No New Year cheer for United! West Brom 1-0 Newcastle

Berahino gives Baggies the win
Berahino gives Baggies the win
Newcastle failed to record a firs win of 2014 at the the first attempt after losing to West Bromwich Albion yesterday afternoon.

Saido Berahino scored the decisive penalty a few minutes before full-time after Matej Vydra was brought down by Tim Krul, but the reality is that the performance just wasn’t good enough.

Neither side created much in front of goal although West Brom did have the better of the limited chances on offer in what was in all reality a tame affair. The result is undoubtedly a blow for United, but perhaps the more concerning news is the red card awarded to Mathieu Debuchy which will incur a three game ban, and the news that Fabricio Coloccini will be out for four to six weeks with a knee injury.

I can’t comment too much on the match as I’ve only seen the limited highlights on offer and I had the joys of a 13 hour shift at work yesterday so missed it all in real time, but from what I’m gathering the performance just wasn’t there.

I said in the article which covered the match that no game is easy and that you must perform in every game if you want to do well in the Premier League. United still have an heir of inconsistency about them and it would appear that our purple patch is over.

We’ve now got two home games coming up starting with the visit of Cardiff in the FA Cup on Saturday followed by a league game against Manchester City before away trips at West Ham and Norwich bring January to a close. How many points would you fancy from those?

If anything these last two games have confirmed to me what I kind of always thought – that we are a top-half team and nothing else. With a bit of wind behind us we could finish a bit higher like we’ve done before, and when faced with issues we could finish lower like we’ve done before. From this though we just have to move on.

Howay the lads!

  1. Remy rejected a move to a struggling premiership club on a £40k per week contract for a club certain to be relegated but on a wage of £80k per week.
If no club offer him a minimum £80k per week ( including those in the champions league) he will go back to QPR even if they stay in the Championship.
We are currently paying him that wage on loan and we will have to give him that on a permanent contract.
The big question is whether or not Ashley is willing to continue paying him £80k per week or , if another club does come in for him , is Ashley prepared to enter a bidding war for Remy on an even higher wage.?
If we have an agreement with QPR to pay them a £6m fee to sign him permanently then Ashley will probably sign him, but only on his current wage.
Alternatively, if Remy is still with QPR at the start of next season we could again pay them a £2m fee for another season long loan.

Where would Mike Ashley come up with a figure of £10m on any player.

    Why not £20m or £2m?

The reason is because the player has got to be with the extra transfer fee.

If a £10m player gets you 10 goals per season, is it really worth paying £20m for someone that will get you 15 goals a season?

Probably not but if it is, great. You’ll just need to put a business case together & present it to Mike. He’s not going to pay up just because Pardew, the fans or Joe Kinnear say so.

Cisse is also not worth ‘nothing’. He’s still a better striker than Remy but sometimes people lose faith in a player especially when they’re not playing.

It wasn’t too long ago that Debuchy was a worse signing than Simpson, Tiote was worth nothing etc.

We also don’t have a thin squad. We could do with a replacement for Shola but otherwise we have enough depth in every other position for a team not in europe.

Debuchy is easily replaced by Santon & Colo is easily replaced by Mbiwa (who i think is better alongside Williamson than Colo).

I don’t think we need more than 1 player in January. A striker would be nice but that would mean we’d have to get rid of Shola as we already have Gouffran, Cisse & Remy.

If we get more players it would be a bonus but if we sign nobody, it’s no big deal.

  4. Interesting thoughts KK mate although I don’t agree with many of them. I think we’ll be waiting a long while for Ashley to pay 20M pounds for any player no matter how good he might be. He simply doesn’t work that way. He only looks at the bottom line which is profit/loss. I wouldn’t want to be the one trying to sell Cisse right now or any time soon. He’s been shown to be a very one dimensional player and that dimension is completely gone out the window and has been for months and months. He’s lost his starting position and has no chance of getting it back unless Remy is injured. With no starting position he can’t score goals and get his confidence back. He might get another penalty chance but that’s about it. Sad to say because I like the lad. As for depth I think we had better wait and see what happens with Colo and Debuchy out of the lineup. I think Cisse will end the season with 5 goals or less in the league even with increased playing time. Shola is hopeless as far as goal scoring as well. We need a striker and a CB straight away.

  5. KK the 10M pound figure comes from the fact he has spent about 10M on two players and no more than that. That’s the only data I have about his maximum spend limit. Big Dave I’ve been off the blog for quite a while waiting to have my computer fixed which was quite expensive. Hope you and that old curmudgeon icedog have a great new year mate.

  6. Being happy with a 5-0 loss as long as we ‘played them off the park’ might have been a slight exaggeration 😳

Still, with all of this match fixing going on i wouldn’t be suprised 😆

  7. @SolanosTrumpet

I think we we’re fortunate that the Stoke players shot themselves in the foot.

Before the sending off they were comfortably the better team & could have kept hitting us on the counter attack.

It looked like it would almost be a repeat of the Swansea game we lost. Another 3pts dropped because of fatigue.

      (Quote)

  8. That’s a good point TAE mate but I bet the wage offer was lower than Spurs. He would have been a fantastic purchase but around 10M remains the maximum that Ashley has actually paid in 7 years to date. And sadly Remy won’t stay because we won’t give him a big enough wage. To be honest I don’t like Remy that much as a person but he is a very decent striker. Our big problem is our wage limit which makes top players impossible to acquire on permanent deals. We have to continue to shop in France where wages are much lower but that cupboard is pretty bare by now.

      (Quote)

  9. @TAE

I thought Spurs matched the Modric offer but it was Modric who turned us down?

    @G2
I agree, Mike Ashley is now only interested in the bottom line profit/loss etc. That’s why if it’s worth signing a £25m player because they will boost shirt sales or they are the next messi, he’ll do it.

However, he won’t spend £25m on a player if that player is only marginally better than a £10m player.

Is Soldado really two & a half times better than Cisse? If he isn’t then Mike Ashley isn’t interested. I wouldn’t be either.

  10. It’s good to see you on here to GeordieTwo 😎

I’m not keen on Remy. He’s done well but i don’t rate him as an £80k a week player.

I think we can do better. It wasn’t too long ago that Remy was out of favour at Marseille (same situation as Cisse).

      (Quote)

  12. Good points KK but we aren’t even looking for 25M pound rated players and won’t ever be under Ashley. Of course hindsight is 20/20 with Soldado. Spurs clearly overpaid for him but that is the difficulty with foreign imports. I just don’t see Cisse making a recovery with us. He is not an all round player and never will be. I would hope to play him in the cup and hope he gets hot then try to play him enough to score a few goals in the league and sell him for around 5M pounds next summer if we can find a big enough sucker out there somewhere. Sorry to be cynical about Cisse but he has been shocking for far too long now.

G2 I disagree with you on Cisse yeah he has been bad but I just dont believe that you score 20 plus goals in 3 yrs running unless you have something, I just think he has lost his way and im sure other teams would see that, maybe he needs a move to find his touch again but I would like him to find it with us, but he needs to play to find it again.

      (Quote)

  18. Another good piece of memory TAE mate if rumours are true. And yet Ashley still has that money in his pocket as well. I think Ashley could definitely go above 10M if we sell someone first and if the new player is 25 or younger and very promising. Still we will never break any transfer records as with Shearer (nor should we try). Transfer records are completely mad now. Bale is not worth 85M pounds.

      (Quote)

  19. I hope you’re right Big Dave mate because I definitely like Cisse the man. But some of his play has been shocking you have to admit. I remember Pardew shaking his head in disbelief after some of Cisse’s ball control (or lack of). I just don’t understand it but he looks so clumsy. Watching balls bounce of his shins is very disappointing and his turnover rate when trying to hold the ball up has been terrible as well. Still I do hope you’re right but we could be in trouble if Remy gets injured and Cisse has to take his place.

      (Quote)

  20. I think we knew the type of player Cisse was before we signed him. He’s a finisher. If we get the ball quickly to him in the box he will score.

I guess we’ll just have to wait it out.

You’re right about not even looking for £25m players. I don’t even think we need to. Dortmund, Everton & Arsenal have had success on a budget.

There are a lot of clubs in Portugal & Spain where they bring players through the academy without spending big.

Valencia signed Mata on a free, Villa for £8m & Silva came through the academy. 3 world class players on a budget.

Lille brought Debuchy, Cabaye & Hazard through their academy.

I think we were very unfortunate in that game. Had it remained 11 vs 11 i think we could have won it.

Whether that’s bad luck or being unfortunate, it doesn’t matter. Our performance was very good considering that Liverpool are the type of team to pull players around before punishing them

I have a theory on Cisse’s lack of form, I wonder if he’s maybe thinking that split second longer before shooting now instead of instinctively shooting due to his loss of confidence 😕 ,it really could be that simple, the brain is a funny thing. Got to agree with Dave like, no way a 20 odd goal a season for 3 years running forward turns to **** overnight. When he was up front feeding off crosses from Ba and Benny he was **** hot . Still think he would of been better up front than Shola on sunday , more chance of him getting on the end of one of Debbie’s crosses than Shola imo.

I would imagine Man Utd will try to spend big.

Man Utd have very strong financial muscles but the old days are gone when they were the only club that could blow others out of the water.

Chelsea, Man City, Monaco, PSG, they’re all on ********.

      (Quote)

  26. @KIMTOON

I think that’s probably playing a big part.

When he came here he knew he was good so he’d play off instinct. He was confident but still wanted to be a team player.

Now there are way too many doubts & way too much pressure.

Also when he gets too much time (e.g. one on one with the keeper), he turns ****. He’s a pure instinct player, always reacting quicker.

At least that was him before all the doubts.

I also don’t think we get the ball forward into the box & attack quickly enough.

We play too slow, he gets man marked out of the game, he feels the pressure & plays a dodgy pass. Then he feels more pressure.

      (Quote)

  27. Didn’t he score 13 goals last season + how many ruled offside incorrectly (was it 7?).

If 20 goals a season is a bad season, then i’m not sure why we would think he is rubbish.

      (Quote)

  28. We need to find out about Cisse this season because otherwise we need at least 1 new striker. Certainly Pardew appears to have lost faith in him. I would rather try to bring Benny back in more often. He’s a tremendous asset when he plays an unselfish game. With Cabaye and Tiote we can field an attack of Benny, Remy, and Gouffran for at least the rest of this season. That looks like a lineup with goals in it to me. I just don’t think Cisse offers enough. He had a lot of chances at the beginning of the season and just looked terrible.

      (Quote)

  29. KK, Spot on on both counts there ,yep 7 wrongly chalked off and agree we are far too slow getting up in support , that’s one of the reasons he’s offside so much imo.

      (Quote)

  30. I honestly think we have this argument wrong about who is better between Cisse and Shola. The bottom line is both aren’t really good enough and our next two signings must be strikers. Back to the argument or discussion between the misfiring strikers and we are really discussing which one is more crapper than the other. That is the sad thing in this whole debate.

    Pretty grim I agree!
I like Cisse but would like him sold and replaced in all honestly. He is taking up one of the major squad(/first XI) places at the club, and if Pardew doesn’t rate him then we should cut our losses and buy someone that will give Shola 😯 more of a challenge for his starting place.

      (Quote)

  32. Jeez, KK, you are on mind altering drugs!

How would Ashley even contemplate spending £100m when he’s hell bent on spending within our means and not putting any of his own money into the club!

On Pardew, how can you really morally say he doesn’t deserve this season and should be sacked? He had a great first full season and had a bad one last season, even though last season he was really let down by the club after finishing 5th the season before, having Europa League football and the club reduce the size of his squad!

The reality is this is a difficult club to manage, but it’s an awful lot harder with Jabba being the owner.

      (Quote)

  33. @stuart79

Mike Ashley is a billionaire so he has the means to spend £100m without it hurting too much.

If he spent £100m, he’ll want to get something back for it. A big sponsor, regular champions league qualification or a go at the title.

You’re right, he does want the club to fund itself but he would also put £100m into the club if he thought it wasn’t just a case of throwing money away.

    It’s just basic business.

      (Quote)

  34. @stuart79

‘On Pardew, how can you really morally say he doesn’t deserve this season and should be sacked?’

I actually quite like Pardew. His story is a humble one & he really has tried hard but this is football.

If you’re not good enough you need to step aside or be pushed aside. Unless of course you’d be happy for Shola to be given an 8 year contract?

Shola is another nice guy but some of the abuse he gets is terrible.

It’s morally wrong to put either of them through it.

I also don’t honestly know how Mike Ashley is that difficult to work with. Seriously, is it because he doesn’t let the coach be in charge of transfers or what?

The reality is this is a difficult club to manage, but it’s an awful lot harder with Jabba being the owner.

‘Also common mistake – Mike Ashley and Newcastle United are different entities. Him being a billionaire has nothing to do with our finances.’ –

I almost agree with you except for one thing. Him being a billionaire probably means that he does not want or need to bleed the club dry.

Could he bankroll the club? Yes.
Will he bankroll the club? Not without good reason.

Why? Because he has nothing to gain from it. Any pleasure he had, we killed it when some fans sent him death threats etc.

He could pump money into the club to make more money but everybody knows that there are easier ways to make money than running a football club & spending big on transfers.

All he cares about is that the club pays for itself. He’d have no problem buying a £50m player if he could sell the player at the same price or more.

This isn’t a vanity project for him anymore so i don’t understand why people have a go at Mike Ashley for not spending big. Most of the time, it’s just not worth it!

As we speak, this season’s dealings (2013/14) has seen James Perch leave for £756,600 and the onlysenior signing saw Loic Remy arrive with a £2,024,000 year long loan fee agreed. The purchase of youngster Olivier Kemen isn’t showing as yet but elsewhere it has been said he arrived for a fee of around £300,000.

The figures above are dealt with separately to agents fees, but even taking those into account, it is clear that in terms of player transfers Mike Ashley has operated on a basis of sales paying for incoming players and where money has been spent it gets clawed back in eventually, with clear profit on purely player sales/buys.

I wouldn’t have a problem selling Cisse IF Remy was actually our player.

But what happens when he leaves next season. Hope to God Shola leaves because he’s out of contract and we have sold Cisse?

He is a quality goal scorer. We haven’t had much better recently. The amount of criticism he gets is astounding. Especially since most of it is made by Shola worshipers.

If he did leave it would be a massive waste of talent and money. Pardew has consistently favoured strikers that are likely to leave us through greed or amibition (your call).

In Ba’s case he was shunted to the right midfield by Pardew. He had started to score more regularly since he was moved up top last season even if he still wasn’t at his best he managed a goal every 2.5 games. Far better than Shola goal every 26 games.

Yes he started very poorly this season and deserved to be dropped in favour of Shola who had a good couple games.

But Shola has been ***** for half a dozen games now and Cisse has done well enough in his cameos.

He scored a goal which was disallowed and he scored his penalty.

Its massively stupid of Pardew to continue to wreck his confidence and isolate him considering he is our only bloody striker likely to be here next season capable of scoring!

If we got Remy from QPR permanently and we got a strong target man that can actually play football. Then ye, fair enough, sell him. But can you really see that happening with MA in charge?

Pardew needs to wake up. He see further than his nose when it comes to setting a team up for the future. He plays for now and neglects to “build” a team for the future.

That’s why I’ve lost my patience with him. That’s why things always come crashing down on him. There is never a consistent progress. Only short term solutions…

Regarding your advice to KK. I am one who has disagreed with alot of his points. Whilst I would admit to living a fairly safe life, I wouldn’t say that I’m boring, definately not shallow.
I have no problem with people using inflated examples so long as there is substance to the point!.
To say Ashley would spend £100m on a single player is simply bollocks!.
If he was willing to do that why hasn’t he spent £100m on 4 or 5 players?.
The fact is that his transfer policy is to try and get good players for as cheap as possible – every signing he has made so far backs up that theory.

As for a foreign managers being better than Pardew – it’s a hypothetical arguement which can’t be proven or disproven. But KK says it as if it were fact. The reality is that the number of foreign managers far outweigh the number of English managers, so the odds of him being right are steeped in his favour, but there are no guarantees.
That aside, we are still sat 8th with 33 points, so is it right to be calling for Pardews head anyway.

  59. JJ – your points on Cisse would make sense a year ago. Having endured a terrible six months he’s continued to be pants and that’s why Shola’s getting games. I’d rather see Armstrong or Campbell getting games than bounce off my shins Cisse.
