Game On! Tottenham v Newcastle

Game On at the Lane
Game On at the Lane
Good morning all! It’s an early trip down the lane this morning as United visit Tottenham Hotspur for this televised encounter.

A high-noon kick-off is probably not what Tottenham would want after participating in the Europa league on Thursday evening, but to be fair they have depth within the squad so should be able to cope better than we managed to last term.

In fact a quick look at the Premier League table will show that indeed they are coping better with the rigours of a Europa League campaign. A win will take them into third place in the Premier League table which is no mean feat, yet for whatever reason the natives at White Hart Lane aren’t overly happy and have been critical of their own team at times this season. Would they like to swap places?

Whilst Newcastle can’t quite hit the heady heights of third place with a win, there is indeed progression to be made. A victory for Alan Pardew’s men will propel us to ninth in the table and a win combined with a shift in goal difference depending on our result and that of Manchester United against Arsenal could see us end the afternoon ahead of the Red Devils in eighth place. However, feet on the ground and all that.

A positive result for me would be a draw. Tottenham have been in fine form and have been grinding out results in a rather mechanical yet effective fashion. Defence has been their strong point but I do fancy us to get a goal. We’ve scored in every league game apart from the opening two fixtures so we do present a threat. In theory anyway…

Team news will be published below as and when it becomes available and keep an eye out for any links to any internet stream that are posted in the ‘comments’ section below if you’re struggling to find a way to watch the game. 1. I’m sorry but FFS, what the hell does Shola bring to the team? He was completely and utterly static last against Chelsea and it was striking how much more fluent and threatening we looked once he went off. Where are we going as a club if he is starting games.

Also not happy to see Dembele, Eriksson and Sigurdsson playing as they have real attacking intent which they haven’t had recently.

    2-0 unfortunately

  2. Well they say never change a winning team and Pards has stuck by that this time .Brave move and one to be applauded t tells the whole squad work for your place and once in the team and you perform well you stay in . I predicted a 2-0 defeat for us today though , hope i am wrong again because last week i thought we would get hammered 😉

  3. Sad not see Anita get the start but not surprised. Would take a draw tbh, really don’t expect the win . Try to watch and cook sunday lunch at same time 👿 can’t wait for a normal KO match.

  4. The formula worked before and it makes sense now. A game plan is for 90+ minutes, not just the start – and I think Pards has earned the right to stick to his guns.

I’m also going to stick up for Shola here. He’s the best holder-up of the ball we’ve got, and has amassed a good range of tricks designed to avoid the need to move about. 😆 I’ve been wanting to see what he can do as a target man to lay back to Remy and Goofs. It could work – but of course he’ll come off at some point to be replaced with someone very quick.

Talking of which – attacking bench or what??

Sky Sports 1…pity we’ll have to listen to scousers blathering about the game though 😉

  6. TLR you said it mate 🙄 🙄 🙄

Brave move by Pardew to be honest, it could all blow up in his face though…especially with our central defensive partnership, but they have to show there mettle today…

  9. Decent set up by Pardew again. We’re hard to break down. Again credit to him he deserves it. Since the Liverpool game we have been mentally, physically and tactically prepared.

  10. @mark – from the previous thread

Self centred might be the wrong choice of words for remy but the fact he chose qpr over us because of money – i just don’t think weger would like that type of player.

  11. Another very disciplined first half but Spurs have worked Krul alot harder than Chelsea did last week – I know they are the home team but still, I’d be amazed if they don’t score today.
Keep the discipline though and use his subs wisely and why not?!

45 mins away from another 3 points from a top 6 club.

  12. Pardew has done well to get the team playing together. As soon as Spurs are in the final third there are 2 or 3 newcastle players around them.

I don’t think pardew is just worried about townsend, he’s set the team up better than that & got the whole team pressing at the same time when the ball is in our half.

  13. Thank god first half ended… the bright sun is killing krul eyes….

Phews, hopefully spurs gk will find it equally distracting in 2nd half. 😳 😆 😆

  14. Hope Pardew brings on Arfa for Shola at some point. Not fussed if Cisse stays on the bench as he gives the ball away to much

  15. KK…Agree he’s obviously not just worried about Townsend but he definitely made plans to counter him and it’s worked….so far.

  16. 2 problems though.

    1) we are too deep. We should be higher up the pitch & we should be pressing them as soon as we lose the ball. Spurs have been quite easily able to pass the ball across their back line.

On another day spurs might be 2-1 or 3-1 up. We’re relying too much on Krul’s brilliant saves.

    2) Sissoko – i know pardew is playing sissoko so that we have 2 banks of 4 & there is cover for debuchy but sissoko is not a winger. He’s wasted there. Worse – anita is wasted on the bench!

Pardew should know that it is possible to play 3 or even 4 centre mids & still provide cover for the fullbacks.

I haven’t seen anything interesting from sissoko today. I have seen a stat that anita created the most goalscoring chances last season.

Other than these 2 points – this is the best performance in tersms of creting chances. No wonder goals, no rebound shots.

Excellent play in getting the ball behind spurs

  17. Santon is really poor at times. The bloke just seems to suffer from brain-farts at inopportune times 👿 👿

    Poor challenge Debuchy 🙄

  18. @richietoon

You’re right – pards has warned the team about townsend & he’s been righ to do so. Townsend can quite comfortably beat 1, sometimes 2 but 3 is just too difficult. Santon, Gouffran & Cabaye doing well

Anybody notice Cabaye coming across like a man on a mission. So so focused, agressive but not his usual paul scholes type reckless. He’s really trying to prove something.

    Good play from Ameobi too.

  19. *** hopefully is soldado and not defoe upfront.
Soldado is so overrated. 30 millions for him is a fucking joke

      (Quote)

  20. Time to get Ameobi off. He’s been a statue all game and we need mobility now. Him off, Anita on and pack midfield.

  21. I can imagine what Vila Boas said to Spurs at half time, but what has Pardew said to our lot ? We are poncing around here at the beginning of the first half. FFS 👿 👿 👿
