave him a 15-20 odd game run in the side when he arrived and he didn’t really look like improving. I didn’t agree with slagging him off when he arrived and I wanted him to do well but I just don’t see it ever working out for him and I think we should be moving him on-if he came from manure surely he’s on at least 30 odd grand a week?

Up top in front of him I would put Cisse, Remy, Goof, Shola, Sammy, Benny and Campbell ahead of him. On the wings of a 4-3-3 I would put Remy, Goof, Benny, Sammy, Marv and Campbell ahead of him. He’d be hard pressed to beat Jonas and for an attacking outlet that says something, imo.

      (Quote)

  29. Even if we get 2 million back for Orbertan it’s better than nothing. I think Simpson was the best player we bought from Manu. Shame really.

      (Quote)

  30. Stem-Aye money to use either on Benny’s new contract or to sign up Remy permanently. I don’t want to hear **** about how we cant compete with QPR for 75k a week wages- he looks worth it to me, the only question mark is his fitness.

      (Quote)

  31. If Joe doesn’t do something in January he should be moved on as well. We need steady improvement just to keep up. That means moving players such as Obertan, Gosling, and Willo out and bringing in younger, or better players.

      (Quote)

  32. Feletcher out for 6 weeks. Sold their two best players and now their best remaining is injured. Oof they’d be in trouble even if fergie came out of retirement for them 😆

      (Quote)

  33. Joe has got a difficult job off loading Orbertan and Jonas. The trouble is championship clubs cant afford there wage demands. I am sure come the summer there will be free transfers of better quilty and will still be stuck with them. I really think the team needs a couple of changes ?

      (Quote)

  34. Stem – do you genuinely have that much believe in JFK?.

I’ve been down to the metro centre tonight and they had a game station set up for Fifa or whatever the latest game is (nee interest). But they had Shola there taking on the young uns – he couldn’t work it properly!!. He took some stick like but he took it well to be fair to him.

      (Quote)

  35. Stem – I think it’s unfair to write him off just coz of what happened in the summer – though I do think he could have done better – even if it was just another loan signing.
I’m not expecting 5 out 3-4 in like I posted last night, but I do expect some improvement in Jan. Maybe 2 in 2 out would do nicely.

      (Quote)

  36. How do you expect the **** head to buy anyone in January, without ‘slipping’ into our overdraft. 😳
We are SO poor afterall and we don’t get the £60M till next may.
Maybe good old Mikey will be so gracious as to ‘loan’ us a few bob of his own hard earned to tide us over.
    Interest free of course. 😉
    Fat ****** 👿

      (Quote)

  37. Boots – Joe wants to have a word with his mate then, coz another window like the summer and the mob will be sharpening the pitch folks! 😆

I bloody hate Monday night football as well by the way!!!! 👿 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy I think Ashley has the final say on transfers. Kinnear does what his told and takes the heat away from Ashley. I’m sure in january a few players will be nearing the end of there contracts and pick them up cheap. He is going to do this for years to come. Two players in world be good imo.

  39. BD, enough with the niggle and stirring 😯 keep it up and you will have to wield the ban hammer on yourself..
We will have to call you B&B jnr 😆

  40. I’m pissed off there is no game tonight mate.. i will watch a couple of neutral games to get me through till Monday but it’s not the same..

  41. AMF@218, why don’t you get a copy of the new toon dvd doing the rounds “Toons 100 Best Corners”…that’ll keep you going during the long winter nights 🙂

Would like to think we could put out a side which could bring home a draw from Everton, but in all honesty I’m expecting a defeat.

Regarding Man City in the cup. At home, with a big crowd in, the correct team and the right tactics we may be able to nick a win, even going as far as penalties ? But none of this roll over and show us your belly **** like the first game of the season down there place 👿 👿 👿

Regarding our “fringe players”…Dummet’s contract runs out next summer…no brainer that one. The bloke can expect a canny pay rise too hopefully. Hope it’s not a case of treating our own with contempt because they come through the ranks (Sammi too falls into that category) while supposed big name players get brought in from abroad on bigger wages and fail to perform.
Gosling’s contract runs out next summer, that’ll be him walking away for nowt…
    Ditto Shola….

Oberatan has a contract until summer of 2016, thank goodness for that. Maybe the lad is just a late bloomer ? 😉 ….a bit like Richetoon actually 😆 ….though Obertan shouldn’t be really classed as a “fringe” player 🙂

      (Quote)

  42. MM 👿 😥
Dummet’s contract is actually his new one, he signed a 1 year ext in the summer…way to go JK 🙄
