Game On! Newcastle v Southampton

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
A good day to you all, and welcome to this ‘Game On’ feature which will build up to and take us through the match with Southampton this afternoon.

Last weekend was momentous for us. We managed to beat Manchester United on their own patch for the first time in 41 years which should assure a decent welcome home for the lads today.

However whilst we were upsetting the red half of Manchester, Southampton set about frustrating the blue half by holding City to a draw at St Mary’s – ending a run of three straight defeats in the process. That sounds as though Southampton haven’t been performing this season – they have, and under Mauricio Pochettino the hard-working Saints will provide a tough test for Alan Pardew against his former employers this afternoon.

My good friend Marktoon has carefully crafted a match preview for you all to have a flick through if you’ve not done so already. You can view it here and it features news of injuries and suspension for both clubs, a look at previous meetings between the two sides along with some stats and facts thrown in for good measure.

The match itself will not be broadcast live here in the UK although it is due to be shown on some overseas channels so keep your eyes out for any decent streams as those who aren’t lucky enough to be going to the match are going to want to watch. If you do find a good stream then please share it with your fellow NUFC fans and leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

Team news will be added in below on full as soon as I can possibly get to it. However if you’re to eager and can’t wait it usually appears in the comments below courtesy of some of our hawk-eyed regulars who are on it like Sonic! Either way it should be out just after 2pm.

That is just about it. This is an interesting game involving two sides who are probably overachieving at the minute if you take into account pre-season expectations so I guess we’ll all have to watch and find out which way it goes.

Howay the lads!

  1. Kim-same goes for our players, it’s no surprise that as a nation we are lagging behind both player and coach wise because we are essentially too lazy to go abroad and find work.

  2. Newkie, Odd though isn’t it, I mean the old school guys did it years back , Tosack , Sir Bob , Terry Venables, more recently Hodgson and Mcclaren and of course Bryan Robson and Peter reid both managed Thailand for a bit but it amounts to a whole heap of nothing on the numbers front and there aren’t any young or ex players managing abroad that I can think of. Is it that there is so much money in the PL or a lack of ambition and not wanting to be found out as inferior perhaps, I include players in that last bit too. Fair play to Bale for going to spain , he will doubtless improve over there.

  3. Kim-for players and managers money is the big motivator. It’s also so easy for foreign ex player who’ve played here to manage here, people know them and they know the language/culture/players. Bobby went abroad because his class was recognised around the world. Mclaren I would say went abroad because his reputation in the uk was in tatters. Hodgson at least has an interesting background abroad altho has little to show for it.

I would say it’s a mix of money and the lack of british/english people to learn and adapt into different cultures. It’s not just in football that we see it.

  4. I think it’s because they fear falling off the end of the world if they venture too far from the UK.

Or maybe they think that they’d have to start from square 1 “Gather round, you foreign types, this is what is known as a ball. You kick it …”

  5. Newkie, I think that’s true, it’s odd though and at the same time typically English 😉 .

So Manure play Scum then, that should be interesting, but reckon Manure will win, even though they been poor by their standards, the prospect of facing Citeh in the final will be all too tempting to pass up.

  8. GEORGIO, the last winger i can remember from m/utd that came to the toon was J Fell he was just ok,maybe you will not go back that far mate 😀

  9. Gillespie was alright, despite being a total gobshite 😛

We need a winger who can mix up the crosses, they don’t even have to be inch perfect, just so long as they beat the bloody full back or whoever is covering. Cisse is probably just as good at dealing with a low/inaccurate cross that he can attack with any part of his anatomy as he is at scoring when it’s put on a plate.

Crosses or cutbacks for him I think. He’s been unfortunate with disallowed goals a lot but I really don’t think through balls suit him that much given his lack of control and composure.

  10. I wont stand for that Newkie Gillespie was amazing. I will refer you to Tino’s Barca Hattrick for proof 😛

  12. Ice,
I saw Jimmy fell score twice in the last 3 minutes to beat Cardiff 2-1 at SJP too many years ago. I was stood in the popular stand and a lot of our fans had left the ground before we scored.
I only just caught a bus home and no one on the bus believed me when I said we had won .
I still think ‘Jinky ‘ Jimmy Smith was our best crosser of a ball.

  13. ice – you sure Fell was from the mancs? There was a whole succession of them. Fell, Luke, Touhy, Scanlon (he was a munich survivor) Mitten even. When they decided none of them were good enough went back to Bobby dazzler 😳

  15. Just thought I’d share this with you.

The other day I was sent a manuscript to for feedback (something I get paid for every now and then). It’s an architecture book. I came across a few pages that describes some of the buildings in Newcastle and the revitalisation of the Quay, and the Sage. It says: ‘ … (the people) … are fiercely independent and insist on being called Novocastrians rather than English …’ 😆 I made the appropriate comment: ‘Yi divvint caal thim Novo-whatevers, yi naa; tha caald Geordies, man. Geordies.’

The people in Newcastle in Australia usually get called Novocastrians. And we play them at home tonight. So they can’t doctor the pitch like they did last time and do rain dances and get the gods to give them a helping hand. Instead we’ve doctored the pitch ourselves by having a Bon Jovi concert 3 days ago. 🙄

    Caarn the Roar.

  16. I see Vincent Tan has been reading “How to **** up your football club” by Mike Ashley.

Must be available in all **** book shops…

  17. Ice – in my trawl through the memory for good wingers I forgot the masters. Robert and Solano. 2001/2 – 25 goals and 29 assists between them. Amazing!

  18. Well, good signs for the weekend.. The local Newcastle team here had a great win, so hopefully it will translate to good things tomorrow!!
It’s nice to see the Roar lose, it means I can avoid the wall-to-wall breast beating and arrogance from their fans!! 😆 😆 😆

  19. Newcastle Jets – hate them with a passion. 11 times Brisbane have played them at home and we’ve lost 8 of them. The only people I hate more are Australian cricketers (and smartarse hillbillies from the west).
