Are we about to see incoming transfers at NUFC?

Luuk who is back…
Earlier this evening some rather interesting news emerged from Newcastle United.

Quieter than expected but just in case you weren’t aware, the January transfer window is open which means clubs can do business once more.

Now generally the mention of transfer windows sends me to sleep. As a United fan I’ve kind of starting wondering who we’ll see leave rather than who we’ll see arrive with last January proving to be an exception in terms of activity rather than the norm.

However sources at Sky Sports News “understand” that Mike Ashley has sanctioned the arrival of up to four players in this window with no pressure to sell any current players to finance these deals.

Details are sketchy but one rumoured deal is supposed to regard the arrival of Luuk de Jong on an initial loan deal with a view to making the switch permanent in the summer.

It was well documented that we were in for the Holland striker previously but the former FC Twente front man opted to join Borussia Monchengladbach instead where he has since struggled to settle.

Another name mentioned has been that of Remy Cabella of Montpellier. The versatile attacker can play on either wing or as an attacking midfielder although a price tag in the region of €14 million would seem to me to be too steep for us.

If we do strengthen then great. It’s what we all want but at the moment there is nothing concrete in any of this and actions ultimately speak louder than words.

There are still obstacles however if this does turn out to be true. One of those obstacles is Joe Kinnear who might actually have to do some of the work he is paid to do and get players “over the line” to coin a popular phrase in these parts.

Of course its just as likely all rubbish and we’ll end up with nobody. Putting my tinfoil hat for a moment, how about the club leaking a bit of positive news like this following on from some defeats and a cup exit?

Cynical? Me? I never used to be…

  1. It will be interesting to see how we play against Man City. Is it possible that if we’re truly whacked, say 5-0 that it would change the board’s attitude about transfers this window? The board says we have the best squad in quite some time but I would argue we only have a decent starting XI and about 3 other decent players. The injuries and suspensions should help the board understand that if they have a clue.

  2. Or at the back Kimtoon. With Colo out we have Willo, Mbiwa, and Saylor. Saylor hasn’t looked like himself at all this season what with injuries, suspension, and benching. Mbiwa should come good but still seems to lack confidence at times. For fullbacks we have Santon, Debuchy, Haidara, and Dummett which might be enough. For me we absolutely must get a CB and a striker before Colo and Remy leave.

  3. This idea that everything is peachy with the squad is just bafflegab as usual. The board are as full of it as Pardew. We have 1 decent striker (a loanee), and about 1.5 decent CB’s until Mbiwa comes good if he does. We have a right footed starting LB who can’t cross with his left foot to save his life. That doesn’t sound too peachy to me.

  4. Absolutely Kimtoon @229. Oh wait I forgot the brilliant Obertan and the often used Marveaux. Now I see what the board means. 😆

  5. In fact even Gomis may be too much for us to afford. After all I believe our offer is 2M since he’s out of contract this summer (I think). So why pay that kind of massive money for him if we can get him for free in the summer? We might just be able to afford a 17 year old from somewhere foreign to make it sound sexy this January but that’s about it.

      (Quote)

  6. looks like the Gomis deal is dead in the water terms with player are agreed but agents want 1mill to tie up deal, toon will not pay it,move on,good get out for toon

      (Quote)

  7. The board also still haven’t confirmed whether we have Category 1 status. More stalling? To what purpose? What a bunch of bozos. They’re perfect for Ashley though.

      (Quote)

  8. Spot on ice. We’ll get him on a free in the summer though to replace Shola. That should really help us. Probable a move from 9th to 8th next season with Gomis and his 4 goals. Oh wait, Remy will be gone so maybe a slip to 14th?

      (Quote)

  9. G2 trouble is mate the agents will still want 1mil to do deal on a free plus player will want a signing on fee,is he worth 2mill plus wages just a slight up-grade on shola imo

      (Quote)

  10. Another of our many problem is that if we continue to sit mid table Pardew is going nowhere. Ashley likes having another yes man who is cheap for the wage bill. Have him on the yacht once a year for a pissup and he’s as happy as a clam.

      (Quote)

  11. I think he’ll be too good to resist as far as Ashley is concerned ice mate. Another free even if there are a few costs is just too good to refuse for Mr. Moneybags. Our owner, the man, the legend. the flop.

      (Quote)

  12. G2 think we just have to accept we will not look to move forward as a club as long as we stay in PL jabba is happy, forget moving into the top six while he holds the rains at the toon, sad but true imo mate 🙁

      (Quote)

  13. Completely agree ice mate. It may be a long wait to be rid of him as well. He’s like toe fungus, very hard to get rid of and so attractive.

      (Quote)

  14. Ice @233 – sounds like a familiar story to the summer that doesn’t it mate. Wasn’t it greedy agents who stopped the transfer in the summer – or so we were told

      (Quote)

  15. SHARPY aye your right, but strange we were in the top five clubs that payed the most to agents 😕

      (Quote)

  16. Ice – I think last Jan Ashley had to accept that he was going to get screwed with agents fees, because we needed those players – plus the 5 players fees didn’t really hit his pocket to severely.

I think the interest in Gomis will remain throughout Jan in a hope that the agents may reduce the fee. Or they may be hoping that Gomis might waive his sign on fee – like Sissoko did last Jan.

The thing about this season though is that we have points on the board, so I think that while Ashley will allow up to 4 signing, it will definately be on his terms.

  17. I think we wont get anyone in untill we move a couple on ,i have just got the feeling Kinnear is as busy trying to find clubs for Jonas ,Obertan and Marveaux as he is trying to get our targets in .

  18. Oooo, looking forward to seeing comments about:

95% of transfer rumours are made up by news outlets
Sports Direct relationship with NUFC clarified.
10th is minumum position aimed for in league.

  19. <<<<<<< dont think remy is ganna be staying so why put greedy harrys player in the shop window bench him and play cisse and whos to say cisse would not had had 10 goals by now if he had the same playing time as remy, bench remy and watch his value plummet

      (Quote)

  20. Can’t believe the Scum are 90 minutes away from a trip to Wembley , the thought of that lot winning a cup makes me feel sick. What is it with Poyet and his teams in cup comps.

      (Quote)

  21. that american dude that plays up front for scumberland proper clogger he is,has to be the worst striker i seen for a long time 😆

      (Quote)

  22. I think with Remy the issue of his court case is still there. I bet Harry would love to double his money on Remy and have funds to spend in Jan right now but it ain’t gonna happen. Why would we want to help QPR get automatic promotion from £16M worth of Jan signings anyway? 😈 If they don’t get up he will force to leave and they will have less bargaining power over price. 🙂

  23. @ DJG
you any idea when hes in court for that rape charge? he gets convicted on that hes going to prison for at least a couple of years minmum

      (Quote)

  24. @ KIMTOON
<<<<<<< thinks if thats the case no team is ganna pay that with that charge hanging over his head 😀

  25. youve got to hand it Ashley and Co not giving a **** & blatantly lying about nobody wanting to pay to advertise in the stadium. 🙄

I’d love someone to pretend to be from a large company and record the conversation with our toon chiefs when inquiring about the availability of advertising spaces…

    from the fans meetings…
There were also questions about falling commercial revenues and confirmation that Sports Direct and its brands (Firetrap for instance) don’t pay for the advertising space they have splattered all over the stadium, “but it would be sold if other advertisers wanted the space.” I’m betting they don’t have too many people pushing too hard to find buyers for that space.

For me, the most frustrating thing about all of this is that Ashley’s transfer policy is oh-so-close to building something, but with all of the above and his mates as Director of Football and Manager, these things will never be achieved.

The club looks like nothing more than a cash cow and there’s very little we can do about it.

      (Quote)

  26. @MARK
i think we only 2 or 3 quality players away from competeing with the big guns meself 😮

      (Quote)

  27. @TAE

The Fans know that but do Kinnear, Pardew and Ashley realise that, if so will they buy?

going off the link Kim posted we weren’t bothered about the cups and can’t be arsed with Europe. Happy for a top 10 finish… Whooopee.. I’m sure the players morale are high after hearing that..

      (Quote)

  28. Moooo Mark mate. Cash cow it is. We must be the only club in the Prem that has no interest from outsiders in advertising in the ground. Amazing that. 😆

      (Quote)

  29. Shame on me, I almost forgot the mantra: Don’t read the original source in context; far better to believe negative and unsubstantiated hearsay.

  30. reading the minutes on the NUFC site. It sounds like a wild party. Nowt to get excited over.

  31. @Prem.

Good idea m8 but how would that work ?

What could we advertise thats not linked to SD. Even the store has been taken over by SD. not sure how they work out the profits etc..

      (Quote)

  32. Sorry meant indie owners would have smaller profit margins if SD sell fire trap. nowt to do with being embarrassed by being associated with SD.

      (Quote)

  33. Mark: “Even the store has been taken over by SD”

Try reading the minutes of the meeting.

      (Quote)

  34. the comments I read from Indie owners and Adidas commented on the kind of discount store it was. Similar to Peter Werth when JD bought them. Went from a decent name to a cheap range of discounted product.

      (Quote)

  35. Bris-what does it say about the store? I saw the bit about saying the shirts were the fastest selling in 6 years and that this years accounts would show the “strongest commercial position ever” but nothing related to the store? Or is it that because those sound good you think the store is as was? (which would make sense)

I did laugh at the bit about Ashley being as committed as he was “3 or 4 years ago” which could mean anything just that we’re not openly up for sale..

      (Quote)

  36. Bris, Yeah I have no problem with the bulk buying ,stock distribution by SD ,it makes financial sense I think, but what happens if he ever sells us ,does SD still continue to do all that and if so at what cost?, to revert back to our own depots and distribution network could prove costly . Would we have to pay more than the current £400 odd K we presently pay and while I’m at it why are we even paying that when SD get free advertising with us . I know at this stage the debt will get brought up but for me these are two separate issues .

I do like the away ticket pricing policy NUFC are trying to implement and wish more clubs would reciprocate . I have read Liverpool fans praise it and they are sad that their club won’t sign up to the idea.

It is how ever quite clear that Europa is not priority and the cups aren’t either which really disappoints me as given we won’t win the league or likely make top 4 anytime soon that is our only chance of glory. 🙁

It’s not all self pity and woe is me , it’s genuine concern that a club steeped in fa cup history has all but given up on winning it again.

      (Quote)

  37. Carrying on from my point @278, there was rumour some time back, not sure think maybe ICE posted that a buyer was in for Toon but put off by Ashley wanting to maintain an input in it. I wonder if that would be linked to SD distributing merchandise on our behalf, just a thought like.

      (Quote)

  38. Apparently the club made 6 mil from Europa which while nothing on the CL isn’t that bad, basically was the equivalent of us finishing 8th if each place is worth 750k. Surely that would get us a purple 🙂

      (Quote)

  39. Newkie,
And if you actually win the Europa league, that prize purse doubles and it grows substantially by the fact that you then qualify for the Champions League.

So its a massive price purse for the winners now really.

Only a fool wouldn’t want his team to qualify for it… Oh wait…

      (Quote)

  40. Newkie, I don’t understand the lack of ambition, really I don’t, it baffles me tbh.

Another thing from the minutes, this academy status question, why does the answer to that have to come later? surely they know whether its yes or no. Boro and the Scum both have it and can go scout at any club to see if a gem can be picked up, if we havn’t got it then it’s a disgrace for such a large club as it seriously handicaps us in that respect.

      (Quote)

  41. And another thing, all this on SSN about Ashley sanctioning up to 4 players has been blown to bits by the admission in the meeting that IF a player at the right price comes along they will buy. It’s clear they are happy with the squad we have and I can’t see anyone coming in tbh.

      (Quote)

  42. Personally I would change the Premier League so that only the top two sides qualify automatically. The third place side goes into the qualifiers and the winners of the FA Cup go straight into the Champions League.

That will get teams taking the competition seriously again.

May help to correct the imbalance of the top teams too.

The only clause I’d have in there is that if the winners are relegated in the same year the position goes to third place and the qualifying place goes to 4th in the league – as it is now.

      (Quote)

  43. JJ-Aye well it does now, if it had been like that last year we might have gone at it with a bit more ambition. Honestly if we had signed a few of the Jan players in the summer I think we could have won it. But for the disallowed Cisse goals and the brainfarts of Taylor and Santon, we were definitely a match for them.

I think tongue in cheek is the word, credit to Pardew for reeling in some big fish with that comment, Troy-esque almost 😆

      (Quote)

  44. Kim,
They probably mean four youngsters under 17.

Wouldn’t surprise me if that was all we brought in this window. At most we’ll get one senior player.

      (Quote)

  45. Kim-I think with the academy status we were rejected at first but after some investment we are now being looked at again? I thought I remembered us being reclassified as category 1 a while after failing it but maybe I guess not.

JJ-They would be good changes I think, and the F.A have the power to switch it about, but it wouldn’t sit well with Sky I imagine so it’d never happen.

      (Quote)

  46. JJ@284, cracking idea mate, totally on board with that Idea.

Newkie@287, I thought we had it now 😕 it’s all a bit murky isn’t it.

      (Quote)

  47. KIM aye it was me through a third party (but a good one) wanted 15% share and some sort deal on being able to advertise his products the deal never got off the ground because of clauses ect,no chance of it happening as the guy has bought somewhere else that i wont disclose as it would drop my contact in it if you get my drift 😉
