Game On! Newcastle v Sunderland

Game On at St James' Park
Game On at St James’ Park
The 150th competitive Tyne-Wear derby is upon us which means that once again bragging rights are up for grabs.

Those rights have been firmly held on Wearside after back-to-back defeats against the Mackems who go looking for a third successive victory over us for the first time in 91 years.

Yet another miserable transfer window will do nothing to lift the pressure on Alan Pardew. His derby results have been poor since that 1-0 win at the Stadium of Light so he needs a result on that basis, but he also needs one to quell the anger that is rising regarding a lack of transfer activity. I’ll go into more detail on that front in the next few days but at this moment this game is the most important thing and should be the focus of everyone connected to either club.

News of injuries and suspensions for both sides, some stats and facts and a background of the fixture can all be found in the match preview for this game which you can view here if you haven’t already done so. For full team news please see the bottom of this article roughly one hour prior to kick-off.

The match isn’t being shown live here in the UK although it scheduled to be broadcast on a wide range of overseas channels so picking up a stream shouldn’t be too difficult for those who aren’t in the fortunate position of being inside the ground. If you do find a stream please share it and leave a link in the ‘comments’ section below.

I haven’t got that usual derby feeling if I’m being honest. Not yet anyway although I’m pretty sure it will kick in at some point before kick-off. I can’t quite put my finger on why I feel that way, I just do. Maybe a game in midweek along with transfer deadline day (also known simply as Friday in these parts) has kind of ruined the build up?

I guess it doesn’t really matter how I feel now, it’s what happens on the pitch that is most important. At the moment they are the form team of the two but as has been said and demonstrated so many times previously, form is irrelevant on the day.

Howay the lads!

  1. Another win from Brisbane. 7 points clear at the top with a game in hand. The 5th time this season they’ve come back from a goal down to win. If Newcastle had half the fight …

Small consolation in a sad weekend.

  2. KK a Catfish?! 😯

“I like football more than the club”. WTF?.

If you like football more than you like NUFC why the hell did you choose to follow the Toon?! 😯 😆

  3. Brisvegas@520, you really do blow smoke out of your own *** at times,.. 😳

……..”But, no, I’m not going to join the ranks of the drama queens.”…

What a stupid comment mate, especially in the aftermath of a humping from the great unwashed.

  4. it was just a really bad game of football from our lads… not much more than that.. It happens to every team… however, it is much worse when we do it mind you.. much, much worse..

  6. I’d say I’ve been a defender of Pardew on here in the past, but I’m afraid he lost my backing yesterday.
The game itself was dreadful and he is partly responsible for that, but his post match comments were just a joke.
He’s managed the team for 3 years now and with JFKs appointment in the summer, has been able to focus on his squad of player and the formations and tactics he uses them in. To say its back to basics, or that the sale of Cabaye means he needs to find a new system suggests to me he’s a plan A only manager.
What the hell has he and his coaching staff been doing for the last 3 years?.
Forget this Cabaye was sold from under him with no replacement ****, what if Cabaye was still with us but injured? – Ryan Taylor style injured. He’s out long term and we didn’t have £20m to spend!.
He knew Cabayes been wanting to leave for a while now, but he’s built a team with him as its centre piece, and with what looks like no plan B.
Shola hasn’t score ALL season and is out of contract come the end of it. Yet all we bring in is a loanee who hasn’t played in months!. I’d have started De Jong yesterday, coz even with the lack of games he was far more mobile that that useless ****!.
Pardew stood infront of the SS reporter and the words “the better team won” roled off his lips with ease!. No apology to the paying supporter at all!. 3 consecutive derby defeats under his guidance – 1920 since that last happened!.
Pardews answer – back to basics!.
So the last 3 years have been a total waste of time if you’re going back to basics then have they?. Back to basics – how about back to fucking London, taking ya fat mate and drunken mate with you!.

  7. AMF@532, I respect the way you can de-emotionalise (a make up word ?!) sport mate, Mike Ashley would be proud to have you in his ranks… 😳

“What, seriously cuffed at home by our greatest rivals in a really sensitive week for the club.”…

nah, but those drama queens following the toon, they just skweem and skweem because they lost an itty bitty football game. It happens to every team… however, it is much worse when we do it mind you.. much, much worse…..

Our Antipodean WUM-Team are showing there true colurs today 🙂

    Laugh, I almost got the beers in 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆 😆

was it not a poor performance from our lads?.. like I said..
But hey if you want to make it all about you, go for it big fella. you are very important!..

  9. Sharpy17@534, regarding Pardew’s poor interview content, it’s all down to damage limitation really, and primarily for himself, with the players secondary. We have all heard this type of interview from Pardew before where we all think ..wtf have we just saw a different game ?! 😳

When things are going well, Pardew can smooth talk the hind legs off a donkey, in adversity, and yesterday was the culmination of one of the worst weeks we’ve had for a long time..he just ran out of words. Even bearing in mind the fact that the club have kindly banned all media sources which may ask really tough questions, Pardew came up wanting…to be expected really…

  10. AMF@536, don’t disrespect me mate by trying to make it “all about me”. 😳 😳 😳

English is my mother tongue mate, if I have misread your post as NOT a smart pop at toon fans perhaps overreacting to a painful defeat, then I apologise. I presume English is also your first language, and you knew what you were insinuating ?

“however, it is much worse when we do it mind you.. much, much worse..”…

  11. AMF@536, yes you are pretty much spot on there. Yes it was a poor performance from the lads. Well done. 😆 😆 😆 😉

  12. Willo has played so much better alongside MYM / Colo this season, yet Pardoh decides to start with a Taylor/Willo CB pairing. Why ffs ❓
What is the point of Anita ❓
He can’t tackle, can’t shoot, can’t take free kicks or corners.
His sole role seems to be the 5 yard pass. get and give. nothing more.
Benny didn’t have a clue what his role was meant to be either.
I still don’t know where the goals were meant to come from.
Certainly not the goal machine that is Shola.

      (Quote)

  13. So Cabaye left which means we play different, by differently we out shoal up front and **** the ball to him in the hope it sticks. Marv is a ready made replacement brilliant passer of the ball can run at people always finds space, granted defensively he doesn’t offer what Cabaye does but surely pardew can see that when he came on he created numerous opportunities in the space of 20 minutes. Pardew is a balloon. And we will be back to the same when Chelsea comes around. I don’t want to see shoal amoebi playing again, if de jong isn’t fit why not give Armstrong a shot at least he will give some energy. Shoal just wandered round like an idiot. And that effort when he was clean through, he nearly broke his leg trying to shoot with his right foot when he could have used his left. On another note de jong did ok when he came on. Linked up play really well. And made good runs. Think him and Remy will link up really well.

Its just reflex action for an Aussie to make snarly sarcastic remarks. Usually because they don’t have anything better to add to a conversation.

    Don’t take it personally mate.

Most understand the emotions. We don’t all have the Brisbane Roars to make us feel better 😉 🙄

  15. Sharpy @534

Another excellent point. Just goes to prove what I was saying about Pardew being a “now” manager and being to limited to plan or see future complications arising. He’s done ok. But he isn’t and will never be a good enough manger for NUFC in my eyes.

I also think my argument with Solano and Newkie, where I said without Cabaye, or when Pards feels that he is losing the mdifield battle — he reverts to his “plan B” which is long ball to Shola — attempting to negate the midfield.

Well, I hope a few more people see where I was coming from now. Shola equals long ball. The only time it doesn’t is when he plays that deeper lying role, where he goes from useless to slightly better than poor as a player.

So JJ uses a sarcastic comment to have a go at someone making a sarcastic comment.. typical.. tell us how we would of won JJ, I am sure your formation would have won it for us..

  17. Big thing I noticed yesterday was how the team is starting to look like a Sports Direct shop. Discounted stuff spread all over the place with a manager who provides no direction and disillusioned, disinterested staff.
The regime reflected on the pitch.

      (Quote)

  18. Its far too simplistic just to say it was a bad game of football.
    The line up was clueless
There was clearly no game plan
no plan of attack, no plan on the set pieces.
It was like the team was cobbled together 30 mins before kick off.
wtf the coaching staff have been doing beggars belief.
I have to blame Pardum for sending the Lads out without a clue.
No wonder we got over run.
    Pardew is the problem

  19. Georgio@546, The most insightful comment so far imo. that’s exactly how it is mate, brilliant analogy that. 😎

  20. we cannot play the same way against Chelsea and spuds.
Pardew better get a bloody grip, grow up and have a major re think this week.
so he has lost his best player. Whoop di doo.
We do have other players who are more than capable, given the right game plan and instructions.
Some players need to be ditched permanently and others given their chances to step up.
    SORT IT OUT

  21. AMF@540, don’t worry about it mate, if you want to label me a drama queen so be it. 😉 I’ve got you sussed anyway 😉

  22. At 0.2 down I don’t know why he didn’t put Armstrong on, it was obvious to all we weren’t gonna get back in it anytime soon, the lad couldn’t of done any worse that’s for sure. Quite how bad Shola has to get before Pards hooks him off I don’t know, his movement was non existent yesterday and the sitter he missed summed up his entire performance, Shola is undoubtedly a nice guy but his time as a Toon player is gone, he was not the answer yesterday and neither was hoofball which always happens when he plays as the lone striker. How refreshing it would of been if Pards had taken a leap of faith and bloodied Armstrong ( far more mobile ) and would of been a nice curve ball to throw at Gus as I’m sure he wouldn’t have expected Pards to play him. Quite why he put him on the bench if he didn’t intend giving him a run out I don’t know. Once the game was lost 0.2 he should of give the lad the nod, you never know his enthusiasm alone may of made some difference.

      (Quote)

  23. Kim,

Pardew always tries to play it “safe”. His tactics are usually negative. His thinking is negative and this reflects in the team.

He can ride the highs like any manager. When the chips are down. His head drops, his lip drops and this then transfers to his tactics and team morale.

      (Quote)

  24. JJ@543, I just couldn’t understand the jist of two blokes coming on here and giving it the big “drama queen” … ” however, it is much worse when we do it mind you.. much, much worse..”.. line.

Still, that’s what makes the blog what it is, it’s all about opinions 🙂

We don’t need makkems coming on here to gloat when we have them within our own ranks 😆 😆 😆 😆

  25. JJ, you’ll post your formation, you can’t help yourself… most know all are like that.. 🙄

Eminem, you are nowhere near sussing me out mate.. 😉

  26. No Ashley or JFK at the game yesterday I believe, I can’t believe the owner of a PL club doesn’t attend one of the biggest games in the season. It only proves he knows he’s screwed us over yet again and backs up the fact that he simply isn’t interested in his club just what profit it can make him in regards tv cash and free advertising.

      (Quote)

  27. Only positive was that at least DeJong was getting in the right places to score from, even tho his finishing was poor.
I think he will improve if I’m honest. Given some decent service he will score us some goals.
Sammy wasn’t too bad in the first half, but if he was ill then what can you say.
Time to give the young striker a chance me thinks

  28. Just heard an online interview with blokes in the know about european football and they reckon that “no disrespect to Newcastle United” but in the summer Cabella will have his choice of clubs to pick from as he is an excellent player.

The same blokes questioned the toons moves with regard to Grenier…. “of course once the club know that Cabaye is gone then another couple of million are added to the transfer fee”….

It aint fooking rocket science !!

      (Quote)

  29. Eminem… please don’t make it too easy ya drama queen! 😛
just because I don’t chuck an online tantrum, doesn’t mean I not pissed off.. however, in the grand scheme of things we have only dropped 3 points and a heap of pride.. let’s get our **** together and make sure we are up for the next game..

  30. BB, I have a feeling De Jong could link up well with Cisse and would like to see Pards try that first, after all Remy is only a loan unlikely to stay. And we have done zero to convince the lad his future lay here, at least De Jong said ” Hopefully I can do well and maybe stay longer “, not once have I heard Remy say that.

      (Quote)

  31. Kim – not surprised they were missing tbh
They must have known the atmosphere would turn toxic against them
    Assholes

      (Quote)

  32. Kim@553 – not a bad idea. However, Pardew and adventure are two words that don’t mix. I just hope that’s the last time we see Shola in the team. Of all the first eleven, they have 5 goals all season between them. Shola has none, Cisse 1 pen. We haven’t scored at home for so log I can’t remember the last time. Could de Jong be the answer? I’ve no idea but he has better control and more idea of how to play football than Cisse, Shola and Pardew put together.

  33. It’s sad that an owner cannot come along and enjoy his teams Derby but even sadder that he’s the cause of the reason why.

      (Quote)

  34. Kim
I think Pardew has seriously p’d off Cisse.
There is talk of Cisse still trying to get out to a Russian club in this window.

      (Quote)

  35. Please can we get a fairer perspective. Reading most of the posts Shola cost us the game. Was it really Shola’s fault that
    Krul was average
    Debuchy couldn’t be arsed.
    Williamson was gash
    Taylor was Talor
    Santon a disgrace
Anita was brain dead and useless
Tiote tried his best but trying to do his job and two others.
    Ben Arfa was anonymous
    Sissoko played out of position

      (Quote)

  36. Kim there were tactics but woefully the wrong ones. Having seen us totally dominate Norwich with HBA and Sammy running riot down the wings he decides to move Benny to play off Shola and put Sissoko wide leaving Tiote and Anita run off their feet against three. Nobody can play off Shola and Benny just got lost. Pardew is so weird like he has to try something innovative that generally doesn’t work. I want him gone.

      (Quote)

  37. First half we sat deep on the edge of our 18 yard area. They had Altidore up front not Messi. Altidore hasn’t run anywhere all season. Who thought this tactic up?

      (Quote)

  38. Toby – no it wasn’t Sholas fault for any of those things, and I for one certainly don’t him solely responsible for yesterday’s failings.
I don’t hold him responsible for being immobile, slow or left up there alone for long periods of yesterday.
But I do hold him responsible for missing 2 very good chances to score – because ultimately, that’s his job mate, and he doesn’t do it enough.

      (Quote)

  39. Aussie, you aren’t doing a bad job of being a drama queen on this thread mate 😉

You are bitching more about the people venting their emotions about the game than we are actually bitching about the game. 😆 😆 😆

    Calm down princess!

      (Quote)

  40. Might be an over reaction but does anybody think we are standing on the edge of a precipice?
We are a club without unity.
The owner hates the fans. The fans hate the owner.
The director of football does nothing.
The manager divides opinion with probably more against him than for him.
We don’t own our best player
Good players want to come for experience and exposure and then move on at the first opportunity
The structure is unsafe and I can possibly see a relegation in the next three or four seasons.

      (Quote)

  41. A good source of mine told me a couple of weeks ago the Krul will be off in the summer.

      (Quote)

  42. The players attitude yesterday pretty much summed up that of the club; Not really arsed as were practically assured of the pre season top half target.

A sleazy barbary ape and his relegation battlers have managed to break all kinds of near 100 year records and nobody at the club seem remotely bothered.

On the whole its been a good season, But the last few days have pretty much have honestly made me think what is the point and i only go to half a dozen matches a season. People should think long and hard about renewing season tickets and buying the inevitable new home kit in august…

      (Quote)

  43. Toby – I agree, to a point. I’m all for having a plan B or having players in the ranks that allow us vary our style.
Played in the same side as Remy and Gouffran, Shola can do a job because in Remy and Gouffran he has players who would run off him and try to get in behind. Shola will never be ya 20 goals a season forward, but with the right players in the right system he can do a job.
But yesterday there was only really Sammy who played that way, and with all his potential, he’s nee Remy.
We have been left with players like Benny, Marveaux, Anita, Tiote, Sissoko – all midfielders who want the play infront of them. They are either looking to play the ball through, or go on runs with the ball at their feet.

      (Quote)

  44. AMF@561, don’t worry about it mate, you and your Aussie sidekick can’t be expected to understand the emotions involved in a Tyne Wear derby… you’re better off enjoying your Sunday with your Brisbane Roar and Kylie Dvd’s 🙂 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  45. JJ stop picking on Aussie Mag, he’s just misunderstood. He really does care just as much as you and me about Brisbane Roar and the Toon… 😆

      (Quote)

  46. At least one positive from yesterday is that Sholas chances of getting a new contract now are as likely as Ashley getting the freedom of the city. His talent expired in 2007 when they delayed his hip op but he has still managed to turn it on against Sunderland, Impact as a sub or as a non scoring foil for other superior strikers.

He does none of the above any more; He joins the bomb squad of Jonas, Marveaux, Obertan, Gosling, Ferguson, Vuckic, Tavernier and the ludicrously handled Cisse leaving at the end of the season…

      (Quote)

  47. Shola should be in league one, showing off his stuff to the league one players. Bet they’d be thinking I wish I was as good as Shola.

      (Quote)

  48. Stem@590, he’ll probably be in Brazil strutting his stuff 😆 😆 😳

Shola could and should have had at least 2 goals yesterday.

      (Quote)

  49. If Shola has a good world cup in Brazil then all the top team’s will be chasing his signature. Best offer him a new contract Ashley before he walks for free. Every toon fan would cry there hearts out losing Shola for free.

      (Quote)

  50. Please Mr Ashley offer Shola a new contract before it’s to late. It was bad enough for me losing Xisco, Owen and now Shola.

      (Quote)

  51. well we all got troubles van the man wants to go back to the gunners, seems players are very fickle as well 🙄

      (Quote)

  52. As much as I rate Abeid and Amalfitano and if they were in midfield yesterday we would easily have beaten Sunderland. Shola would be an inspiration to play along side. He would carry them to victory and that’s why Mr Ashley has to hand him a 3 year contract ?

      (Quote)

  53. Offer Shola a 5 year contract. Show your ambition Mr Ashley. Fan’s would never doubt your ambition ever again.

      (Quote)

  54. Joe Kinnear would find it difficult finding a better replacement than Shola. Clubs want to much money. 18 million or something like that but Ashley will haggle and get them for 8.
