Newcastle v Everton – Premier League match preview

Newcastle v Everton Just two days after seeing off Crystal Palace, United entertain Everton in a rescheduled Premier League encounter.

Alan Pardew completes his three game stadium ban so once again it will be John Carver in the dugout going toe-to-toe against Roberto Martinez.

Everton have been going well in the league and find themselves sitting in sixth position occupying what is the final space for European qualification this season. Ideally placed to pip Manchester United to that spot and perhaps mount a late charge for a Champions League place, Martinez’s men will be looking for another three points at St James’ Park.

For United it seems as though this is a dead rubber. With only an outside chance of qualifying for Europe it seems the biggest issue facing Newcastle is whether we finish above or below Southampton. However a win would put us within five points of Everton so perhaps there might be something to aim for after all.

Newcastle:

Loic Remy and Mathieu Debuchy are both missing once more as is Davide Santon who has been rules out despite closing in on a return. Ryan Taylor remains injured long-term.

Everton:

Steven Pienaar, Lacina Traore, Arouna Kone, Darron Gibson and Bryan Oviedo are all out of action for the Toffees although Phil Jagielka could be set for a return after being declared “medically fully fit” by Roberto Martinez.

Previously…

United lost the reverse fixture at Goodison Park 3-2 earlier on in the season and our recent record against Everton is not good. We haven’t won any of the last four matches – a run that stretches back to November 2011.

This is a fixture that very much favours the home side historically with 80 matches played on Tyneside and United winning 43 of them compared to only 18 victories for Everton.

However their superior record at Goodison Park means that overall the head-to-head is very close indeed. A total of 162 matches have been played to date with United winning 66, Everton winning 62 and 35 draws making up the rest.

Stats and facts…

This fixture has produced 17 penalties – the joint highest of any other fixture in the history of the Premier League.

United have scored four goals beyond the 90-minute mark this season – beaten only by Manchester City who have found the net six times at the death.

Leighton Baines has scored all 12 penalties he has taken in the Premier League.

Romelu Lukaku has averaged a goal a game against us.

Final thought…

The win against Palace on Saturday wasn’t pretty but it was welcome all the same. Everton will present a different problem as they need the points for different reasons and, with the greatest of respect, are better than Crystal Palace so Roberto Martinez might well instruct his team to come and have a bit more of a go at us than Tony Pulis did.

Everton are a good side and we’re at the stage of the season now where the table doesn’t lie, but they have been vulnerable on the road as of late. It’s going to come down to who performs best on the day.

Finally a note about the referee. It’s Mike Jones. Some of you probably haven’t a clue who he is but just to refresh your minds he was the guy who chalked off Cheik Tiote’s long-range strike against Manchester City not so long back so don’t expect any favours from the Chester-based official.

Howay the lads!

  1. Oblong-I am also interested in Abeid’s progress but I don’t think we have any toon eyes and ears over in Greece. He is playing well and has scored a fair few goals from midfield, but is that because he’s playing in a league where nobody can afford to turn the flood lights on for a match anymore ❓

  2. Oblong , I was reading about Mendi the other week , they love him in Greece and want him in permanently by all accounts mate.

  3. Has Pardew actually said we are interested in Lukaku?

“I think he is a player a lot of clubs will be looking at in the summer. I don’t think Everton will get a free run at him,” said Pardew.

“At the moment, it is a bit like we are with Loïc (Rémy). It is a situation that Everton would love to keep him, as we would with Loïc, and those questions are really out of Everton’s and our control.”

That’s all I’ve found on his comments, and he doesn’t actually say that we will be in for him.

Oblong – I think Abeid may get Obertans or Goslings squad spot for next season to prove himself with us. Pardew was speaking about him last week saying they were getting good reports back on him.

  4. Forget Lukaku! He costs Chelsea £17m and I think it’s fair to say he’s improved since then. What are the chances of us breaking our transfer record for a player under fatty?

  5. AOD@82, possibly, but I don’t see us being that petty tbh. Would of preferred he was ref as he may of given us a dodgy decision knowing he owed us one for Tiotes disallowed goal V Toffees last time out 😉 😀

  8. Also, that crest that’s in the article pic-is that what Everton use now? I know there were loads of complaints but is that what they’ve settled on?

    It’s ****ing terrible 😆

  11. Martinez’ first visit to SJP since his outrageous claims about McManamans tackle on Haidara. Totally ignoring the previous Guy Assulin incident when firing off at how he wasnt that type of player. Ironically cuddly Callum has been sent off since for another dangerous two footed tackle, So out of character for him 🙄

He done well at Everton mind, Taking a team already established in the top 6 and having them in the top 6. Lower in the table and Scoring less goals than this point last season but strangely getting praised more than Moyes ever did 😯

    Tis a weird sport Football

  12. CC, aye , mate but remember he is Foreign and by that simple fact MUST be better apparently. Moyes is only Scots which doesn’t count as foreign enough 😆

  13. It does seem that way which makes the bottom of the table so much funnier; People still havent twigged that Wenger, Mourinho, Pellegrini only work so well as they inheritted great sides.

Other foreign managers like Mel, Mulensteen, Magath, inherit **** players and their results are awful regardless of fruity accents and apparantly new funky ideas

95% of this sport is dependant on players

  14. Just can’t believe West Brom have only 5 wins this season so far! Yet they aren’t in the bottom 3. Fulham’s goal difference of -40 is mind boggling as well. Of course it doesn’t take much to boggle my mind. 😆

  15. Mike will really peg out this summer. The club do need a new teapot and Mike will lash out for it. Have no fear. If a striker is available for about the same price he might go for that as well.

  16. Now that we’ve had a season in the top 10 (at least it looks that way) I would think next season will be in the bottom 10 so that we can average out to being a mid table club. That makes a lot of sense to Mike SmallBerries. And it means he can spend as little as possible while raking in the TV money. Lovely.

  17. Quite looking forward to tonights game actually , makes a pleasant change to have a mid week fixture. 😀 trouble is it will be the perfect Pards excuse if we **** up v Saints on saturday 🙄

  18. I’m just not sure I can handle the excitement of another mid table finish next season. And what idiot will Ashley hire next as MD or DoF? There’s a lot of excitement to be had in thinking about that as well. I hear Mike has a brother he keeps locked up in the castle who might get the position.

  19. Does anybody remember Ruprecht from Dirty Rotten Scoundrels? Well Mike’s brother is a little less intelligent than that.

  20. Is it true what I’m hearing? You know, the story out now that Joe and Dekka have opened a nudist colony in Mallorca?

      (Quote)

  21. Surely we need more Ashley presence at the club Kimtoon? The brother would be just right for us. We only hire top people you know.

      (Quote)

  22. G2, don’t encourage me to get a mischievous mate, it wouldn’t take much to set me off. 😉 😆

      (Quote)

  23. Joe and Dekka’s new club is called The Wee Winkies. And the waiting list to join is just as tiny!

  24. If only we would go serpentine more often. This is a perfect opportunity. Everton don’t play well against serpentine runs into the box. A bit of jinky this and slippery that and we’ll bulge the old onion bag!
