It’s a knockout! Newcastle 0-2 Manchester City

City slickers
City slickers
Newcastle bowed out of the League Cup last night at the hands of Manchester City thanks to extra-time goals from Alvaro Negredo and Edin Dzeko.

It was a game of fine margins and it could be argued that United deserved the win in 90 minutes, but that extra bit of quality that Manchester City possess proved decisive and ensured that United’s interest in the competiton ended at the last 16 stage.

This is not to say that United didn’t have their chances. Shola Ameobi, Vurnon Anita, Yoan Gouffran and Papiss Cisse all wasted good chances with anoffside flag chalking off an effort from Shola in the first period, but it was always going to be a tough ask and despite giving it a go we just weren’t good enough despite matching City for large periods of the match.

Papiss Cisse twice wasted good chances for Newcastle in the first half as he lobbed the ball wide after Shola Ameobi flicked on Tim Krul’s kick before miscuing a shot from close-range. Shola Amoebi did find the net but, as mentioned earlier, was adjudged to have been offside before Vurnon Anita fired wide from the edge of the box. All Manchester City could really muster was a headed effort from Micah Richards which flew over the bar.

The second period wasn’t quite as industrious as the first but it was still United who should have drew first blood after Shola Ameobi cut inside and shot towards goal only to see his effort tipped wide by Costel Pantilimon who played in place of Joe Hart in goal from Manchester City.

For me though it was two substitutions which tipped the balance in favour of City. The introduction of David Silva gave the away some much needed creativity but on out part it was the introduction of Yohan Cabaye, or removal of Shola Ameobi whichever you prefer, that changed the game. With Shola, as much as he is maligned, we did have a presence up front and Papiss Cisse, despite his misfiring ways, was rarely left isolated but after Ameobi went off we found ourselves struggling in attack.

Extra time started and with came a glorious chance to take the lead after Hatem Ben Arfa lobbed a through ball to Papiss Cisse who timed his run perfectly and controlled the ball with his left foot before firing at the chest of Pantilimon. That miss proved costly as just a few minutes later Edin Dzeko waltzed down the left and squared the ball fro Alvaro Negrado to tap home.

At the end of the first period of extra time City put the game beyond doubt after David Silva and James Milner exchanged passes on the edge of the area with the former Magpie feeding the ball through to Edin Dzeko who rounded Tim Krul and had the easy task of slotting into the back of an unguarded net.

United were out, but they still came close to grabbing a consolation through Hatem Ben Arfa who saw his volley cleared off the line by Joleon Lescott.

Simply put we just weren’t good enough. We tried and created chances but were unable to finish them and that will cost you against the top teams who have the ability to punish you. City did just that. It’s all well and good having the best chances but you need to finish them to win games.

Howay the lads!

  1. Well let’s crunch some numbers. What can Ash look forward to in earnings from this season? Maybe 14M in commercial revenue, 20M from the gates, and more than 60M from TV. Also other sales of merchandise and free advertising, say 10M for the merchandise and 6M for the free advertising. That comes to about 110M pounds. Total expenses of perhaps 90M pounds (players wages, salaries, club costs etc). So a profit of at least 20 M pounds. Not too shabby for an owner with no football ambition.

  2. KK-I will redirect you to some of Sharpy’s stuff that I agree with. Ashley is nowhere fucking near “one of us” not at all-he might want success and in that alone we are united (I don’t buy into the idea he is spiteful for the sake of it-although I do think he originally had more ambition for the club but is now too much of a sour **** to revisit that ambition) but we are desperate for it and to him it’s just a bonus.

He might be more financially invested in the club (debateable because as he is fucking minted the amount he actually spends on NUFC in proportion to lifelong season ticket holders is a pittance) and nor is he emotionally invested at anywhere near the level most of us are. Otherwise he wouldn’t be such a *****. He’s not tightening the purse strings out of the good of his heart, he’s doing it so he doesn’t have to spend money (and a small benefit is that we won’t pay ridiculous fees/wages we have done-the major drawback is we buy fuckall, don’t invest and make no progress)

Similarly if we go into free fall, Ashley will think of it as a bit of a shitty investment, but he will walk away whistling into his billionaire mansion and live out happily while most of our lives could take a very depressing turn (sad? Over reactionary? I wouldn’t say so, we more than most as a City/Group lean on the goings on of our club in our day to day lives)

What would I like Ashley to do realistically is a hard question, because realistically I know he’ll hardly do any of it. Even a feasible and solid plan, whatever the plan, would be a fucking start. But we’ve had about 4 5 year blueprints change every other year, what’s the fucking point in expecting anything “realistically” when there clearly is no plan?

  3. Geordie – if you want to get down to the real hard nuggets then Ashley and Joe have received more than just insulting words. The pair have received death threats in the past mate. I don’t condone that sort of thing but that’s way different to newspaper reporting on a peaceful march against the regime like.

      (Quote)

  4. That’s not acceptable at all Sharpy mate. Peaceful protest is fine and a few well intentioned bits of advice on here but nothing more. Those are hard nuggets indeed. I think if people are unhappy with the way the club is run they have the right to peacefully protest and the press has the right to cover it. Ashley had better get used to that or move to somewhere more in line with his own attitudes. Surely Russia and Putin must be more appealing to him? He could even buy a club there.

      (Quote)

  5. G2@80 Cheers fella 😆

I agree with you, why doesn’t he buy himself a Soviet State and a football club, then he can run it exactly how he wants and if people do him wrong I’m sure he throw his toys out and can ask ambramovich for some help hiring hitmen or goons to shut papers/people up permanently, would suit Ash down to the ground I think.

      (Quote)

  6. Newkie – sorry if I stood on ya toes there buddy, but I think I but at the every suggestion that Ashley is one of us!.

Geordie – Russia would be a great place for Ashley to **** off to with his Sports Directski. He could take Joe with him to kick **** out of all the vodka

      (Quote)

  7. Sharpy-no worries mate-I agreed with all of them. All are good points, but I think the plan would be the first step. Tell the fans what your plans are (and ideally, make them at least half decent and not totally contradictory-which is what we deal with now) The first transfer in or out should be a real director, someone to get to grips with the finances but who also understands football. I don’t know or like many of those characters but we need someone with a grand plan to get all the pieces moving in the right direction, not sack here, sell there, scout here and not there. It needs to be connected.

Won’t happen though, we’re stuck with a right fruity ****** in joe as the right hand man of our glorious leader. It’s depressing to think about, which is why I always look for any positive I can find on the pitch 😕

      (Quote)

  8. Stu – I don’t even think that would work mate. Ticket holders have already paid up so Fat man and his pickled little friend would sit in the empty stand on match day laughing about it.

      (Quote)

  9. Nah Sharpy, he’d not be happy with the site of a half empty stadium being beamed round the world and his SD company being associated with it. Also I think there’s only 35k ST holders so he’d be still missing out on an awful lot of money. But also a lot pay monthly – just stop paying it amd **** him off!

      (Quote)

  10. Honestly given the choice of Gizzilionaire owner who just throws money at the club without giving a **** or Bill Kenwright type owner, I’d rather have Kenwright. Some who communicates well with fans and has the clubs best interests highest on the agenda.

      (Quote)

  11. It’s an excellent talking point Sharpy mate. Kenwright has done an amazing job and Ashley couldn’t even shine his boots when it comes to club loyalty and ambition. I haven’t noticed Kenwright banning the press recently either.

      (Quote)

  12. well i see jabba and owlheed are pals again (who gives a ****) but jabba has offered owlheed the same job he had at toon, but with Rangers this time, jabba will be in the huff again as hes told jabba its to far to go from his london home, maybe he should ask joe (please)

      (Quote)

  13. How does Jabba get to do that ice mate? Doesn’t he own 7% of the Rangers shares or something? Or is owlheed’s name just being put up as one possible candidate?

      (Quote)

  14. Stuart-would it be enough though? I don’t know I just don’t. What’s to stop him just culling high earners like Remy and Colo, that’s like 150k saved right there on match day revenue.

If Ashley has shown us anything its that he’s stubborn and won’t back down. We need a new buyer and I don’t really see how we can get another one. Send our ex players and try and promote us to the sultan of brunei like kim (i think) or someone else said on here before 😕

      (Quote)

  15. G2 never know how jabba does anything mate but he does, but he did offer him the post, maybe they are frightened to say owt he might take the huff and pull out then Rangers would be in it,they are hoping he invests more of coarse 😕

      (Quote)

  16. Actually I’m more interested in how we play against Norwich than Chelsea or Spurs. They are too far above us in terms of performances and ambition to be of concern. It’s how we do against bottom 10 sides that really matters, especially at home. I keep harkening back to the loss to Hull and the draw with West Ham.

      (Quote)

  17. G2 one thing i really want to do is to report on here that jabba has sold the club and you bet i have both ears to the ground, and others who still know a little bit of whats going on at the toon trouble is they are frightened to breath at the mo,but heres hoping pal 😉

      (Quote)

  18. G2@94 thats so true mate, you know the game 😉 thing is if we get a good smacking will the players still be up for games of teams around us or will they have given up the ghost by then, hope not like

      (Quote)

  19. still plenty of tickets for sale for the chelsea game why does that not surprise me 😆 i wont be a getting one thats for sure

      (Quote)

  20. Ice – the ridiculousness of it is that the club actually think the reason that they’re struggling to sell tickets is because people have no money, but it’s actually because people are just sick to death of this ambitiousless, hopeless and outrageously poor run club.

Let’s get these attendances down to 20,000 and then Jaba might realise he’s a ***** amd sell up before he oversees another relegation!

      (Quote)

  21. Ice – the second you hear the slightest rumour that would suggest Ashleys on his way out we need to hear it mate.
If not that then Pardew or Joe would do for now

      (Quote)

  22. Ice-keep your eyes peeled mate. You know any ITK’s in the heed? Do we have an Arab Businessman ready to expand the International Stadium to 100k and push for PL footie? 😀

      (Quote)

  23. Icedog I look forward to that day when jabba sales up.
I really hope palace get there man Pardew ?
I think Mr Blobby should be our next manager, please take not Kinnear

      (Quote)

  24. KK @ 59 To summarise all of your posts – I am a know all that likes to lord my opinion over everyone! 😉

      (Quote)

  25. Oz, there are few on here like that. I’m glad I’m one of the few who only have humble opinions. 😎

      (Quote)

  26. KK@60 Where to start Hmmm… Where did I say or even hint at the fact that I believed we nullified City and stopped them playing?
We did ok in the 90 minutes and City were below there best, I didn’t say any different, actually during the game you were probably more complimentary about the way we were playing than me.

My “2nd gear” comment wasn’t specifically aimed at the City game hence why I said “whenever our opposition play poorly it’s because they’re in 2nd gear”, it’s quite clear I was talking generally by the words “whenever” and “opposition”(instead of saying City) but yep they were in “2nd gear” but which gear were we in or are you saying that was us at our best and we can’t play better than that? 😉

Both teams played on Sunday??? Surely Citeh’s reserves didn’t 😯 😯

When we play poorly it is often down to Pard’s, I never said any different, my comment (again general) was that some say that it’s “purely” down to him sometimes(often) the players have to take some of the blame too which you agree with in your next sentence so either you agree with me or you’re contradicting yourself, which is it? 😛

and lastly you said “as predicted at halftime”… “Don’t be surprised if they up their game for 5 mins & score a goal or 2” wow you are a footballing genius, who else could have foreseen that one of the best and the most expensive team in the league could have done that? give yourself the huge pat on the back that you’re obviously looking for 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  27. Richie, don’t try and deny saying those things! You should know it’s not what you actually say, it’s how it is interpreted that counts 😆

      (Quote)

  28. Exactly Aussie 😆 , I predict, and don’t be surprised “if” Chelsea up their game for 5 minutes they may score a goal, if/when it happens you may call me “the great all-seeing one”

      (Quote)

  29. Actually KK got his prediction wrong if it was at half time, because it was only after full time that they got two goals 😉

Someone write a new article, i’m board of the moaning 😐

      (Quote)

  30. Against Chelsea I predict that whoever scores the most goals will win, otherwise it’ll be a draw.

      (Quote)

  31. Aussie 😆 it must be some “eatathon” he’s on as he’s hardly ever on here.

Newkie…Tbf if I remember correctly he made his prediction at half time but he didn’t say when during the game that they would step up their game 😉

      (Quote)

  32. Jez there is some fighting going on here,

Newkie I dont know what number post it was but you swore quite a bit in it, well I have to say I agree with most of what you say, which says to me that you dont talk as much ***** as some say you do.

      (Quote)

  33. Cheers Dave-yeah I think I got a little worked up on that one, I try to be a happy chap but our Glorious Leader sure makes it tough! And who the hell says I talk ****!? 😀

    **** off Richie 😆

      (Quote)

  34. Richie I know what you mean but I think the ( as much ) was very important 😆 but I really did enjoy that post as for me it showed a lot of passion from Newkie. It gets real annoying reading so much happy clappy stuff about what good Jabba has done for us. When its clear he has done a lot more bad.
We are always just around the corner from another fuk up under Jabba and Co

      (Quote)

  35. Richie – Sky Sports said on 78mins that Jovetic effort was City’s first on target. Even if you had said we nullified City, I think it would have been a pretty fair comment.
If we play well it’s always coz the opponents are playing 2nd gear or Liverpool (when I thought we were excellent) were ‘leggy’ according to the pundits.
As good as City’s ‘reserves’ (most of whom would walk into our starting 11) were, they still needed the likes of Silva to come on and help win the game.
You’re right mate, we play well and win and it’s down to the players. We play poorly and loose and it’s all down to AP. weird that one isn’t it?!

      (Quote)

  36. Dave 😆

Sharpy… Aye mate, I’m not a Pardew fan but he’ certainly not the only one to blame when we lose just as it shouldn’t only be the players who get the credit when we win.

      (Quote)

  37. Well **** the lot of you then 😆

Dave-I always have passion, I just don’t do much anti-Ashley ranting because it always gets discussed and if possible I’d prefer to talk about the footie itself. Although it is funny that the Ashley sycophants have quietened down lately. Where is wolfie these days? Is KK the only one about 😀 ?

      (Quote)

  38. Sharpy-I was so angry at the comments about Liverpools poor tired players, We had a bunch of frogs overseas and Tiote was half the world away and he absolutely ran that midfield, but naturally poor Gerrard was exhausted from his trip to landan.

      (Quote)

  39. Newkie – it was bollocks mate. A game played at SJP yet all BT Sports talk was about Lpool, which you’d expect if it was at Anfield. Then after the game the interviews were with Rodgers and Gerrard.
I thought at least Owen Hargreaves would have acknowledged Tiotes performance, having played in that position and toots being immense that day.

But to be fair, some of our own ‘fans’ don’t give credit for good performances, so why should the pundits?! 😆

      (Quote)

  40. Sharpy as I said we are always only around the corner from another fuk up under this regime.
Nothing surprises me about what the regime does, what does surprise me is how many fans still just accept what the regime does and get on with backing them without voicing concern on what tey are doing to our club.
IMO they are ripping the heart out of the club and they will continue to do that as Jabba the dictator knows he will get away with doing what ever he likes.
But I do think more will start opening their eyes and see what is happening 😥

      (Quote)

  41. Well my opinion for what it’s worth is, I think we will lose to Chelsea and Spuds and then we’ll face a real crunch match V hoots lads, that’s if he hasn’t been fired by then . 🙄 On the bright side for Jabba , he must be well pleased we have dispensed with one of those bothersome cups already.

      (Quote)

  42. Dave, It’s soul destroying knowing there is nowt to aim for but survival, it begs the question, what’s the point?, all fans want to know they have an equal chance of competing for a cup .The fact that the board have been quite clear that survival is the only true aim (something our manager wasn’t aware of until it was pointed out !) is shameful .

      (Quote)

  43. Richietoon@109 😉 …give it large mate.

If there is one thing I hate is blokes giving it the big “I told you so”, there are a couple of those sorts posting on here… Twisting words to suit there own agenda is my second pet hate… 😆

Here’s my new Toon slogan on the back of a Sham 69 song from the late 70’s … “If the Mags are United we will never be defeated” … I’m sure we sang that in the Gallowgate End one year 🙂

For the uninitiated heres a promotonal vid, with a guest appearance at 0:32 from a young Richietoon 🙂 Now go home and learn this one blogsters 🙂 Troy the old closet punkster will know this one for sure 😉 😉

  44. The fans forum thing is just incredible. Is Ashley just Putin in a fat suit?

I’ve stuck up for that twaat in the past when he seemed to be steering us into calmer waters with a clear view back to the CL. But something changed in the summer. His whole intention has switched and he’s behaving like a fucking despot of the worst order.

He wants to read some history books. .. 👿

      (Quote)

  45. I think this is a very good post match report.
The last paragraph sums it up perfectly:
“Simply put we just weren’t good enough. We tried and created chances but were unable to finish them and that will cost you against the top teams who have the ability to punish you. City did just that. It’s all well and good having the best chances but you need to finish them to win games.”
City gave us a chance, by not fielding their strongest 11, but if we don’t find some forwards and midfielders who can actually score, we will never compete.
The two city goals were well worked and well finished off.
We have had this problem infront of goal for too long now.
Once again, I find myself looking at the coaching staff, who clearly aren’t capable of sorting this out on the training ground.
    meh!
Bring on Chelsea, let the pain continue a while longer. 👿

      (Quote)

  46. I don’t want to harp on about Levy at Spurs again but surely Ashley as a business man can see he’s going the right way about things and should employ someone in a similar vein
JFK seems to have become the clubs scout – I wasn’t aware that was in a job spec for DoF !
    Couple of things
Charge SD for advertising or at least knock the equivalent off fattys loan each season
Find another shirt sponsor for non league games
Stop banning fan forums and local media
Find a better manager and pay him the going rate
Get rid of JFK or make him an actual scout
Hire a good DoF (obviously this will cost more than the two bob you’re giving JFK)

      (Quote)

  47. clearly I don’t know what is happening on the training ground, as we aren’t allowed to see anymore.
But I do know that winning a match is generally as a result of the hard work and graft being put into the training.
Our lot seem more interested in the social side of training (ie a nice meal, darts and table tennis etc) than getting stuck in to sorting out the mess we put out on match day.
I never liked David Beckham, but I give him credit for how he trained, and the hours of practise he put into getting his free kicks right. Our lot could learn a thing or two.

      (Quote)

  48. Sharpy@129-You’re not wrong there fella, have you heard we never play well and haven’t for over three years? 😉

      (Quote)

  49. Lose to Chelsea, Spurs then struggle against Norwich and the fans will finally turn on Pardew. Hopefully it won’t be long after that 😛

See Pards is saying he’ll stick by Cisse. Compares him to Torres. That’s alright then, he might score a goal or two next season.

      (Quote)

  50. So the club are now banning supporters groups because they ask to many difficult questions. You couldn’t make it up!

    Where will this end?

    Supporters Stay away!!!

      (Quote)

  51. Stuart – the supporters should stay away themselves.
Perhaps its time to start up a new breakaway club 😕

      (Quote)

  52. I can also see the ‘Get out of our club’ song being revived soon
The fat bastad really didn’t like that did he ❓

      (Quote)

  53. Kim – the details are in the link I posted about 15 posts up or so. Apparently they were asking too many questions!!.

SteveP – Levy has been outstanding for Spurs, but Dave is right. To operate anything like Spurs we’d have to get rid of Ashley – and be prepared to loose some of our best players and hope that money was reinvested well. It would be a difficult success to emulate to be honest.

Kim describes Ashley as a dictator and that’s exactly as I see him. George Caulkin even wrote about how he was asked not to run a story because Mr Ashley wouldn’t like it. Then he bans press and fans forums. Appoints JFK without any consultation with Pardew or Carr to make sure he gets the best possible person for the job. The bloke does what he wants when he wants!. His main ambition is to make the club self sifficent, which would absolve him of any financial responsibility – then what?.
I understand that he bought the club, so he’s the owner – but we buy into it and our commitment is for live. We may not put as much money in but a lifetime of blood, sweat and tears.

      (Quote)

  54. BB – there’s not much of a club left to get out of! Maybe Ashley will just move it to Dublin or somewhere.
