Newcastle v Liverpool – Premier League match preview

Mags v Reds
Mags v Reds
Newcastle take on Liverpool at St James’ Park for the first time since the Reds handed out a walloping on Tyneside at the tail end of last season.

The final score was 6-0 that day and in all honesty it could have been more. We were woeful and even though it didn’t end up costing us our Premier League status a defeat like that hurts all the same.

However if it is still fresh in my mind then the chances are that it is still going to be fresh in the minds of others including, hopefully, the players that were embarrassed on that day. Most of them will more than likely be playing again tomorrow and if a defeat like that doesn’t inspire a reaction then I don’t know what will. The question is will a reaction be enough against a Liverpool side who have started the season extremely well?

Newcastle:

Fabricio Coloccini will miss the game after picking up a groin injury whilst away on international duty with Argentina while his compatriot Jonas Gutierrez is also unavailable after returning to his homeland for personal reasons.

Steven Taylor is available again leaving Ryan Taylor and Massadio Haidara as Alan Pardew’s only injury concerns.

Liverpool:

Glen Johnson, Aly Cissokho and Joe Allen should be available to Brendan Rodgers after recovering from injury. However Coutinho is unlikely to feature as he continues to recover from a shoulder operation.

Previously…

As mentioned earlier, the last meeting between the two sides ended in an embarrassing manner for the Magpies which kind of took the gloss off the point we managed to take away from Anfield in the early stages of last season.

Our record against Liverpool isn’t good. At home we’ve won three of the last four and generally we’ve had the upper hand at St James’ Park (P78, W31, D23, L24) but if you look at the overall record we tend to struggle. Out of 157 matches Liverpool have won 76 compared to only 43 victories for United with 38 draws roundign up the numbers.

Stats and facts…

Steven Gerrard is looking for his 100th Premier League goal.

Papiss Cisse has not scored a Premier League goal in over 1,000 minutes.

All of Newcastle’s league goals this season have been scored by French players.

Final thought…

I always hate playing Liverpool as they always seem to end up playing the best they have done for a while against us. We seem to bring out the best in them which is worrying when you look at how they’ve started the season.

In Daniel Sturridge they have a striker who will cause problems and partnered with Luis Suarez they have two strikers who are physical, full of energy and full of tricks which is exaclly the kind we seem to struggle against.

I’m not hopeful of a result or anything if truth be told, but what I do expect to see is more effort than we managed against them last season. Alan Pardew says that the team is in a completely different place psychologically this time around, which is fair enough, but they need to show it for a full 90 minutes to stand any chance of getting a result.

Howay the lads!

  1. Easy 3 points with SAS 😮 SUAREZ & STURRIDGE,Hopefully we rack up a cricket score 😛 Newcastle are always are WIPPING BOYS 😥

  2. fairplay Danno

hopefully we will do ya – however im not overly confident with your strikeforce against a coloccini less defence 😕

  3. Well if the game wasn’t a write off before colo got himself crocked by the Argentinians yet again it is now. See if Stevie and Mbiwa can form any sort of partnership this time around. I’d rather have Remy up top than Cisse and have Benny try and get at their defence, particularly Johnson, but I don’t expect him to start and expect goof opposite Remy.

I think Santon needs a really big game to keep Dummet out the side, he will not have Jonas or Colo to cover for him tomorrow and needs to prove he can defend without their help. Set Tiote lose on them like a fox amongst the chickens in the first 20 mins to try and get a hold of the game and impose ourselves on them. Liverpool like to start quick, if we can deny them that and see it to 0-0 at half time get Tiote (who will be on a yellow, hopefully not sent off) off for Anita and try and make something happen and grab a goal…Well that’s my Football Manager 14 analysis anyway 😉

“Newcastle are always are WIPPING BOYS”

    WIPPING!?

Must be a Scouse word 😛

  5. I’d have like to see how MYM dealt with Suarez. but I think it wont be.

My suggestion would be to experiment a little. Back 3 with Saylor & Willo man marking and MYM clearing up. 5-2-3 should be suicidal but hey who knows.

  6. Meant Whipping, but these bloody iPads are garbage 😥 Before you know it,it’s posted. Its only a laugh fellas 😉 As long as its entertaining as always,I’ll be happy with a high score draw 😛

      (Quote)

  7. Premand-I wouldn’t mind 3 CBs playing if it was the right match or we had Colo in there, but I just don’t think Willo should be in this match given the opposition. It’s unfortunate for him as while many blame the cardiff goal on him he’s been our best defender so far this season. Still really anxious about Tayls and Mbiwa though, could be a rout if they don’t get their heads in order.

      (Quote)

  8. Danno- **** Ipads eh, where did you steal yours from mate? 😉

A high score draw? Snap your hands off for that!

      (Quote)

  9. God ,I’m dreading it, the omens aren’t good . And another thing, I fecking hate these lunchtime kick offs . I’m gonna have to rush like hell tomorrow from the oldies to get back to see to Lews lunch before I can watch it 👿 . It better be worth it, that’s all I can say. They better put a shift in or I will be well cheesed off all day.

      (Quote)

  10. Prem@5 , Quite like the idea of 3 at the back, have often said I would like to see us try it but I’m pretty sure Pards hasn’t got the nads to try it mate. 🙄

      (Quote)

  11. so -5-5 it is then. 😆

    I wish.

While I agree that I think we’ll get spanked, let’s not forget that at home the last match was the exception and we’ve taken 9 of the 12 points. (so whipping boys maybe – but usually not the ones in the gimp mask) 🙂

      (Quote)

  12. Kim-we have played 3 at the back before, I remember a 4-0 mauling by Stoke and that put an end to that little system. Now we have a better CB and more attacking full backs it would be interesting to see, although we don’t have a quality DM anymore it seems 😕

      (Quote)

  13. We had some real quality set-to’s in the mid-nineties, DANNO. All of Europe talked about them.

It’d be nice to see something like that again, and let the goals come as they may 😉

      (Quote)

  14. I just hope wee henge-gob can resist cheating for 90 minutes. We have our own offenders but Suarez is down there with Ashley Young. destroys games for the fans, that ****.

      (Quote)

  15. I just want to see us go for the jugular, for once.

Too many times we put too much pressure on our defence by sitting back and hoping to absorb wave after wave of attack. The number of times I’ve seen a toon player look for a cross and see just one team mate (+/- 1) in the box is way too high.

I can take another 6-0 if they’re all wonder goals. But not another surrender, please!

      (Quote)

  16. Kim@10-you might be better off just having lunch with Lew and missing the match all together to be honest 😕

Whumpie-good point, we have definitely been better against them in more recent years. We should have won that 1-1 as well really, it was a careless pass and a hoof up field that led to them scoring their only decent chance up until Colo got himself sent off. Would love for some payback because they are getting well cocky about it all now but in all honesty i’ll take a bore draw.

      (Quote)

  17. Now now Whumpie – he did apologise.

Love it that they’re so full of confidence and nobody expects us to get anything other than a spanking.

    We’ll see. 2-1 for me!

      (Quote)

  18. Blip – well said. I know perceived wisdom is to sit back and absorb at times but we do it too much and very badly. Better to hold the line and shape and close down quicker than fall back and crowd up.

      (Quote)

  19. Newkie ,aye mate you could be right, why should I bust a gut when half the time the players don’t. Still I live in hope as always and it ain’t over til the big bird sings as they say . 😉

      (Quote)

  20. Hate to say it but Danno is right, we are usually whipping boys for Lpool. But that’s usually because Pards pays them too much respect in his team selection and approach to the game.
I want to see us compete and put as much effort into this one as we did at Cardiff, because they are absolutely beatable.

      (Quote)

  21. Sharpy – what are you basing this “whipping boys” thing on? Last season was the first time we’d not won the fixture since 2009!

I’m not saying we’re the better team but can we quit the inferiority complex?

      (Quote)

  22. Aye we’ve won 2 out of 3 at home under Pard’s at St James’…last season was a “whipping” like but surely we can’t be that bad again?
We looked decent 2nd half v Everton and played well v Cardiff so I’m hoping for something from the game, obviously Liverpool are favourites with the start they’ve had but what’s football without hope? 2-1 the Toon

      (Quote)

  23. Confusing mind games going on with Harry and the Remy thing. I read today he knows nothing about an agreed deal but on 5live the other night when referring to Remy being at Newcastle he said he’d been a snip for us at £8m. Remy says we’ll see. Pardew says it’s complicated. Rape always has been.

      (Quote)

  24. Kim-I have a disturbingly good memory of toon games over the last three years or so. I remember that game in particular because Super Sol was made to look a complete and utter fool. In the reverse fixture we lost 2-1 to a JAmes Perch last minute own goal I believe 😆 😥

      (Quote)

  25. We have to acknowledge the turnaround threw dippers have pulled off though – I think they’re looking good for a CL spot. Bloody good team and good style of play to.

    Dammit.

      (Quote)

  26. Well said Richie!! 2-1 tomorrow. Vividly remember the Chelsea 3-2 last season (only game i remember last season). Expected us to get smacked . . .

      (Quote)

  27. Whumpie-Aye, they are doing well and we have to admit it. Can’t blame them too much for being stuck up I guess as we gave them loads of stick re Carroll and especially after we finished ahead of them the year after.

Still, hope they hit a rough patch and find some **** humility again, my scouse mates are unbearable atm 😕

      (Quote)

  28. Kim-I remember the toon games on the Saturday better than the women the night before. What can I say, there just isn’t enough love to spare for a woman behind NUFC 😀

    Santii 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Hope an amazing win ❗
Or a good game from united…hope ben arfa on the bench …we lust defend he cant do this..and his not good enought for us i think…hope gouffran or obertan on there…
Come on pardew 541 with cisse alone upfront… 😎 ❗

      (Quote)

  30. Looking forward to the match. Danno sounds very confident. A high scoring draw would be brilliant. Santii you’ll never catch a good woman that way. 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Ben arfa must go with red for 20M… 😎 ..he s not good enoght for newcastle …we don t need him…obertan or goufran is better…sissoko too…great team… ❗
    Come on …5 -1 …toon toon. ❗ 😈

      (Quote)

  32. Is going for a draw meself, thank god that slow donkey collo aint playing this game, im still cringeing when i think of what a mug Suarez made him look like last season at there place, made collo look exactly what he is a joke of a defender

      (Quote)

  33. Aaaannnnd youuuu’re BACKINTHEROOM…

I think we’ll stick to 4-3-3, starting with the slightly more ‘uggy defensive’ version of our usual line up, like

    Debs – Mbia – Willo – Santon
    Sissoko – Anita – Cabaye
    Goofs – Cisse – Remy

And end up with something more like

    Debs – Mbia – Willo – Santon
    Sissoko – Cabaye – Marv
    Benny – Remy – Sammy

    Hey, it could work…

      (Quote)

  34. TOONARMYELITE – that’s actually a good point. The only time I remember Colo totally losing it was against these guys.

      (Quote)

  35. ❗ 😈 If DEFENCE IS GOOD STRONGLY ❗ 🙄
We going to win this fucking game ❗ or a draw but 3-3…up front cabs remy and my benny benny boy 😈 😈 😈 ❗ yeaaaaah ❗
    We can ****** them broken ***** vertebral body ❗ … 😈 😈 😈 ❗ ❗ ❗ ..hmmmmmmmm sorry… 😳

      (Quote)

  36. I’ve made my prediction and will stick to it. 4-1 to the reds with a defensive setup from Pardew against them. Gouffy to score for us. Remy neutralized by a clever manager. Hope I’m wrong mind.

      (Quote)

  37. <<<<, would like to see us go all out to win this game, would rather lose going for it than lose trying to defend meself 😐

      (Quote)

  38. We need a strong performance at both ends TAE mate. Otherwise they will tear us a new one. Attack and defend with discipline. Move as a unit on the field and most importantly every player to work his socks off for the cause.

      (Quote)

  39. well Pards is bigging us up saying it hurt last time so he sounds well prepared.. so im going for a 4-0 defeat 😛

      (Quote)

  40. TAE-We went all out (albeit only after half time) the last time round, and when we ended up losing 6-0 then many started saying Pardew made the wrong substitutions. Hopefully we will start with more attacking threat and we should try to play on the front foot, but as I said earlier Liverpool have been much better in the first half this season so we need to be careful.

      (Quote)

  41. @ GEORDIETWO
i think they expecting us to play defensive meself which if we do,i think we could be on the end of a major tonking, dont think they will be expect us to go for it could be a major shock to there system

      (Quote)

  42. It’s just if we get stretched too far TAE mate. Then they could kill us through their midfield. We don’t recover well at times when we push a few forward. What it comes down to is that I don’t think we can handle their ball movement. A player like Santon could really get caught out pushing too far up the field too often.

      (Quote)

  43. It’s a problem for Pardew to solve if he has the ability. Another big test for him in my view. Stopping their attack will take some doing.

      (Quote)

  44. I would argue that we can’t say Pardew is good enough for us if we get whacked in 3 of the next 4 games. If we perform well and pick up a few points that’s a different matter. Let’s see what happens mates.

      (Quote)

  45. I would argue that if we play good entertaining football in the next few weeks against Liverpool, the mackems, Chelsea and Spurs then it will show we are a decent club with the right manager. If we get whacked in 3 or all 4 of those games we will be back to arguing about what to do about it. But that stands to reason doesn’t it?

      (Quote)

  46. G2 ,I know it’s early days but these next few games will define Pards ability imo . He has to show he has learned from those two shockers last year and as much as the players should also take responsibility on the pitch it’s up to Pards to get the team spot on tactically and motivate them sufficiently enough before kick off.

      (Quote)

  47. Spot on Kimtoon lass @64. The next 4 games are a huge test for Pardew. I think any remaining support for him will disappear rapidly if we play poorly in those games. The time for excuses will be over completely.

      (Quote)

  48. Geordie anything above three defeats and a draw in the next 4 games should elevate Pards to Sainthood. But it won’t.

      (Quote)

  49. Aye Premand mate. What will your attitude be towards Pards if we get 1 point from the next 4 games? And what will Ashley and Joe think? It should be very interesting times ahead unless our lads raise themselves a tremendous amount.

      (Quote)

  50. Prem/G2 – what would you think is a realistic expectation from the next 4 games?.
I know we have Colo missing, but the rest of the squad is there. I think if there are no more injuries and we can get Colo back – 4-5 points should be possible with the squad of players Pardew has available to him.
    What do yous reckon?

      (Quote)

  51. That’s what I think as well Sharpy, 4 or 5 points. A win and 2 draws would be decent, or even a win and a draw but not 3 losses and a draw. Otherwise we’ll find ourselves back down in 16th place right quick.

      (Quote)

  52. Sharpy. I don’t expect to get anything from the top 6 home or away. I look at all 12 games a bonuses. Realistically I don’t expect to get nothing from the 12 games either but I’m not expecting anything from any specific game. A draw away in a derby game is OK by me. In any season you are going to get a run of games where you expect nothing. I hope to be pleasantly surprised but I’m not about to crucify a manager for not exceeding expectations.

Hopefully we will one of the games and maybe get 4 points, 6 is possible but who knows.

      (Quote)

  53. You’re a good stable influence on here Premand. I just wish we had a better owner then we wouldn’t be having nearly as many of these discussions about which are the must win games for us and why we don’t spend in the summer windows. Llambias used to say it was foolish to spend in January because players are overpriced then. I suppose that’s why he’s no longer with us.

      (Quote)

  54. Prem – I’m not suggesting crucification mate. But I’d be bitterly disappointed if we get absolutely nowt from the next 4 games.
I don’t think we have been great this season, but in the last 5 games we have scored 2 goals – something we didn’t manage all too often last season. If we can continue that and firm things up at the back then we should expect to get points we maybe wouldn’t have got last season.
I agree that there will be a run of 3-4 games were you look and think it ain’t gonna be a good month.
But I’d like to hope that the players and Pardew don’t approach those games with that mindset like.

Geordie – I certainly think 4 points are realistic, any more and I think we’ve have a good month TBH mate

      (Quote)

  55. I would hope we could get a draw tomorrow being at home and at least a draw from the Scum. I would settle for 4 points if I’m honest as it is a difficult little run, my fear is if we get nothing at all then by the time Norwich comes round heads will of dropped and we’ll be stuck in the pits.

      (Quote)

  56. To be honest, Collo has been totally owned by the beaver in the past so it’s not like we will lose because Coloccini isn’t there.
