Game On! Manchester United v Newcastle United

Game On at Old Trafford
Game On at Old Trafford
Good morning one and all. Its an early start today as two United’s clash at Old Trafford. Those two being Manchester and Newcastle United.

Oncs upon a time those two United’s used to be rivals and went toe-to-toe for the Premier League crown.

We fluffed it whilst the Red Devils didn’t and the rest is, as they say, history. Manchester United went from strength to strength whilst we fell away, but there will always be a part of me that is left wondering “what if”. What if we did hold out? Where would we be now? Would we have been able to take a seat near the top of the Premier League table for a more sustained period?

I guess it doesn’t really matter now. That was many years ago now but today is all that matters. As detailed in my match preview, Manchester United have been shaky so far this term but they do have a habit of performing against us.

They are without Wayne Rooney, who again has a habit of performing against us, but they still have dangerous players. Check out the full team news below.

The match itself is being broadcast here in the UK via BT Sport and is also being shown worldwide so picking up a stream should be fairly easy. If you do find a good stream then by all means feel free to leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

On paper there has never been a better time to play at Old Trafford but I’m still not expecting anything. A better performance than what we saw at Swansea would be a start though.

Howay the lads!

Newcastle United: Tim Krul; Mathieu Debuchy, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini, Davide Santon; Yohan Cabaye, Cheik Tiote, Vurnon Anita; Moussa Sissoko, Loic Remy, Yoan Gouffran

  1. Axel , Real fans stay and support till the bitter end. Trouble with Man Utd fans is they have had it all their own way for years and have gotten spoilt by it. I will say one thing for Liverpool fans, even though the glory years are long gone they still support their team well.

  2. Can you imagine Man u fans coping with the barren spell we been going through, jesus there would only be a few dozen fans left going by todays poor show over a 0.1 result.

      (Quote)

  3. KIMTOON can you imagine it if they lost the next 2 games and get sucked into the bottom half of the table ,judging by the reaction of some today i think their would be mass suicides taking place . They really cant handle it .

  4. @KIMTOON

I can’t imagine many (if any) clubs that would still get 50,000 fans turning up every week despite not winning anything for a couple of generations!

Especially when the cup competitions aren’t a priority, we dread ending up in a European place & the aim for the season is a comfortable top 10 finish!

  5. Axel – the plastic mancs and glory hunters would soon be pulling on citeh shirts.
The hardcore of 30k would just rattle around in that big empty stadium.
    Great thought 😛

  6. Ok, i’ve done a comprehensive analysis of the Premier League table & the statistics show the following:

Man City, Arsenal, Liverpool & Chelsea will finish in the top 4. They are all still in the title race but Man City are the clear favourites.

    Everton will finish 5.

6th & 7th will be between Southampton & Man Utd. Man Utd will most likely get 6th unless Southampton strengthen their squad.

8th, 9th, 10th & 11th is between Swansea, Villa, Spurs & Newcastle. Newcastle have the best chance of finishing 8th unless Swansea & Spurs get knocked out of Europe.

Spurs & Newcastle have picked up unusually more points than their average performances deserve so far this season. Either team could struggle for a top 10 place or alternatively challenge for a top 4 place.

  7. great win,you can see there is something not right with man/utd players, there was a real bad foul on Anita by nani full stud into his shin should have been sent off imo,we wanted the game more and it showed

      (Quote)

  8. In all honesty as much as im not a fan of him as a person. This season shows just how good Ferguson was, To win the league last season by a dozen points with such an average team containing imho only three genuine top quality outfield players (Rooney, Van Persie and Vidic) is some feat.

That said he fecked up royally with Morrison and Pogba who would waltz into their powder puff midfield now, Daft old ****… 😈

      (Quote)

  9. Man U players think they can just turn up and win, because they are Man United.

There culture went with Fergie. The fight, the fear, the influence on refs, the last minute goals and never say die attitude.

Fergie raised a golden generation and worked off it. Giggs and Scholes were the last of them.

Giggs is now 40! They are now simply contenders. Their brand still exists but will fade as they lose supporters to the likes of Chelsea and Man City.

Failure to make CL and they need a rich billionaire buyer to be the next suger daddy club… Unfortunately I thonk they’ll get one.

      (Quote)

  10. They have lost the fear factor no doubt its been clear as day all season, West Brom, Everton and ourselves breaking (very) long winless streaks at the theatre of prawn sandwiches. Stoke should have done the same and their performance at man city was so pityful it made ours look creditable.

Im quite enjoying it after the sleepless nights i had during and since 95/96…

      (Quote)

  11. Ferguson was a good manager & had a good backroom but he wasn’t a great manager.

Yes he achieved great things but by the end of his career, was he as good as the best? Nope.

A bigger achievement is what Arsene Wenger has done at Arsenal. Without him they would quite probably be worse than us. Spurs wouldn’t be so strong without the sale of Bale & Modric.

      (Quote)

  12. Last year there wasn’t a title race.

Benitiez came in half way through & did well but ran out of time

Mancini caused Man City to implode

Arsenal lost their best player to Man Utd. The same player won Man Utd the title.

Moyes has a very tough job rebuilding utd. It’s not as though Ferguson left a young, improving squad.

      (Quote)

  13. I will feel sorry for Man Utd fans but not just yet.

Change is good & it’s about time they missed out on Champions League football.

They spent big when no one else really could. Stole all of the young talent from the rest of the league.

Now you have Chelsea who could blow Man Utd out of the water. Fanatstic young players. So good they don’t need Lukaku there!

Man City are in a different league to Chelsea. The owner & his family have so much money they honestly don’t know where to spend it. It’s Brewster’s Millions x a million. Seriously, a million x a million!

When Wenger leaves Arsenal, they will be the richest club in the world. Richer than Real Madrif & Barcelona.

A few seasons without Champions League for Man Utd will bankrupt them.

      (Quote)

  14. Alex Ferguson was a great manager!. I am no fan of him as a man but he has been the best manager for the last probably 20 yrs.
Man Utds trophy room backs that up, there just is no arguing with – its a fact.

      (Quote)

  15. @sharpy17

Chelsea have won more trophies than Arsenal in the last 5-10 years. They’ve had a lot of managers, who have won more with Chelsea than Arsene Wenger has with Arsenal.

Are they all better than Wenger? No. Otherwise you’d have to say Roberto Di Matteo is one of the best.

The club with the most trophies is usually the one with the most money.

Before Chelsea, there wasn’t any other club that could consistently pay wages & transfer fees at the same level as Man Utd. Ferguson did well generally but his european record shows that he couldn’t compete with the real ‘big boys’.

Even the 1999 Champions League victory was undeserved & a fluke.

      (Quote)

  16. Vurnon Anita :- “We knew that it had been 41 years since we last won here.” “We were told it a few days ago by the manager.” ”It’s a historical win and we did it with good, beautiful football.”

“We pressed the ball and kept it well when we won it back.” “We needed a win, of course. We lost on Wednesday at Swansea so felt we had something to straighten out, and we did it well.”

“It was great to be back in,” “You always want to play, and if you aren’t playing then you have to work hard in training so the manager knows you are ready.”

“I was pleased to start, I enjoyed it, I think I did well and we won, so everything is good.”

      (Quote)

  17. By the way, i don’t dislike Ferguson but to be a great manager, you have to beat the odds & overachieve.

Ferguson just did his job to a good standard. Nothing great.

      (Quote)

  18. KK – Alex Ferguson has been the greatest manager of certainly my generation and for the last 20yrs. There is absolutely nothing you could say to convince me otherwise.

KK – I liked our midfield with Cab, Toots and Ani, but I thought we looked a little weak up front with it to be honest. It really done the job today and its a great option to have, but it may mean that we’d have to drop Sissoko to keep Shola up there for me and I think Sissoko is doing well at the moment.

      (Quote)

  19. I don’t know if we need the same team again as today, maybe he just has to pick a formation and players best suited to overcoming the opposition , what ever formation that may be.

      (Quote)

  20. KK

You are deluded mate Ferguson built united to what they are today. Won the champions league with Aberdeen (Yes Aberdeen hardly expected)

He is the greatest manager of all time… If not the best then at least the top 3.

You are either a complete dimwit or a wum

      (Quote)

  21. Finally back after many computer problems. A wonderful match today. No more complaints about Pardew from me. And Williamson has become a tremendous defender for us. Who would have guessed it (not me, obviously 😆 ). Hats off to the entire club.

      (Quote)

  22. The competition for the Champions League places is wide open this season. I still wonder if Arsenal can maintain this pace. Chelsea are on again off again, Man U look very average, and Liverpool depend so much on Suarez. Man City are sometimes iffy as well. No predictions from me. The league is much more competitive now.

      (Quote)

  23. If Williamson keeps this type of form up would he deserve an England cap

Can you believe i just asked that 😆 Imagine i had asked that 5 months ago 😛

      (Quote)

  24. Mike Williamson – clean sheets against Man Utd, Chelsea and Tottenham with differing centre back partners throughout.

    He is not Premiership quality…….

      (Quote)

  25. @G2

I will go for 1st Chelsea 2nd Arsenal 3rd City 4th Newcastle 😆 (just kidding) 4th will probably be Liverpool

  26. You either hear of Everton challenging for Europe or Southampton’s great start – but we were nearly relegated last year and are prime in between both.

    Where is our media coverage?

      (Quote)

  27. FJ I was thinking that myself you would think Southampton had already won the league the way the media have been covering them.

I like it this way tbh we are better when people underestimate us or dont expect us to turn up.

      (Quote)

  28. FJ – we don’t really want any.
Just happy bobbing along under the radar for now.

      (Quote)

  29. I like the unknown factor too – but when you see Southampton getting praise for doing no more than we have done, it is annoying.

We could get Europe next season and we wouldn’t have achieved it, other teams would have lost it. Pisses me off.

  30. I have a tenner bet on with a Mackem I work with. 2 tiered bet – firstly who we think will win the league – I have Arsenal and he took Chelsea. If neither win then its obviously who finishes highest of the 2 teams.
The 2nd part is obviously who finishes higher between us and them.

I’m looking quids in at the moment 😛

      (Quote)

  31. If arsenal can beat everton tomorrow, then surely they will be bang on favs to win it

      (Quote)

  32. I don’t think he’s getting enough credit so I will say it.

Davide Santon was WORLD CLASS today. Best I have ever seen him play both with and without the ball. I have re-watched the match and he is MOTM imo.

I don’t remember him giving the ball away more than once in the whole game.

      (Quote)

  33. BB

They already are favourites with quite a few bookies now. They are the only consistent team with quality players still yet to return.

      (Quote)

  34. Its great when there is 4/5 contenders for man of the match shows what a good team performance we had.

Gouffran had another poor game. Does he need a rest or should he be dropped for Ben Arfa. Just to show that bad performance’s must have consequences just like good ones bring reward and i think Ben Arfa had a good game when he came on

      (Quote)

  35. Did anyone notice Pardew and Zaha shaking hands right before he came on as a sub? I don’t think i have seen that happen very often.

Makes me think there might be something in the rumor of a pre arranged loan deal for him in January.

      (Quote)

  36. It is irritating how the press kiss up to Southampton considering how reluctant they were to credit us two years ago. Despite us showing far more consistancy and ultimately staying the distance (Which they wont)

Im afraid Pards cockiness and cockneyness mean the media wont credit him, Martinez and Pochettinos fruity accents and pretty patterns make them media darlings.

Bruce and Jewell had wigan in the top half, Martinez gets them relegated and walks into a bigger job than either will ever get its laughable… 🙄

      (Quote)

  37. The Kid – I mentioned Santon last week mate. I think he’s tremendous at the moment and so overlooked with everyone talking about Debuchy and Willo. I’m pleased some else has picked up on it as well 😉
But today, it was between Tiote or Sissoko for me.

  38. @santii

Ferguson was a great manager at aberdeen. He did incredible things with his class of 92. What else did he do?

Win trophies on a budget? Nope. Perhaps he dominated europe? Nope. Sowhat did the man managing the richest club in english football actually do?

He spent most of his time fighting for the league against a budget manager in wenger. Sometimes he won, sometimes wenger won. No real competition to match man utd’ money.

Roy Keane, Andy cole, Jaap Stam, Dwight Yorkie, Van Nistelrooy, Veron, Ferdinand, Berbatov, Rooney, RVP…There’s still too many to name. Most of these transfers were for £20m+ in the pre abramovich era.

There is no way you could say ferguson did great things at utd. It’s like saying bayern munich managers have been great because they’ve dominated the bundesliga by buying the league.

Ferguson was a good manager. He was great at aberdeen. He did well with his class of 92. He’s done ok since.

If you’re the only rich club in the league, winning the league is the minimum.

      (Quote)

  39. Wow i didn’t realise there were so many ferguson fan boys on here!

I guess short memories really does mean history is written by the victors.

  40. Next we’ll be hearing how great mancini was for winning the league with man city for the first time in a million years.

If rvp ended up at city, would utd still have won the league?

      (Quote)

  41. It took me a long time to finally get to see the game, but WOW. I can’t believe I was -1 month old when they last won at Old Trafford, I had no idea it had been that long.

That was a fun game to watch. 5 wins in the last 6 (is that right?), that’s not too shabby. Pity we have to wait a week until the next game, but given the midweek disaster, probably better to have a week in between games…

      (Quote)

  42. KK,

You talk a lot of **** on here. But your nonsense has gone to a new level if you don’t think Ferguson was a great manager.

He built Man United back up to become the biggest club in the world.

He comfortably won the league with this same Man U squad and won the Champions League with two completely different generations.

His teams had incredible belief right to the end and players all had the utmost respect for him.

  43. 41 years ago… dream dream dream …

I had just turned 18 and was living in a shoebox in France while shovelling **** on a farm 2 days a week, and I had recently joined the local football team.

Life had already taken a few unexpected turns, but little did I know that I was on the cusp of the biggest change in my life – in 5 month’s time I’d fall head over heels in love with the most wonderful woman I have ever met. And following her around in my starry-eyed state led me to spiritual, intellectual and emotional awareness, and eventually to ‘stralia.

Let’s hope this is the start of something equally transforming for NUFC.

  46. Love how Pardew said the slip up at Swansea was disappointing and he must take some blame for it and maybe he should have freshened it up or changed the game plan. ‘But we got it right today.’ 🙂 I’m starting to like this guy, I think he’s better than we sometimes give credit for and he has a positive influence on the players.

      (Quote)

    It’s funny how attitudes change.

I liked the interview before the game. Where he clearly stated the game plan of keeping the ball.

His starting line up, formation and substitutions were spot on. Exactly what I wanted for this game.

The first 20 minutes I think the players didn’t quite listen but even despite this he has set us up solidly enough to cover the odd individual errors.

Eventually confidence grew and we outplayed them.

I also loved how the nobs at BBC thought he got the formation wrong. Just shows how little they know. Knobs.

Ok, Man United weren’t at their best. And we had some fortune. But how many times over the years has that factor gone against us.

      (Quote)

  48. Finally, Pardew is the same tatical realm as JJ! It has taken Pardew years to learn the skills that JJ has picked up in front of the tele!

  49. KK – you’re the kind of fan that got Sir Bobby Robson sacked. 😯
The biggest mistake this club ever made.

      (Quote)

  50. Still on a high after that win, hats off to Pards he got it spot on. The guy drives me mental sometimes with the stuff he comes out with but on and off the pitch yesterday he was spot on. Good tactics and good substitutions too, and a nice shot of humility in the post match interview. I was 11 years old last time we won there !, after a ***** week for Lewis and I it’s a lovely end to it. MERRY CHRISTMAS ,our pressie from Santa just came early 😀

“There is no way you could say ferguson did great things at utd”

you must be joking tho mate? LOL thats a ridiculous comment mate, he did absolutely amazing things. look at the same team that won the title last year, now floundering without Fergy.

      (Quote)

  53. Even just one more win and a haul of 6 points out of this month would be a good return considering the teams we face. So glad Anita got brought in yesterday, I had wanted that and it paid off, thought Debbie ,Tiote and Cabs all did well, Santon looked good too and Krul looked less shaky than last couple of games ,less flappy. My only moan is that I would ask why do we only seem to raise our standards for the big guns 😕 , We need that commitment from the players in every single game.

      (Quote)

  54. A few pearls of wisdom (bullshit more like ❗ ) from Moyes:-

“I think the game against Everton was very similar to the one against Newcastle,” he explained. “If we had come out on top in both games I don’t think anybody would have said an awful lot about it.

“Because we have not, and because we are Manchester United, we have to do better.

“We have to play better, pass it better, make more chances and take more opportunities.

“But we have just not been able to do that in the last couple of games.

“We were needing something to go for us, to give us a bit of confidence.

“Their goal was a little bit fortunate. Patrice Evra hits the ball against the back of Moussa Sissoko’s head and he goes through to cut it back.”

Welcome to the real world manure.
A world where not everything goes your way, no dodgy penalty decisions, off-sides are given for a change, no more fergy time, and no lucky breaks or rub of the green.
Where it is 11 v 11 and more often than not, you’re as **** as the rest of us.
Welcome to mediocrity, with your average players and bog standard manager.
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha
    I’m loving it. 😆 😆

  56. I think Moyes is losing it at Man U picking a midfield force of Phil Jones &Tom Cleverley. Tbh I don’t think these two would improve Sunderland or Cardiff.

Cleverleys had a nightmare 2 games and looks short of quality esp at Man U and Jones doesnt cut if for me at the back never mind midfield.

    tough days indeed 😎

  60. Groucho ,I’m inclined to agree@370, He’s a cunning old fox is Fergie, seems to me that with the cash available to Citeh ,Chelsea and the likes of Arsenal always there abouts and Liverpool under Rogers, he could see the era of Man Utd dominance on the wane. Just as it happened to Liverpool it will happen to Man Utd, you can’t be top dogs for ever, it has to end at some point whether through a richer club coming along to out spend you or you just don’t have the calibre of players/managers as previously. They still have Rooney and RVP, for now but what of the future, will top players gravitate towards them or the cash rich Citehs, Chelseas or whom ever wins the league this season, perhaps Arsenal will benefit from their slump who knows. One things for sure they really should of strengthened in the summer as they don’t look to have much depth at all.
