Game On! Cardiff v Newcastle

Game On at Cardiff
Game On at Cardiff
Welcome one and all to this ‘Game On’ article which today will take us through every twist and turn of our trip to Cardiff City.

This has been branded a “must win” game by players like Vurnon Anita who stresses how important it is for the “real” United to turn up this afternoon.

However Cardiff will make it hard for us. We always seem to struggle against newly promoted teams and the Welsh side are determined to stay in the league which of course means that they must rack up points, especially at home in front of their own fans. Only Tottenham have won there this season, and they just managed it, so that will give you an idea how tough Cardiff can make it for us.

The match preview was posted online yesterday and can be viewed by clicking the link at the bottom of this article. It’s full of stats, facts, injury news and a brief history of the fixture so is worth a read if you haven’t already had a peek at it.

Team news will be added in fully below as and when it becomes available so keep your eyes peeled for that, but also I’d like you to keep your eyes peeled for a stream of the game. It’s a 3pm kick-off which means that live TV broadcast here in the UK is out of the question here in blighty, but it is being shown overseas so picking up a stream should be fine. As I’ve said though, if you do find one then post the link in the ‘comments’ section below.

I think I’ve just about covered everything so now it’s up to the players to do the rest. Hopefully they can play for a whole 90 minutes, not just 45, and that’s if they show up at all. With games coming up against Sunderland, Tottenham, Liverpool and Chelsea thought, the need for points today is great indeed!

Howay the lads!

  1. We’re in 10th right now but will it last? I see Ashley was there with his lady friend. I guess she must have forgiven him for the speedo malfunction.

  2. If manure lose tonight, then the world has gone totally mad 👿
    Howay you red devils 😛
    urgh 😈

  3. I thought Santon was at fault for their goal. He made a lunge in the centre of the field at the top of the box and missed. Once the ball was switched to our left we were toast with Odemwingie all alone.

  4. Cant believe a little bit GD can make so much difference 😕
Strange how some people dismiss it as irrelevant.

  5. BB@ 390 Oh dear, maybe you should go back and read what was actually said as opposed to making things up 😉 😳 😆

  6. BB-To be fair, I really don’t care if we’re 9th or 11th. We won this weekend, and were value for it and looked decent. That’s all I care about. Being marginally ahead of villa or manure until the next match is of no interest to me.

  7. ha ha Richie.
I’m only pulling your leg fella.
Basking in the afterglow of a 3 point victory.

Newkie – I agree we looked ok today, especially in the 1st half.
We do struggle tho when teams press us.
I still not looking forwards to the cesspool game tho.

      (Quote)

  8. Cisse remains a huge concern I would think. Contributing very little. We can’t afford a passenger. No goals in 13 league games now. He pressed occasionally but that’s about it. We can be a better side without him I’m sorry to say.

      (Quote)

  9. Newkie I thought BB was actually having a go a me for my goal difference rant yesterday mate. I still think it’s a key stat and that we are on the wrong side of zero. As long as we have a negative goal difference we aren’t playing well enough with the players we have. I’m still not convinced Willo is going to be a long term answer @CB. Pardew will stick with him until he has a shocker now though. He started playing hoofball and giving possession away a lot in the second half which allowed them to turn the game around at least until they ran out of time.

  10. I really wish this was pardews last game.

I hope people haven’t just changed their opinion after a win which could have gone either way.

      (Quote)

  11. BB…Will you join me in a glass of champers mate as we’ve improved our GD by 1? 😉

TBF the 2nd half was always going to turn out like that especially after their 1st we were always going to be put under the cosh a bit as most away teams are when they’re just the 1 goal up.

  12. I would have to think it will be hard to accept seeing Pardew sit Ben Arfa but continue to play Cisse. Who has had more positive impact for us so far this season? They don’t play the same position but we have an in form striker (Remy) and Gouffran has been very good as well. Do we need Cisse in the starting 11 or Ben Arfa? I’m asking myself that question and I know who I would choose.

      (Quote)

  13. G2… I don’t think he sees Willo as a long term fix but he was certainly needed as a short term fix, I think Pard’s got it spot on there, as he did with dropping Benny imo 😯

      (Quote)

  14. Willo isn’t as bad as some people say. He’s a decent squad player who offers more than STaylor.

I still think we need to play 3 centre backs with debuchy and santon as the wide players.

Remy, gouffran + 3 others from:
    cisse
    Ben arfa
    marveaux
    Anita
    Cabaye
    Tiote
    Sissoko

Personally i would pick the following 5 most games:
    Remy
    Gouffran
    Anita
    Cabaye
    Marveaux

    5 defenders & 5 attackers.

      (Quote)

  15. I thought Benny did ok when he came on.
With a decent striker we would have finished Cardiff off sooner.
    😕
2 weeks to get a game plan against cesspool.

      (Quote)

  16. BB…He did but I think sometimes players need a kick up the ****, especially the flair players, just to show them they’re not irreplaceable….Pardew should have tried it with a few players last year.

      (Quote)

  17. Richie would you keep playing Cisse though mate? And who do we play at CB alongside Colo? I think Saylor and Mbiwa have to compete for the position in the long run. One of them at least has to be one of our 2 starting CB’s when Colo leaves.

      (Quote)

  18. G2…I would have today definitely, against Liverpool not sure, obviously Pard’s big problem is the lack of options we have up front…maybe we should have considered signing a striker in the transfer window 😆

Mbiwa is a quality player he just hasn’t settled in completely yet and I think long term he’ll be our nailed on starter when Colo goes and then you have Willo and Saylor and I honestly don’t think there’s much difference between the 2, I do think we need to sign another CB…as a starter alongside Mbiwa(long term)

      (Quote)

  19. Santon continues to be a defensive liability. He and Cisse are the 2 weakest points in the side now. Will Pardew make changes? I thought Debuchy had a decent game and Tiote was good as well.

      (Quote)

  20. Very interesting comments Richie @408. You make a lot of sense. Yes I think we’re a striker, a CB and a winger short still. Earn your money in January Joe.

      (Quote)

  21. Mbiwa is a champions league player. He’s captained a team against psg and led them to win a title. There is no contest between mbiwa vs staylor/williamson.

That being said, williamson offers good height protection. We would be completely solid with colo, willo and mbiwa playing together.

With the type of fullbacks we have (they’re more like wingers) we should play 343 or 532 or some other similar combination (3412, 3313 etc)

      (Quote)

  22. Good post Richie @ 408
Cisse had to play today for me. But once again he has proved to be not up to the job IMO
I really don’t think we can afford to carry him versus Cesspool.
It really is a **** state of affairs to get in.
We have been calling for a dedicated CB for years.
    This club is mentally deranged

      (Quote)

  23. Can Sunderland actually win this? If they do Moyes is in big trouble. His time may be running out or will they just spend big time in January and stick with him? Not clear to me. If true that they turned down Mourinho for the job then they must surely be regretting it already. 😆

      (Quote)

  24. Is it me or does Moyes look a little tense on the sideline? 😆 This is just wonderful to see from ManU. It looks so good on them. I can even put up with Sunderland winning just to see ManU fall down the table.

      (Quote)

  25. Christ, some people…

I seriously don’t know what game they are watching.

Thought Cisse did everything but score today. I honestly thought he lead the line superbly and worked his socks off to press the Cardiff defense.

I guess if some people want to find someone to ***** about they’ll find it…

Ben Arfa has been shocking the last two games. That’s why he got dropped. And we won and played far better without him. Yet people ***** he didn’t play.

He must earn his place and work as hard as the rest.

      (Quote)

  26. Man United are in trouble. But they’d be idiots to sack Moyes seven games into the season.
Anyone taking over from Fergie was going to be under huge pressure.

He needs to be given as least two seasons.

      (Quote)

  27. Do you really think Cisse was good JJ @416? I usually agree with your comments but for me his overall play is very poor. Put one well over the bar in the first half and really can’t beat a man. Anyway I’m hoping to re-watch the game and see if I’ve missed something. No goals in 13 straight league games though. That’s not a great stat for a lead striker.

      (Quote)

  28. JJ…You’d think they’d have known that Moyes usually starts the season **** then gets better and made allowances for it 😉

      (Quote)

  29. I can’t see anybody getting 2 seasons at ManU JJ. They will see what it looks like in late November as long as they are a top 8 side by then. If they are going to stay with him they will spend big time in January. That’s my thought anyway mate. And Richie maybe a draw would be the best thing then mate? 😆

      (Quote)

  30. JJ – Moyes wont be sacked. No way.
Cisse needs to score goals to keep his place mate. Its as simple as that.
He is an NUFC number 9 striker, He sole job is to score goals.
If he cant score goals then take the shirt off him and give him a different one.
I’m sorry you don’t agree with this simple point.

      (Quote)

  31. Toby,
In your opinion, which I very seldom agree with.

Kind of makes me appreciate Pardew as a manager when I hear other opinions and see how bad they are. You lot make Pardew seem like Fergie. 😉

      (Quote)

  32. BB,
I agree he needs to start scoring goals. In fact, I’ll agree he’s been poor overall of late. But for goodness sake, acknowledge his contribution today. He played a big part.

      (Quote)

  33. JJ @416 agree completely mate Cisse imo played well today but unless he scores a boat load of goals like he did when he first came their are people who are going to slag him off no matter what .

      (Quote)

  34. JJ – I agree. Cisse played well today and would make a good midfielder.
I just want to see him scoring some goals for a change.
    I miss shearer.

G2…Nope, Man Utd win the only acceptable result for me 😉
    and for me too.
Keep the scum losing til after we have played them.
Don’t want them getting any big ideas against us.
    **** em 😛

      (Quote)

  36. Geordie,
    From my view point.

    – He chased down every ball and put the Cardiff defenders under pressure.
    – He won nearly every aerial ball and often found a team mate with his flick-on (something he’s usually poor at).
    – He broke the line with some well timed runs, keeping the Cardiff defense deep which gave Remy more space and time.
    – He set up Remy’s goal with a powerful strike from a very narrow angle that the keeper couldn’t handle.
    – He held the ball up well. Very seldom gave possession away.
    – He never stopped following up on other players efforts trying to pounce on any error by the Cardiff keeper.

He had one half chance in the second half which people will criticize him for, but if you look at the replay, the ball was whipped in and took a late deflection to change its path about two yards in front of him.

He’s lacking confidence in front of goal. But he did a very good job today. And I don’t remember his wasting any clear cut chances.

      (Quote)

  37. Ok lads it’s clear I need to re-watch the game and see what I missed with Cisse. As for ManU Richie you must need them to win for your predictions mate! 😆 It was nice to see them get a scare though.

      (Quote)

  38. Cisse was nowt special 2day, dithered a cpl of time and should of had a goal but took another touch instead.

I doubt he’d be a decent midfielder, he has no control his passing is poor and he doesnt go past players

      (Quote)

  39. i think i’ll join you G2.

JJ did you have a good stream 2day… he set up remys goal…lol it was a save by the keeper… 🙄

      (Quote)

  40. BB
If England had dropped Shearer because he hadn’t scored in 12 games they’d have missed out on one hell of a good striker in Euro 96.

I’m not saying Cisse is as good as Shearer. But all top strikers have these spells. To my knowledge, the is the first really barren spell of Cisse’s career.

Demba Ba is having an even worse spell in his career. Yet so many want him back. He isn’t even considered for Senegal now.

      (Quote)

  41. G2….I do have it down as a 1-3 win 😉 …however I’d like to see Sunderland lose enough games to take them out of the football league and off my tv set forever 😈

      (Quote)

  42. Mark 439

Now you are only making yourself look silly.

Whose shot could the keeper not handle? It was Cisse’s shot which led to Remy’s goal.

He was left flat footed after a good save. And Remy just had to place it in the far corner. Still a great finish.

Are you denying Cisse set up the goal?

      (Quote)

  43. I like Cisse and want to persist with him but Shearer brought much more to the table than Cisse could ever do. totally different players

      (Quote)

  44. Let’s look to the next 4 games for Cisse. I understand he played better but the whole team was better in the first half. I want to see what he has in the way of goals by the half way mark. If Cisse has more than 4 in the first 19 I will be shocked (but hugely relieved). Remy has 5 in his first 5 with us and doesn’t need the ball on a plate to score. Just playing devil’s advocate a little here. 😀

      (Quote)

  45. Cisse put the effort in. He chased and harassed the opposition so he did ok.

However he didn’t do much else so i wouldn’t say he did great. He did ok. Nothing more.

We do know that his performances are the way they are because he’s not being played right. He can’t lead the line. He’s just a finisher and needs someone else to knock it down or lay it off.

Remy and gouffran are being played wide mostly so cisse is almost btrying to battle two centre backs.

      (Quote)

  46. I’m not sure I like “Mark the negga”, Mark the fence sitting splinter **** was a much nicer person 😆

      (Quote)

  47. lol it was not a set-up silly boy 😛

it was a save by the keeper, cisse had no intention of shooting for the keeper to parry it to Remy.. keepers assist.. or deflection. ne way a set-up.. specs savers is open until 8..

      (Quote)

  48. If we had 11 Ben Arfa’s in the team it’d be just as good as having one.

He needs to learn to play in a team. Only then will he reach his full potential. by his age, he should have that right by now.

If we play this well every week, I’ll be happy to see him sit bench for Cisse till the end of the season.

      (Quote)

  49. Remy’s second was top class. Cisse would never have scored that one. His shot is completely gone. Haven’t seen a decent attempt from the top of the box from him in ages. He managed to hit the goalie with a toe poke leading to the first goal, I would agree with that. I’m afraid I side with Mark. Cisse couldn’t polish Shearer’s boots.
