Meet the latest transfer window saga

Remy Cabella
Remy Cabella
Maybe it’s just me but every time a transfer window comes around there always seems to a be some long-standing saga that tends to dominate the month.

Maybe it’s not just Newcastle United who go through this? To be fair they are the only club I look out for and don’t really keep an eye on what is going on elsewhere so maybe it goes on at other clubs also?

Anyway, back to United. This window appears to be no different. A few names have been mentioned thus far with the future of Loic Remy looking like it may turn into a saga, but one name has kept cropping up repeatedly with quotes and sound bites popping up all over the place, and that name is Remy Cabella.

Now I haven’t got much of a clue about him aside from what I’ve been reading about him from people who claim to have seen the lad play, but I could just as easily say that about most of our transfer dealings in recent years with the only exception being Yohan Cabaye who I had witnessed play prior to his move to St James’ Park, albeit just the once.

The previous days have been filled with reports from France, from player, manager and president regarding the future of Cabella and it is those who are touting the name of United more than anyone else. I mean just today Cabella has been at it and it quoted as saying the following:

“For the moment, in my head, I’m 100 per cent Montpellier,” he told French radio station RMC.

“If a proposal comes, it is up to the two clubs to discuss and I will think in terms of that. I am not aware of what is happening, I am dedicated to playing and that is the most important.”

Asked about a potential move to St James’ Park Cabella said: “Newcastle? Well, we realise that at some point we must leave. I think I’m capable of it. England interests me, there are good clubs out there. If Montpellier reaches an agreement with an English club that suits me, I’ll be happy.”

“I think this is my last season with the club and I do not want to leave Montpellier in Ligue 2. This is my last year and I hope to finish in style. I love England but also Spain Italy and Germany,” Cabella added.

As you can see it’s much ado about nothing that will no doubt be twisted and will have the most coverage extracted from it as possible. In reality there isn’t a lot there though, not for us anyway, and he could just as easily end up elsewhere or staying at Montpellier until the end of the season.

I personally don’t think we’ll see Cabella at United. I think we’re being used as a name once again just because, with our recent activity in France, we are a believable prospect who is perceived to have a decent scouting set up which makes it easy.

Anyone agree?

  1. It’s what news media do. Media junkies can’t get enough of it.

Me, I’m just a lawnmower; you can tell me by the way I walk.

  2. i cant wait till the window slams shut and we can just get back to only watching the football and going through the ups and downs of the second half of the season . All this transfer bullshit is just getting boring and lets be honest nobody believes most of the rumors anymore .

  3. nobody will arrive at newcastle.

Its our strongest squad for sometime. keep the squad fit and we’ll be on target for a top 10 finish.

Why buy anyone that might take us to Europe, thats just too ambitious for us, maybe in 6 yrs we’ll aim for the top 7

  4. Mark is probably right.

I do think the club would like to be in the Europa League but not enough to significantly strengthen the squad this January.

I can’t complin though as i have been very hapy with the players brought in under Mike Ashley. Very flops tbh.

    Perhaps Obertan is a flop.
    Gosling?
    Can’t think of many tbh.

  5. Toonsy, Yeah I agree, Cabella won’t arrive and I very much doubt anyone else will either . As for Remy, I’m bored shitless by the whole saga already, there is no point us or anyone else signing the lad until the rape case is sorted, so what Arry thinks he’s trying to do I don’t know as he’s flogging a dead horse at the moment. I would actually be a bit annoyed if we bought him with that issue outstanding , what we should do however is broker a deal this window that says if the charge is dropped we have first option in the summer at an agreed price, but it won’t happen.

  6. Kim Harry is trying to drum up some funds to spend in the window.
QPR are not in automatic promotion spot. shame. Obviously Harry needs to buy big.

  7. Edible bacon bowls Kimtoon? That does sound tasty. Would it work with Canadian back bacon? I could fill it with poutine (fried chips, cheese curds, and gravy) mmmmm. An instant heart attack.

  8. So is there any truth at all to our transfer rumours? Are we after Cabella or not? I like the sound of him but haven’t seen him play. Can anybody comment who’s seen him in action?

      (Quote)

  9. G2, I’m not sure how good he is as don’t know much about him tbh, apparently he’s a cross between Cabs and Benny if reports are true 🙄 but it could be all hype, and you tube can make anyone good.

  10. It would be nice to know what goes on in the board meetings. How could they look at our squad and think we have enough quality wingers? And our only in form striker is on loan. Does that sound like a deep squad to anybody? And our best CB is injured and probably leaving in summer. It seems nobody else is buying either though.

  11. It would make sense to get him now if the long term plan is to sell Cabaye in the summer as seems likely. Get him acclimatised so he knows his team mates ready for next season when he would be starting in a midfield trio of Tiote and Anita (I would guess?)

But 14 million is quite steep. I think if we get anyone it will be someone pretty unexpected and low key, another haidara type player, maybe a young winger or something. We’ve needed a bit of a clear out for a while now imo, I wouldn’t mind us offloading one or two lads now or at least loaning them out (Obertan, Jonas) so we can get something for them in the summer.

  12. @G2
<<<<<<<<<<<< has seen him play hes a decent prospect but not for 14 million bud

  13. Kimtoon, everyone in that video has now died of heart failure, …but their corpses were all smiling 😆

      (Quote)

  14. well maybe cabaye will go this window, its reported that he has a clause in his contract saying he can buy out the last two years of his contract for £6mill 😯

      (Quote)

  15. At least this time they have been honest at the meeting and said probably no one in. All we need now is the media to stfu linking us to all and sundry. 🙄

      (Quote)

  16. Ice-is it a clause or is it just buying out from the Webster ruling? I think he needs to have been here 3 seasons to do that so summer at the earliest, can’t see it happening anyway and we would be due compensation from the club he joined after that as well as money out of his own pocket.

      (Quote)

  17. @ NEWKIE
if he bought out his contract bud the club he joined would not owes us money 😯 were you geting that from bud

      (Quote)

  18. @ KIMTOON
next time you geting probs with ya pc restart and push f11 should come up reboot to factory settings, will save ya some wonga in the long run

      (Quote)

  19. think there would be a few clubs willing to pay the 6mil for him imo, ways and means to get round owt 😉

      (Quote)

  20. TAE, cheers for that, funny enough I had the PC guy do a remote fix yesterday cause I couldn’t get on any sites yesterday am, he didn’t charge me though as it was a quickie, the repair that is 😉

      (Quote)

  21. Seems to me there’s nothing at all going off with our transfers. Even the rumours are weak. Cabella, Hunt, Fofana all come with wishy washy quotes about maybe in the summer. I also like Spain and Italy. All bollocks.

Meanwhile JFK is working hard to clear out dead wood and failing.

      (Quote)

  22. @ ICEDOG
Money leaves a trail bud when the banks are involved, would not take a smart **** very long to track it back and the club would be in huge trouble

      (Quote)

  23. TAE-Because we signed Jonas in a similar way but still had to pay 7 million even after he had bought out his contract? As I understand it clubs can challenge the ruling, because otherwise plenty of players would do it.

      (Quote)

  24. Toonarmy@39,as i said ways and means mate, they could pay him large signing on fee buy his home ect,ect you get my drift, crooks everywhere 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  25. TAE that wouldnt stop clubs from boing deals they could write it of as a signing on fee no probs.
There is many ways to clean dirty money 😉

      (Quote)

  26. @ NEWKIE
ah i see bud did not know Jonas had bought out his contract

    ICEDOG
yeah i know what ya mean bud 😆

  27. See this for info

    http://www.theguardian.com/sport/2009/may/20/webster-ruling-matuzalem-cas-compensation

We could easily challenge it. Cabs would need to pay out his due wages and we could then sue on other grounds, including value. Depending on what they determine that to be. So if a club like PSG wanted him to come to them and Cabaye wanted them to give him his money, he would need a 18mil signing on fee because of the rate of tax-I believe its still about 75% for top bracket earners? Then they would have to pay us compensation themselves which could easily be 10mil+. And that’s not including an actual signing on fee which Cabaye would want, probably like 3 million or so for he and his agents? Plus higher wages because he is a free agent?….Would be a lot more simple to play ball and try and buy him from us.

Obviously if he goes somewhere in England it would be cheaper but you still pay tax on signing on fees.

      (Quote)

  28. So essentially if Cabaye agreed with a club that they would pay him for buying out his contract, it would cost the club 12 mil because of 50% tax. There are dodgy ways to move money about but if Cabaye pulled this stunt in England the buying club would be heavily investigated I reckon. Then they would have to actually pay us comp and pay him a real signing on fee- can’t see that working out at cheaper than 20mil which is what we’d probably sell him for.

      (Quote)

  29. @ NEWKIE
yeah i nar find eds blog funny as well if you liserned to that blog we would be signing a whole new 1st time plus a spare for each position 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  30. Jermaine Defoe has signed for Toronto FC thats ganna peev flopface off i hear he was intrested in him 😆 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Big Dave,

If we lose players, we’ll still finish above 12th. If we sign a couple we could push top six.

I don’t see us signing anyone and Ashley will be doing his best to push out a big name.

At best I can see a youngster or two signed and we’ll only sign a senior player if they’re free, have a clause that’s half their value or we sell a star for big cash and get a cheap replacement.

<<<<<<<<<<< still think we will sign 2 players this window, the club aint going to say we hope to sign this player or that player, and face the backlash of the fans again if they dont deliver.

      (Quote)

  33. I don’t really see the point in signing anyone. A new striker is needed but lets face it, if we don’t sign anyone we’ll still do ok.

Why spend £10m or £15m if it means we only move up a couple of places?

Some on here think we shouldn’t be challenging for 4th. We’re out of the cups. Europa league would be nice but that would mean we’d have to finish 5th, 6th, 7th maybe.

If nobody on here thinks europe is a realistic target then surely the season is over? Why not wait until the summer?

      (Quote)

  34. @ JJ
is hopeing ya wrong over there 😮 cause im ganna be gutted over here if we dint sign no 1 😥

      (Quote)

  35. @ KK
<<<<<<<<<<< thinks the season is far from over 😯 thats a bit of a silly thing to say bud 😆

      (Quote)

  36. @TAE

It’s not over for me buddy.

I think the club should be challenging for 4th. It’s unlikely we’ll finish 4th but we should challenge the teams that are fighting for 4th.

The season is over for anybody that thinks this club is a midtable club.

We’re not getting relegated & they don’t expect us to be competing for 4th, so the season is over for them.

      (Quote)

  37. KK,
That couple of places could mean the difference between Europa or not.

Can you imagine if we qualified for Europa and Man United didn’t.

A few seasons ago a couple signings could have meant the difference between Champions League or not.

So while we’re in a position to push and clubs like Spurs and Man U are vulnerable. Then surely it makes sense to take the initiative. Take a gamble.

      (Quote)

  38. Even if it didn’t come off. We’d have given the new signings some proper premiership experience. They’d start the next season with that. Debuchy, Coloccini are good examples.

We don’t want to start a new season with inexperienced players.

It would give the current lot an indication of ambition too.

Makes perfect sense to spend now. Especially considering we didn’t spend a penny in the Summer transfer window.

We’d be one of the few top teams in history to not make a single signing throughout an entire season of football. 😯

      (Quote)

  39. @ KK
thank god for that 😀 sounded like you were chucking the towel in over there 😆

      (Quote)

  40. @ KK
<<<<<<<<<<< still thinks we can gate crash the top 4 meself, but would need a quality signing or 2 now in my view, but its no good signing players just to say we signed some1 they got to be players that can knock us up a lvl in my view

      (Quote)

  41. but 1 thing we cant do is go signing players willy nilly like scumberland did they went for numbers instead of quality and is still laughing over here that they signed 14 players and found they had no left back 😆

  43. Tae, I was gonna mention McGeady the other day funny enough but hasn’t he agreed to join the Toffees 😕

      (Quote)

  44. Don’t think he has that big a fan base ,probs cause he played in Scotland previously, but he’s done well in Russia apparently.

      (Quote)

  45. @ KIMTOON
yeah just seen they got a agreement in place but that dont really mean that much til hes signed on the dotted line

      (Quote)

  46. TAE, whats the fee, I read he wouldn’t be that expensive that’s one of the reasons I was gonna bring him up like.

      (Quote)

  47. newcastle closer to his home roots if toon decided to throw there hat in and still rembers we had an agreement with remy 😆

      (Quote)

  48. Tae, yeah it doesn’t look a done deal by any means. But would the player prefer to play under Martinez or Pards I wonder.
