Game On! Newcastle v Cardiff – FA Cup 3rd Round

The FA Cup.

The FA Cup.
Up for a cup?
Good afternoon all, and welcome to this special ‘Game On’ article which will take us through the start of what is hopefully a decent stab at trying to win some silverware.

The visitors today are Cardiff City who will travel to the North-East with their 300 fans in tow hoping for a first win for new boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in this FA Cup 3rd round encounter.

However United will want to progress themselves and although the domestic cups are “not a priority” according to the hierarchy at the club, I do feel that at pitch level those words are lost and that the manager and players want to be professional and try to win a trophy. After all, that is the point in football isn’t it?

The early team news is that Fabricio Coloccini, Yohan Cabaye and Mathieu Debuchy will definitely miss the match through injury and suspension whilst Tim Krul is doubtful. Official team news will be published shortly after 2pm and can be found at the bottom of this article but in the meantime why not head over to the match preview and immerse yourself in some history of the fixture along with aforementioned injury news and some possibly inane rambling from myself.

The bad news is that there are a lot of games today and ours isn’t exactly top of the bill and so isn’t being advertised as being broadcast anywhere here in the UK or overseas. However there is still a slim chance that there may be a stream available so if anyone does find one then please feel free to leave a link to it in the ‘comments’ section below.

It just feels to me as though the FA Cup has been devalued somewhat in recent years. It used to be THE cup to go for but at the end of the day I guess money talks and the serious money is no longer in the domestic cup competitions.

However as I said in my preview, we are surely ideally placed to have a go at bringing the fans some success? We aren’t going to get relegated and we aren’t going to finish much, if any, higher than we are now in the league so why not go for it. With some intent and a bit of luck why can’t we go far?

Howay the lads!

  1. a game Pards said we should defo win and we’re defo favorites…

Hopefully Kinnear is elsewhere signing new-blood

      (Quote)

  2. we have no excuses, Decent team put out. Never applied much pressure anytime in the game. We sat back after we scored. 🙄

    Parthetic…

      (Quote)

  3. Yet another embarrassing loss, we are worse than pathetic – Pards doesn’t seem to have a clue and is constantly outwitted by other managers – time for a change, the 7 wins in 9 masked his failings and I predict we’ll now go on a long losing streak starting with a hammering by Citeh, luckily we shouldn’t get dragged into relegation battle but will finish around 12th

**** me, this was an extremely poor Cardiff team and even with the new manager bounce especially given that Solky made 5 changes to the first team himself so Pards can’t even use that excuse

      (Quote)

  4. Oh well, Man city next home game….

Don’t know whether to laugh or cry about Alan Pardew…..

worst record as manager of derby matches
worst record as manager of cup matches.

  5. just a blip man, new team. Missing some cracking players 2day.

Get the City game out of the way… 6th here we come! 😀

Defo need a new forward tho to freshen things up.. have my doubts it will happen like

      (Quote)

Man City are going the murder us… Then we have West Ham away.

If we lose that… Then I’d say we’ve gone from a slightly above average start. To a slightly below average start.

We need a signing to give players belief of ambition and boost morale.
It’s all psychology though because Pardew won’t use the squad to its full potential no matter who we sign.

  7. forget it, Fa Cups gone.. we had ne chance of winning it anyway. It saves being disappointed in the later stages..

      (Quote)

  8. Well, Jabba and co will be happy, no chance of Europe via the cup now, just need to stay away from top 6 now and job done 🙄 .

      (Quote)

  9. What does AP expect, when he keeps the same team for 3 months without integrating certain squad players into the team (apart from Anita). Then expects to make 7 changes and produce a performance. Everyone just expects HBA to start and run amok. He’s bound to be rusty and short of confidence like the rest of them.

APs approach is so wrong. After last season, he’s **** scared of playing anyone apart from his favourites and reliables. Was always going to b an issue with fatigue, hence our shocking performances since swansea. I include Stoke in that, as we were well on our way to a disappointing loss. You have to wonder at his grasp of the bigger picture.

      (Quote)

  10. @mark: But the run of losing games….. 🙄 🙄

Even when we play at home to cardiff we can lose, i don’t dare think much of winning west ham, norwich away games.

      (Quote)

  11. Taking note that after those two away games is Home game against Sunderland…

Which put the record of Alan pardew in derby matches into spotlight. 🙄

      (Quote)

  12. Oh, after derby matches, we have chelsea and Spurs…

    Totally screwed then. 🙄 🙄

  13. JJ
I don’t need an Internet stream to bash Cisse a round trip of 170 miles for every home game plus another couple of hundred for away games is quite enough thank you.
Mission accomplished by NFUC out of the cup with a narrow defeat.
I would sack Pardew now his set up and tactics today was a disgrace. I could pick our best 11 but the hard bit is when that 11 doesn’t play and he is clueless

      (Quote)

  14. Steve hit the nail on the head when he said it was a pass poor Cardiff team that beat us today

      (Quote)

  15. I don’t see the big issue.

    The cups aren’t a priority.

We can now concentrate on the real issue of the premier league.

      (Quote)

  16. Troy

Objective is to finish between 8th and 12th. Then we are well on course. We could do that without a manager.

      (Quote)

  17. Buddy@173 – spot on.

@JJ – Thanks for fighting my corner yesterday.
Some people will always defend pardew by saybong his hands are tied.

After all Mike Ashley is the devil because he’s tight & keeps selling our ‘best players’ & replacing them with ‘**** players’.

Joe Kinnear’s fault we lost today.

I didn’t see the game but it sounds like it was fairly even & fairly rubbish.

Why was sissoko & gouffran starting again today??

      (Quote)

  18. Pards joins the list of every other toon manager who has failed to win the cup since 1955. 😯

No big deal. He’s still the manager and may do it next year. 😉

      (Quote)

  19. JJ@171 sums up what i think abput the club.

I’ve no idea why some fans feared relegation before the start of the season.

The players are good enough to get 70pts a season. 50pts is easy.

      (Quote)

  20. Troy,

His record in cups is abysmal. I don’t know the exact figures, but I can imagine its somewhere around the 90% loss percentage in 4 FA Cups & 3 League Cups. Correct me if I’m wrong, but thats atrocious especially for a manger who harps on about wanting to do well in these competitions.

      (Quote)

  21. Pardew should have played with the team I suggested yesterday.
The guy just will not accept good advice.
    Sack the fool, 😆

      (Quote)

  22. Well at least Cisse scored and it was against a premiership team so hopefully that will give him a confidence boost . Apart from that what a frigging shambles 1-0 up at home in the 3rd round of the Fa cup and we blow it .

      (Quote)

  23. Our season is effectively over now then . Pards dare not get us finishing 5th or 6th , so we can assume 7th or lower end of the season ,unless we are aiming for top 4 , hang on forgive me I just wandered into the twilight zone there for a sec, like I said 7th or lower and that’s your lot ,happy new year.

      (Quote)

  24. Well tomorrow is something to look out for , my father and Brother are Carlisle united fans ,i really hope they pull off the shock of the round and knock the scum out .

  25. Kim

Indeed im sure in the summer people would have turned their nose up at a nice top half finish when the majority were predicting relegation, Administration, Bankrupty, Infamy and any fucking think else 🙄

      (Quote)

  26. Sad to say but it’s poor when you can’t get a win at home in our first fa cup game of the season. Couldn’t find a live link so just going on what’s been said. Good to see that Cisse scored but that’s about it. Bring on Man City 😥

      (Quote)

  27. Wish I hadn’t bothered going. Normal service is resumed. The player I talked about last week, Craig Noone, came on and scored after about 30 seconds. He may not be as classy as Ben Arfa but he can get it in goal instead of hitting the woodwork!

      (Quote)

  28. The players deserve stick as well, They cant continue to hide behind pardew.

I thought it was a good side we started with, A better one than them in all areas. To lose to a watered down Cardiff side from 1-0 up with quarter of an hour to go is pathetic regardless of what the manager did or didnt do. The players started getting deeper, Stopped keeping the ball and invited pressure.

Were still in a good position on the heels of the european spots as galling as the last couple of matches have been. The last time we were on our collective arses with some daunting fixtures on the horizon there was a reaction. Lets hope for the same in the next month or so…

      (Quote)

  29. @Our season is effectively over now then… Seriously 😯

Its not that bad, 🙁 we have a lot to play for.

We’re in a good position in the league…

      (Quote)

  30. Just read pards after match interview and it makes for interesting reading , he has obviously told them a few home truths he would not go into detail but i have a feeling one or 2 might have played their last game for us .

      (Quote)

  31. @MARK

For a lot of fans, the season really is over.

I think this group of players should be (& would be under a better manager) challenging for 4th every season in the same way Everton do.

We’re a bigger club than Everton so should we not be doing better than them?

Apparently, i must be a WUM or just another deluded fan. A good season for us is just about finishing in the top 10.

Still if we finish 12th or 13th it’s not that bad.

Even if we finish 16th, we’ll just keep giving the manager & coaches another season.

Don’t forget they’re all English! Most of them ex-geordies!!

We invented the game!! What do those foreigners know??? You know, those foreign coaches in Spain & Germany…

      (Quote)

  32. Mark, aye but for how long mate, Pards won’t want 5th or 6th as I’m certain he don’t fancy the rigors of Europa messing up next season, so we have to hope there is some ambition for higher than that or at least 7th or 8th, big deal that won’t bring us a cup will it. And as I said, that’s season over from the fans point of view as all we are doing now is playing to stay in the league and make sure the owners finances don’t take a hit 🙄 bring on the mediocrity . Don’t get me wrong I’m glad I’m not in the Scums position but is that seriously how we measure the success of a season ,that we aren’t fighting relegation.

      (Quote)

  33. @KK

well if ppl feel that bad about it i’d ask them did they expect to win the cup?
Yes, pathetic loss but its a distraction out of the way for me. Its only one loss..

We would never of guessed we would be in this position (league) so lets enjoy the rest of the season, who knows, we may have a couple of players lined up.

i reckon Its far from over

      (Quote)

  34. The players are responsible for their performances. Any player that doesn’t work hard or plays bad, will get stick from the manager & fans.

Shola, Cisse, Obertan, Ben Arfa, Tiote, Cabaye, Colo, Williamson – i can’t think of one player that hasn’t been criticised for a bad performance.

For some reason though, anybody who criticises a sacked league 1 manager is a WUM because of course we could never get anyone better than Pardew.

Lets not forget all the great things Pardew has done for us:
    1) He got us fifth! Fifth!!

    2) Sneaked a win vs Chelsea (who should have been 3 up by halftime)

    3) Krul bailed him out vs Spurs (who should have won by 5 or 6 goals)

    4) We dominated & beat Man Utd (Cleverly & Jones vs Tiote, Anita & Cabaye) – Very impressive!!

      (Quote)

  35. @Kim. I’m sure the players want 5th or 6th.. I doubt pards could do much to dampen their ambitions..

We can’t throw away wins at manu, Spurs, beating Chesea at home because we got beat in the FA Cup.. I’m over it already..
    bring on City 😯 😉

      (Quote)

  36. @Kim

I expect to play in a similar vein to where we were before West Brom away.

Sign a new player or 2 and go for 6th. Its certainly better than looking over our shoulders, being happy we finished above S’land.

Theres a bit of distance between us and 10th but not much between us and 6th..

      (Quote)

  37. Mark@191, I can’t answer for KK ,but yes I was hoping to win the cup, if you look at it logically the top 5 or 6 are preoccupied with trying to win the league and the relegation clubs busy trying to stay in the PL so that leaves the middle zone. Out of that bunch I would of said we had a great chance. Look we know we have no chance of the PL title or probably top 4 so that just leaves the Cap one cup ,the FA cup and Europa to aim for ,I think the latter isn’t really on the owner or Pards agenda tbh ,now the cups are gone ,well that’s it apart from a good old relegation battle which thankfully looks off the horizon. Would I class top 10 but not 6 or above as successful , well I suppose so but it isn’t the same fuzzy wuzzy feeling of winning a cup is it.

      (Quote)

  38. Pardew said afterwards: “Apart from the last 18 minutes we were in control.

“To throw it away like that is terribly disappointing because we got the goal.

“We looked like we were the best team and they get a wonder goal out of nothing really.

    “Then a set play.

“I felt we were second best for and against.

    “It cost us the game.”

Pardew also had cause for complaint after the equaliser after Anthony Taylor didn’t stop play before Craig Noone struck one of the goals of the day.

Pardew said: “I thought the ref should have given a free-kick before then.

“He let a little incident go.

“He put the whistle to his lips and momentarily that makes you stop.

“And it was that indecision by him that made us back off a bit and gave him a chance to shoot.

“But it’s one of them, I don’t want to go on about the referee.”

Pardew suffered his third exit in the third round stage of his tenure.

And Pardew reflected: “I am disappointed with my group.

“We’ve managed to lose a game that we were in control of.

“We don’t seem to be able to get through this tie (third round day)

“For the last three years I don’t know, it’s science against me.

“As a group we were up for the game.

“The first half was difficult because there wasn’t 50,000 in here to assess, I thought we played quite well.

“We contained them and controlled the game.

“The start of the second half was terrifice and we looked OK.

“But the last 20 minutes we didn’t play well and it lost us the game.”

Pardew suggested there were harsh words after the game but didn’t go too far when he said: “One or two things that might have contributed to that.

“I made it clear in the dressing room.

“I aint going to relay that to the Press.”

But he felt the defeat came because United stood off their opponents and told the BBC: “We know at home, especially of this quality, you can’t just back off.

“You have to keep full on.

“It’s a level when you back off and play a little bit negatively, you are in trouble.

    “Maybe we did that.

“Certainly they controlled last period of the game – and that is the most crucial.”

  39. @MARK

I don’t care about the cup. It doesn’t have the same magic it used to have for me.

I also agree, if we’re not going to win it (Swansea & Wigan seem to be able), the sooner we’re out of it the better.

Having said that & i keep saying this, performances matter more than results for me.

I didn’t see the game. To me it sounds like it was fairly even & fairly rubbish for both teams.

I could understand if i was a Cardiff fan. Lower quality players, worse owner, young new & inexperienced manager etc.

How can i understand our performance though? 2nd longest manager in the league, no new just arrived off the boat players, a staring 11 that should be comfortable enough against anyone in the bottom 10.

All i can put it down to is rusty players & bad coaches & manager. The players shouldn’t be rusty because they should all have had game time previously vs Swansea, Stoke, WBA etc & come on us subs in other games.

The manager & coaches have had more time than anyone else except Wenger himself!

It’s miserable expecting to see Parder & Carver in the dug out until 2020!!

      (Quote)

  40. same **** different day 👿
I honestly think Pardew doesn’t have a clue how to get his team on the front foot and attack minded.
Its all about defence for him.
Go 1-0 up and defend it.
Then when it goes *** up as per usual, bring on shola.
    unbelievably ****.
wtf happened in the first half.
Its not so much about losing, but the overall performance.
What was the game plan ❓ there clearly wasn’t one.
Ben Arfa does my tits in too. Good skills, but no brain.
Honestly we do better without him.
Without Cabaye, Remy and Debs we are no better than a championship side.
A squad full of no hopers

      (Quote)

  41. Mark , I really don’t think Pards wants Europa again, and there isn’t enough cash in it for Jabba to demand it either. As for signing a couple, I don’t expect us to but I do think a few will go .

      (Quote)

  42. Pardew is a tactical genius. What other manager would have the foresight to bring on Shola to rescue a game? Look at Shola’s goal scoring record. A goal scorer extraordinaire. We are lucky to have Pardew. What other manager has shown such success at defending a one goal lead? It is unfortunate that opposing teams don’t recognise this tactic and spoil it by scoring more goals than us. They are to blame. We should stick with Pardew’s attacking flair.

      (Quote)

  43. @Kim.

I never have the fuzzy wuzzy feeling under Pards for the FA Cup, especially when science is against him 😯 😆

He sets his teams up to squeeze the life out of the game, sit back and absorb pressure & hopefully score on the counter attack or the 2nd half. You cant play his style in the FA cup as teams only have one chance and they go for it.

Its not a style i particularly like but it gets us points in the league.

Whether Jabba releases funds or not if we reach Europe I think Pards would love to finish 6th and in Europe.

He’s not going to be here forever so it will look good on his cv. I also think he’d like to play in Europe again. I cant think of any manager that wouldnt

      (Quote)

  46. Mark @202 is spot on about this:

He sets his teams up to squeeze the life out of the game, sit back and absorb pressure & hopefully score on the counter attack or the 2nd half. You cant play his style in the FA cup as teams only have one chance and they go for it.

If there is any style to Pardew’s football, this is it.

      (Quote)

  47. @MARK

I think Kim has a point regarding avoiding the Europa league.

There is a lot more preparation that the manager & coaches need to do & whilst Pardew would like us to finish 6th, he really wouldn’t want the additional workload.

      (Quote)

  48. Mark-agreed. Do people honestly find it less heartbreaking to lose in the final? Do people not remember those games 10-15 years ago 😕

Was by all means a bad game but again we’ve had some poor luck. It’s another showing that Cisse can score from leftovers but not through balls hence why a target man better than shola is required which I’ve pushed for all along. And again, Santon is nowt special on the right and it’s something we need to address, four good left backs, one good right back and some questionable rotation options. Tayls again is a **** defender. So not a lot we didn’t already know.

Given some investment the season is far from over, this place is getting worse and worse by the week, or even day 😕

      (Quote)

  49. @KK

thats his style m8 and he’s admitted to playing like this.

When FA Cup type teams (stoke) score first it totally fu**s up our game plan, thankfully that day the ref was dishing out cards 😛

      (Quote)

  50. Roberto Martinez (i know some on here don’t like him), Brendan Rodgers even Ian Holloway want to play football with good engineered/coached attacking flair.

Why don’t the rest of the English coaches & managers pick it up??

Ian Holloway watched Swansea, who were managed by Roberto Martinez at the time, “four or five times” after being sacked by Leicester in May 2008. “Swansea changed how I see the whole of football,” said

“They made me realise how beautiful the game is and how passing and moving can make you a better defensive unit.”

  53. I find it amusing Pardew keeps telling us he’s an offensive coach, always looking to score, get them on the back foot..etc

he’s not that different to Big Sam, apart from he doesnt always play hoofball

  54. Have to say I am gutted to go out in this round again of the FA again.
But I am glad we’re not in the same position we were in this time last season.
And tbh while Jabba is here I really dont expext much else simply because he has no ambition for us apart from staying in the Prem

  56. @NEWKIE

Thw magic has gone from the cup because we don’t seriously challenge for it. I honestly would prefer losing in the final than losing against Cardiff today. Who wouldn’t?

Heartbreaking yes, but all part of the enjoyment. Games & results like today aren’t enjoyable, they’re just boring & miserable.

Maybe we had some bad luck. I don’t mind losing if we lose despite deserving the win. As long as we put in a good performance, i’m happy but it sounds like a rubbish performance.

Santon is as good (maybe better) on the right as he is on the left in all of the games i’ve seen him played there.

Tayls is very close to Williamson in terms of quality. The reason i want him gone is because he is too injury prone.

1 striker to replace Ameobi is the only necessary transfer we need. Everything else can wait until the summer.

There is no denying that player for player (on paper) we had the better team so the question is, why did we lose?

Was it just a one off bad day.

Are the players **** despite the manager & coaches getting the best out of them.

Are the players good despite being hindered by the manager & coaches?

Is it a bit of both?

      (Quote)

  57. <<<<<<<<<<< cant beleive we crashed out of the cup losing to a team that plays in wellys 😯

      (Quote)

  58. KK- I can’t really be bothered to entertain you much tonight so ill just say this. If the magic is gone then please have a word with your best mate Mike because it is from his orders that Pardew and the players are to make no effort at winning it.

I can’t even imagine how demoralising it must be to a player to hear that your efforts in cup games are not required or needed and will not be rewarded in kind. Imagine going in to a game with that attitude? We had lost before going into the match. As Ashley’s bonus offer a few years ago proved, he only cares about the league finish 😉

  59. @NEWKIE – 213

I don’t know if this is sarcasm (it’s hard to tell on the internet sometimes 😆 ):

‘KK-Yup, and what a **** manager he is, his results being put to shame by Pulis and his anti-football ’

You’re probably reight about Pulis getting better results than Holloway.

Even at Wigan Martinez did worse than Steve Bruce & Paul Jewell.

    Average points over 38 games:
    Jewell – 59pts
    Bruce – 48pts
    Martinez – 43pts

Still, i wouldn’t really expect Wenger, or Guardiola to do much better Martinez at Wigan.

Mourinho, & Diego Simeone would do better than Jewell & Bruce though.

Different managers, different playing styles at different levels = different results.

      (Quote)

  60. @newkie

You can’t be bothered tonight, i can’t be bothered, the players can’t be bothered, now do you see the Pardew effect?

I’m going to defend Pardew on this though because as a human being, i think he’s a nice guy ala Shola, Jonas, Obertan etc:

If he said cups are not a priority, it’s probably because tbh it’s true. I’d rather go out of the cup than see the club get relegated Wigan style.

I think that’s all Pardew meant

      (Quote)

  61. Also, Monaco have signed Lacina Traore so next time signing strikers is discussed, that is one off the list.

  62. “He put the whistle to his lips and momentarily that makes you stop. And it was that indecision by him that made us back off a bit and gave him a chance to shoot.”
Is Pardew saying that his professional footballers stop playing when the referee puts his hand to his mouth? You play till you hear the whistle and nothing else! That’s not how I saw it though, they broke and scored from a good shot, just like we missed some shots that would have been a good goal. More waffle from Pardew, why leave it till the last 6 minutes to make significant changes when the opposition manager is running rings around you? Same shortcomings as Hughton then. Too little and far too late.
