Game On! Everton v Newcastle

Game On at Goodison!
Game On at Goodison!
Welcome one and all to this ‘Game On’ article which will take us through every twist and turn of our trip to Everton this evening.

A Monday evening kick-off and a live broadcast on Sky will ensure that watching the match is more accessible to many so putting on a decent showing is a must.

However Everton are not an easy side to beat. They remain the only unbeaten side in the Premier League this term and haven’t lost at Goodison Park in 2013. They’ve not conceded a goal at home since March with West Ham, Fulham, QPR, Manchester City, Stoke City, West Brom and Chelsea all visiting the blue half of Merseyside and failing to find the back of the Everton net. It’s a tough ask for sure.

United will have to be at their best if they are to trouble the home side. A raft of first team players are set to return to the side (team news will be added in below as and when it becomes available!) after beating Leeds, but with the greatest of respect Leeds weren’t exactly a test and were comfortably beaten. The defeat to Hull still sits in the memory and it’s up to the players to banish that.

As mentioned earlier, the match is being shown live here in the UK and, of course, overseas so finding a stream shouldn’t prove to be too much of an issue. If you fancy helping out though then please, by all means, feel free to leave a link to any streams in the ‘comments’ section below.

That’s just about it as there is no need to blather on any longer. Will United hammer the Toffees? Or will we come unstuck at Goodison?

Howay the lads!

  1. With respect couldn’t disagree more Brisvegas @288. I think the blog is great and we have contributions from many with a wide range of opinions.

  2. Tiote didn’t look fit to me. In that case why was he playing? I’m pleased Williamson came on and did well in the second half, I’m not saying he’s great but he is far better than some say on here. I sounds like we were too weak at the back in the first half and Collo was beaten far too easily.

  3. Don’t follow you there Wellington. I approach every game with optimism. I thought we would lose 2-1 but play well. We lost 3-2 but played horribly for an entire half. We have no consistency as I’ve said many times. I’ve predicted a bottom 10 start from the beginning of the season based on our inactivity in summer, our lack of depth, our DoF, our owner, and our manager. A recovery is still possible if we get a decent manager in despite all that but it’s getting less and less likely. Having the 3 stooges run the club was never a good idea.

  4. Gouffran easily the player that tried the hardest. He was everywhere, defence, midfield & attack. He even showed signs of being so tired when he couldn’t keep up at the end.

I’ve said it so many times but we need to play 3 centre backs. Williamson gets stick because he’s not confident with the ball at his feet. It’s not his fault; people have been shouting at him to hoof it all his life.

“I sounds like we were too weak at the back in the first half and Collo was beaten far too easily.”

That would be putting it lightly… Looked like they had all just met each other and turned up for a kick about down the park.

Mbiwa was bad but Coloccini was shocking and Santon wasn’t much better. Debuchy was the best out of the 4 but that isn’t saying to much… Tiote offered no protection against the midfield runners either which certainly didn’t help much.

  6. BB I am not saying that Pards shouldn’t carry some of the blame, because he should, but there is no way the players should be getting away with that 1st half performance

      (Quote)

  7. agree there KK. Goofy had the best game for us.
The thing is we have a few runners but not many that can thread the ball. Anita can sometimes but a lot of his balls are inaccurate. Sissoko needs to hit the gym, he gets brushed off too easy, same as Cisse.

I wonder if JFK saw Lukaku and thought who’s he?, didnt realise he played for Everton.. bless him, he tried his very best.

      (Quote)

  8. Santii – Benny was a disappointment again tonight!. If you’re going to talk yourself up then you need to back it up on the pitch like!.
Sissoko disappointed me tonight as well. Goof done well and I’m desperately not trying to like Remy incase he goes back to QPR – he’s bloody good though!.

      (Quote)

  9. G2@305 – if you’re saying that we’ve been in poor form but still (roughly) gotten the points we’d expect, then logically that would lead to the belief that the team will get more points later on in the season when the form comes together.

But I will not insist that you be logical. It’s a free country. 😉

Anyway, I’m off. Looking forward to the next match. 🙂

  10. Unbelievably **** in the 1st half. Pardew got it horribly wrong. Chose the wrong tictacs… Second half marginally better but why do we keep shooting ourselves in the foot in first half.

Time for a change, but who? Please god not JFK…

      (Quote)

  11. Any one else think its time Elliot was made our first choice keeper .I thought Krul was gash as well tonight and am coming to the conclusion he is vastly over rated .

      (Quote)

  12. I’ll have to ponder that one Wellington @311. I’ve said we’ve started the season poorly, played poorly in 5 of 6 games and a lot of it lies at the feet of the manager. Our form may never improve with Pardew in charge and we may end up bottom 5. I’ve also said we have an idiot for an owner and one for a DoF as well. It’s all opinion but there are facts to support that point of view. I may not be a Vulcan but I think my logic is fine thanks. But you can always just ignore the posts you don’t agree with mate.

      (Quote)

  13. REACTIONARY Parsnip is stuffed again by a half decent manager, has to swap it round and make changes at half time but it’s too late. We need a manager who can see thing happening, Pardew is 45 minutes behind other top flight managers and needs a note pad and pencil to write down his reactions.

      (Quote)

  14. If Pards has any balls he will call them all in for a very early training session tomorrow ,make the training a hell the whole of the day then in the afternoon resign 👿

      (Quote)

  15. @sharpy

Remy is a good player and i will do good for us but did you see his post match interview when he scored those two against Hull. He was delighted and didn’t seem to give a fook about us just losing against a poor team. Seems like a total **** to me. If he keeps scoring goals though i don’t really care 😆 😆

Gouffran, Cabaye, Williamson can hold their heads up and say they put in a good shift tonight the rest were just embarrassing. (Cisse was ok but wasn’t really on long enough)

      (Quote)

  16. @MARK

Sissoko is too soft. How someone that big is so light weight i don’t know. I think he’s still used to the french league so hopefully he’ll get better.

Anybody who knows me knows that i’m not a fan of Pardew but…….i think Pardew did most things right today.

    He must have

      (Quote)

  17. “Anybody who knows me knows that i’m not a fan of Pardew”

    **** me JJ hadn’t noticed since when??? …… 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  18. Every offensive player will be disappointing if we play like first half.
What the **** to sit so deep in this pitch. We cannot keep pressure.
And Really Santon needs to stop his useless run offensively sometimes and try to be effective as leftback, because he was a nightmare today. Like Colo and Mapou were to.

I think we have the players to finish high in the table, but we need to play to his strengths. So don’t ask Benny to track back all game long, he is all the time poor when he has to do that. So don’t play him, use him as sub if you are so afraid of the left backs of other teams. ANd during winter sell him, because its useless in this kind of formation.

      (Quote)

  19. **** me. Just watched Pardew’s post match interview.
    Talk about apathetic.
He’d give Bryan Robson a run for his money.

    …enthusiasm please?

That was the look of a man who knows he’s facing a hit.
Chief Sneezing Horse’s days are numbered. 😎

  20. This is where Jenas’ fishbowl is a legit concern. Our players hear they are world class one week then need to be sold the next. We are isolated and have no other source of opinion, the players have no reference to reality.

      (Quote)

  21. Bloody *****

    Three things

    1) we need some fecking English. Get rid of Mbwia and lob in Taylor. Get dummett in for santon. Who in my book is a winger not a lb.

    2) tell pards to grow a sack and get em all doing extra training on how to pass to remy the whole time as he’s the only one who can score

    3) get cisse to wake up stop looking so gormless work it out mate. It’s football

      (Quote)

  22. Pards got sold out in the summer. Gomis would at least be an improvement on ameobi and would have done a similar type job to lukaku.

I feel for pards he just has to buck it up and go with it. He’s in the biggest job he will ever get so he’s got to get on with it. Get cabs in keep cisse dropped and get dummett and Taylor back. Give us some good old British spirit.

      (Quote)

  23. But if you hear the Pardew interview in skysports, he really believes that the substitution made all the differences.
But I think it’s just a combined element of 2 things that really change a little bit the game, when you are up 3-0 at half time, you stop play in general, that’s happen to Everton and at half time we decided to play more high in the pitch, so with the early goal we built a little bit momentum.

the strategy is the most important in a game, let the player enjoy play their game, you will see more good result at the end of season.

      (Quote)

  24. Santii – I suppose I never thought of it that way. Ba was simple to that as well I guess. But the Ba and Remy score goals, where Cisse invites people for BBQs but can’t hit a barn door 😆

So 7 points from 6 games should average out at around 42-44 points in 38 games. When you consider that most managers aim for 40 points as a survival benchmark – is 42-44 points likely to be enough to see us 10th spot?.
Well 10th spot was WH on 46 points – but equally we secured 41 points to finish 16th.

I fear with Pardew at the helm, we are as likely to be looking over our shoulder and 10th would be an achievement rather than minimum. Rather than we can achieve 10th but could kick on to 7th with a comfortable gap between the other teams below us.

      (Quote)

  25. we definitely need to change tact and sign some British players. It was canny refreshing seeing Baines, Barry, Mcarthy, Coleman, Osman, Jagielka & man of the moment Barkley playing to their strengths. Not all great players but It makes you wonder if thats what we need if we aim to be middle of the table fodder..

      (Quote)

  26. Shame we didnt sign Martinez, he plays decent football with an good team, but I suppose Pardew deserves another chance for getting us to 5th 🙄

It does help tho when your chairman supports you with similar ambitions and some cash to spend in the transfer market

      (Quote)

  27. anyway enuf footy for me for one night, i’ll go to bed knowing we’re on level points with the Champions Man U 😀

      (Quote)

  28. @Mark

I don’t like Martinez and think he has been a bit over rated just for keeping Wigan in the league (Barely) but he does set his team up to attack and try and win games.

Makes you wonder what we would be like if we had an attack minded coach instead of a defend for your lives kinda coach.

      (Quote)

  29. Mark-that’s the difference. Moyes was given time and then a big chunk of cash to spend on top english players-and then given another windfall after selling Lescott for a ridiculous fee. They also have a good youth set up, unlike us.

The real money is made in selling English players-every team has proven that, yet we’re buying French players, usually on the cheap, but are we going to make big bucks off any of them? I don’t think so.

      (Quote)

  30. Bed, Mark? It’s only quarter past 8 am. Western Australian fans will be just getting up about now 😉 and then complaining kick offs in the middle of the night.

      (Quote)

  31. Santii

I agree mate, although he had a great cup run and his squad wasnt the best at Wigan. Give Martinez our squad & I’m sure we’d be higher up the league.

      (Quote)

  32. …no passion on the pitch. Not enough Englishmen. Little interest. No fight. No love. But they wanna know what love is. They want us to show them.

    Bloody Foreigner.

      (Quote)

  33. It’s 8.15am and I just woke up.. God I hate night games, just hate em 👿 😉

Well the defending in the first half was laughable.. fuk me, conceding a goal directly from a goalkeepers kick 😯 … school boy stuff 😕 .. Santon almost nearly didn’t nearly get anywhere near blocking the cross for the first goal. And to make matters worse M’Biwa almost nearly didn’t nearly get anywhere near tracking Lakuku’s run into the box..
We have a number of fair weather footballers in our side and they need to be dropped if they are not putting in the effort.. Ben Arfa and Sissoko are two that immediately come to mind…
Wasn’t expecting a win anyway but it really pathetic defending. Shambolic, I am just going to 😆 so I don’t get 👿

      (Quote)

  34. For the record.. me saying “almost nearly didn’t nearly get anywhere near blocking the cross” & “almost nearly didn’t nearly get anywhere near tracking Lakuku’s run into the box” was just me trying to put “nowhere fucking close” in nicer terms

      (Quote)

  35. Yep, Oz, too many players with no consistency – Debuchy, Mbiwa, Sissoko, Ben Arfa, Tiote. Pressed better – like we did at Villa – in the 2nd half and, ****** me, almost made an unlikely come back.

By the way, Oz, how’s your fantasy league going? The cream should be rising to the top by now. 😎

      (Quote)

  36. Re the fantasy league: A wise man once told me that it is early in the season Oz and not to get ahead of ones self 😉

      (Quote)

  37. Last week I wrote an article about the amount to steel in our players and who was really up for a fight.. Last nights performance really showed that we are hot and cold when it comes to bringing the fight to an opposition team. This can’t happen at the level we are playing at. If you are 10% off your game you will get punished and we were well below 10% off and look what happened. We were like one of the SD flashing bill board signs as St James Park. *******50% off all player performances today only!!******** 😆

      (Quote)

  38. Jonas and Shola were missed big time last night. One or both could have won that game for us

      (Quote)

  39. Didn’t manage to catch the game last night.
Anyone care to give me a round up?
Was Pardew’s substitution of HBA justified?
Reading on general sports forums that Mbiwa put in one of the worst displays in Premiership history 😯

      (Quote)

  40. ST we lost 3-2 😉
I reckon Pard’s was right with his subs as was shown by the much improved 2nd half performance, people will say that was nowt to do with Pard’s as Everton just sat back and played in 2nd gear as they had the game won, true to a degree but then Everton were only 3 nowt up because we started defensively/negatively (Pard’s fault imo) and started in 2nd gear. So if anyone wants to say how good Everton and Martinez were 1st half when were playing in a low gear then they also have to give Pard’s credit for the 2nd half…unless of course they are just haters and can’t give a rational opinion 😉 😆
Yep Mbiwa was terrible in defence but he wasn’t the only one, Willo the best defender overall 😯 😉

      (Quote)

  41. Solano ,We was **** the two second half goals merely papering over the cracks of a truly awful display. In truth THAT was embarrassing last night and not one PL team will fear playing us after that . 🙁

      (Quote)

  42. Jamie carragher made an interesting point last night in that he can never remember Toon having a good defence in the PL ,I would agree ,infact I was thinking just that prior to him stating it. He added that when he was with Liverpool they always played us expecting to get 2 or 3 easy goals such was our defence. Truth is other than our 5th place season where we had a tight back line for maybe 9 or 10 games at the start we have always had the tendency to self destruct ,but at least we had goals in us .

      (Quote)

  43. In truth we failed to get any points from a game where anything would have been a bonus.

We have dropped 5 points at home, WHam & Hull and gained 3 away Villa. Our “problem” is our goal difference. Yet we have scored 7 which is better than 11 other teams, and conceded 11 whereas only Sun…. have conceded more. We can clearly see where the problem is.

So do we set up more defensively to minimise the problem. Just attack and hope to score more. Or pack up and go home. Coz we ain’t buying any more defenders until January and they need time to settle in.

      (Quote)

  44. Pardew is responsible for team performance therefore he needs to go.

Did anyone see last night when Baines was booked early doors? So why did the FOOL not switch HBA from left to right in order to have a go at Baines? Because he is totally inept!

He looks like a dead man walking IMO..

      (Quote)

  45. Prem ,all I know is our defence needs sorting out ,basic stuff was missing last night ,absolutely no one picking up Lukaku time and time again ,I mean have they never watched the guy . Pards was a defender he coaches them it’s up to him to sort them out or drop the under performers . Willo coming on was a good decision by him I will give him that at least he’s not afraid to head the ball like.

      (Quote)

  46. Kim…I’d rather the defence was sorted out before getting another striker in Jan tbh…assuming we sign anyone 🙄

      (Quote)

  47. PREM @356 yep it’s fair to say not many expected the win ,but the level of the first half performance was disturbing to say the least .

      (Quote)

  48. Richie ,I agree mate it’s pointless scoring if we are shipping loads. I was really shocked at how poor Mbiwa was last night and Colo is not marshalling that backline enough ,somehow the whole unit there looks lightweight ,unbalanced. I’m no tactician but I can’t figure how quality players can look such a mess,

      (Quote)

  49. Prem@356-It was the same last year, people making out that we don’t have any goals in us, or whenever we get one it is a fluke or good luck or a wonder goal. Cabs goal was a beauty, but every team scores them and many teams get “something outta nothing” -like Everton did with two launched balls that sent our defence into disarray. Especially the third goal.

Yes our attacking play is and has been poor and boring for years, but it’s our defence that keeps letting us down in terms of results. In particular it’s the lack of any stones in the side that cost us time and time again because everyone looks to the floor once we concede, not to a leader. Goof should be captain based on the fact he actually works hard every match, who else can say the same? Colo is a fair weather captain and it tells every time we concede.

      (Quote)

  50. Big Dave I agree the players have to shoulder a
A large amount of the responsibility.
But generally they try to carry out the instructions of the
    manager.
What I see is total confusion and a lack of understanding.
Pardoh either can’t get his message thru or
    The message doesn’t make sense.
    Something is very wrong 👿

      (Quote)

  51. Hitman-most would consider sacking Pardew good news now I think, even though it will likely mean Kinnear stepping in.

Richie-you aint half **** at both the predictor and the fantasy league are you mate. Where do you get your tips from, Dave? 😆

      (Quote)

  52. Look at Newkie gob off after a decent week in the fantasy league 😆
He was strangely quiet before that?? 😎

      (Quote)

  53. My only saving grace from last night was that I had Lakaku as captain of my fantasy team. Cisse not such a good choice as vice captain.

      (Quote)

  54. Watch out for the ban hammer Newkie.. we all know Big Dave’s limitations but you best not voice them on here….. or else 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  55. Strange night for all. Truly dreadful first half and Willo the hero of the second. What on earth does Pardew tell them for gods sake especially at the back. Their third goal was the third I can remember (Suarez and Bale) when either Colo or Krul should have claimed it.

Bit of perspective though – if we’d got a result over hull nobody would have complained at losing 3-2 at Everton. They’re a very good team with a midfield that’s miles ahead of ours. And a manager!
What’s happened to Hatem? Has Pardew finally pissed him off. Something’s going on. He’s gone from world class to rubbish in two hours.
    Any clues?

      (Quote)

  56. Newkie…It’s a marathon not a sprint mate 😉 my main downfall is never being able to predict a Toon loss and having 3 toon players in my team 😆

      (Quote)

  57. Dave will never ban me, this blog would drown in negativity levels even he wouldn’t cope with without me!

Richie-those two are probably why then mate! I hate predicting toon wins and I shipped Santon and Remy out early doors, only Benny remains 😆 😥
