Newcastle v Everton – Premier League match preview

Newcastle v Everton Just two days after seeing off Crystal Palace, United entertain Everton in a rescheduled Premier League encounter.

Alan Pardew completes his three game stadium ban so once again it will be John Carver in the dugout going toe-to-toe against Roberto Martinez.

Everton have been going well in the league and find themselves sitting in sixth position occupying what is the final space for European qualification this season. Ideally placed to pip Manchester United to that spot and perhaps mount a late charge for a Champions League place, Martinez’s men will be looking for another three points at St James’ Park.

For United it seems as though this is a dead rubber. With only an outside chance of qualifying for Europe it seems the biggest issue facing Newcastle is whether we finish above or below Southampton. However a win would put us within five points of Everton so perhaps there might be something to aim for after all.

Newcastle:

Loic Remy and Mathieu Debuchy are both missing once more as is Davide Santon who has been rules out despite closing in on a return. Ryan Taylor remains injured long-term.

Everton:

Steven Pienaar, Lacina Traore, Arouna Kone, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo are all out of action for the Toffees although Phil Jagielka could be set for a return after being declared “medically fully fit” by Roberto Martinez.

Previously…

United lost the reverse fixture at Goodison Park 3-2 earlier on in the season and our recent record against Everton is not good. We haven’t won any of the last four matches – a run that stretches back to November 2011.

This is a fixture that very much favours the home side historically with 80 matches played on Tyneside and United winning 43 of them compared to only 18 victories for Everton.

However their superior record at Goodison Park means that overall the head-to-head is very close indeed. A total of 162 matches have been played to date with United winning 66, Everton winning 62 and 35 draws making up the rest.

Stats and facts…

This fixture has produced 17 penalties – the joint highest of any other fixture in the history of the Premier League.

United have scored four goals beyond the 90-minute mark this season – beaten only by Manchester City who have found the net six times at the death.

Leighton Baines has scored all 12 penalties he has taken in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku has averaged a goal a game against us.

Final thought…

The win against Palace on Saturday wasn’t pretty but it was welcome all the same. Everton will present a different problem as they need the points for different reasons and, with the greatest of respect, are better than Crystal Palace so Roberto Martinez might well instruct his team to come and have a bit more of a go at us than Tony Pulis did.

Everton are a good side and we’re at the stage of the season now where the table doesn’t lie, but they have been vulnerable on the road as of late. It’s going to come down to who performs best on the day.

Finally a note about the referee. It’s Mike Jones. Some of you probably haven’t a clue who he is but just to refresh your minds he was the guy who chalked off Cheik Tiote’s long-range strike against Manchester City not so long back so don’t expect any favours from the Chester-based official.

Howay the lads!

  1. Thanks Toonsy . Yep Dave me too, a draw would be a good result ,the Toffees are having a pretty good season tbf.

  2. I don’t do forecasts it comes back and bites your ***,I do worry how we handle the big lump of a c/f like, all 17mil of him lol

      (Quote)

  3. I posted a team for Palace and someone offered an alternative (sorry I can remember who) full of the young Geordie lads.
I would go with that coz I don’t expect to win this one. Give the likes of Sammy and Armaz a decent run out.

      (Quote)

  4. Sharpy , Sammy has picked up a further injury mate, it was up on Newsnow so he defo won’t play.

      (Quote)

  5. 12 fecking penalties 👿 ffs
How many penalties have we had this season ❓
This is what I mean about consistency of refereeing.
I seriously hope Tayls isn’t in the line up tomorrow, or that could well be 13.
I hope Everton do come and attack us, we are well capable of counter attack play and should get something out of this game.

  6. KIM I dread to think of the storeys on the transfer front ins/outs this summer,IMO it did not help pardew opening his trap and saying we had a nice kitty, even if we have doesn’t say jabba will spend it,I think any incomings will have to depend on out-goings,the greedy git

      (Quote)

  7. Ice , True enough mate, everyone knows we got the Cabs money plus some 🙄 I expect us to get royally effed on the pricetag front, trouble is Jabba won’t be held to ransom so we’ll either go without or end up loaning again.

      (Quote)

  8. That was Cisse’s 4th stoppage time winner in 12 months , so that’s 4 games he’s won us 😎 😎

      (Quote)

  9. Good stats today Kimtoon lass. Had to go off earlier as I kept getting some kind of web attacks. Still looking forward to the match even though I can’t see how we would win it! 😐

      (Quote)

  10. Thanks for the article by the way Toonsy. You keep getting better and better at writing them.

      (Quote)

  11. I have to admit I was quite taken in by Swansea’s early season start. They have fallen a long way and I don’t think sacking the manager helped them either. I don’t see them being relegated but what a poor second half of the season they’re having.

      (Quote)

  12. I think Ashley might like to reshape the squad to look more like himself. Get some more players on the meat pies in the summer. We’ve made a good start with Jonas and Benny but more players need to really work on their waistlines if we are to look more like Mike! Harrumph!

      (Quote)

  13. As Official Blog Hobbit I try to address all these current concerns you have expressed to me. Will Mike overspend in the summer? Are the squad getting enough to eat? Will the new teapot seriously dent our summer window budget? Why is Mike’s left eyelid twitching again when he comes on here? All important questions and I will do my best to answer them mates!

      (Quote)

  14. I just want to reassure you all that I take my Blog Hobbit duties very seriously. I respect all your opinions (even Sharpy’s 😆 ) and I know you are all depending on me to get to the bottom of a lot of the goings on at the club. Have no fear mates. My eyes and ears are everywhere. 😈

      (Quote)

  15. I didn’t even know there was a match until I went online today, I’ve just been so disinterested lately. The irony is, we are actually in a decent position in the table yet I can’t help but feel like the club could be so much better. Perhaps if they were slightly unfortunate last season (although Ashley didn’t invest until Jan) they have been a bit lucky with the league position this season. (Although zero ambition in cups and many other teams struggling has probably flattered the league position a tad). Next season with good investment we should be able to aim for the likes of Man U, Everton and Tottenham but we all know what will happen. Key players will be replaced by bargain basement buys. Maybe I’m too pessimistic, I should just enjoy the top half of the Premier League while it lasts! I do understand the folks who say we have been an average club for 95% of the time, but it’s still sad to stand and watch the club just ticking over, when just moderate investment could see entertaining football.

      (Quote)

  16. Looking at Sunderland’s next 6 fixtures has cheered me up.. 🙂 Liverpool, Wet spam, then Tottenham, Everton, Man City & Chelsea. 😮 All of a sudden those two games in hand don’t look so promising. 😆

      (Quote)

  17. think everton will be to strong for us like, but you never know .but il still sit and watch it,thats the price i pay for being a geordie. 😛

      (Quote)

  18. Everton are having a reasonable season in a poor Premier league, no more no less. They haven’t won on the road(in the league) since December and even their last 4 home games have just been wins by the odd goal v teams from the bottom half of the table, that said we’ve been pretty pants of late but Cisse’s going to go on a 2 game scoring streak so a Toon win, trust me what could possibly go wrong?!!

      (Quote)

  19. Geordie Two – you cheeky get!. Maybe it would be better for everyone if you buggered off and supported Athletico Bilbo instead!. I think you’d fit right in 😛 😉

I would like at least 2 known signing in the summer – Siem De Jong and Lukaku would be dreamland.
But equally, if I’ve never heard of them I’m prepared to give them a chance coz I hadn’t really heard of Tiote, Cabaye or Cisse before they signed either.

What worries me though is that there is already stories of Jenkinson and Zouma in on loan – that to me isn’t signings and isn’t strengthening or re shaping a squad.

      (Quote)

  20. I can see blunderland not getting any more points this season.
They are doomed to relegation and they know it now too.
Funny how they have all disappeared under their stones once again.
    I’m loving it.
    😆

      (Quote)

  21. BB…I feckin hope so mate, if we’d just drawn both derby games they’d be dead and buried already or as good as 👿

      (Quote)

  22. Sharpy – I think we will get a mix of both.
    But not Le Cuckoo unfortunately.
It doesn’t look like De Jong has what it takes either, so we will probably get him for a song too.
    Nice work cashley.
we will get one of those French midfielders too, even though we could do with both.
CB’s will be our on going Achilles heel. Hopefully we can find some mug to buy Tayls, and the pressure will be on to find a cheap replacement.
    meh ❗

      (Quote)

  23. Kim…They’d be right thick sad barstewards if they wouldn’t…so probably not 😆

      (Quote)

  24. Sharpy@25, I don’t see the point of loaning Jenkinson and Zouma , For the money loans cost nowadays and wages why not just use that cash to get one half decent permanent signing in 😕 It also makes us look like a cheapskate bunch who can’t afford to buy players which is clearly untrue. The fat man is a miserly **** and he needs to put his hands in them deep pockets of his pronto imo. C’mon Mike show a bit of ambition for something other than SD.

      (Quote)

  25. If anything it makes the derby defeats all the more gaulling if I’m honest.
They really are a **** team. But Pardew has a lot to learn about how to approach these matches.
Them getting relegated will remove the problem for a few years, so fingers crossed eh. 😛

      (Quote)

  26. Richie, Aye spot on mate, that’s what a diet of cheesy chips does for your brain sadly, not to mention make you delusional about prospects for the club at the start of every season 😆 😳

      (Quote)

  27. Aussie, Just seen that wonder goal being scored by the Melbourne Heart player Engelaar ,ala Rooney/Becks , on BBC sport news clip , Wow what a beauty that was. 😎

      (Quote)

  28. I’m hoping we could surprise a few tonight by winning this one. If Cisse has a bit confidence and Ben Arfa comes back with a point to prove I think we might just give them a game and come out with all 3 points.

      (Quote)

  29. Looking forward to the summer….it’s going to be massive which ever way you look at it even on the front of players out…

    CB: S Taylor
    LB: D Santon
    CM: D Gosling
    RM: G Obertan
    LM: J Gutierrez
    LM: S Marveaux
    ST: L Remy
    ST: L De Jong
    ST: S Ameobi

That’s a lot of first team players out the door and that’s before we assess Vuckic and Ferguson etc….

I’d like to see us look at at least a few players from the premiership as replacements. Maybe send Taylor to Cardiff in Part ex for Caulker? I’d also like to see us go in for Holtby I think he has looked good at Fulham and at 22 will only get better….plus we need a true number 10

      (Quote)

  30. So the club have finally confirmed the Academy has been granted category 1 status

      (Quote)

  31. I have put Santon in there because I think he will struggle to regain his spot. Dummett has done well at left back but I think it’s only a short time before we see Haidara announce himself as number 1 left back.

      (Quote)

  32. I would also like to see us move for young English talent in the form of Tomas Ince and Saido Berahino I think both would be good buys.

      (Quote)

  33. Oblong, I think someone posted that Holtby has agreed to go to Fulham last Thursday mate. Amazing but true 😯 . 🙁

Re, Dummett, yep he’s done ok but his crossing is cack so far . I want us to bring in a decent winger who can actually cross a ball to a decent level 🙄 and someone who can take a decent free kick would help somewhat too. Can’t believe how many corners we have wasted this season or last come to that. Every time we win a corner I never get excited as I know nowts gonna come of it.

      (Quote)

  34. Hopefully Raylor will come back as good as his old self next season but I do worry that his injury has done for him long term like. 🙁

      (Quote)

  35. Surely Holtby will only sign for Fulham if they stay up though??

Our set pieces are woeful and have been since Barton left to be fair. Raylor takes a decent free kick but we need someone who will play the 90 mins on most occasions to step up.

We are desperate for decent creative wingers. Our front line has been starved of decent service from out wide for far too long.

I only see Dummett as Haidara’s long term under study to be honest. Hopefully they can push each other onto the next level.

      (Quote)

  36. Oblong , It’s mental if he ends up with them like , I really can’t get my head round that one . Can only assume they are throwing shed loads of wages at him, or maybe it’s conditional agreement on them staying up like. 😕

Agree too ,say what you will about Joey and Nolan with them in the team we always had chances from corners and set play.

      (Quote)

  37. The new hope is that sunlun win their last three home games against Cardiff, West brom and Swansea and save themselves.

Id argue that they could well be out of contention by the time those fixtures come round anyway the daft kernts

    2-1 tonight Cisse and Gouffran

      (Quote)

  38. Boots – yeah Lukaku is wishful thinking on my part – but if he pulled it off then Ashley would win back some major brownie points like.
The papers reckon our main target is Cabella, but I think that could be a **** on with that French chairman fella. I’d rather have Siem De Jong or Grenier first anyway personally.

Kim – I completely agree. I reckon the money it would cost to loan Zouma, we could buy Boyata or Lascelles. Or Kaboul is a free transfer summer. Loan deals should be consider when all other options have been exhausted – not being put into place 2-3 months before the window even opens.
I think Sam Byram would cost the money it would take to loan Jenkinson as well.
Do loans make up the 25 man squad as well or can you have them in addition to?.

Oblong – I’d love us to sign Tom Ince, and I’ve been very impressed with Jordan Mutch at Cardiff as well. But there is talk of Ravel Morrison who is a young English player – would you be happy with him mate?

      (Quote)

  39. Breaking news day today:

Academy given cat 1 status and Armstrong, Woodman and Satko signed first pro contract.

Wonder if next will be about a new owner?

      (Quote)

  40. CC, think the Scum are doomed meself but it’s a pity we don’t get to get revenge in the derby if they drop like. Just have to hope we meet them in a cup comp like 😉

      (Quote)

  41. Jordan Mutch looks a good little player but I think he would look lost in a bigger team. He might prove me wrong though.

Ravel Morrison is an undoubtedly massive talent but he knows it and has a touch of the Nile Ranger’s about him. He might end up being another liability I’m unsure we need the hassle.

    Kim

Holtby is apparently on 70k a week and the deal is a 8mil loan to buy providing they stay up. If we could get him for 6mil I think he would be a steal!

Also never mind these Jenkins rumours if Debuchy is going I want Richards from city.

Could you imagine a back line of

    Richards–Caulker–Colocini–Haidara

Caulker is the type of player we need. Natural leader and has the presence to finally take over from Colo after a season playing together.

      (Quote)

  42. Stu – that’s great news about the academy mate. I know Ashley has many many faults, but his investment in the youth policy is a major bonus for me. Those 3 young lads have impressed me as well, and is the future spine of the team for me.

Oblong – my thoughts exactly on Morrison as well mate. If we could buy the player not the person then I’d take him tomorrow.
If we could get Mutch at a decent price I’d happily take the chance on him. He’s head and shoulder above Gosling or Obertan.

I’m a big fan of Caulker mate, but having bought him for £8m, I reckon Cardiff may want big money for him.
I expected Man Utd to go for him to be honest, they will loose Rio and Vidic at the end of the season and Caulker is better than Jones and Smalling IMO.
Would love for us to get him though. However Lascelles at Forest wouldn’t be a bad back up plan. Similar character but about 2-3 seasons behind him in terms of development

      (Quote)

  43. I think the fact that they have Lukaku playing and we don’t have Remy will be the telling difference. Everton just have those type of players that always seem to cause trouble for our defenders, equally they know have a powerhouse in Lukaku. Would like Haidara to start as think he’s a little quicker and stronger than Dummett but I guess it makes sense for as little changes as possible.

      (Quote)

  44. Stu – The Wonga deal came with investment into the youth system. They are developing the training facilities which will benefit the young players as well. They are scouting for young local talent and with players like Dummett, Armstrong, Sammy, Campbell and Alnwick all coming through the ranks – and players like Good, Streete and Aarons making good progress – it’s a long time since we have seen this type of development at the club.

      (Quote)

  45. Hey Sharpy – just seen your dig at me from yesterday. The first q was a typo and the second a laugh. When I mentioned sectioned I didn’t mean you but Pardew! And yes I stand by what I said about deJong. I think he is really poor. Everyone was fooled by Cisse’s first spell and I always thought Colo would come good. Don’t know why I’m bothering with this – you’ve probably forgotten it and it’s boring for everyone else 🙁

    Richards and Lukaku – dreamland. I’d love it but . . .

      (Quote)

  46. So it’s the sponsor’s that are investing, not the owner? The owner hasn’t invested one penny into this football club to improve it on the pitch where it’s important.

Every penny he has put in personally has been to cover up his **** ups.

      (Quote)

  47. Georgio – maybe you read it the wrong way mate, but it wasnt written as a ‘dig’ – I don’t get into that type of ****. It was a genuine question, and if you don’t rate De Jong then that’s entirely your right mate. I personally don’t think we’ve seen all he has to offer yet – but equally, I don’t think when we do that we’ll see him light the league up either. I think he could do us a job but isn’t the 15-20 goals a season we need next season.

      (Quote)

  48. Stu – the owner will have signed off on the Wonga deal. But he has also invested money on bringing Bigi, Kemen, Mbabu and Haidara into the club. He will also be responsible for signing off new contracts or the pro contracts for these young uns coming through.
He employs the scouts that goes and finds these kids and the coaches who develop them.

      (Quote)

  49. Sharpy mate – I think all of those things come out of the clubs pot of money, not fattys wallet.
The only thing he has done was lend us £110M or whatever interest free.
And that was purely down to his own **** up on not doing due diligence.
By the time he sells up and fecks off he will have spent nowt overall.

      (Quote)

  50. Sharpy – that’s not praise for Ashley surely? Do you think De Jong looks better than Vuckic? I just don’t see the point in game time for him compared to say Arma or Campbell. Not to mention Hatem.

      (Quote)

  51. talking about loans – we had 2 loan players for a while who did great – then Fat |Fred wouldn’t cough up the readies to keep them. They both went on to greater things and we missed out big time.

    one was Louis Saha

The other was Sylvain Distin – one of the best ever defenders in the premier league imho – and still playing at an advanced age.

we could of had him for ten bob and a big apple if I remember correctly

The club pay for all signings and new contracts. That is a stipulation from the owner. He doesn’t want to invest his own money.

      (Quote)

  53. Boots – it’s still his club now though mate. He still has a say on how the money is spent and what the priorities of the club are. Is investment measured solely on how much money is put in?.

When he does eventually sell up the club will be in a far healthier position than when he brought it, and we will have a framework of being a self sufficient club that invests time and energy into bringing young players through – if they go on to get 1st time football like Dummett and Sammy have this season, then surely that makes us more appealing than other clubs.

      (Quote)

  54. well maybe pardew reads our blog,i just said the other day we should pull out all the stops to get luka in,sky says pardew will try and get him, talk is cheap like 😐

      (Quote)

  55. Ice – very cheap in Pardew’s case! I just can’t see it happening. I can see him scoring tonight though.

      (Quote)

  56. Tatty-Rossi is a decent player now as well, didn’t show a lot while he was with us but was very young.

      (Quote)

  57. Ice-good to see Pardew is paying attention to those of us who talk sense on here. Few and far between we might be but still… 😀

      (Quote)

  58. Georgio – Vukic can get a game on loan at Rotherham at the moment mate. I think the lad has been badly hindered with injuries, which is a shame coz I would have loved to see him and Campbell lead our line.
However I don’t see Vukic making the grade from what I’ve seen – whereas the jury is still out on De Jong for me.
I would like to see Armaz get more game time than Shola in our run in though.

      (Quote)

  59. Just to clarify I know I’m in dreamland talking about Richards and probably also Caulker but it’s nice to dream. Richards obviously is out of favour and needs a move in the summer IMO. On Caulker I was talking more of a swap deal for Taylor when they go down.

Lascelles looks a good player for forest and he will have a big future in the game.

      (Quote)

  60. Sharpy – I agree with what you are saying @64 🙄
I just don’t want anyone thinking fatty is actually dipping into his own pockets and helping us out. What he LENDS to us he will get back again.

      (Quote)

  61. Pardew is only talking about Le Cuckoo because we are playing them tonight.
He likes to try his hand at mind games before a match.
Afterwards we will hear nowt further.

      (Quote)

  62. Abeid is another youngster that I forget about but may have a big part to play next season. He is gaining valuable first team experience in Greece and apparently looks good. I’ve not seen him though anyone got any more information?
