Everton v Newcastle – Premier League match preview

Toffees v Magpies
Toffees v Magpies
Alan Pardew must prepare his side for a daunting trip to Goodison Park where they will come up against a tough Everton side on Monday evening.

The Toffees may have lost one of their key players over the summer along with a manager who had them punching above their financial resources for some considerable time, but a new manager has brought a new approach whilst retaining that ‘hard to beat’ psyche that was synonymous with Moyes’ team.

They are unbeaten so far this season, but it is at home where perhaps the most startling statistics can be found. Not only are they unbeaten this season, they are also unbeaten in 2013 at Goodison Park and haven’t conceded a league goal at home since the very start of March. I thin you’ll agree that those are impressive stats…

Everton:

Steven Pienaar, Antolin Alcaraz and Leon Osman are all missing due to injury. Recalls for Tim Howard, Leighton Baines, Phil Jagielka, Kevin Miralles and Gareth Barry are all likely after they were benched for the midweek Capital One Cup defeat at Fulham.

Newcastle:

Yohan Cabaye, Loic Remy, Hatem Ben Arfa, Moussa Sissoko, Davide Santon and Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa alllook set to resume their roles in the first team after being rested against Leeds. Jonas Gutierrez and Steven Taylor join Ryan Taylor on the sidelines whilst Shola Ameobi is still struggling for fitness.

Previously…

Only a last minute goal from Demba Ba prevented Everton from doing the double over us last season as we managed to squeak a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park in the early part of the season before losing the return fixture at St James’ Park 2-1 despite Papiss Cisse scoring an early opener.

Overall the head-to-head record is pretty even with results tending to favour the home side. There have been 160 meetings between the two clubs previously with United just shading it with 64 victories compared to 61 for Everton.

Stats and facts…

Newcastle last beat Everton at Goodison in 2010 courtesy of a stunning by Hatem Ben Arfa. Before that though the last time we won at Everton was in 2001.

Assuming Gareth Barry plays,he will become only the 10th player to rack up 500 Premier League appearances.

Everton are the only team yet to be beaten in a league game this season. They have also had more draws this season than any other side.

Leighton Baines scored his 21st Premier League goal at West Ham last weekend. Only John Terry (32) has scored more goals as a defender.

Newcastle have conceded more headed goals (3) than any other side so far this season.

Final thought:

After daring to dream against Hull City I soon got slapped back down to earth and now I’m firmly in pessimistic mode. Basically I don’t expect anything tomorrow so if we do manage to grab a point or more it will be a massive bonus from my perspective.

Of course we are capable of gaining a point or even three, but Everton are no pushovers either and in Leighton Baines they have a man who loves to score against us and who is bang in form. He’s not the only player to watch though as Roberto Martinez has danger men throughout the team, especially from set pieces. However this time at least we don’t have to watch out for Marouane Fellaini and his roving elbows…

Howay the lads!

  1. I think there is scope to drop Cisse to the bench whilst away from home.
We need someone to hold the ball up as well as harass and put the opposition under pressure.
    Remy can do both!!

  2. Doesn’t matter who plays Pards will set us up to try and defend for 70 odd minutes and hope to nick one in the last 10, which won’t work as usual ,but hey they’ll work on that next week. 🙄

  3. Can Cisse finally use a goal to inspire himself into learning how to pass and control a football like premier league player once again? I guess we will find out tonight 😀 He has scored so give him the nod, Remy should out muscle Coleman and Benny should trip Baines over his own shoelaces.

I still remember Benny’s debut like it were yesterday, he absolutely destroyed them and got a goal even though he was on the left of a 4-4-2. Here’s hoping for a similar performance. An organised defence would be nice to see as well..

Remember when the wing positions were being fought between Jonas, Benny and Routledge? I was at the blackpool game (we lost) and I remember wondering what this French guy would be like.

  5. I have strong faith that we WILL be the team to make everton make their 1st league loss.

Faith in Tim Krul in handling baines free kicks.

    Faith in Ben arfa.

Faith that Alan Pardew will finally drop cisse to bench for this game.

3-1 Win for us.

  6. Andy-Aye. Routledge was never terrible for us to be fair to him, but it’s really strange how you look at players and teams and see where they end up. Routledge got displaced by a central midfielder who wasn’t too popular and hadn’t featured that much in his actual position let alone the right wing! Routledge was cast off like he had been at every other PL side and now looks the real deal, with Barton (who still looks good imo) playing for QPR!

When Benny arrived it put a rocket up Jonas as well, he was great for the few games after Benny. Didn’t he score after he came on against City when we played them in the same game Benny got injured in? He’s got more competition now and I think his heart is still in it, but I just don’t think there is anything left in his legs.

  7. Newkie I don’t expect a win, but it would not surprise me. Our team on it’s day is a match for Everton.

  8. Agree Prem – predicting anything this season is a minefield. Look at City and Utd or us v Hull. Not even guessing tonight but all good runs like Evertons come to an end sometime.

  9. Premandup!-you non committal dreamer 😆 This is why the premier league is the greates…blah blah blah 😀

I know what you’re getting at though. I’m sure all those who are convinced we played the most appalling football imaginable every weekend last year will dispute what I say and say we were lucky to get a point last year, but I thought we were unfortunate not to snatch all three, even though we played pretty poorly. Thing is though we had Ba bang in form (even though to start with he was on the bench!!! I can’t believe Pardew favoured him so much by letting him sit down!!) and I’m not convinced Cisse is confident enough yet to go up against a defence like Everton’s and do the business.

Hopefully I’m wrong though. It could be as simple as which Benny turns up to be honest.

  10. Is it just me or is anyone else kind of feeling like ‘uggh’ when it comes to supporting the toon? I feel bad 🙁

I just cannot get excited about games this season – even if its on TV

  11. I know we should lose. It’s obvious.

Just like Manure will thrash the baggies and Citeh will win every game.

    Ah… 😯

  12. Mark, you’re a brave man. Or just someone who likes getting his **** out in public.

I expect we’ll get beaten 1-0 tonight, but can anyone claim to be able to predict anything this season?

  13. Whumpie-you’d have to ask “peternakan” who heads the blog’s predictor league. I don’t actually know if he posts though…or any of the other top 8. So on that rationale, with me being in 9th, I am the blog’s best bet.

God, using that rationale makes me feel like a top bellend.

Troy-is this how you feel after every conversation? 😈

  14. We’re a bigger club than the likes of everton, swansea, southampton etc so we should be favourites and they should be the underdogs.

However due to crazy mismanagement we find ourselves at about the level of everton in terms of squad ability & realistic ambition. I.e. Our squad is as good as everton’s and we should have the same targets in terms of where we finish in the league and how far we go in the cups.

Overall, everton are the closest team to us with the only major difference being the managers and coaching staff.

The result tonight and more importantly the performance will show which manager is the better manager.

Remember pardew is one of the longest serving managers and martinez has only just begun.

  15. It doesn’t matter if we win, lose or draw. We need to perform well & play good football.

If pardew manages that i will give him full credit.

However if we spend most of the game on the backfoot and get a scrappy win it would be the worst thing as it would just cover up the cracks.

  16. Whats the logic in thinking tiote and anita are competing for a place in the starting 11?

They are hugely different types of players. Sure some of their roles overlap but most of it doesn’t.

Anita should start every game. It should be tiote vs sissoko.

  17. how on earth we didnt sniff a loan deal for Lukaku or Ba is beyond me.. just shows how skint we are when we miss deals like this. We chased Gomis for months then ask him to take a lower wage 🙄 it was never gonna happen really..

ambition isnt our strongest point like.. but anyway!

  18. @santii

I think we’re more valuable, have bigger revenue and more fans but i guess it depends on your definition.

I would say we’re a bigger club than monaco but they have some incredible players.

    Do you agree/disagree?

  19. It does seem odd that we didn’t get lukaku or ba.

I know both wanted to try and get into the first 11 at chelsea but how did everton manage it and not us? What was different??

  20. My team would be:
    —————Krul————
    Debs—Mbiwa—colo–santon
    ——–cabaye—anita——–
    ————-ben arfa———-
    Gouffran——cisse——-remy

      (Quote)

  21. Ben arfa cannot be played on the right. Debuchy gets targeted because he’s new and ben arfa doesn’t defend enough.

Gouffran would do a more reliable job.

What more does gouffran need to do (instead of cisse being ****) to get into the team. He is way too underrated.

      (Quote)

  22. i seriously hope Anita doesnt get dropped. Tiote has done nowt to get into the team while Anita has proven to Pardew that he can hack it at this level and seems to be getting better with each game..

  26. Well tonight’s game will have its fair share of stoppages – Cisse, Lukaku and Jelavic were all in the top 5 offenders for being offsite last season …. In case you’re wondering they were 5th, 4th and 2nd with Holt 3rd and Benteke way out in the lead

      (Quote)

  27. Thanks djebs9 🙂

Wow, couple of bold decisions by pardew. I hope they work out.

I think pardew is less loyal/more ruthless to some of his players after last year. If thats the case, he has improved as a manager.

  28. Very good choice from pards..(incredible ❗ )..i say that ❗
Goof for cisse is a better tactics..goof can keep the ball up front and move quikly and better than cisse.. 💡 😀 same for remy… ❗
And ben arfa is the most best x factor for this games…he is the strawbery on the cake ❗ 😉 😎 …!
pardew find this team alone ❓ 😆 ..or listen the fans…hmmm 🙄
Great skad cabs injury association tiote (hungry) anita (better) and sissoko…hmm…
