Game On! Newcastle v Crystal Palace

Game On at SJP
Game On at SJP
Good day everyone and welcome to this article which will take us through the visit of Crystal Palace this afternoon.

Alan Pardew serves the second of his three game stadium ban so it will be John Carver who is tasked with trying to get us a victory following the disappointing defeat to Fulham last weekend.

For Palace it’s a second consecutive away fixture in the North-East following their 0-0 draw at Sunderland last weekend. Currently perched just above the drop zone Tony Pulis will be looking for a similar result or perhaps even better this time around as he attempts to keep his side clear of relegation.

Early injury news, a history of the fixture detailing the head-to-head record with a few facts and stats thrown in can be found in the match preview which is online here.

The game, as with all Saturday 3pm kick-offs, is not being broadcast live here in the UK although some overseas channels have the game listed for transmission so those not at the game will be relying on streams to watch the game. Have a look in the ‘comments’ below because there is usually a few links to watch the match posted in there somewhere.

Team news will be published below as soon as I can possibly get round to it.

On the surface this should be a home banker but it never works out that way with United. Take no notice of league positions as they don’t really matter. Palace and Pulis will make a game of this and we’ll have to be at our best to beat them.

Howay the lads!

  1. Good positive interview from Cisse:
    http://www.teamtalk.com/newcastle-united/9227463/Premier-League-Newcastle-striker-Papiss-Cisse-dedicates-his-winner-to-Alan-Pardew
He acknowledges that he has been missing chances but seems pretty determined to find form.
And another player that supports/respects Pardew – despite having been dropped for a period of time (for Shola 😯 ).
Player relationships has to be one of the major reasons why Pardew is the best manager under Ashley.

  2. Kim 🙂 not at all! That doesn’t stop them from being old c*nts tho! 😆

  3. Kimmy@226, AMF is part of the Prawn sarney brought up on Sky TV brigade 😆 😆 be gentle with him 😆 😆

If you haven’t had the back of your sta-press two tone trousers pinkled on in the old Gallowgate corner, then you don’t know what following the toon is all about 😆 😆 😆

  4. AMF@224, hey, less of the “sentimental” bit. I thought Bris was a mate of yours 😆 😆

  5. AMF@235, it wasn’t my incontinence mate, rather the “incontinence” of the fuelled up Geordies in the Strawberry Corner who made the biggest contribution. I was busy with my notepad, taking note of team formations, tactical changes, movements off the ball etc. I was actually the junior Mourinho of the early 80’s 🙂 😎

  6. Kimmy@234, you didn’t miss nowt there mate. From what I recall, in those days, from a toon home crowd of perhaps 35,000 you would have 3 lasses in that group. Things have changed a lot since then 🙂

  7. MM…Of course it was me who pissed in your pockets, so did everyone else because you had nae chance of getting your hands wet with pockets that deep and arms that short 😆
At Peterboro it took ages to find wor lass again after I’d been for a ****, another added bonus to standing

  8. RT@238, canny tactic that mate, gannin for a jimmy riddle just before kick off, then finding your lass again just as the game had ended 🙂 Means you could keep all the Dickmans pies, bovril and mcKewans lager to yersel. She probably rumbled your tactic though after a couple of away games 😆 😉

  9. It was a better performance yesterday but it was still nowhere near our best.

This was Crystal Palace & the fact that they could have walked away with a point with us dropping 2 is not good enough.

For some reason we don’t seem to learn.

Why play Shola if he’s not going to be here next season? If he is going to be here next season then give him a contract!

We started a home game with 3 attacking players (Gouffran, De Jong & Cisse) 🙄

We have nothing to fear & nothing to lose yet we still play the usual Pardew/Carver tactic of keeping it tight until 60mins, bring on a game changer, throw Shola on & try to nick a goal before the end.

We had HBA & Marv on the bench but for some reason we think Tiote & Anita in the middle is enough.

The game plan was to hoof it bypassing the midfield or alternatively get the ball outwide to get some crosses as though we’re still in the 90’s.

We need to be playing 3 in the middle & at least one of those 3 needs to be a creative mid

  10. KK@242 …..

Didn’t you notice Palace sitting deep on the edge of the box with two banks of 5 defending there goal, proving exceptionally difficult to break down ? 😯

“Why play Shola if he’s not going to be here next season? If he is going to be here next season then give him a contract!” Why NOT play him, he is a contracted player at the toon 🙄

“We have nothing to fear & nothing to lose yet we still play the usual Pardew/Carver tactic of keeping it tight until 60mins, bring on a game changer, throw Shola on & try to nick a goal before the end.”…. Why not keep it tight ? (although we did at times)… We did try to score before then of course, we just weren’t good enough..

“The game plan was to hoof it bypassing the midfield “….. I couldn’t disagree more, we didn’t play hoof-ball yesterday, we tried to play football through the team, retaining posession…

We have creative talent in HBA and he came on to help change the flow of the game. Johnny C got the timing of his substitutes spot on.

    Apart from that I agree 100% 😆 😆 😆

  11. My MOTM yesterday was Tiote.

I honestly thought he was class yesterday. Not just his performance but his attitude. He had a couple of long (ish) range shots in the first 5 mins which basically said to the rest of the team ‘we play to win today’. Last week against Fulham it was truely boring and there was no urgency to score. But Tiote drove us forward and the other players followed.

For Cisse. Yes he should have got more than just one goal yesterday. Yes he had easier chances. But he took his header really well and actually didnt seem to know what to do when he scored. Is he worth another season? – well maybe give him the remaining games of the season to prove himself.
Remy has been seen meeting Arsenal so he ain’t stopping. Play Cisse and have Remy on the bench for me now.

Re Benny. If he played that way every game he’d be the first name on my teamsheet every week. He played with his head up yesterday and looked to play others in which is exactly what we need. Yes he may bag himself a wonder goal when he gets his head down and beats players, but for me he is a better player when he looks up and passes the ball. Our Courtinho if you like.

      (Quote)

  12. Sharples@244, I loved the way Tiote caressed Cisse’s head at the end of the game, as if to say well done son. I loved the way Anita fell to the floor in frustration when Cisse missed the sitter / pull back from Mbwia…
The signs of a great team spirit.

p.s. I also loved the way Carver jumped around like a radgie at the end. Having said that, we had only beaten bottom club Crystal Palace, perhaps he isn’t up to handling the pressure of being a Geordie lad AND head coach 😆 😆 😆 😆

      (Quote)

  13. SHARPY I think cissie started to look like the old cissie and hope he can go on from there,I don’t like all this cissie bashing its a team game and to be fair the team has been **** of late so let’s blame him,yes he’s been badly off form all strikers go thought it,even the best strikers in the PL miss chances all the time nobody can name me a striker that converts every chance he gets,go back to when shearer was **** and dropped did that make him a bad striker,no it was the way he was mangaged and tactics used,so maybe there is something in that

      (Quote)

  14. Ice – it’s amazing what one goal can do mate. Can you imagine if he hadn’t scored yesterday after the chances he’d had?.
I agree, it’s a team thing but to be fair mate they have created the chances for him. I think Pardew and the coaches have been very patient with him and it shows when he himself dedicated the goal and win to Pardew.
I don’t believe his poor form has been through lack of effort. Pardew has never made mention of his efforts on the training ground – as he has with Marv and Benny.
As Shearer and Carver said on MOTD last night, Cisse has never hid. He’s continued to make the runs and get into the positions – but his confidence has been rock bottom.

I’d love to see the lad go on a scoring run. I think on form he’s a £15m CF already in the squad that will be well short of CFs come next season.

      (Quote)

  15. @MM

I did see Palace sitting deep – it was expected.

If we expected Palace to park the bus & be difficult to breakdown before the game why did we only have Tiote & Anita in the middle when we know that they do not have the same creativity to unlock a team as Cabaye, HBA or Marv?

The Shola comment is in reference to building & improving the squad. If he’s going to be at the club in 6 months then it makes sense to play him.

If we were desperately in need of what he offers then it makes sense to play him.

If we didn’t need to play him yesterday & he’s not needed in 6 months then it’s a waste of substitution.

I have nothing against Shola & the comment also applies to players like Marv (who had something to offer yesterday) & Gosling.

We don’t need to wait until the last day of the summer transfer window to see who stays or goes – we need to be proactive & have the same players playing the same style under the same manager.

  20. Can someone please enlighten me around the ffp rules that govern football clubs these days.
If a new mega rich arab came riding in on his white horse and paid off fatty with his loose change, could he then splash his own cash to make stadium improvements, like Troy is dreaming about ❓
Doesn’t everything have to go through the books these days ❓
Thereby plunging the club into serious debt.
Isn’t this why manc city had to dream up the Etihad sponsorship bull ****.
I thought the days of the rich owner splashing the cash were over.
Please someone put me right on this, before I jump all over Troys fantasies.

  21. KK – I understand your frustration mate. I’ve posted regularly this season that there is simply not enough creativity in our team.
However that said, I don’t have a problem with the cautious approach.
This is a league where any team can beat another. Arsenal are one of the most creative teams in the league, yet they were torn apart by Chelsea in the 1st 15mins of yesterday’s game, and it’s not the first time this season either.
We need to be more offensive, particularly at home. But we also need to be careful, and players like Benny or Marv offer little defensive support.

  23. BB, I Don’t think there is a problem with buying and extending grounds ,but I think you have to justify wages and transfer fees from incoming income like sponsorship, tv deals , merch and gate receipts and what have you. But as owner of a club it’s yours to pay what you want to buy it and if needs be extend as far as I’m aware. 😕

  24. Ice , I did but without paracetamol it goes up again 🙁 . He puked up in the bath last night too poor thing. GP couldn’t find anything obvious wrong but agreed he ain’t right like. He has covering anti b’s in case it’s an ear infection as he couldn’t see clear enough in his ear and he’s slept a lot and been grinding his teeth 👿 . I’m getting someone from day centre to sit with him tomorrow morning as I have to take me dad to hospital for an appointment which has already been cancelled twice and which I don’t want to cancel again.
Lew has a barium meal booked for weds and I have blood clinic in the pm too, don’t wanna miss that as had a disturbing letter from blood docs arrive yesterday which I’m anxious to get sorted. They say I have tested positive to HEP2 ,that’s not hepatitis that was negative, rather HEP2 is a cancer cell 😯 , they are retesting sample and testing for Lupus too. Not quite sure if they found HEP2 cells in my blood or they mixed my blood with Hep2 cells to see how it reacts in an anti immunity way as a diagnostic tool if you like . All about as clear as piggin mud mate tbh and not a little bit worrying.

  25. Thanks Kim
I’ll leave Troys fantasies alone then 😛
The safe standing thing is very interesting and cheaper to implement than a ground extension, so maybe more likely to happen.
Glad to see Cisse finally get a goal, and a cracking header it was too.
Would love to see him push on from here and put this past years ‘mare behind him, but I’m not convinced just yet. He has to start scoring the easy ones now too.

  26. Watching Stoke and Villa. That Pieters fella looks decent. Wish we had gotten him now. Don’t know what’s going to happen to Santon. Why he’s been played on the left side is beyond me as he can’t cross with his left foot and everyone knows he has to cut inside onto his right foot.

      (Quote)

  27. G2, Yeah mate, I should get a clearer pic on it on Wednesday. Tried to research HEP2 yesterday but all wiki says is it’s a cancer cell first identified in a laryngeal tumour cell and it’s used to identify auto immune disorders. 😕 , the fact I tested positive for it is confusing as I’m not sure they found the cells in my blood or mixed my blood with a HEP2 cell to see if I have an auto immune disorder or cancer . 🙄
Lew, could maybe just have a virus, also nt good news for me as my immune system is currently ****** due to the high dose ******** I’m on 🙁

      (Quote)

  28. I think he did have an ankle injury but it didn’t stop Stoke from getting him and he’s looking good now. As for HEP2 I don’t know much about it but I can ask a few friends who are more in the know lass.

  29. Ice ,G2 ,cheers lads . Yep , if Hoddle was right and you get karma for pass sins ,I must of been one big ******* 😆

  30. Where is Xisco playing now? Just think, if we don’t get Cabella and Grenier in the summer we could possible have Ranger and Xisco up front for much less money! I’ll mention it to Mike during our next tete a tete. 😆

      (Quote)

  31. Mike has let me know he only has a budget of 150 quid for the summer.I feel we can get Ranger from Swindon for some hair gel and some budgie feathers. I’ll provide the budgie feathers Mike. 😆

  32. No really Kimtoon lass that would be a very affordable strike pair! Mike is looking into it now. Our worries are over. 😆

  33. g2 ,Odd that Stoke took Pieters with the bad ankle injury when they wouldn’t entertain Ba’s time bomb knee like.

      (Quote)

  34. A lot of you are worried about Mike underspending this summer. But what happens if he goes wild and overspends? Say he gets beyond 200 pounds. Anything could happen. We could end up with a midfield of Larry the Cable Guy and Pierce Hawthorne. 😯

      (Quote)

  35. G2, Pieters is one of those players that we “chased” for three years, apparently he visited SJP to watch his best mate Krul, then … 🙁 nowt. He was a Bosman freebee too from what I recall 👿 👿

  36. As Official Blog Hobbit I must demand more respect from you all for Mike Smalls. He is our leader after all. He’s got sex appeal. He’s got pizzazz (did I spell that right?). He is deeply spiritual. He wears stretchy pants. What more can I say?

  37. I’m gnashing my teeth at this very moment Munich mate! Why do we always screw transfers up? We’ll probably screw up this summer with Grenier and Cabella as well and they’ve already attracted too much attention from other clubs. Mike will pull out when he realizes it’s actually going to cost real money for them. 👿

      (Quote)

  38. MM, cheers mate, I’m not gonna fret too much until I have too, I will know more weds hopefully.

G2, Hopefully without JFK on the scene things will be a bit smoother now, it all depends on mike getting the right finance guy in on the job really, oh and hopefully he can pronounce the players names right 😉

      (Quote)

  39. I’m worried that for Mike Smalls the right finance guy would be somebody who won’t spend a penny! It’s like looking into the shop window from the outside without a penny in your pocket. 🙁

  40. Stoke are beating Villa easily. Villa are an odd team. They beat Chelsea on week and then lose to Stoke at home? It’s 1-4 now!

  42. It’s all well and good going on about buying good players in the summer mates but you don’t seem to understand Mike’s problems. His nipples are all stretched out and sore from the nipple clamps, he’s got a bad case of brewer’s droop and his left eyelid is starting to twitch badly when he reads this blog. So show a little sympathy!

  43. Ice, tbf that’s a fair asking price in todays market, he’s worth that when you think what we sold Carroll for and he will only increase in value imo. Freddie Shep would of paid that no probs ,not so sure about Jabba though 🙄 He’ll be snapped up at that price though.

  44. I just want to add that I find the whole lack of enthusiasm about the respectful comments quite shocking! I mean really mates. I’m terribly disappointed in you all. 😥

  45. G2@285, Stoke seem to be putting something good together. I thought they were battering us at SJP until they had 2 blokes sent off. They are a good footballing side at the moment, and we’ll have our hands full going to the Potteries in a couple of weeks…

      (Quote)

  46. Actually, no matter how much it grates, average players cost 6 – 8 million these days. The sooner the owners get there heads round that the better. It stands to reason that if Sky et al are hoying insane amounts of money at football, then the players and clubs want to have some of that. You get nowt for 5 mill these days…
De Jong is a 5 mill striker, and not a very good one. BMG must be gnashing there teeth having paid so much money for him, whilst Swansea got a real good cloggy striker in Boney for probably the same price…
