Everton v Newcastle – Premier League match preview

Toffees v Magpies
Toffees v Magpies
Alan Pardew must prepare his side for a daunting trip to Goodison Park where they will come up against a tough Everton side on Monday evening.

The Toffees may have lost one of their key players over the summer along with a manager who had them punching above their financial resources for some considerable time, but a new manager has brought a new approach whilst retaining that ‘hard to beat’ psyche that was synonymous with Moyes’ team.

They are unbeaten so far this season, but it is at home where perhaps the most startling statistics can be found. Not only are they unbeaten this season, they are also unbeaten in 2013 at Goodison Park and haven’t conceded a league goal at home since the very start of March. I thin you’ll agree that those are impressive stats…

Everton:

Steven Pienaar, Antolin Alcaraz and Leon Osman are all missing due to injury. Recalls for Tim Howard, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Kevin Miralles and Gareth Barry are all likely after they were benched for the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at Fulham.

Newcastle:

Yohan Cabaye, Loic Remy, Hatem Ben Arfa, Moussa Sissoko, Davide Santon and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa alllook set to resume their roles in the first team after being rested against Leeds. Jonas Gutierrez and Steven Taylor join Ryan Taylor on the sidelines whilst Shola Ameobi is still struggling for fitness.

Previously…

Only a last minute goal from Demba Ba prevented Everton from doing the double over us last season as we managed to squeak a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park in the early part of the season before losing the return fixture at St James’ Park 2-1 despite Papiss Cisse scoring an early opener.

Overall the head-to-head record is pretty even with results tending to favour the home side. There have been 160 meetings between the two clubs previously with United just shading it with 64 victories compared to 61 for Everton.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle last beat Everton at Goodison in 2010 courtesy of a stunning by Hatem Ben Arfa. Before that though the last time we won at Everton was in 2001.

Assuming Gareth Barry plays,he will become only the 10th player to rack up 500 Premier League appearances.

Everton are the only team yet to be beaten in a league game this season. They have also had more draws this season than any other side.

Leighton Baines scored his 21st Premier League goal at West Ham last weekend. Only John Terry (32) has scored more goals as a defender.

Newcastle have conceded more headed goals (3) than any other side so far this season.

Final thought:

After daring to dream against Hull City I soon got slapped back down to earth and now I’m firmly in pessimistic mode. Basically I don’t expect anything tomorrow so if we do manage to grab a point or more it will be a massive bonus from my perspective.

Of course we are capable of gaining a point or even three, but Everton are no pushovers either and in Leighton Baines they have a man who loves to score against us and who is bang in form. He’s not the only player to watch though as Roberto Martinez has danger men throughout the team, especially from set pieces. However this time at least we don’t have to watch out for Marouane Fellaini and his roving elbows…

Howay the lads!

  1. I must admit that away from home anything is a bonus. I would hope to get wins against the three relegated sides, but against sides like Everton we may well pick up something but I don’t expect it. Think we may score though.

  2. Pretty much agree with Prem, have it down as 2-2 in the predictor league(which I’m doing woeful in) at worst I’d like a battling performance with 100% effort from all…which is something we should get every week(but we don’t) 🙄

  3. Great! My mate says its 4pm. Spur of the moment decision. Setting off now and should be there by midday! Oi! Oi! 😎

  4. Dave – yeah we need Remy and Benny to have big games tomorrow to try and stop the threat of Baines and Coleman bombing forward all the time.
Personally I’d take 0-0 right now, but I think there will be goals in this one TBH, hopefully we get 1 more than the toffees 😛

  5. I rarely expect Newcastle to get anything away from home but 3 points would be a hugh boast for morale. Remy, Arfa have the ability to cause problems but our defence will have to defend like hell. Everton is a really well organised team.

  6. Cisse really needs to start showing his a proven goal scorer. I want him to do well but Gouffran is my number one choice up front.

  7. Sharpy I seen 1 or 2 saying that we should drop Benny to bring in someone more defensive to counter Everton, but I think thats a big mistake that Pards made a few times last season ie worrying to much about stopping the other team whilst leaving the other team with no one to worry them, if that makes sense

  8. Stem I do hope so mate. I was reading Brian Reade’s article in the Mirror yesterday and he thinks Poyet will be a very bad choice for the Scum . Not because he is a bad coach but because he is apparently cut from the same cloth as Di Canio in as much as he is arrogant and egotistical and rubs players up the wrong way. From his article – Former Spain international Vincente said of his old boss ” He is the worst person I’ve come across in football . ” For me he is a selfish person ,very egocentric . It is unacceptable that a manager makes fun of his players. I’ve seen things here that I have never seen in my career.”
Just the type of coach the 14 players haphazardly signed by DiCanio this summer need to boost their confidence then ,eh?

Just thought I would post it as a few of us wondered if he’d fit in at Toon like ,must confess the above is food for thought .

  9. Dave@11 ,Feel awful mate ,not slept hardly at all ,really tight chest too. My big worry is Lew getting it ,as coughing fits make him hurl and then his epilepsy meds don’t stay in him properly. 🙁 I’m washing my hands like an ocd sufferer at the mo 🙄

  10. Big D, it makes perfect sense mate.
At the same time, it would be naive for the toon to go to Everton with the “wrong” game plan. Everyone in football knows that Baines is one of the best left backs in europe at the moment, and we need to find a tactic which nullifies him as much as possible. Pardew can only set out his stall, and hope that the players execute his cunning plan.

One thing is for sure, if we “doubled up” on Baines, I’m sure he wouldn’t get a lip on and disappear out of the game. We’ll see what Benny has in his locker and whether he has the quality and nads to pull it off. (ably supported by the rest of his teammates of course).

The clue is in the tactical make up of the toons line up for tomorrow. Over to you Pardew 🙂

  11. Kimmy@14, reading that write up about Poyet, I reckon he would be a perfect choice for 5under1and 🙂

    He’ll take them dooooooooooooooooon !!!!

What’s interesting is that all of this stuff about Poyet comes out in the media now… At the same time it’s good that it does, cos now we know that there is NO-WAY that the bloke will end up at the toon. Carefully create a list of “Yes men” and there you have candidates for the toon job in 6 years when Pardew’s contract runs out / or he gets the England job 😆 😆 😆

  12. Anyone remember the battering that Poyes Brighton team gave us a few years back ? 😳 😳 😳 😳 🙁

      (Quote)

  13. Prem I thought it better if she is prepared, as in my case I just thought it was a bad cough so just got on with it.
But my lass started taking paracetamol when hers started and she got over it in a week.
Kim can you not get him the flu jab ❓ as our whole house ended up getting it so better be prepared 😉

      (Quote)

  14. Dave – I was trying to remember if it was last season or the season before (I think it was last season) when our game with Everton was televised. I was watching it in a bar in Tamworth, having taken the boy down to Thomasland.
Pardew dropped Ba in favour of a more defence minded formation and we were murdered in the 1st half – Everton should have been about 8-0 up at half time, it was a horrible watch.
Then he brought Ba on in the 2nd half and it gave them something to worry about. I think with our team and having Remy and Benny and Gouffran who are all prepared to run at opponents – that’s our best defence TBH mate.

      (Quote)

  15. Sharpy17@20, spot on. We need to give them something to worry about at the other end of the field and hope that our midfield can close the gaps. At the same time, everyone, including the mighty Hull City have targeted our right hand side / Debuchy. I hope Pardew has noticed that too.

      (Quote)

  16. Dave , They ain’t got the flu vaccines in yet at the docs ,else I would of had it along with lew. Hopefully it won’t get too much worse like.

      (Quote)

  17. Big Dave, who was asking for Benny to be dropped?
Baines is very good going forward but nothing too flash when it comes defending.. i guess like Martinez, he has morphed into an awesome mythical football person based on how good they could be… and not how good they actually are…. well over rated…

      (Quote)

  18. Kim – if not then I’d go with Sanmy. I know we’d have Goof as well but the left side is more natural to Sammy and he’s turned some good performances in recently. I’m sure Cisse would prefer it as well. Goof could then be a threat from the bench.

      (Quote)

  19. AMF….. I like you’re comment regarding Baines mate…”he has morphed into an awesome mythical football person based on how good they could be… and not how good they actually are…. well over rated…”….. 😆 😆 … All will be revealed tomorrow 🙂

  20. Lets see a wingback with end product. A wicked free kick. His defence is OK as well. Hmm can we have one.

      (Quote)

  21. Munich ,It’s just a cold/cough mate ,ok for me but a big problem for lew if he gets it, still we may get lucky you never know.

It’s Debuchy that I’m worried about tomorrow like ,every team is targeting him now ,he’s on a steep learning curve for sure.

      (Quote)

  22. Eminem 😉 I’ve watched a lot of Everton games.. Baines is a high light reel.. takes a cracking free kick but his so so defending is the reason he hasn’t moved to a bigger club..

      (Quote)

  23. Aussie, I haven’t watched any Everton games lately, but remember Baines from last season as being a cracking player who I would love to have in the toon side. If you have watched a lot of Everton games and don’t rate him as a defender then I respect that mate.
All will be revealed tomorrow 🙂

I would love to see HBA metaphorically pull his kegs down in front of the watching world on Sky tomorrow. It would push HBA’s standing even higher in the footy world, and ultimately see more cash flowing into the coffers for Cashley….kerching !!

If HBA won’t, or can’t make his mark on the game tomorrow then we will have learned something there too.

      (Quote)

  24. I read on Eds blog that Pardew’s playing a defensive style against Everton. I don’t know why he bothers ? We defiantly lose now! He can’t park the bus for 80 minutes and expect our defence not to concede goals ? The guys a fool! Cisse should be dropped for Gouffran that’s one thing he should at least have the sense to do.

      (Quote)

  25. Everton play a bit more attacking under Martinez. for this reason I’d keep Ben Arfa and try and play them at their own game.

I wouldnt go to defend as we seem a little soft at the back & everton will exploit this.

    Attack i say 😀

      (Quote)

  26. Well, watched a bit of Stoke Norwich. Two more teams who should finish below us this season. Both really weak 😯 As yet I haven’t seen much evidence of media darling Mark Hughes’s improvement to this Stoke team .. 🙄

      (Quote)

  27. What an amazing tactics formation of liverpool from rogers 3 4 1 2 😯 😈
I love it ❗ magnificient ..rodgers put his big balls on the pitch 😈 !
I give him respect for that ❗ more f against makems 😈 😆 ha ha….

      (Quote)

  28. Sturidge gerard suarez moises enrique (on wing right up front) …lucas henderson..7 offensif player very well organised… 😎
    great football…really…

      (Quote)

  29. Pains me to say it but Liverpool look a very, very good side. They are putting the mackems to the sword in 3rd gear really.

      (Quote)

  30. We’re back in a familiar position now, 16th. This is looking to be a very strange season. Both Man sides losing in the same day. Great for football I say. Knock them down and keep them down for as long as possible. Liverpool withstood a lot of early pressure before scoring. The sign of a good team. Looking forward to tomorrow’s game.

      (Quote)

  31. Isn’t it odd how much more fight they are showing without Dic , makes me wonder if our lot would perform to a higher level without Pards 😕

      (Quote)

  32. The makkems attack in droves, that is something that we have never managed under Pardew.

    Mignolet, you diddy 👿 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  33. Sunderland have made a game of it now. Showing some fight. What to expect against us? It’s crowded at 7 points in the league. We need a point against Everton.

      (Quote)

  34. If Sunderland had a decent fit striker they might be quite dangerous. As it is they lack finish more than anything. They’ll be looking for a striker in January as far as I can tell.

      (Quote)

  35. Moyes saying they are 5 or 6 world class players away from winning Champs League. That’s him telling his owners he needs players. They have dropped far behind Man City and even Spurs in player recruitment. Wenger seems to have unearthed another gem in Gnabry. They have clearly improved a great deal as well. Ramsey has been tremendous for them.

      (Quote)

  36. G2, the makkems have that striker in Fletcher. Fortunately (for us) he is injured for the next 6 weeks.

Kimtoon@48, they are probably ecstatic to see the back of the radgie, that brings at least another 10% out of them 😆

      (Quote)

  37. Aye Fletcher is decent Munich mate. But they clearly need another striker as well. We have a very tough schedule coming up. Three of the next 4 away followed by Chelsea (h) and Spurs (a). Horrible really. How many points for us in those 6 games? With some decent efforts perhaps 5. That would give us 12 from 11. Not good enough but can’t see much more. That might take us to 14th or so.

      (Quote)

  38. Sturridge has been excellent for Liverpool as well. A goal (hand ball) and 2 very nice assists. They deserve to be in 3rd place. A big worry for us at home.

      (Quote)

  39. Game owa,Suarez. I must be in the minority, I thought the scum have been poor today bar the odd 5 minute spell, better organised and tried harder than previous games but then they could hardly have got worse…apart from Giaccherini and Larssons set pieces nowt to be scared of there…hope the feckers go down and never come back up…fukn pond life 👿 😉

      (Quote)

  40. Richie mate don’t suger coat it. Just admit you don’t like Sunderland much. 😆 The problem is we aren’t playing like Liverpool and we have Pardew.

      (Quote)

  41. G2@58, I know mate, it’s not ower canny is it.
We’ll be in the bottom 5 by the time Norwich come to the toon at the end of November for the first “6 pointer” 👿 👿

      (Quote)

  42. I wonder what Jol is going to do with Fulham? They have been shocking. They needed to clear out a few of their older players last season and didn’t do it. Big changes needed there.

      (Quote)

  43. That’s what I see as well Munich mate @66. Big trouble coming unless we have a huge turnaround. Cisse must get going along with Benny, Remy, and Gouffy. We need scoring. The defense isn’t bad now as long as we don’t get injuries but it would soon turn shaky if that happens. Still waiting for Cabaye to recover form as well.

      (Quote)

  44. Yes I’m disgusted to see Liverpool doing so well Munich. It almost spoils the fact that Man City and Man U are struggling! But not quite. 😆

      (Quote)

  45. RT@68, I agree with you mate. They are no great shakes either and invited the makkems to attack them, and relied on Suarez and Sturridge to win the game. Fair enough like I suppose… 👿

      (Quote)

  46. Sunderland with a -10 goal difference already! Unbelievable. They are in a desperate state. Their owner will be pulling his hair out. Who would go in there and try to sort that lot out? 😆

      (Quote)

  47. Richie @68 unfortunately Liverpool have built a decent side. Sakho will get better and Toure has really solidified their defense. They’ve got a lot of goals and creativity in the side. Man U are digging themselves a fairly deep hole already. 😆 So nice to see it. A big question for me is Arsenal. They still look shaky at the back a lot of the time. Mertesacker’s lack of pace has been pointed out numerous times. But Arsenal are building up a fine attacking side again now. They will outscore a lot of teams this season.

      (Quote)

  48. We look very average so far compared with a lot of teams. Are we as good as Swansea, Everton, West Brom or Southampton? We’ll have to prove it.
